00:00You've heard of a rags-to-riches story, but how about a riches-to-rags one?
00:04Like and subscribe to hear my reverse Cinderella story.
00:07Hi, MSA Nation. My name is Patricia.
00:09But since we're friends, you can call me Trisha.
00:11But not Patty. I hate Patty.
00:14Growing up, I was extremely rich. Like, next-level rich.
00:18Like Oprah meets Rihanna meets King Charles rich.
00:21It was all thanks to my mom, who the world knew as Cheryl.
00:25She was the most impressive person I knew.
00:27She and her best friend, whose name I won't mention for reasons that will soon become queer,
00:32were business tycoons who got a ton of investors and created a huge mega-corporation right out of college.
00:38Ever heard of Amazon? Their business was kind of like that.
00:41Let's call it BFF Enterprises.
00:43It employed thousands of people all across the country.
00:46And Mom and her friend reaped the rewards of their extraordinary efforts.
00:50I aspired to have a BFF like Mom's as a VIP daughter of a VIP.
00:55I was enrolled in etiquette classes immediately.
00:58By the time I was five, I was practically Julie Andrews.
01:01You know, the queen from the Princess Diaries.
01:03Only, smaller.
01:04I was treated like a princess, with people attending my every need.
01:08When I showed an interest in art, I was gifted all of the finest art supplies.
01:12And was even able to practice by creating portraits of some of the coolest celebrities.
01:16I can neither confirm nor deny that those were the celebrities who I painted.
01:20Yeah, my life was pretty much perfect.
01:23Until someone ruined everything.
01:25One day, there was a huge commotion next door at Mom's best friend's house.
01:29All of the sudden, the door swung open and I was shocked to see Mom's bestie in handcuffs.
01:35It turned out, she who must not be named, that's what I called her, had been stealing a ton of money from their company.
01:42Because of that, their business went under and thousands of people lost their jobs.
01:46To make matters worse, an angry former employee was convinced that Mom must be to blame too.
01:51He put together a whole manifesto and brought Mom to court.
01:54Fortunately, Mom was declared innocent.
01:57I knew she always would be, of course.
01:59She who must not be named was proven guilty.
02:02And sent to jail.
02:03The employee who had lodged a case against Mom ended up behind bars for defamation too.
02:08Mom's name was cleared and she and I lived happily ever after.
02:11That's the end of my story. Thanks for tuning in.
02:14Just kidding. It got a whole lot worse from there.
02:16Even though she was innocent, the public knew Mom as the face of the company.
02:20And they were mad.
02:21Mom and I weren't exactly well equipped to fight off an angry mob.
02:25So the government intervened for our safety.
02:27And we were forced to join the witness protection program.
02:30And completely change our identities.
02:32We were given cover stories and everything.
02:34So, remember before when I said my name was Patricia?
02:37Well, that was sort of the half-truth.
02:40I had a different name before all of this mess.
02:42A gorgeous name.
02:43But that and everything else were taken from me.
02:46When she who must not be named ruined my life.
02:49I was pulled from my life of glamour and ease and relocated to here.
02:54Yeah, the house was a serious downgrade from what I was used to.
02:58See what I mean about an opposite Cinderella story?
03:01I know this is different from what we're used to.
03:05At least we still have each other.
03:07One day, we'll live in a big mansion again.
03:09I hoped she was right.
03:11In the meantime, Mom set up security cameras everywhere.
03:14She was afraid someone would somehow find out who we were and try to break in and steal whatever valuables we had left.
03:21That fall, I started up at my new school.
03:23I thought it would be a breeze.
03:24I'd never had any problems making friends before in my fancy school back when I had money.
03:28But here, everyone was staring at me as I walked in.
03:31I felt like a total fish out of water.
03:34What, are you like from Gossip Girl or something?
03:36It got worse in the classroom.
03:38May I use the washroom?
03:40Mayhaps the princess would like a peasant to escort her.
03:44And even worse than that in the cafeteria.
03:47Look, Gossip Girl thinks she's at a royal banquet.
03:50Here, have some slop like the rest of us, princess.
03:53I was about ready to blow my cover and demand Mom let us move back to her old life whenâŠ
03:59Hey, leave her alone.
04:00Your mama sure would be mad if I told her that this is how you minded your manners.
04:04Wow, thank you for that.
04:06Don't mention it.
04:07Someone has to show you some proper small town hospitality.
04:10I'm Sally.
04:11Um, Patricia.
04:12Where are you from, Patricia?
04:14I, uhâŠ
04:15I grew up in the big city with a ton of money.
04:17My paternal grandparents invented trail mix.
04:20But, my dad walked out on me and my mom and took all of our riches with him.
04:24Oh my goodness.
04:25I'm so sorry to hear that.
04:26We used to have more money too.
04:28But, wellâŠ
04:29It's complicated.
04:30It's hard, what with being one of six kids.
04:32Hey, if you'll let me, I would love to help you learn the ropes of a small town life on a budget.
