00:00All right, welcome to the deep dive. We're all about taking those topics you're curious about
00:04and, you know, really digging in to find the good stuff. And today we're diving into something
00:09pretty interesting. It's actually a specific video from a Vietnamese dating show called
00:15Ban Môn Hòn Hò.
00:17Yeah. Episode hashtag Tone97A. The title, if you translate it, it's kind of funny. It's
00:23basically saying matchmaker's brains tangled by the girl's love life.
00:30Yeah, and I can totally see why you flagged this one. I mean, it seems like a really good
00:48way to get a glimpse into Vietnamese dating culture, right?
00:51Exactly. And that's our mission here. We're going to watch Nguyen Thu Lạc and Nguyen Thi Đan
00:56on meet for the first time and try to figure out, you know, what's going on, what are their
01:01backgrounds, what are they looking for, and what does this whole matchmaking process tell
01:05us about Vietnamese culture?
01:06Sounds like a plan.
01:07Hmm.
01:08Let's start with getting to know our potential couple here. So first up, we've got Nguyen Thu
01:12Lạc.
01:13Right. So he was born in 1990, comes from Le Mung.
01:16Okay.
01:16And he's a bag and backpack designer. Yeah. He's got his own manufacturing facility down in
01:21Ho Chi Minh City, and he's working with clients overseas. So that's pretty cool.
01:24Wow. That's impressive. I mean, that says a lot right there.
01:27Yeah, definitely ambitious. And it's interesting, you know, when he's introducing himself, he
01:31really highlights his personal qualities. He's like, I'm gentle, honest, hardworking, straightforward,
01:38truthful, and ambitious.
01:40Hmm. Yeah. It seems like there's a real emphasis on those kind of foundational values, more so
01:47than maybe, you know, saying like, hey, I'm rich or I have a fancy car.
01:51Right. Right. That like character and diligence. Those are the things that really matter in
01:55this context.
01:56Makes sense.
01:57And he was also pretty upfront about some things, you know, that maybe some people would try
02:01to hide. Like, he admitted that he sometimes neglects his personal well-being because of
02:05work stress.
02:06Oh, wow.
02:07And he mentioned that he smokes.
02:08Hmm. I mean, it's good that he's being honest, right?
02:11Absolutely. Transparency is always a good thing. So what about his past relationships?
02:16He mentioned one, Ryan.
02:17Yeah, he did. It sounds like it was a pretty short relationship just a few months after
02:22the pandemic with someone from his hometown. They were about the same age, but it ended
02:27because, well, she wasn't exactly honest with him.
02:30Yeah, she had another boyfriend. And he specifically used the words stubborn and dishonest to describe
02:38the same age.
02:48So yeah, you can definitely see why honesty is a huge priority for him. Makes sense. And you can see that reflected in what he's looking for in a partner, too.
02:53He wants someone who is gentle, honest, family-oriented, filial, meaning respectful to their parents, and, you know, someone with some career ambitions as well.
03:01Yeah. So someone who shares his values both personally and in terms of family. That's really important to him.
03:06Okay. So we've got a good sense of liquor. Let's move on to Nyondi Danan.
03:09Okay. So Danan. She was born in 1991, lives and works in Long Ann.
03:13And that's her hometown too, right?
03:15Yeah. So we've got a good sense of liquor. Let's move on to Nyondi Danan.
03:17Okay. So Danan. She was born in 1991, lives and works in Long Ann.
03:20Yeah. And that's her hometown too, right?
03:22Yeah. Same place. She works in an office.
03:24Cool.
03:25And she described herself as caring and good at sharing. So it seems like a warm, giving person. But she also mentioned something, well, let's just say memorable.
03:30Oh, yeah. What's that?
03:31Her cooking skills or I guess lack thereof.
03:33Oh, no.
03:34She actually has a good family. She has a good family. That's really important to her.
03:36That's really important to her.
03:37Okay. So we've got a good sense of liquor. Let's move on to Nyondi Danan.
03:39Okay. So Danan. She was born in 1991, lives and works in Long Ann.
03:42And that's her hometown too, right?
03:44Yeah. Same place. She works in an office.
03:45Cool.
03:46Or, I guess, lack thereof.
03:48Oh, no.
03:49She actually said that nobody at home will eat her cooking and she has to, like, beg them to try it.
03:54Wow. I mean, that's pretty brave to admit on a dating show. I guess she's got a good sense of humor about it.
03:59Yeah, I think so.
04:00Yeah.
04:00She even joked, you know, that she's a little short-tempered if people don't like her cooking.
04:05Although she did quickly say she'd plead, not get angry.
04:08So she can laugh at herself, which is a good sign.
04:10Definitely.
04:11But her past relationships, those sound, well, a little more complicated.
04:17Oh.
04:17She mentioned that her previous relationships have only lasted, like, three or four months.
04:21Hmm.
04:22And one of them ended because of, well, it's a bit of a confusing story.
