00:00...to Ben Carper or any Ben or any other kid who's going to college, just to give them advice and wish them well.
00:08And I will never forget that. I will never forget that.
00:11And I would just suggest if that were your kid, your son or daughter, you would not forget it either.
00:17Let me maybe do one more thing if I can.
00:23Someone gave me Job, I don't know if maybe it was Hunter over here who gave it to me,
00:27but gave me some words and said, whatever you say, don't forget to say this about Joe Biden.
00:32A visionary, a respected leader around the world, a compassionate man who is interested in everyday people.
00:43All right. I think, Martha, what did I forget? Nothing? All right, ladies and gentlemen, I think that that's it for me.
00:53And with that, with me, where's Ronnie? Ronnie? Where's Ronnie?
01:01Ronnie, where are you, buddy?
01:03All right. Is this the time to introduce the 46th President of the United States, Delaware's Joe Biden?
01:09Let's hear it for you. On repeat. Let me hear you.
01:11Put it on you.
01:12Woo!
01:19Glad you're home. Glad you're home. Thank you.
01:23No, come on. You can do better than that. Go on.
01:26Knock it out of the park.
01:27Knock it out of the park.
01:27Thank you very much.
01:39The greatest honor of my life has been for four years of being the commander-in-chief
01:45in the United States.
01:46The fact is that I don't think if I had come from any other state, that would have happened.
01:55But in Delaware, everybody knows everybody.
02:00And it's important.
02:02It's important because, you know, we had that expression for the longest time.
02:07We do things the Delaware way.
02:09The Delaware way.
02:10Members of the House and Senate know, Democrat or Republican.
02:15We've learned to work together for the benefit of Delaware.
02:19Now, remember, Tommy, we've been coming here for decades.
02:23First time I was here, I was reminded of that quote from R.G. Ingersoll, who said,
02:32when the will defies fear, when duty throws the gauntlet down to fate, when they shun compromise
02:43for death, with death, that's heroism.
02:47I remember thinking that that day, the first time.
02:51Thinking about my uncles in World War II.
02:53Thinking about people I knew.
02:56Thinking about all the people who had laid down their lives.
02:59And ladies and gentlemen, it's good to be with so many friends
03:04on this solemn occasion.
03:07Tommy, Kyle, Lisa, Sarah, Nolan,
03:10and you're all outstanding leaders and proud Delawareans.
03:15And Chaplain, thank you for your invocation.
03:18And I want to acknowledge the keynote speaker today,
03:22a pathbreaker and a patriot.
03:24Chief Warrant Officer Ernestine Epps.
03:28Ernestine, thank you.
03:29And thank you for being willing to do this.
03:30I'm looking forward to hearing you.
03:35Folks, every year we come together to remember,
03:41to remember, to remember the brave women and men
03:44who gave their all for this nation.
03:47Or as Lincoln called it,
03:49the last full measure of devotion.
03:53That's what it was, the last full measure of devotion.
03:57They laid down their lives
03:59so we could live our lives in peace
04:02and maybe the most important word with possibilities.
04:07And I know,
04:08I know I speak for everyone here
04:10and when I say we remember them
04:12every single day,
04:15not just this day,
04:16but every day,
04:17the people assembled under this tent.
04:19Remember them every day.
04:20We come together to remember the families
04:23that are left behind,
04:25the hearts that still carry the weight of their absence,
04:30the ache that never fully goes away.
04:34We come together to remember the debt we owe
04:37to the American military.
04:40Military is a solid spine,
04:42the spine of our nation,
04:46our troops,
04:48our veterans,
04:49our military families,
04:51and our Gold Star families in particular.
04:56Only around 1% of all Americans defend 99% of us.
05:021%.
05:05Just 1% of Americans risk the ultimate sacrifice.
05:10We owe them so much more than we can ever repay them.
05:14We have many obligations in the nation,
05:16but only one truly sacred obligation,
05:20sacred obligation.
05:22That's to equip those we send into harm's way
05:25and care for them when they're families,
05:27when they come home and when they don't come home.
05:31It's a sacred obligation.
05:35I know for many of you Memorial Day,
05:38like for us is deeply personal.
05:41For the Bidens,
05:43this day is the 10th anniversary
05:46of the loss of my son Beau who spent a year in Iraq.
05:51And to be honest, it's a hard day.
05:55His son and I, Hunter, who's here in the crowd.
05:58I don't know where you're sitting, Hunter,
06:00but all the way in the back there.
06:02His daddy came to this event with me,
06:06well, at the same age when he started.
06:08He just graduated from high school,
06:09heading off to college.
06:10And, you know, it's being with all of you,
06:21but quite frankly, it makes things a little bit easier.
06:24It really does.
06:26So thank you for allowing me to grieve with you.
06:29Some of you know, some of you knew my son Beau.
06:35He served in the Delaware National Guard,
06:38including a year in Iraq.
