There's more stuff happening at OTAs at practice for the Texans
00:03
and some things that we're already getting out of it
00:06
that feel really interesting.
00:08
All right, so we're going to play a little choose-your-own-adventure here,
00:10
John Lopez.
00:11
Are you good with that?
00:11
I am.
00:12
All right, so there – yes, it's a French-ass name, Yvonne.
00:16
But, yeah, do you want to go O-line or do you want to go quarterback?
00:20
Well, we said it quarterback, right?
00:23
We ain't got to worry about quarterback, right?
00:24
The old newsman in me says –
00:28
If it bleeds, it leads.
00:29
We got our franchise quarterback.
00:30
What do we need to worry about that for?
00:32
What's the headline?
00:33
He ain't hurt.
00:33
What's the headline?
00:34
What do they want to talk about at the old water cooler,
00:36
which nobody ever really does, I don't think, but maybe a little bit.
00:39
Do we still got water coolers like for real for real?
00:41
That's the thing.
00:42
Yeah, there's not a whole lot.
00:42
Hanging out at the water cooler.
00:44
Yeah.
00:44
How do people waste time at work nowadays?
00:46
Yeah.
00:47
They're on their phones.
00:49
Yeah, just in a stall on your phone?
00:51
Yeah, they're on their phones.
00:52
You got to lead with the quarterback.
00:53
All right, so –
00:54
You got to lead with that.
00:55
That's the headline.
00:55
We're getting video and dispatches from OTAs there in the bubble at NRG Park.
01:07
And it's whoever –
01:09
Actually, he's not wearing a helmet, but he is holding his helmet,
01:11
as he did on Wednesday.
01:12
Yeah.
01:12
And it does not appear that he will throw much, if at all, today.
01:17
I think that's the way that Jonathan M. Alexander of The Chronicle has described it.
01:23
And so we're trying to see if he throws.
01:25
Somebody said CJ didn't throw yesterday.
01:27
I'm freaking out.
01:27
We actually don't know.
01:28
We don't know.
01:29
And I'll be interested to see if somebody asks Nick Haley,
01:32
who I know is going to be available for the media.
01:34
In fact, you'll hear that at 11 here on Sports Radio 610.
01:37
And I'm very interested because we know he didn't throw on Wednesday.
01:41
We don't know whether he threw or not yesterday, which was Thursday.
01:44
Maybe we get some insight.
01:46
But at this point, that little nugget, that little mustard seed of what's happening there?
01:52
Yeah.
01:53
It's growing a little bit now, ain't it?
01:54
You're not sounding any alarms.
01:55
Or are you, Figgy?
01:56
Are you sounding alarms?
01:57
I don't know.
01:58
Nah, I'm not.
01:59
You're not sounding –
02:00
I'm not.
02:01
I'm confident he will be on the field week one.
02:04
Okay.
02:04
I'm at that point.
02:05
I am too, DJ Biennemi.
02:09
CJ Stroud is all caps, not throwing today at OTAs.
02:13
So –
02:14
Okay, but the response that was given to us by head coach Nico Ryans
02:18
when he was asked about this after OTAs, after practice on Wednesday,
02:23
was people just have –
02:25
You know, people just have, you know, different –
02:27
Their own timeline.
02:27
Different timelines, different regimens was kind of the way that he –
02:30
like different schedules and regimens, which felt like, okay,
02:32
is this like a day off versus a day on?
02:35
Like, is that kind of thing?
02:36
And it does not feel like it's that.
02:38
What then is –
02:39
How do you feel about his response there now that we have the additional data
02:44
point of –
02:46
I feel a little bit more like I did on Wednesday.
02:50
And that's not like –
02:51
I'm with Figgy.
02:52
You know, I'm not sounding any alarms.
02:53
I think he will be –
02:55
Hell, first preseason game.
02:57
You know, he'll be out there.
02:58
I think, at minimum, when you say everybody's on their own timeline,
03:04
these are all guys that they're monitoring something or another.
03:08
Not just –
03:08
It can't be just his arm is tired.
03:11
This is the first two days, three days of –
03:13
since the offseason.
03:14
So his arm can't be tired, but they're monitoring something.
03:19
Yes.
03:20
I mean, you know.
