John Carter just had one of those days. First he had an argument with a mysterious Frenchman. Then Alice wants him to pick her up at the park after she has a fight with Robert over him. So Carter takes the roadster just as Marie and Joe were getting ready to leave. But Kendall, the butler, follows the roadster as he thinks it is Joe and his girl Marie. So when Carter picks up Alice and goes out in the country to park - he is shot dead. But the next day, he is found dead in the library at home. The investigation may be run by Inspector Piper, but most of the snooping is done by Hildegarde. The Sultan's Emerald, and a picture of the Cellini Cup, may be the clue leading to Carter's killer.

00:01:00VIOLIN PLAYS
00:01:30What does he say?
00:01:33Wait a minute, wait a minute.
00:01:37You're sure he was born in August?
00:01:38Oh, sure. August is right the next door to July.
00:01:42July, yeah.
00:01:44Oh, you're lucky.
00:01:46He's born under Leo.
00:01:47Oh, no, he's no Leo.
00:01:49His name is Tony.
00:01:51Now, Leo, that means lion.
00:01:54According to the stars, he'll be a big, strong fellow.
00:01:57Oh, sure.
00:01:58Someday he may be a great, a bigger policeman like you.
00:02:02Surest thing you know.
00:02:09Keeps a lion of quiets.
00:02:11Oh, Mr. Cousity, how can you tell us such wonderful things?
00:02:15The stars.
00:02:16I've studied them for years.
00:02:19They're never wrong.
00:02:20Well, good night.
00:02:22Buena noti.
00:02:22Buena noti.
00:02:24Buena noti.
00:02:28Leo's a big lion, Mama.
00:02:30Bob, why do you have to act like that?
00:02:40Can't we spend one evening together without quarreling?
00:02:42Sure, but just the same, you had no right to...
00:02:44Now, wait a minute.
00:02:46Mr. Carter's been very nice to me, and I think...
00:02:48I don't care what you think.
00:02:49I don't like it, and you're not going out with him again.
00:02:52My friends are my own business.
00:02:54I'll go out when I please and with whom I please.
00:02:56Is that clear?
00:02:57Perfectly.
00:02:58But don't think you're going to get away with it.
00:03:00Is that clear?
00:03:02Perfectly.
00:03:03All right.
00:03:04We'll see about that.
00:03:05Take it easy, son.
00:03:06She'll cool off.
00:03:07They always do.
00:03:08And if she doesn't, I'm going to have something to say about it.
00:03:11You know, the trouble with you two is that your stars ain't right.
00:03:14When were you born?
00:03:15April 21st.
00:03:17What's that got to do with it?
00:03:18April 21st.
00:03:20Oh, that's Taurus.
00:03:22Those born under this sign should avoid quarrels with women during this month.
00:03:28Or any other month.
00:03:30Yeah.
00:03:47The car to residence.
00:03:50Just a moment, miss.
00:03:51I'll see if he's in.
00:03:52You had better think it over, my friend, or I may...
00:04:01May what?
00:04:02Is that meant as a threat?
00:04:04Who knows?
00:04:05There are ways of, shall we say, persuading...
00:04:08Then it is a threat.
00:04:09But you'll find I'm not easily intimidated.
00:04:11And the answer is still no.
00:04:13You will be sorry, monsieur.
00:04:15I beg pardon, sir.
00:04:16A lady is on the phone.
00:04:17I beg your pardon, monsieur.
00:04:18I beg your pardon, monsieur.
00:04:25Hello.
00:04:27Oh, hello, Alice.
00:04:29How are you?
00:04:31What?
00:04:33In Cortland Park?
00:04:36Will I?
00:04:38Right away.
00:04:39Goodbye.
00:04:39Goodbye.
00:04:39Goodbye.
00:04:47Will you go?
00:05:02Sure.
00:05:03Mr. Carter said I could take the roadster.
00:05:05How soon can you be ready?
00:05:06Right away.
00:05:07Well, we've got to be awfully careful, Joe.
00:05:09Kendall suspects something.
00:05:10So what?
00:05:11You're not married to him.
00:05:12No, but I'm afraid.
00:05:14He's been watching me in the funniest sort of way ever since the other night.
00:05:17And will you quit worrying about that butler and hurry?
00:05:20Yes.
00:05:30You staying in this evening, my dear?
