00:00Hello, welcome to London TV with me, Lesley Collier.
00:04Today we're down at the British Museum for an exhibition entitled
00:07The First Emperor, China's Terracotta Army,
00:10which was discovered quite by chance in 1974 by a group of villagers.
00:15Now when we think of the Terracotta Army,
00:17we tend to think of the statues all lined up en masse.
00:20However, this exhibition allows us to see the details
00:23and the intricacies of the individual warriors of the afterlife.
00:30The Terracotta Army is consisting of about 7,000 life-size figures of warriors
00:40and about 800 forces.
00:42They're thought to be guarding two of the First Emperor of China.
00:46We've divided the exhibition into two halves.
00:48In the first half, we tell the story of the First Emperor,
00:53where he came from, a little about his background, his rise to power,
00:59his unification of China.
01:01And then in the second half, we move on to talk about his tomb complex
01:06and, of course, the Terracotta Army.
01:10They're just as works of art.
01:11They're very, very special.
01:12But to be able to have the background behind them
01:15and to understand the story of why they were made,
01:17how they were made,
01:19that is the aim of this exhibition.
01:21They've been excavating around the tomb complex
01:28and they've found many other equally stunning discoveries,
01:32life-size bronze birds and Terracotta musicians playing to them as well.
01:37And we have examples of all of this in the exhibition.
01:40The First Emperor, China's Terracotta Army,
01:46is on now at the British Museum until April 2008.