04:27It involved her best friend, her best friend's boyfriend, and that boyfriend's friend.
04:32Wait, so she was dating the friend of her best friend's boyfriend?
04:35Yeah, something like that. And even the hosts on the show had a hard time following the story.
04:40I bet. It sounds pretty tangled.
04:42It's an impact to tụi em.
04:43Dạ, tụi em.
04:43Hai người, có hai người.
04:44Nói lại nè. Nói lại, xì lô ô xanh coi.
04:48Bạn gì?
04:49Dạ.
04:49Bạn.
04:50Cuộc bạn.
04:51Bạn trai.
04:52Dạ, bạn thân của em là quen với lại có bạn trai thì cái bạn đó là bạn của bạn trai.
05:00Thôi, thôi, thôi, thôi. Khỏi kể luôn đi, không có hiểu.
05:03Là anh A, anh B, anh binh anh A.
05:06Mà anh không có chịu binh cái cô, kêu cái cô bạn.
05:09Thôi, thôi, thôi, thôi, không hiểu. Khỏi kể luôn đi.
05:12Chào anh.
05:13Tui trong lần ngoài cổ, tui nghe tui còn mệt luôn.
05:15Hiểu, hiểu, hiểu. Hiểu chưa?
05:17Hiểu chưa?
05:19Hiểu chưa?
05:20Thà, cũng hơi rùi ạ.
05:22Tui đã dí dụ quá trời luôn rồi.

05:27Hãy subscribe cho kênh của bạn nhé.
05:29Hãy subscribe cho kênh của bạn nhé.
05:30Hãy subscribe cho kênh của bạn nhé.
05:31Yeah, you'd think so.
05:33It's interesting, though, what she said she's looking for in a partner.
05:36She wants someone who knows how to care for the family and share responsibilities.
05:40Right. And open communication. That was really important to her.
05:43Makes sense, especially after those past relationships.
05:46Yeah, definitely.
05:47And physically, she just wants someone around her height, which is 1 m, 65 cm.
05:52Or taller.
05:54Oh, and we can't forget about the matchmakers.
05:57Right, Chu Kwanin and Kothinyok Lan.
06:00They're definitely invested in this whole process.
06:03You can see how excited they get when a couple hits it off
06:05and, you know, a little disappointed if they don't.
06:08Yeah, they're really rooting for these couples to find love.
06:11They do a good job of, you know, guiding the conversation
06:14and making everyone feel comfortable.
06:16And remember that part when Dan Ann was trying to explain her past relationship?
06:20Oh, yeah. The male host was so confused.
06:23He was like, wait, who was dating who?
06:25I know, it was hilarious.
06:27But it just goes to show, you know,
06:28sometimes our relationship histories are complicated and hard to explain.
06:33It's interesting to think about how those past experiences,
06:37even the messy ones, shape what we look for in the future.
06:40So before they actually meet, there's one more thing I noticed.
06:42Luke brought his sister-in-law with him.
06:44Oh, yeah, I do.
06:45And she was so sweet, talking about how kind he is.
06:49But she also mentioned that he was a little thin.
06:52And she kind of jokingly hoped that Dan Ann could fatten him up.
06:54He was cute.
06:55And Dan Ann, she came to the show alone.
06:57Now, that whole family involvement thing,
06:59that's a pretty significant cultural difference.
07:02Yeah.
07:02You know, in Vietnamese culture, family input is a really big deal.
07:05Makes sense.
07:06Like, getting the family's approval early on is important.
07:09Yeah, it can be a deal breaker sometimes.
07:10Yeah.
07:11So the fact that Luke brought his sister-in-law,
07:14you know, that shows how much he values her opinion.
07:16And Dan Ann coming alone, well, that could mean a lot of things.
07:20Maybe her family is less involved.
07:21Or maybe she just wanted to handle this on her own.
07:24Yeah, there could be all sorts of reasons.
07:26So moving on, they do the whole gift exchange thing,
07:28which is pretty standard on these shows.
07:30Right.
07:31And Luke, being a bag designer, gave Dan Ann a handbag.
07:35I love that.
07:36It's so fitting.
07:37And she seemed to really like it.
07:39Yeah, it was a thoughtful gift.
07:40And it also kind of subtly showcased his skills, you know?
07:43Like, hey, this is what I do.
07:45I make beautiful things.
07:46Totally.
07:47So then they start talking,
07:48and they get into some pretty important stuff.
07:50Right, right.
07:51They talked about where they lived.
07:52Which is practical.
07:53You've got to think about logistics in a relationship.
07:56Yeah.
07:56I mean, you can't have a relationship if you live, like, hours apart.
07:59Well, it makes it difficult.
08:01So she lives in Akoa, and he lives near Beanshan.
08:04Yeah.
08:04And then they talked about their work.
08:06And importantly, they discussed their expectations for, you know, responsibilities in a relationship.
08:12Which is huge.
08:13You've got to be on the same page about that stuff.
08:15Absolutely.
