00:30Welcome to the City of London. We're in one of the most interesting and one of the most ancient parts of the whole of London.
00:42Very close to Barbican. And if you're standing by the underground station of Barbican, you'll notice these incredible towers rising above us.
01:00Watch this part of the program and answer the question. Where did Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother write their names inside the building?
01:18Right now we're standing in a street called Cloth Fair. And this is a medieval street.
01:33And if you look to your left, you can actually see the oldest surviving townhouse in the whole of London.
01:40And it dates back to around the year 1600. It's the only townhouse to survive the Great Fire of London in 1666.
02:02And because it's such an old building, it's a very, very expensive building and it's still used as a private residence to this day.
02:08Inside, we've had some very famous visitors. Winston Churchill has been inside this building, as has the Queen Mother.
02:15And they've actually inscribed their names in the windows inside the building.
02:19We do have some great old pubs around here as well, as you've seen.
02:36And an amazing old church, one of the most important medieval churches in the whole of London.
02:42And that's St Bartholomew the Great.
02:45We're now going to go into the churchyard and I'm going to tell you more about this amazing church.
02:49Where did Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother write their names inside the building?
02:58They wrote their names in a window.
03:10Watch the second part of the program and answer the question.
03:14What happened to Raheer on his way to Rome?
03:17Now this is St Bartholomew the Great Church.
03:38This is one of the most important and also one of the most historical churches in the whole of London.
03:43Named after a Christian martyr.
03:59Now the man who founded St Bartholomew was a man called Raheer.
04:03He went on a pilgrimage to Rome and on the way he fell ill.
04:07He prayed to St Bartholomew and St Bartholomew came to him in a vision.
04:11He said, please, I would like you to found a church and a hospital here in this part of London.
04:19And if you look at his statue here, you can actually see he's holding an image of the priory in his hands.
04:26Inside this church, it is so atmospheric that they've even decided to film quite a few movies inside here.
04:52If you've ever seen Shakespeare in Love, some of that was filmed inside here, as was four weddings and a funeral.
04:59And most recently, the Muppets were actually inside St Bartholomew the Great Church.
05:04What happened to Raheer on his way to Rome?
05:23He fell ill.
05:25Watch the next part of the program and answer the question.
05:37How old was Mary Mitchell when she died?
05:39So here we are standing in the graveyard of St Bartholomew the Great.
05:59And you can see this grave here that dates back over 200 years.
06:02Let me see it says, in memory of Mrs. Mary Mitchell, wife of Samuel Mitchell, of this parish who departed this life in 1806.
06:13Now, she was 35 years old.
06:15Her grave is actually standing on top of many other bodies because this graveyard is raised about six feet above the ground because there are victims of the plague who are buried here.
06:35The plague of 1665 and hundreds of victims were buried in some of the cemeteries all around the city of London.
06:45How old was Mary Mitchell when she died?
07:03She was 35 years old.
07:08We are standing here in what was once the South Isle of the Church.
07:13Here we can see this wonderful Tudor Gatehouse.
07:16It dates back about 400 years.
07:19And that was once the entrance into the medieval church here.
07:24Amazing that people actually still live in this building here as well.
07:27So next time you're actually in this part of London and you're very close to Barbican Underground Station,
07:46just look around the corner and you can find this wonderful church and wonderful alleyways nearby.
07:52But now I'm going to head off into Smithfield.
07:54So see you next time.
