A shocking case of anti-India hate that has come to light from Australia.
00:05
A 42-year-old man of Indian origin in Adelaide suffered critical brain injuries
00:10
and is in coma after police allegedly knelt on his neck during an attempted arrest.
00:18
The video of the incident that shows the victim, whose name is Gaurav Kundi,
00:23
he was being forced onto a road in Adelaide's eastern suburbs
00:26
while he and the policeman knelt on his neck,
00:31
even as his partner Amritpal Kaur loudly protested his innocence.
00:36
The wife has recounted the details of the alleged arrest
00:38
and she said that the police assaulted him
00:41
and even banged his head against the police vehicle during the arrest.
00:46
She further claimed that her plea to take him to the hospital was ignored
00:50
and that Kundu was now in coma after sustaining severe brain damage.
00:55
The Australian authorities, however, have claimed that Kundi
00:58
allegedly violently resisted arrest when the police intervened
01:03
after witnessing an altercation between him and his partner
01:07
and they've initiated a commissioner-level inquiry into the incident.
01:11
But that's not what the wife has claimed.
01:13
The wife has claimed that she kept pleading to the cops
01:16
to take him for medical help but all her pleas were ignored.
01:25
My brief has been that he is in a very serious condition.
01:31
Obviously, we hope the best for the individual
01:33
but we need to be prepared for the situation.
01:37
It might result in being passed away.
01:41
In the event that we have an incident like this
01:44
where a person goes by as a result of interaction with police
01:47
it's to classify as a death in custody
01:49
and all deaths in custody require a commissioner's inquiry.
01:54
Given the significant injuries this man has suffered already
01:58
and the potential for an adverse outcome
02:01
I've made the decision to conduct a commissioner's inquiry now rather than now.
02:06
And while this incident is a scathing reminder
02:10
of what had happened with George Floyd in the United States
02:14
it is shameful because this is not the first time
02:17
that an incident like this has been reported in Australia.
02:20
There have been several anti-India hate incidents
02:23
that have come to light.
02:24
You would remember in November 2023 in Sydney
02:27
when an Indian origin student was assaulted
02:29
he suffered brain hemorrhage after what had happened
02:32
in July 2023 in Sydney again
02:35
when a 23-year-old Indian student
02:37
who was beaten with rods
02:39
four or five assailants had attacked
02:41
while he was en route to work.
02:43
In October 2023 itself
02:45
a man by the name of Shubham Garg
02:47
he was 28 years of age
02:49
he was stabbed multiple times
02:51
in the face, in his chest, in his abdomen
02:54
during a robbery.
02:57
And why is it
02:59
that we've seen such kind of racist attacks
03:01
anti-India hate attacks
03:03
that have happened in Australia time
03:06
and again
03:06
I want to bring in Jitar Jai Bhardwaj
03:09
he's the founder and editor-in-chief
03:11
of The Australia Today
03:12
he joins us on the broadcast
03:13
Jitar thank you
03:14
for speaking to us
03:16
it is just shameful to what has happened
03:18
with God of Kundi
03:18
and just to imagine
03:20
what the wife must have gone through
03:21
at that time
03:22
because she kept pleading to the cops
03:23
that it was their internal matter
03:25
and he was not being violent
03:27
in any which way
03:28
but the cops just charged on him
03:30
and even now
03:30
they continue to defend themselves
03:32
they say that
03:33
he resisted their force
03:34
and that is why
03:35
they had to resort to an action like this
03:37
see I can tell you
03:41
that it's a very unfortunate incident
03:44
yes
03:45
the way police officers have handled it
03:49
it should have been handled better way
03:51
but definitely
03:52
I would like to say
03:54
that it doesn't seem to be a racist
03:56
motivated incident
03:59
by the South of Syria police
04:02
see the police was there on patrol
04:06
we have to understand the sequences here
04:09
police was there
04:10
the police car was patrolling the streets of Adelaide City
04:14
and they found a man and a woman on the street
04:18
and the man shoving and pushing the women
04:21
so they intervened and tried to talk to this gentleman