08:15And Luke was very clear that he's willing to share household chores.
08:20It's always a good sign.
08:21Right.
08:22And Dan Ann, while she was up front about her less-than-stellar cooking skills,
08:28she emphasized that she enjoys taking care of people.
08:31Oh, and that open communication is really important to her.
08:35Yeah, so she's definitely thinking about what makes a relationship work.
08:38It's give and take, you know?
08:39Totally.
08:40But then they had this really sweet moment where they sang a duet together.
08:43Oh, I love that.
08:44A Vietnamese love song called Tien Mung Tiena Kho.
08:48What does that mean?
08:49It translates to something like accidental love on the canal path.
08:51Oh, that's so romantic.
08:54It was a really nice way for them to, you know, connect on a different level
08:57and see if their personality is meshed, you know, outside of just answering questions.
09:01Yeah, it's more spontaneous.
09:03You can really see their chemistry or lack of chemistry in those moments.
09:07Exactly.
09:08So they had to make their decision.
09:10And the way they did it was kind of cute.
09:12Oh, yeah.
09:12How did they do it?
09:13They both closed their eyes, you know,
09:15like they were really trying to feel their heartbeats or something.
09:17Oh, it's like they were trying to tune out all the noise
09:20and just focus on their intuition.
09:22Yeah, it adds a bit of romance to the whole thing.
09:24It's not just a logical decision, you know.
09:26Right.
09:27It's about feelings, too.
09:29So what happened?
09:29Did they both press the button?
09:31Mọc.
09:36Hai.
09:39Ba.
09:41Khó thời gian.
09:44Rồi.
09:46Chính đức chúng ta đã hàn hòa với nhau.
09:47Bánh tay nhau đi nào.
09:50Và mọc nụ hôn.
09:53They did.
09:54It was a match.
09:54Oh, I love it when it works out like that.
09:57It's always nice to see people connect,
09:58even in this kind of, you know, artificial setting.
10:01Totally.
10:02And they held hands and even gave each other a little kiss on the cheek.
10:05So sweet.
10:06A good start.
10:08So being the new couple,
10:10they got a bunch of gifts, which is awesome.
10:12Oh, I love the gifts.
10:13What did they get?
10:14They got some fuquacked fish sauce.
10:17Nice.
10:17Some Lululin Japanese skincare products.
10:19Ooh, fancy.
10:20And some specialty foods from a company called Tan Mien.
10:24What kind of food?
10:25Ban Trang, which is rice paper.
10:27And Salmon Gok Ling Tea, which is a type of ginseng tea.
10:31Oh, wow.
10:32That sounds delicious.
10:33And to top it all off,
10:34they got a discount voucher for a dating skills course.
10:37Huh.
10:37That's amazing.
10:39I love that they give them that.
10:40You know, just a little extra help.
10:42Yeah, it's like the show is really invested in their success, which is nice.
10:46And then to wrap it all up, the hosts gave them their well wishes.
10:50And they use this really beautiful analogy.
10:52They compared their new relationship to a plant that needs care and attention to grow.
10:57Oh, that's so sweet.
10:58And it's so true.
11:00You know, relationships take effort.
11:02Yeah, you got to nurture them.
11:04Okay, so we've reached the end of our deep dive into this episode of Ban Mun Hun Ho.
11:11What do you think our listeners should take away from this?
11:14Well, I think it really highlights the importance of those core values that we talked about.
11:18Kindness, honesty, family.
11:21Right.
11:21Those are the things that both Luke and Dan Ann were really looking for.
11:25Exactly.
11:26But we also saw them being honest about their flaws, you know?
11:29Yeah, like Luke with his work stress and Dan Ann with her cooking.
11:32And they were open about their past relationship baggage, too.
11:36It makes them relatable.
11:37Yeah.
11:37You know, like they're not perfect, but they're looking for love just like everyone else.
11:42I think that's something we can all relate to.
11:44Absolutely.
11:44And we also saw some interesting cultural elements at play.
11:48Yeah, like the whole family involvement thing.
11:50Right.
11:50And the way they talked about practicalities, you know, like location and shared responsibilities.
11:56That was pretty interesting.
11:57It gives you a different perspective on dating in another culture.
12:00Right.
12:01And I think despite all the cultural differences, there's something universal about the desire for connection.
12:07Absolutely.
12:08The awkwardness, the hope, the search for common ground.
12:12We've all been there.
12:13Totally.
12:13Totally.
12:13So I guess the question for our listeners is, how do your own cultural norms and your own personal experiences shape your approach to dating?
12:22Yeah, that's a good one.
12:24What are the things that are most important to you in a partner?
12:27And how do you go about finding that person?
12:30It's something to think about.
12:31And maybe, you know, after watching this episode, you might even try something new.
12:34Exactly.
12:35You never know where you'll find love.
12:37All right.
12:37That's it for this week's Deep Dive.
12:39Thanks for joining us.
12:40See you next time.
