00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and in this installment of Must Watch, we're looking at movies, shows,
00:12podcasts, and more that defined pop culture in May 2025.
00:21Number 10. Overcompensating. During his senior year of college, comedian Benito Skinner,
00:27known as Benny Drama on social media, came out as gay. This semi-autobiographical prime video series
00:33takes Skinner back to his freshman year as a journey of self-discovery begins.
00:37You know, Ben's gonna be a business major as well. Ah, smart man, Bento. Thanks. I love business.
00:43He loves business. Having been valedictorian, homecoming king, and a football star in high
00:47school, Benny enters college with his future mapped out. This path isn't true to who Benny is, though,
00:52inspiring him to improvise a new one. Accompanying Benny is Wally Barham's Carmen,
00:58who's similarly trying to figure herself out.
01:00No, no, no, I'm not that girl. I'm like you guys. I'm this girl. What?
01:06While in the tradition of raunchy college comedies, overcompensating is a thoughtful coming-of-age
01:11story that challenges the notion of perfection. In reality, those who have seemingly achieved
01:16perceived perfection are often the ones holding themselves back. Do it! Make a choice! No!
01:25Number 9. Mike Birbiglia, The Good Life
01:28Life is full of difficult questions. Mike Birbiglia doesn't have all the answers,
01:33but he comes bearing humorous anecdotes.
01:35Dad, what's the good life? I don't even know.
01:42In the comedian's latest Netflix special, Birbiglia reflects on his father,
01:47becoming a parent himself, and where the two intersect. One minute, Birbiglia reflects on
01:52a stroke that his dad endured, leaving the audience dead silent. The next,
01:57Birbiglia somehow manages to find humor in this personal tragedy.
02:00And that's when I realized...
02:02I can't really explain what a stroke is.
02:12Even at its darkest, Birbiglia's comedy always comes from a place of sincerity.
02:17Whether venting about children's birthday parties or unpacking his meeting with the late Pope Francis,
02:22Birbiglia ties everything back to the biggest question.
02:25What is the good life? However you interpret the answer,
02:28you'll walk away from this special wiser.
02:31And maybe...
02:32that's the good life.
02:36Number 8. The Four Seasons
02:37You don't need to see the original 1981 film to follow this Netflix series,
02:42although those who have are more inclined to understand the Alan Alda cameo.
02:46You were together for a long time.
02:4867 wonderful years.
02:50He's far from the only familiar face in an ensemble piece that allows Coleman Domingo to explore his comedic side,
02:56while Tina Fey and Will Forte stretch their dramatic muscles.
02:59Steve Carell, who has been juggling comedy and drama for much of his career,
03:03again balances both as a man prepared to leave his wife of 25 years.
03:07This shakes up his friend group over the next year as the other couples begin to examine their own marriages.
03:18Some relationships last, others don't,
03:21but friendship bonds these people even during the worst times.
03:24This feels really good.
03:26This feels really, really good.
03:28Number 7. Friendship
03:30Speaking of friendship,
03:32what if we told you that Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd made a buddy picture from A24?
03:37Hi.
03:38Party.
03:40The results are every bit as bizarre as Robinson's fans would hope.
03:44Those who've seen I Think You Should Leave know that Robinson has a reputation for pushing uncomfortable comedy
03:49to levels we didn't know existed.
03:51Writer-director Andrew DeYoung's first feature,
03:54which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September,
03:58is in sync with Robinson's brand of cringeworthy humor.
04:00There's a new Marvel out that's supposed to be nuts.
04:03We should go see that.
04:05Of course, nothing else is in sync,
04:07as Robinson's character confronts a world gone mad.
04:10Or maybe he's the one going insane.
04:12Either way, friendship had us laughing ourselves silly.
04:15If the person sitting next to you laughs along,
04:17then they've passed the friendship test.
04:19I don't wish to continue this friendship at the moment.
04:23Number 6.
04:24Big Mouth Season 8
04:25One day, you're navigating the awkward moments that puberty springs upon you.
04:29The next?
04:30You're still going through changes, but hopefully better equipped to deal with what's ahead.
04:34This sets the tone for the final season of Netflix's longest-running animated series.
04:39That's a real huge deal.
04:40But you're 15!
04:41It's time to dive into the deep end!
04:43I wouldn't even know how!
04:44You're far from the shallow now!
04:46The former middle schoolers find that depression, anxiety, and relationship problems are even more prevalent in high school.
04:53At the same time, it opens them to new experiences that may lead to more mistakes, yet room for growth as well.
04:59Oh, Missy, I get it.
05:01Shame? He's got me feeling mighty low.
05:04About as low as a man can be.
05:06The future may be uncertain, but since there's nowhere to run,
05:10it's better to face that blank horizon with a friend by your side.
05:13Big Mouth has been a true friend, telling us everything about sex that our parents and teachers were too afraid to.