04:25
without any aspirations
04:28
that he was an Indian or Australian or something
04:31
they tried to help the women
04:33
domestic violence is an issue in Australia
04:36
we lose almost one woman
04:40
every week in Australia
04:42
for two domestic violence incidents
04:45
so the police in right manner intervened
04:49
however after that what happened
04:51
cannot be justified in any which way
04:54
so when they arrested him
04:57
this gentleman
04:58
as per the wife's statement
05:01
which she has told us
05:03
that he was drunk
05:05
and he had some precondition
05:07
could be any mental health issues
05:09
or other issues
05:11
which he was having
05:12
so he registered his arrest
05:14
tried to explain that
05:16
this is my matter
05:17
or whatever he did
05:18
and as we see in the footage
05:21
his head was banged into the van
05:25
police van
05:26
and then he was put down on the floor
05:28
the way he was
05:30
which in my opinion
05:32
was excessive
05:34
a police should have taken care of
05:36
and the way the knee was put on his neck
05:39
that was ultimately not acceptable
05:41
at least in salient police manuals
05:46
but I have two points here
05:48
I have two points here
05:49
firstly in this particular case
05:51
the wife kept on urging to the cops
05:53
that she was not in trouble
05:55
even when they tried to separate him from her
05:58
she kept on saying
05:59
that they should not
06:00
come on so harshly on him
06:02
after that
06:04
when he pressed his knee
06:06
against his neck
06:07
against Gaurav's neck
06:08
the wife kept saying
06:09
please take him to the hospital
06:10
but that was ignored
06:12
and secondly
06:14
there have been incidents
06:15
where Indians have been targeted
06:17
in Australia
06:18
even when the George Floyd case
06:20
had happened
06:21
the world has seen
06:22
the kind of movement
06:23
that had taken place
06:24
and how there were so many questions
06:26
about the police
06:27
using excessive force
06:29
especially when it comes to
06:31
an individual
06:33
from another nationality
06:35
how was the police
06:37
not exercising restraint?
06:40
okay
06:41
let me answer both the questions
06:44
let's take the first one first
06:45
yes
06:47
there is
06:48
a kind of understanding
06:51
that men
06:53
the violence of men
06:55
against women
06:56
is an issue
06:57
and they coerce females
06:59
their partners
07:00
in most of the cases
07:02
so that
07:03
even though
07:04
the females
07:05
women
07:06
have been beaten
07:07
in domestic violence
07:08
situation
07:08
they kind of
07:10
favor the partners
07:12
when police arrive
07:13
and say
07:14
nothing has happened
07:15
he's alright
07:16
please leave him alone
07:17
and that's how
07:19
I see this case
07:20
also
07:21
when the women
07:22
was pleading to the police
07:24
that leave him alone
07:25
is none of his fault
07:26
that's how
07:27
if I can give you
07:29
some perspective
07:30
that's how police
07:31
would have seen it
07:32
now
07:32
come to the second point
07:34
the premier of the
07:37
South Australia
07:37
came in
07:38
support of police department
07:40
the commissioner
07:42
two days back
07:43
on Saturday
07:43
said that
07:44
he has full faith
07:45
in his police force
07:47
officers
07:47
and all that stuff
07:48
however
07:49
let's fast forward
07:51
it to
07:52
Monday
07:53
when the new footage
07:54
came into light
07:55
then the same
07:57
police commissioner
07:58
has initiated
07:59
an inquiry
08:00
internal inquiry
08:01
that what has
08:02
happened
08:03
and he told the media
08:04
that
08:05
the earlier version
08:07
of his understanding
08:08
was based on
08:09
the body cam
08:10
cameras
08:10
which he has seen
08:12
and nothing
08:12
untowards
08:13
was seen
08:14
in those cameras
08:15
however
08:16
when we see
08:17
a bird's eye view
08:18
from the outside
08:19
camera
08:20
which was shot
08:21
by the lady
08:21
then we can
08:23
simply see
08:24
that police action
08:25
was aggressive
08:25
inquiry will be held
08:28
and I can tell you
08:29
Indian Australian
08:30
community
08:31
in South Australia
08:32
is really really
08:33
angry about it
08:34
and they are
08:35
planning a protest
08:36
there
08:36
I have talked
08:38
to a number
08:38
of community leaders
08:41
they have told
08:41
that they have
08:42
made a group
08:43
to kind of