04:37Under Sally's wing, I started to really get the hang of my new life.
04:40She taught me all the tips and tricks to finding the best deals while thrift shopping.
04:45Five dollars.
04:46Final offer.
04:47The art of sandwich making.
04:49The more cold cuts, the better.
04:50Even how to use a lawn mower.
04:52She was a hoot.
04:53While all the other neighborhood kids were riding bikes, Sally would show up places driving
04:57her dad's lawn mower.
04:59And, you don't need a license for this?
05:01Nope.
05:02Weirdly though, I never actually saw Sally's dad.
05:05But, more on that later.
05:06Sally encouraged my painting.
05:08Even if it meant using unconventional canvases, she was the most thoughtful friend I ever had.
05:13In turn, I taught Sally all about how to host a proper high T, and even how to ballroom dance.
05:19Sally was a total girly girl at heart, and I could tell she appreciated feeling like a princess for once.
05:24Over time, Sally and I became inseparable, and we especially loved taking her lawn mower out for joy rides.
05:30Hey, instead of zooming around town, why don't you put that machine to good use and mow my lawn?
05:36I'll throw you twenty dollars.
05:37Thirty dollars.
05:38Final offer.
05:39The hackling skills Sally taught me were really coming in handy.
05:43And that's how Sally and I started earning some extra cash.
05:46In the beginning, we had a handful of customers, mostly our friends' parents, who paid us to mow their lawns and rake their leaves.
05:52But then, Sally had a fabulous idea.
05:55Trisha, you're such an excellent artist.
05:57We should offer painting services, too.
05:59You can even do customized designs.
06:01Oh my gosh, Sally, you're a genius!
06:04We showed up to the hardware store, excited to get all the materials we'd need to expand our business,
06:09but were shocked when we saw the prices.
06:11We were in over our heads.
06:13I went home, defeated.
06:14But then, I thought of someone who just might have some good advice.
06:18Janessa, the apple certainly doesn't fall far from the tree.
06:21I'd be happy to jumpstart this business for you, too.
06:24We'll finally have a new way to make money.
06:26But first, I want to see your business plan.
06:28With Mom's guidance and funding, S&T's landscaping was born.
06:32And with her savvy advertising, our client base expanded quickly.
06:36Plus, I was having a blast customizing people's houses with my art.
06:40With Sally by my side, I was starting to finally feel at home in this small town.
06:45There was just one weird thing.
06:47Sally never invited me to her house.
06:49She always made excuses why we should meet at my place instead.
06:52Oh, shoot.
06:53I totally forgot.
06:54My crazy Uncle Louie's at my house this week.
06:57He always brings all 17 of his pet chickens.
07:00We should probably just hang out at your house.
07:02I fell for it when she told me about Aunt Linda and her six boa constrictors.
07:06But 17 pet chickens?
07:08Yeah, right.
07:09One day, curiosity got the better of me.
07:11When Sally told me she was heading home after school, I pretended I was going to my place.
07:16But I followed her instead.
07:17What could she possibly be hiding?
07:19I followed Sally to the outskirts of town, the bad neighborhood.
07:23Whoa.
07:24Sally lives here?
07:25The trailer barely looked big enough to hold a twin bed.
07:28How could Sally and her five siblings and her parents even fit in there?
07:32Just then, I lost my balance and fell to the ground with a huge thud.
07:36Trisha?
07:37Um, Sally.
07:38I can explain.
07:39I thought Sally was going to start screaming at me.
07:42But instead, she started crying.
07:44I'm sorry I never showed you my home.
07:46It's just, well, I was embarrassed of this ugly trailer.
07:50My dad used to have an excellent job.
07:52And we had a big house and a big yard.
07:54But dad lost his job a few years ago and ended up in jail.
07:58Ugh.
07:59If it wasn't for BFF Enterprises, we would never be in this mess.
08:02He was just trying to stand up to their evil owners.
08:05And instead, Cheryl hired her cronies to make it look like dad was lying and put him away.
08:10It felt like my stomach had dropped out of my butt.
08:12Sally's dad was the angry former employee who'd made a case against mom.
08:17Thank goodness Sally had no idea who mom and I actually were,
08:20thanks to our aliases and dye jobs.
08:22But why was she blaming mom when it was really her dad who put us in this mess?
08:26I knew I shouldn't say anything or risk Sally getting suspicious.
08:29So I ran home before I put my foot in my mouth.
08:32Trisha?
08:33Wait!
08:34Was it something I said?
08:35I avoided Sally the rest of the week, which wasn't easy.
08:38I felt so conflicted.
08:40Sally was my best friend.
08:41But she hated my mom and blamed her for her dad being in jail.
08:45So, I decided to get mom's advice.
08:47I need to talk to you.
08:48Sally's dad is your angry former employee who ended up in jail.
08:52Oh, come on now, Trisha.
08:53What a strange joke.
08:54Why was mom calling me Trisha?
08:56At home, she always called me by my real name.
08:59Mom, this is serious.