03:20
Yeah, exactly.
03:21
How could his arm possibly be –
03:22
Did he play baseball in the offseason?
03:24
Well, we have no idea what he did in the offseason.
03:26
He kept it real quiet, which shout out to the man.
03:28
But I guess, in a way, maybe this is where we did enjoy
03:32
and appreciate him being pretty visible in the offseason
03:36
and kind of could make some assumptions based off of the places
03:39
that we did indeed see.
03:41
Yeah, man, I don't know what to do with this, to be completely honest.
03:43
Right, that's a better way to put it.
03:45
I think more than anything, I just keep looking up and I go,
03:48
ooh, okay, what could be there, right?
03:50
What could be –
03:52
And obviously, I think it'd be kind of absurd to think
03:54
the guys that played this sport in particular
03:56
come into every season feeling legitimately 100%.
04:00
And then we know that during the season,
04:02
the only time that you could even possibly be 100%
04:05
is at the start of it.
04:06
Like, we understand all of that.
04:07
I think, for me, that's the part that gets a little interesting
04:09
because you are still wondering if the offensive line
04:12
is going to get to the place that you need it to be
04:14
to be sufficient, talk less of maybe even good to great.
04:16
Yeah.
04:17
And C.J. Stroud is going –
04:19
like, I don't –
04:20
Look, knock on wood, but C.J. Stroud has had to evade in the past
04:23
and I don't think –
04:24
There is some underlying thing.
04:28
Is it something that can be exacerbated at some point during the season?
04:31
And maybe that's what they're doing.
04:32
You know, that's why they're monitoring.
04:33
But they're monitoring something.
04:35
And then there's the narrative, the knuckleheads like us talking about it.
04:39
Knuckleheads is probably right, to be fair.
04:41
The fans, I won't call them knuckleheads,
04:44
but the fans who are like, oh, no, you know, or whatever.
04:48
If – I'll go back to this, and I said this on Monday,
04:50
and I feel a little stronger this way.
04:51
If you know those narratives and discussions are out there,
04:55
and you were okay, you know, and I'm not saying he's injured,
04:58
but, you know, you were good to go.
04:59
Wouldn't you go just to kind of shut everybody up?
05:03
I mean, he might want to.
05:04
Yeah.
05:05
Like this might be – because that's also another part of this is how –
05:08
the way that he is standing is I become real reckless pseudo body language reader.
05:15
The way that he is standing, close to the action, helmet in his hands,
05:19
almost as if at the first syllable of a sign to go and throw,
05:24
he would be in there.
05:25
Yeah.
05:25
I think he wants to be in that circumstance.
05:27
Like knowing who CJ is, seeming – the enjoyment that he seems to gain from doing this,
05:32
the love that he seems to have for the game,
05:35
I don't think that this is a him holding himself out.
05:38
Like this seems like this is an abundance of caution,
05:40
which we know this organization seems to take.
05:42
I think all of that makes me feel like it's probably not as big of a thing.
05:46
However, that little – like I said, that little mustard seed of a question of a doubt.
05:50
And yes, Joseph, I guess in theory that is a reference to like the biblical faith,
05:54
the size of a mustard seed, but ultimately that is pointing to just the smallest little molecule in there.
05:59
And that's – it really is just a small little molecule of a –
06:03
what's happening there?
06:06
It's a –
06:07
That's not what that means.
06:08
I don't actually know what it means, but I don't think it's that.
06:11
I'm going to use it however I feel.
06:13
Okay.
06:13
Actually, I think that's fair.
06:14
That sounds good.
06:14
I'm just going to sprinkle in some eclaircies small all throughout the program.
06:18
All right.
06:18
So we mentioned that, and we spent a lot of time talking about that.
06:21
Another thing that it seemed like is already being mentioned and noticed out there at practice.
06:26
Shout out to Cody Stoops for this one, who I've seen it from at first.
06:31
It seems like Ariante Urshari got the first crack at left tackle before Cam Robinson,
06:38
who I think we have largely looked at as the first look left tackle.
06:44
That's exactly how I think we felt seeing him be out there first on Wednesday.
06:50
But on top of that, Jalen Thomas, who had played right guard on Wednesday, also has been at left guard.