06:40Remember, I got a phone call.
06:41I was in Washington.
06:42He said, Dad, can you, what are you doing Friday?
06:45I said, what do you need, honey?
06:46He said, I want you to pin my bars on.
06:48I said, pin your bars on?
06:50You have two kids, you know?
06:52Dad, somebody's got to do this, Dad.
06:56Proudest day of his life is putting that uniform on.
06:58That's not a joke. That's not hyperbole. That's real.
07:01And, you know, it's one of the proudest things
07:03I ever did, pinning that — his bars on him.
07:08And it means so much to our family at the headquarters
07:11of the Delaware National Guard has been renamed after Beau.
07:17His legacy lives on.
07:18His children, his grandchildren, his great-grandchildren,
07:21like those you lost, will be remembered.
07:24They'll remember who he was.
07:25And just like the legacy of all our fallen heroes lives on,
07:32they live on in us.
07:35And they live on in the strength and freedom of our nation.
07:39That sounds like hyperbole, but it's real.
07:41It's literal.
07:44So, everyone, everyone who came here today to grieve
07:47with grief in their heart,
07:49please, no, you're not alone.
07:53You'll never be alone.
07:55And your loved one will never be forgotten.
07:58Period.
07:59My friends,
08:01Memorial Day is about something profound.
08:03Our politics have become so divided and so bitter.
08:08All the years I've been doing this,
08:10I never thought we'd get to this point.
08:12But we are.
08:13Our troops don't wear a uniform that says,
08:15I'm a Democrat or I'm a Republican.
08:17It says, I'm an American.
08:19I'm an American.
08:20That's who I am.
08:21I'm serious about this.
08:24I'm not joking.
08:27And, folks, our politics has become,
08:30as I said, so divided.
08:33They wear the uniform of the United States of America,
08:37the only nation in the world,
08:40literally, not free,
08:41the only nation in the world founded on an idea,
08:44an idea.
08:46Every nation was founded on geography, ethnicity,
08:48ethnicity, some unifying principle,
08:52but not an idea.
08:54The idea of what America was founded on,
08:56we hold these truths to be self-evident,
08:58that all men and women are created equal.
09:01Endowed by the creator of certain inalienable rights,
09:03life, liberty, pursuit of that.
09:05We made it.
09:06That's who we are.
09:07That's what makes America the most unique nation in the world,
09:10literally, not figuratively.
09:13In fact, folks,
09:15you know,
09:16for generation after generation,
09:18the profound idea has been defended
09:21by ordinary citizens
09:23who stepped up and answered the call.
09:27Because of them,
09:28American democracy has endured for nearly 250 years.
09:33Every generation,
09:35every generation,
09:37every generation has to fight to maintain that democracy
09:42every time, every generation.
09:43because of them,
09:46our government is still of the people,
09:48by the people and for the people.
09:50They,
09:52they are we.
09:54And now we must make sure that sacrifice has never been in vain.
09:58Let me close with this.
10:02The women and men we honor today
10:04were no longer with us,
10:06but you can still hear their echoes.
10:09Literally, can't you?
10:09If you lost anybody,
10:11you can hear their echoes,
10:12the echoes of their voices.
10:15They're asking what will we do,
10:20we who are alive,
10:21we who remain.
10:23They're not asking us to risk our lives.
10:26They're asking us to stay true to what America stands for.
10:30They're not asking us to do their jobs.
10:33They're asking us to do our job,
10:37to protect our nation,
10:39in our time,
10:41now,
10:42to defend democracy,
10:44the part of something bigger than ourselves.
10:48So today,
10:50let's renew our pledge to honor our heroes.
10:53I mean this sincerely.
10:55Renew our pledge to honor our heroes.
10:57Think of what they did.
10:58Think what they'd be doing if they were standing here today with us.
11:00Not only with our words,
11:03with our deeds,
11:05to care for their families,
11:08to support our veterans with more, not less.
11:14I get really angry when I hear about veterans are seeking too much.
11:19They're not enough.
11:22That's where I wrote the legislation relating to Gold Star families
11:26and the rest.
11:27It's an obligation we have.
11:29It's a matter of honor. Honor.
11:33Ladies and gentlemen,
11:35to make sure our democracy always lives up to their bravery,
11:40to their bravery.
11:42And I want to thank you very much,
11:43and I want to recognize the guy who's brand new to all this.
11:46He's only a little over 100 years old.
11:50But I tell you what, man,
11:52I, every time I come, I love seeing him,
11:54because he always pats me on the face and gives me a kiss.
12:00Sir, thank you for all you've done,
12:03your generation and every generation since then.
12:06And, folks,
12:07I want to say this from the bottom of my heart.
12:13And I want to say this from the bottom of my heart.
12:17Thank you, particularly to the Gold Star families.
12:21Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
12:25The country owes you.
12:26Thank you.
12:27Thank you.
12:53Gracias.
