What is the Fortune 500?

With the launch of this year's Fortune 500 list, we asked New Yorkers what they think the Fortune 500 is and why it matters.

00:00Fortune 500 I think of like money banking like a lot of wealth. What is a fortune

00:04500 and why is it important? Those are the best companies the ones that makes

00:08the most money. I would guess it's the the 500 most valuable companies in the

00:13world. It's very important there's a lot of people who invest in these companies

00:16and you could make it or or lose a lot of money. I think it's the top 500

00:21companies I think on the stock market. Why is it important? Because we know who's

00:24taking our money. I think it's definitely important because we get to know what

00:27companies are at the highest. They create jobs for the economy and they give

00:31people opportunities that they maybe could not have. Oh I think the Fortune 500

00:35has been important for a long time. I've been a longtime reader of your magazine

00:39but you know between the global 500 and America's Fortune 500 it's important to

00:45know what companies are getting the majority of the revenues for this

00:48country at the same time so our GDP is based on all for that so it becomes very

00:52important.