00:05:32Why, no.
00:05:33It's my night off.
00:05:34I thought...
00:05:35Well, you see, mother is expecting me.
00:05:37Oh, yes, of course.
00:05:38Joe said he would drive me.
00:05:40Mr. Carter is letting him have the roadster.
00:05:41Mm-hmm.
00:05:43Well, I guess I'd better get started.
00:05:46I'm late.
00:05:46I'm late.
00:06:11Oh, I forgot.
00:06:19I told you you could have the roadster tonight, didn't I, Joe?
00:06:23Why, yes, sir.
00:06:23Well, I think you'd better take the sedan.
00:06:25All right?
00:06:26Yes, sir.
00:06:37The sedan.
00:06:37So what?
00:06:39Come on.
00:06:43Don't let him see us.
00:06:44Now, what do you suppose is the idea of him taking out after Carter?
00:07:09He isn't after Carter.
00:07:11He's after us.
00:07:13After us?
00:07:14I told him you were dropping me off at Mother's.
00:07:16He thinks you and I are in that car.
00:07:26Taxi lady?
00:07:27I phoned for one.
00:07:28Good.
00:07:30That was an inspiration on your part.
00:07:32I was a little afraid that you might think that I...
00:07:38Oh, nonsense.
00:07:39I was delighted.
00:07:46Hey, you.
00:07:47Just a minute.
00:07:47What's all this about?
00:07:48I'll show you what it's all about.
00:07:51Oh, Bob!
00:07:52I'm sorry, son.
00:07:58Sorry.
00:07:59I'll show you what you...
00:08:00Wait a minute.
00:08:00Wait a minute.
00:08:01Bob, what is the matter with you?
00:08:04I gave you fair warning, young fellow.
00:08:07Now you can tell it to the judge.
00:08:08Oh, it isn't as bad as that, officer.
00:08:10That's overlooking.
00:08:11Well, I don't want to arrest him, but you see...
00:08:12I'll take the responsibility.
00:08:14Well, of course, if you ain't pressing no charges...
00:08:16Oh, of course not.
00:08:18All right.
00:08:19I'll take care of him.
00:08:21Now get along with you before I change my mind.
00:08:35Now you be a good boy.
00:08:37I'll get that guy if it's the last thing I ever do.
00:08:39Uh-uh-uh.
00:08:40None of that.
00:08:41I told you fighting was bad for you this month.
00:08:44You're born under Taurus.
00:08:45Taurus?
00:08:46Taurus, what's that?
00:08:46The sign of the Zodiac.
00:08:48It means bull.
00:08:49That's what it sounds like.
00:09:01And you weren't using me just to make him jealous.
00:09:05He doesn't need anyone to make him jealous.
00:09:07He's impossible.
00:09:09Well.
00:09:11Well, I guess that leaves you unattached.
00:09:13Well.
00:09:16It's fine.
00:09:17But...
00:09:18But what?
00:09:19But it's very dark and lonely here, don't you think?
00:09:22Well, I don't know.
00:09:23I feel like I'm
00:09:43May I use your phone, please?
00:09:57Sure.
00:09:58You could even use my own escape.
00:10:00Let me have a couple of gallons of gas with you and make it snappy.
00:10:15Right.
00:10:20Oh, God.
00:10:21Alice, what an...
00:10:22Guide me away from here quickly, please.
00:10:53Oh, Bob, what are we going to do?
00:10:54I don't know yet.
00:10:55I've got to keep you out of this.
00:10:57But if we run away, they'll find him here.
00:10:59I know.
00:10:59And that filling station man, he saw us, both of us.
00:11:02You don't know anything about this, you understand?
00:11:04Now, here's what you do.
00:11:05Drive home as fast as you can.
00:11:07Leave the car on the lot next to my house.
00:11:09It's 12.30 now.
00:11:11Carter brought you home at 12 o'clock.
00:11:12This thing happened after Carter left you, you understand?
00:11:15But, Bob...
00:11:15Now, remember, you got home at 12 o'clock.
00:11:17Now, hurry, please.
00:11:22Good morning, Inspector.
00:11:50Hello, Reverend.
00:11:51What do you got?
00:11:51I'm not sure of it.
00:11:52I think it's a murder.
00:11:53Oh, you think it's a murder?
00:11:55Yes, sir.
00:11:55Me and Lally have only been here about ten minutes.