08:44
help this lady
08:46
and take
08:47
this matter
08:48
further on
08:49
so that
08:49
this kind of
08:50
incident
08:50
doesn't happen
08:51
the second question
08:54
which you asked
08:54
me was
08:55
a number
08:56
of previous
08:57
incidences
08:57
which have
08:58
happened in
08:58
Celia
08:59
I can tell you
09:01
all of them
09:02
have been covered
09:03
by the Celia
09:04
today
09:04
however
09:06
except for
09:08
two of them
09:09
no other case
09:10
was racially
09:11
motivated
09:12
they were
09:13
Turks
09:14
who had
09:15
these people
09:16
were at the
09:16
wrong time
09:17
at the wrong
09:17
place
09:18
and they were
09:18
a victim
09:19
of crime
09:20
on the street
09:21
however
09:22
I will not say
09:24
that racially
09:25
motivated
09:25
actions
09:26
doesn't happen
09:27
in the Celia
09:27
they do happen
09:28
there are
09:30
systems
09:30
here
09:31
and
09:32
action
09:33
hard
09:34
really
09:35
difficult
09:36
stupid
09:37
people
09:37
are there
09:38
we have to
09:39
save ourselves
09:40
from them
09:41
but the
09:42
action is taken
09:43
police
09:43
and authorities
09:44
do act
09:45
against them
09:46
it's not that
09:47
if
09:47
Indian Australians
09:49
are left
09:49
high and dry
09:50
that is not the
09:51
case
09:51
I can assure you
09:52
but in this case
09:54
we all were
09:55
very surprised
09:56
that
09:56
premier came
09:57
in support
09:57
of the police
09:58
officer
09:58
probably has to
09:59
bite his own
10:00
words now
10:01
after seeing
10:02
this footage
10:03
which has come up
10:03
but this is
10:04
exactly my point
10:05
even if this
10:06
particular incident
10:07
wasn't racially
10:08
motivated
10:09
how can excessive
10:10
force by the
10:11
cops possibly
10:12
be justified
10:12
in this particular
10:14
case his wife
10:15
is speaking
10:15
for the husband
10:16
so it's not
10:17
like she was
10:18
at the receiving
10:19
end
10:19
and also
10:21
given the fact
10:22
that action
10:23
needs to be
10:24
taken against
10:24
the cops
10:25
because I read
10:25
some reports
10:26
that also say
10:27
that the man's
10:29
life is in
10:29
danger
10:30
some doctors
10:31
have also said
10:32
that there is a
10:32
possibility
10:33
that his brain
10:34
injuries
10:34
he may not
10:35
recover
10:36
he has two
10:36
children
10:37
he may not
10:38
get normal
10:38
he is in
10:41
critical condition
10:41
that's what we
10:42
have been told
10:43
and yes
10:45
the situation
10:46
is not very
10:47
good for this
10:48
family
10:48
and they are
10:49
going through
10:50
a lot
10:50
that's what
10:52
we understand
10:52
right now
10:53
and as far
10:55
as the action
10:56
is concerned
10:56
and I can
10:58
assure you
10:58
there have
11:01
been a number
11:02
of cases
11:02
where police
11:03
excessive force
11:04
has been
11:05
used
11:05
and
11:06
strict action
11:08
has been
11:08
taken
11:08
in one of
11:09
the cases
11:09
police officer
11:10
has gone to
11:11
jail
11:11
so if the
11:13
inquiry
11:13
finds out
11:14
that police
11:16
access
11:16
force was
11:18
not justified
11:19
then I can
11:21
assure you
11:21
there will
11:22
be a really
11:24
really hard
11:24
action on
11:25
him
11:25
but right
11:26
now
11:26
on community
11:27
Indian
11:28
Australian
11:28
communities
11:29
behalf
11:29
they are
11:30
reeling
11:30
they are
11:31
angry
11:31
they are
11:32
upset
11:32
and they
11:33
want support
11:34
for this
11:34
family
11:34
that's what
11:35
they are
11:36
trying to
11:37
right now
11:40
it's 10 o'clock
11:40
in the night
11:41
I can tell you
11:42
just half an
11:43
hour back
11:43
also
11:43
there were
11:44
a number
11:45
of people
11:45
who have
11:46
gathered
11:46
close to
11:47
where the
11:48
incident has
11:49
happened
11:49
and they are
11:50
working out
11:51
strategies
11:52
to find out
11:53
some sort
11:54
of solution
11:56
if we can
11:56
call it
11:57
all right
11:58
Jitarth I want to
11:58
thank you for
11:59
speaking to us
12:00
of course we are
12:00
hoping for
12:01
stronger action
12:02
from the
12:03
Australian
12:03
authorities
12:04
from the
12:04
Australian
12:05
police
12:05
and not
12:06
mere words
12:07
because this
12:08
aggression by
12:09
the cops
12:09
against what
12:10
has happened
12:11
to Gaurab
12:11
Kundi
12:11
cannot
12:12
be justified
12:13
I want to
12:13
thank you
12:13
one
12:13
second
