00:00new satellite images into out front showing the extent of the damage caused by a massive
00:06Ukrainian operation that took a year and a half to plan against air bases deep inside Russia
00:11one Russian military blogger calling it Russia's Pearl Harbor and the Ukrainian government says
00:17that the drone attacks damaged more than a third of Russia's strategic bombers the operation caused
00:21more than seven billion dollars and it did hit air bases across Russia and one attack happened
00:262,800 miles from Ukraine's border so let's just put that up on a map just to make this very clear
00:31that is closer to Japan than it is to Kiev so you're talking about Tokyo not Kiev just to think
00:37about what it would take to pull that off well what did it take the Ukrainian president Zelensky
00:41says 117 drones were used and that these drones were covertly smuggled into Russia inside mobile
00:49homes that were transported on trucks and then placed near the air bases the Trump administration
00:55official tells CNN and this is really crucial the United States was not given a heads up about the
01:00operation that is stunning in and of itself and as for Putin it's a major embarrassment to say the
01:06very least and as Russian media analyst Julia Davis points out there is utter disbelief and also shame
01:12what's happening tonight on Russian state television how did these trucks get through who has inspected
01:20them how did you pass the inspection points the weigh-ins how did it happen a level of frustration and
01:31anger there expressed by by now extremely familiar faces on Russian state television Putin propaganda
01:38supporters out front now Vladimir Milov a former deputy minister of energy in Russia served under
01:44Vladimir Putin obviously then of course you resigned Vladimir so let me just ask you from the
01:50perspective of you know when you hear that on Russian state how did those trucks get in how did they get
01:55through the waypoints have right that frustration you hear there how big of an embarrassment is this
02:01for Putin good evening Erin great to be with you again it is big indeed enough but this is not the
02:09first time because we just had a nine-month occupation of the part of the Kursk region by Ukrainian troops
02:17nearly ended and that was a major setback to Putin and you know Russian airports Moscow area airports
02:25getting disrupted if not daily at least weekly because of permanent Ukrainian attacks of Russian
02:33military industry facilities with drones today I heard on the air that one of the executives of
02:39the Emirates Airlines said that they might be reconsidering the whole schedule of flights to Moscow because of
02:46this permanent disruptions so so these setbacks now come like nearly daily I mean and this is just
02:54another example of total failure failure of counterintelligence failure to protect strategic
03:01long-range aircraft and so on well what I hear from Moscow is that people are barely surprised by all
03:08these multiple failures it shows that Putin system is not as strong as it wants to seem from the outset
03:14which is very important because obviously on state television you know I think the right word to
03:22describe the sentiment is fury right there is fury they are angry there's one former KGB agent who was
03:28on saying that because of this Ukraine essentially should be obliterated take a listen it can be compensated
03:39only with them being preventively knocked out down to nothing there is no other way so what do you think
03:49Putin does here well fury is the right word but what I don't hear in all these comments is surprise
03:58people are really not surprised because everybody is more or less aware that Putin's system is in a lot
04:04of ways dysfunctional clearly Putin would retaliate again with this barbaric bombardments of Ukrainian
04:11peaceful cities as we saw in the past years months and weeks there is no other way to go because Russia does
04:19not have the capacity to like say launch a massive military offensive they don't have enough
04:25personnel for it so he'll probably resort to barbaric bombardments yet again I mean there are other options
04:32like people talk about potential use of nuclear weapons and so on I don't think that this is on the table but
04:40again Putin had shown many times that he's resorting to barbarity and revenge after Ukrainians really do
04:48something sensitive to his military so now to the what the Russian military blogger said when he called
04:54it Russia's Pearl Harbor now obviously Pearl Harbor was you know an unprovoked attack on the United States
05:00this is this is obviously Ukraine trying to take out the bombers that are bombing Ukraine on a regular basis so in
05:07that sense it's different but we're talking about the scale of what happened when he refers to Pearl
05:12Harbor presumably you know and and and Zelensky says that operatives planned this that the planning