00:11:57All right.
00:12:01Where is it?
00:12:02In the library, sir.
00:12:21A bullet through the back of the head.
00:12:24Might have been shot through the window.
00:12:26Yeah.
00:12:27Who found the body?
00:12:28I did, sir.
00:12:29About an hour ago.
00:12:30It was just 8 o'clock.
00:12:32I had to come in to open the library, as I always do in the morning.
00:12:35And there was the poor master, just as you see him now.
00:12:38Oh, it was horrible, sir.
00:12:40At the time, I thought it...
00:12:41Never mind what you thought.
00:12:43What did you do?
00:12:44Why?
00:12:45Why, I called the police.
00:12:47Did you disturb anything here?
00:12:48Did you touch anything?
00:12:49No, sir.
00:12:50Everything was just as you see it now.
00:12:52There wasn't even the gun with which Mr. Carter was murdered.
00:12:54Oh, been doing a little detective work on your own account, huh?
00:12:58No, sir.
00:12:58But I thought it was strange that...
00:12:59Wait a minute.
00:13:15Hello?
00:13:17Oh, hello, Monsieur Piper.
00:13:19How are you?
00:13:21Oui, this is Josephine.
00:13:23Will you please get Miss Hildegard with us to the phone?
00:13:27Will you hang on to the voire?
00:13:29All right, all right.
00:13:33Oh, Miss Weathers.
00:13:37Well?
00:13:38Monsieur Piper, he's hanging on the voire.
00:13:41Good.
00:13:42He'll be hanging on to more than that when I get through with him.
00:13:50Hello.
00:13:51Oh, hello, Hildegard.
00:13:53Say, I'm sorry about our golf game,
00:13:56but you see, I had to...
00:13:58Now, listen, Hildegard.
00:14:03Will you wait a minute, please?
00:14:04And another thing, Oscar Piper.
00:14:06If you think you can keep me sitting around here for hours
00:14:09and then call up with a lame excuse...
00:14:12Huh?
00:14:14What?
00:14:17A case?
00:14:18Why didn't you say so?
00:14:21Where are you?
00:14:22Oh, you don't need to bother, Hildegard.
00:14:24It's just a little case.
00:14:26A stick-up murder in a grocery store.
00:14:31Yeah, I'm in the store right now.
00:14:34Oh, it's in the bag.
00:14:37Soon as I have it washed up, I'll be right over.
00:14:41Okay, Hildegard.
00:14:43And this is one case I'll handle by myself.
00:14:46Come on.
00:14:46Come on.
00:14:46Come on.
00:14:46Come on.
00:14:47Come on.
00:14:48Come on.
00:14:49Come on.
00:14:50Come on.
00:14:51Come on, Kendall.
00:15:00Who was the woman who telephoned just before Carter went out?
00:15:02I don't know, sir.
00:15:03What's her phone number?
00:15:04You better spill it, Kendall.
00:15:05I tell you I don't know, sir.
00:15:07All right.
00:15:08All right.
00:15:10Inspector.
00:15:10Well, what do you want?
00:15:11There's a lady outside, so she can be a lot of help to you.
00:15:14Good.
00:15:14Now we're getting somewhere.
00:15:16Send her in.
00:15:17Yes, sir.
00:15:18I am in.
00:15:19It's you, huh?
00:15:26Get outside that door and don't let anybody else come in here to annoy me.
00:15:30Yes, sir.
00:15:32Now I suppose I've got to start in and tell you all the answers.
00:15:35Oh, it won't be necessary.
00:15:38Redmond's already told me what remarkable progress you've been making.
00:15:41Wait a minute, you.
00:15:45I haven't finished with you yet.
00:15:47Turned in car to get home last night.
00:15:48I don't know, sir.
00:15:49You were here, weren't you?
00:15:50Yes, sir.
00:15:50I wasn't out the house all evening.
00:15:52Oh, you wasn't, eh?
00:15:53No, sir.
00:15:54Why?
00:15:54I suppose you two also stayed in last night?
00:15:59No, ma'am.
00:16:00You see, it was my night off.
00:16:02I went over to Brooklyn to see my mother.
00:16:04Now, Hildegard, if you don't mind, I'll do the questioning.
00:16:08I thought you knew all the answers.
00:16:15What's your mother's address in Brooklyn?
