Thousands protest in Bulgaria against Euro and to maintain national currency

Bulgaria's new government, which was formed last month, has made eurozone membership a key priority. Opposition parties want a referendum to be held.

00:01Thousands of people took to the streets in Bulgaria on Saturday, calling on the government to preserve the country's national currency and not enter the Eurozone.
00:11Marches were held in the capital Sofia and several other cities.
00:16They were organised by the Ultra Nationalist Revival Party and several NGOs,
00:22who believe that if Bulgaria enters the Eurozone, prices will rise and the country's economic sovereignty will be limited.
00:30It is a national will. The national will at the moment says categorically that we don't want the Bulgarian left to be destroyed.
00:36We want the Bulgarian will, we want the freedom of Bulgaria. And precisely because of that we want to be a referendum.
00:45In 2024, the European Central Bank said Bulgaria could not yet join the Currency Union due to its high inflation.