05:18happened directly next to an office of Russia's intelligence services right so they did it right
05:23next door and nobody picked up on it they worked on it for over a year so to the point you made about
05:28you know Russia Putin's status inside Russia you know does this weaken him domestically not immediately
05:39but you know step by step brick by brick because again when you have so many failures on all fronts
05:46begin with economy or so much promised import substitution we will soon have no plane planes to fly on because
05:54the boeings and air buses are getting worn out and there is no maintenance because of the sanctions
06:01and so on so all of these things will come together at one point probably there will be no immediate
06:07consequences after setbacks like this but then again you see the reaction people are asking questions
06:13how come how this is all possible we thought that we're like this mighty superpower which at the end of
06:19they have all their strategic bombers unprotected is is that the superpower we imagined so so the sooner
06:26or later I remember you know my childhood years in the 80s when all these questions about the
06:32inefficiency of the Soviet government came together at one point and uh this became louder and louder in
06:38the end yeah for glasnost Vladimir Milov thank you very much I appreciate your time as always it is
06:44good to see you I know it's late where you are I want to go now to retired Lieutenant General
06:49Ben Hodges he was the commanding general for the U.S. Army in Europe also late where you are tonight
06:54General so how significant do you think these strikes uh by Ukraine uh are right right now against Putin
07:02well of course the most uh significant thing immediately is a reduction in Russia's ability
07:10to kill innocent Ukrainian citizens uh these bombers were how Russia was launching cruise missiles against
07:17Ukrainian cities so immediate reduction in that capability but then I like how Vladimir just
07:23described you know the psychological impact on Russia as people begin to realize that they are not
07:30invulnerable and this will put pressure on the the Putin regime so what does it say to you and I
07:37mentioned this uh right before I brought Vladimir into the conversation Ukraine did not tell the United
07:42States about these strikes which is hugely significant and I I can't say exactly did the
07:48U.S. never have any inkling I mean the planning's been going on for over a year right so that would
07:51predate Trump even winning the election so I don't know if the U.S. knew nothing ever about anything even
07:57being thought about but certainly we know they didn't know about these strikes at this time what does
08:02that say to you well it it tells me that of course Ukrainians do not trust the uh the Trump administration
08:10um I mean the uh they're pretty certain based on what they've seen happening and coming from the
08:16Trump administration that if they had shared or given the heads up that this would have been leaked or
08:21handed over somehow uh if not stopped uh and so I think they don't have any trust there and then also even
08:29if they did trust the White House uh they would have been concerned about this being discussed
08:35over some signal chat group uh you know inside the administration and and so this is why this trust
08:41about who runs our intelligence why this trust is uh is so important so obviously you're joining
08:48from Germany tonight and and and you were the commanding general for the U.S. Army in Europe so I know
08:52that it you know what it means when the German defense chief goes on television as he did today
08:58with the BBC and talked about the possibility of Putin attacking a member of NATO perhaps soon here's
09:05what he said I think it's a it's a very serious threat if you ask me now is this a guarantee that's
09:13not earlier than 2029 would say no it's not so we must be able to fight tonight must be able to fight
09:22tonight and that an attack of Putin on NATO could come in the next few years do you think that's realistic
09:30well of course what General Breuer is is trying to do is help change the culture inside Germany and the
09:38German Bundeswehr about what we in the U.S. military call readiness of preparation to be ready to fight
09:45tonight having your train your equipment works all of that and General Breuer is leading that effort but
09:52he also is repeating what the British defense minister has said and other European leaders
09:58talking about almost the inevitability that Russia plans to attack a NATO country not in the way that
10:05they've attacked Ukraine but certainly they're going to test NATO especially if they think that the U.S. is
10:11not going to be a reliable ally can the alliance respond to an attack of some sort because Russia's
10:18objective has always been to put a wedge between Europe and the United States and to break apart
10:23the alliance General Hodges thank you so much I appreciate your time tonight
