One day, a synagogue leader named Jairus came to Jesus and fell at His feet. He was desperate. His 12-year-old daughter was very sick, about to die.
He begged Jesus, “Please come and lay Your hands on her so she will be healed and live.”
Jesus agreed and went with Jairus. But as they were on the way, people came and told Jairus, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the Teacher anymore.”
Jesus heard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.”
When they reached the house, people were crying loudly. Jesus said, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.”
They laughed at Him because they knew she was dead. But Jesus took only Peter, James, John, and the girl’s parents into the room.
He took the girl by the hand and said, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”
Immediately, the girl got up and walked around! She was alive!
Everyone was completely amazed. Jesus told them to give her something to eat and not to tell anyone what had happened.