06:56
So that's another one of the depth when it comes to the 17 offensive linemen that this team has.
07:01
But also, interestingly enough, Juice Scruggs, who took no center snaps on Wednesday, snapped at center after Jake Andrews.
07:09
So I guess Jake Andrews still was the first guy out there at center.
07:12
Maybe, like, do we read into that?
07:13
And then also, Juice is still in the running here.
07:15
So that's at least, what, four guys that you have rotating in at center?
07:19
When you go Andrews, Patterson, Scruggs, and then remember Eli Cox, who is the UDFA, that's in there as well, right?
07:27
There's a lot of real—they're dedicated.
07:31
They're true to this.
07:31
We're going to shuffle this around.
07:32
And I'm very intrigued to how much that actually worked.
07:35
Talk about a little bit of doubt.
07:36
I don't know exactly how that ultimately ends up.
07:39
It's not spitballing, but it's just a little bit of everything at now every position.
07:47
Ursary at left tackle is more like, hey, let's give him some reps there.
07:51
I think Cam Robinson is still pretty much the left tackle in their view, but give him some reps at both sides.
07:58
The Scruggs thing is very interesting.
07:59
I think Jake Andrews, if I had to guess right now, is still probably penciled in.
08:04
But they like Scruggs.
08:06
They've said it, remember?
08:07
They do.
08:07
At center, so I think they're giving him some reps there.
08:09
And I'm still interested because it feels like the size that he has, or at least had,
08:14
and I still have not had, obviously, an opportunity myself to get a look at him,
08:17
feels like it profiles more to center.
08:20
And that's, like you mentioned, they've had a lot of love and respect for him.
08:23
Very intrigued to see how that all comes together.
08:25
And from the 281 here on the text line, remember, you can always get involved with the program
08:28
by texting in 713-572-4610.
08:32
But from the 281, do y'all think the way that the Astros handle injuries cloud our view
08:37
on the way that the Texans handle injuries.
08:39
We might be a little scarred.
08:41
I think so.
08:42
But also, the Texans have their own stuff in their own right.
08:44
Like, if I just were to throw up one thing, Christian Harris.
08:47
Right?
08:47
Like, last year, the way that Christian Harris was handled gave us enough scars in and of itself.
08:51
Right?
08:51
To then have some level of questions as to what is happening behind the scenes.
08:57
Even if they're handling it possibly the right way, we just don't have the information on the outside
09:02
to be able to evaluate that.
09:03
And maybe that's ultimately the point.
09:04
As the 281 says, what in the air, Clay, she's small, is going on with CJ?
09:09
I have no idea.
09:10
I have no idea.
09:10
But it feels like we're starting to stumble on the idea that he might be dealing with some level of hurt.
09:16
I don't know if injured, because, you know, football players like making the distinction between hurt and injured,
09:20
might have some little bit of hurt.
09:22
What does that ultimately mean?
09:23
I think we can only really make reasonable assumptions from that.
09:30
I think right now the reasonable assumption is there's probably a little something there,
09:34
but I don't know how big of a deal to make.
09:36
Would it make y'all feel better if they did come out and say,
09:40
yeah, it has some soreness throughout the offseason, but I'd be good if we want?
09:44
Actually, yes.
09:44
You want the real answer or you want the answer that I probably should give?
09:47
No, it would for me.
09:48
Because the probably shouldn't give answer is along with you where, yeah, it makes you feel better.
09:51
The real answer is, no, I feel like I'd become a little bit of,
09:55
the neuroses would set it in a different place where I'd be like, oh, no.
09:59
I feel like we're freaking out because they're not saying anything.
10:02
Yes.
10:02
But if they did come out and say that and they say, yeah, it's just something a little minor,
10:08
but he'd be good week one.
10:10
For sure, ain't nothing to worry about.
10:11
Then I'd probably feel better.
10:13
Yeah, we'll see what it looks like.
10:14
But again, just another small data point in this.
10:17
Did not throw Wednesday.
10:17
Don't know.
10:18
Like, there's just, we have to remember, is they don't know, not necessarily.
10:21
They did not throw yesterday, but is not throwing on this Friday OTA.
10:25
CJ Stroud, the quarterback of this Texans team.
