00:00always good to have smiley kaufman back with us of course you can check out the smiley show
00:04right here on sports grid multiple times per week as we are now in the stretch run baby
00:09u.s open next week we've got to get through the canadian open this week we have a lot happening
00:16smiley it is great to see you as always my man and i i gotta start here because i'm having some
00:22fun with this today i always love this day it is the longest day in golf and uh if you're just
00:27tuning in and haven't heard me and scotty talking about it 12 u.s open qualifiers the last chance
00:33to get into the u.s open next week you've got pga tour players live players dentists garage door
00:41installers like everything all over the world and this is what makes it so great smiley is
00:45everyone's got a shot to get into the u.s open have you ever done the grid the longest day in
00:52golf before have you been part of this before you know what mike uh first off good to be with
00:57you and yes i have i actually uh first time i did it was right out of college and was successful
01:03i i'd shot 67 in the morning and there was they were taking three spots in georgia and i uh could
01:11not have been more nervous on the back nine of that that last 18 holes i think i probably shot three or
01:17four over um i ended up shooting like 76 but made it through by one shot it was playing ridiculously hard
01:23we were playing a course called setting down in atlanta uh but it qualified for my first u.s open
01:28and pioneers this is all the way back in 2014 but uh i think it's pretty cool though mike you know when
01:34you think about the u.s open you think about a grueling test you think about not only all the shots you
01:39have to hit physically but the mental tests and there's no better way to finish a field out than
01:46making guys play 36 holes like even max homer is playing today who i think most people would
01:53think that he would be inside the top 60 would be uh already qualified but he isn't and guess what
01:58he's carrying his own golf bag today i mean you gotta love that i i love it i saw that uh shot of max i
02:06haven't looked at his site recently i don't know where he's at right now he's close he's close right
02:11now i got it over here he was uh one of the last guys in last time i looked i i uh as i tell you all
02:18the time max is a guy that i like rooting for i like betting on max i like rooting for max so i'm
02:23hoping that he could be and he's a good tough golf course player as well which i would like to see max
02:28in there next week but you've got things smiley like a high school junior in georgia who's destroying
02:34the field right now there's a dentist in washington who's in the lead uh a former pga
02:42player who's a garage door installer yeah he played it uh he played at lsu with me he was a senior when
02:49i was a freshman so he's one of the best ball strikers i've ever seen so not i don't this guy
02:55could be working for 10 years and he's he could still show up uh in any course in the country and
03:00just get a case of the stripes and hit it right where he's looking so not surprised to see that
03:04he's playing well today last thing on this how annoyed do some of the the pros get let's just say
03:11like you've got guys out there today and i'm not going to single guys out you know cameron young other
03:15guys who aren't going to get through today and they see dentists and high school juniors getting
03:22through does it fire them up more does it really piss them off like what if you're a pro and you see
03:27this stuff going on what do you think oh it's part of the u.s open and i think graham de let
03:32uh when i made it to l or excuse me when i made to the u.s open for the first time i'm playing a
03:37practice round with him he he pulled me aside and basically said you earned your way here to this
03:42event and he was a professional player at the time on the pga tour and that meant a lot to me a player
03:47who had no status at the time just coming out of college and it really kind of settled me in and
03:52thought you know what i did earn my way here and there's plenty of other players that didn't i should
03:57be proud uh to be here and and just play my play my tail off and then you and then the gun goes off
04:04and then you start the u.s open and then you realize holy crap this tournament's hard i see what all
04:10the hype is about that's awesome uh it really is uh let's get back to now uh the pga tour so once
04:18again scotty scheffler i guess you could say smiley is on a heater uh i guess uh we could say
04:24over the last five six weeks what's he won three of his last uh four starts or four of his last five
04:30starts it's hard to keep up once he starts racking them up at this rate but to win back-to-back years
04:36at jack's tournament the memorial uh and once again doing it in the fashion that he did uh i'll ben
04:42griffin played really well uh and had a chance to win the tournament too obviously but scotty
04:47locked in again smiley yeah it's back to regular regular scheduling uh for programming for scotty
04:53scheffler he's somehow even statistically uh hitting some marks that he's higher this year than he was
05:01last year which is kind of scary with the rest of the season as it plays out uh he very well could
05:07win the next two major championships he could win the u.s open he very well could win the open
05:11um and have a chance for his own scotty slam heading to augusta next year that's how good
05:15a golf he's playing it's not that far-fetched um getting to watch him firsthand this past week
05:20at memorial following his group for a couple days uh you just wouldn't believe it mike um i've never
05:25seen someone just have this much control of their golf ball and be so elite at every single part of
05:33his game um and it's not just the physical stuff too it's the mental side of the game that's so
05:39impressive he's able to just dissect every single shot as its own and on a golf course that i talked
05:47to so many players last week mike that just said this place stresses me out every single shot i feel
05:54like it's so hard to get committed especially when you have small greens firm greens a lot of rough
05:59and wind and here's scotty just like yeah i'm just gonna feather a little seven iron in uh no problem
06:06uh to a small green on sunday to 15 feet the exact shot he's supposed to hit um it's it's phenomenal
06:13and some people think it's boring to watch i think it's fascinating to watch how easy he makes the game
06:19look he really does uh make it look easy and i just wanted to go look i mean he's plus 260 for oakmont
06:27next week like no he's not oh my 60 this is a this is a major championship that is gonna be and like
06:36you just said these guys i heard a lot of guys talking and you were there obviously trying to
06:40prepare themselves that was a good test for what oakmont's gonna be like in terms of the size of
06:45the rough and the different things like i mean come on smile you're just gonna show up at oakmont
06:49next week and smash everybody there too not gonna be that easy at oakmont for him is it
06:53well um i think the only thing that could hold him back is driving accuracy if he has
07:01well he's like he's honestly he's a 65 to 66 percent um accuracy from a driver uh of the golf
07:12ball standpoint the leaders on tour are right around like 70 percent uh as far as their ability
07:17hit the fairways we're talking about a player who's long and hits 65 percent of his fairways
07:22that's what sets up his entire game um maybe not quite as much as like a rory who really really
07:28hits it far but because he is so ridiculously good at hitting his number that's gonna bode so well for
07:36him at oakmont i play the u.s open there the last one in 16 um and it's really a golf course mike that
07:42that requires you first off to find fairways because these bunkers everything rolls to the lips and you
07:48basically have to punch everything out um and then greens that are rolling in the high 14 so these
07:53greens have so much slope and players that can somehow manage you know the flight and spin into
07:59these greens so where they can have uphill putts uh you'll be able to make some birdies but
08:03the guys that keep the doubles off the card are most likely to be the ones that are in the hunt
08:08and scotty scheffler is the best at keeping the bogeys off the card i only got 30 seconds smiley who do you
08:14like in canada this week before we get there rory's there ludwig's there a couple other guys
08:18gosh um i remember thinking i i'm not sure if ricky's playing he if uh probably always depends on if he
08:27makes the u.s open he's a guy that i think he's about to start playing some good golf but uh sam burns
08:32is kind of and robert mcintyre two guys and mcintyre
08:36you
08:36you