09:01Sally has no idea who I really am.
09:03Or that you're actually the co-founder of BFF Enterprises.
09:07Just then, Sally popped up from behind the couch.
09:10And suddenly, mom's behavior made sense.
09:12Sally, it's not...
09:14I can't believe this.
09:15I thought we were best friends.
09:17And all along, your family is why my family is suffering?
09:20Sally, please.
09:22Leave me alone.
09:23I don't want to talk to you ever again.
09:25I've heard of surprise birthday parties gone wrong.
09:27But never this badly.
09:29I probably lost my BFF forever.
09:31But mom was more preoccupied that Sally would out us both.
09:34What are you doing?
09:36Follow her.
09:37Make sure she doesn't talk.
09:38Do whatever it takes.
09:40I hadn't seen mom this stressed out since the trial.
09:42I tried texting, calling, even showing up at Sally's window.
09:46But she wouldn't even look at me.
09:48I returned home completely hopeless.
09:50Did it work?
09:51Will she keep quiet?
09:52She won't even talk to me.
09:54Just then, mom turned into a fire-breathing dragon.
09:57Well, not literally, but I'd never seen her this angry.
10:00Then we need to move again.
10:02Now.
10:03But this is her home.
10:04Sally is my friend.
10:06Some friend.
10:07As soon as she talks, I'm going to jail.
10:09Mom, what are you talking about?
10:11Why would you go to jail?
10:13The judge said you were innocent.
10:14Of course he did.
10:16I bribed him.
10:17My business partner and I were both stealing funds from the investors
10:20because we deserved more.
10:22But unlike me, she was dumb enough to get caught
10:24and unwilling to do whatever it took to stay out of jail.
10:27And Sally's dad figured it all out and tried to get me behind bars too.
10:31But I showed him I am not to be messed with.
10:34I couldn't believe it.
10:35I was so blinded by all of her generosity over the years.
10:38I'd never even once suspected that she could have done anything criminal.
10:42And I felt so awful for Sally and her family.
10:45They didn't deserve this.
10:46But then again, how could I choose between my mom and my best friend?
10:50What mom said next, though, made everything totally clear.
10:53You got us into this mess.
10:55Now you have to get us out.
10:57Me? I'm just a kid.
10:58You're the one who was so greedy that you stole money
11:01and ruined your company and all of your employees' lives.
11:04You even let your own best friend take the fall.
11:07You cared so much about money.
11:09You forgot about what really matters.
11:11Friendship.
11:12Trisha.
11:13Trisha, come back here.
11:14My name isn't Trisha, Mom.
11:16It's Janissa.
11:18So, let me reintroduce myself.
11:20Hi, MSA Nation.
11:21My name is actually Janissa.
11:23Pretty, right?
11:24Okay, back to the action.
11:26I grabbed the security cameras on my way out
11:28and headed straight to the police station.
11:30It had our conversation and mom's confession recorded.
11:33The police took my mom away.
11:34And because I had just turned 18 recently, they let me take care of myself.
11:38And that night, the story was all over the news.
11:41I knew I'd done the right thing, but I'd never felt lonelier.
11:44The next morning, I woke up to a knock at the door.
11:47Sally, you have to believe me.
11:49I didn't know about my mom.
11:50She told me everything for the first time yesterday.
11:53I can't believe you did that for me, Patricia.
11:55Well, I had to.
11:56It was the right thing.
11:57I mean, sure, I probably could have bounced from town to town with mom for years,
12:01pretending to be someone I'm not.
12:03But I don't want to be like mom, throwing my friends under the bus
12:06and not caring about hurting other people.
12:08I would choose friendship over luxury a million times.
12:12And by the way, my real name is Janissa.
12:15It took months, but after campaigning tirelessly,
12:18we finally got Sally's dad out of jail and back home where he belonged.
12:22With mom behind bars, I was finally free to come out of hiding.
12:26Even though I was totally free to move back to the city,
12:28I decided to stay put in this small town.
12:31After all, this had become my home.
12:33I even asked Sally's family to move in with me.
12:35Plus, Sally's dad was able to take over the landscaping business.
12:38With him in charge, business is booming.
12:40Everyone is just so thrilled that he's back home where he belongs.
12:43We did have a company name change, though.
12:46I'm just so happy to have my best friend by my side.
12:50We'll be right back home.
12:53Before we, we'll be right back.
12:5502nd.
12:56I'm enjoying a schö hÆĄn outage in Papa!
12:58I'm exploring my own car.
12:59Luxembourg.
13:00Presentation!
13:01Ingredients!
13:02Try to lean back.
13:03I'll see you in the next pop and how.
13:04Then I couldn't imagine it worth buying happiness.
13:06Even if anyone's still a eatery,
13:07when you see a fairy Sei Newark,
13:09Versus kids game for you.
13:11You saw two people Jewish toys and hacker from now.
13:12ćșă no captured everywhere,
13:13when you see a day from her daughter who knew me andé

13:15We can wait that sound,