05:19Okay, I know it sounds crazy, but I'm really thinking we should just walk out there and embrace it.
05:25But the future's gonna suck.
05:27Number 5. Bring Her Back
05:29Australian filmmakers Danny and Michael Filippo, or Raka Raka as YouTubers might know them,
05:34generated plenty of commotion with their first feature, Talk To Me.
05:37With Bring Her Back, the brothers deliver another atmospheric, unapologetically disturbing work of horror.
05:43At the center is a devilish performance from Sally Hawkins as a foster mother who's more than meets the eye.
05:49Listen, I gotta tell you a secret.
05:51While Hawkins brings her signature enthusiasm to the role, we've never seen her as somebody so demented.
05:57Nonetheless, Hawkins finds the humanity in a woman plagued by grief, driving her to unspeakable measures.
06:04Listen, listen!
06:07The film also spotlights young talent like Billy Barrett, Sora Wong, and Jonah Ren Phillips,
06:12who hold their own against Hawkins' towering performance.
06:15The results will have you drowning in dread.
06:18Supposed to report how safe and reliable you are.
06:21So stay safe.
06:23Stay reliable.
06:24Number 4. Deaf President Now
06:26We're going live to Gallaudet University where students are protesting because they want to say in their school's future.
06:32Gallaudet University was the first college dedicated to deaf and hard of hearing people.
06:37Despite this, hearing individuals largely made up the faculty for nearly a century.
06:41When the students demanded that the board of trustees finally elect one of their own,
06:45the response was equally condescending and infuriating.
06:49Quote,
06:49Deaf people are not ready to function in a hearing world.
06:53These words proved to be the last straw, sparking a vocal student protest.
06:57I refuse to accept this.
06:59Although Deaf President Now made headlines in 1988,
07:02the fact that many modern audiences probably aren't aware of this milestone is a reminder of how the community has been largely hidden throughout history.
07:09In this inspiring documentary, the central figures refuse to go unseen and unheard any longer.
07:15She had no understanding of anything related to deaf people.
07:21Nothing.
07:22Number 3. Poker Face Season 2
07:25The first half of this crime comedy second season sticks to the proven Hal Ketchum formula,
07:30as Natasha Lyonne's Charlie encounters a slew of suspicious guest stars,
07:34including Cynthia Erivo, Giancarlo Esposito, and John Mulaney.
07:38Being a Rian Johnson production though, Poker Face isn't afraid to subvert expectations either.
07:43That is smart. People say rules are meant to be broken, but a lot of those people are in federal prison.
07:48The shifting settings and revolving door of characters throw a few curveballs, some quite literal.
07:53One of the overarching plot threads also reaches a crucial turning point early in the season,
07:57leaving Charlie and the audience to question,
07:59so what's next? For now, Charlie is doing what she does best,
08:04befriending strangers and unraveling murder mysteries that she just kind of stumbles upon.
08:08Oh wow! Super cool! Is that a... that's a new grill, huh? Is that solid gold?
08:14Like Columbo, Charlie Kale is a character we simply enjoy watching.
08:18That's not BS.
08:19Look, it's no big deal, but at least like 60% of what your secret sister out there is saying is like total bullsh**t.
08:27Number 2. Final Destination Bloodlines
08:29Some franchises never die, even when the word final is in the title.
08:34After nearly a decade and a half, Final Destination returned with a vengeance.
08:39Death is coming for our family.
08:41Bloodlines not only quickly became the series' highest grossing entry, but the best reviewed as well.
08:46The Rube Goldberg-esque deaths haven't lost their over-the-top touch as another group attempts to break the cycle.
08:56The film builds upon the franchise's mythology,
08:59finally providing more insight into the mysterious William Bloodworth, played by the late Tony Todd.
09:04It's sad to think this is one of Todd's last roles.
09:07Given the nature of this franchise, though, it's a poetic final bow for one of the greats.
09:12With or without Todd, we have a feeling Final Destination is far from finished.
09:17Good luck.

09:34Number 1. Thunderbolts
09:35From one long-lasting franchise to another.
09:39In the opening of Thunderbolts, Yelena Belova sums up how we've felt about the MCU for a while now.
09:44Ever since Endgame, there's been an empty void in this ongoing saga.
09:48Maybe there's something wrong with us, the audience, or maybe we're just bored.
09:53Or maybe I'm just bored.
09:55Yelena wasn't expecting a ragtag group of fellow rejects to reinvigorate her life.
10:00Just as the Thunderbolts give each other a new purpose, this film has restored many fans' interest in the MCU.
10:06We can find a way together.
10:10Although there have been some other good Marvel movies as of late,
10:13Thunderbolts is the first in a while that took the series to new places, thematically and tonally.
10:18These aren't the heroes anyone asked for, but they're the ones Marvel needed.
10:23That's why we need each other.
10:26Okay, that was really good.