00:16:17It's 736 Kosciuszko Street.
00:16:19Check on that, Jim.
00:16:20Right.
00:16:22Were you here last night?
00:16:22No, sir.
00:16:23I was out all night.
00:16:25Where?
00:16:26Well, just out.
00:16:28It was my night off.
00:16:29Oh, just out.
00:16:31You better make up your mind where you were.
00:16:33Well, I...
00:16:34I was in Newark.
00:16:36Alone?
00:16:37No, sir.
00:16:37There was a young lady with me.
00:16:38How was she?
00:16:41Come on, how was she?
00:16:42I won't tell you.
00:16:43She has nothing to do with this.
00:16:45All right.
00:16:46Maybe you'd rather tell her to the DA downtown.
00:16:49Well, Kendall, it looks like you've got a little explaining to do, too,
00:16:52seeing as you were the only one in the house last night.
00:16:54Teresa, the cook was here, sir.
00:16:55Oh, yeah?
00:16:57And why ain't she here?
00:16:58Fanning, bring her in right away.
00:17:00Yes, sir.
00:17:02This all sounds pretty screwy to me.
00:17:05You were sleeping in the same house, and yet you didn't hear the shot that killed Carter.
00:17:08How do you explain that?
00:17:10I don't know, sir.
00:17:11I don't know, sir.
00:17:12You don't know.
00:17:14It's funny.
00:17:15Nobody seems to know nothing around here.
00:17:18I wouldn't broadcast the fact if I were you, Oscar.
00:17:26And incidentally, did it ever occur to you that maybe Mr. Carter wasn't killed in the house?
00:17:32Hey, hey, what do you mean, not killed in the house?
00:17:35Just a hunch.
00:17:37Here she is, Inspector.
00:17:37Well, Teresa, what do you know about this?
00:17:42I don't know nothing, sir.
00:17:43I didn't hear no shot because I went to sleep right after Joe here brought Mr. Carter in.
00:17:49What do you mean, I brought Mr. Carter in?
00:17:51That's enough.
00:17:52Go on, Teresa.
00:17:54Well, sir, I don't just know what time it was,
00:17:57but I was awake and through the window I saw a man I thought was Joe carrying Mr. Carter through the yard.
00:18:03She's crazy, I tell you.
00:18:04I wasn't near this house last night.
00:18:06I can prove I was over in Newark, just like I said.
00:18:09All right, go ahead and prove it.
00:18:10Who are you with?
00:18:11Well, I...
00:18:13Come on, spill it.
00:18:15I was with Marie.
00:18:17Oh.
00:18:18And your mother lives on Kosciuszko Street, huh?
00:18:22Get him out of here, all of them.
00:18:24You too, Kendall.
00:18:26Then keep your eye on that chauffeur.
00:18:28I want to talk to him later.
00:18:30Now, Oscar, what do you think?
00:18:32Maybe you're right.
00:18:32You know, I feel that there's more to this case than meets the eye.
00:18:36You've said that about every case you've ever been on.
00:18:39Come on, Jim.
00:18:39I want to take a look around outside.
00:18:44Huh.
00:18:45Kendall, just a minute, please.
00:19:08Yes, ma'am.
00:19:09How long have you been Mr. Carter's butler?
00:19:12Almost ten years, ma'am.
00:19:13Then you should have known him pretty well.
00:19:16Yes, ma'am.
00:19:16I suppose I knew Mr. Carter about as well as anyone knew him.
00:19:19Sort of a man of mystery, wasn't he?
00:19:22Well, in a way, yes, ma'am.
00:19:24Mm-hmm.
00:19:29Inspector, I'm Cassidy.
00:19:30And I'm busy.
00:19:31It's about Mr. Carter.
00:19:36Well, what about him?
00:19:37Well, sir, I just heard about his murder.
00:19:40And mind you, I don't know whether it means anything or not,
00:19:43but I always believe in never overlooking a clue.
00:19:46Because sometimes little things that an ordinary officer might overlook...
00:19:49All right, Cassidy, what little thing didn't you overlook?
00:19:52Well, sir, last night at 8.15 o'clock, I was walking my beat in the park.
00:19:57And there was a boy and girl sitting on the bench.
00:20:00Nice-looking couple they was, too.
00:20:01Only they was quarreling.
00:20:03And being an amateur astrologist, I says to myself...
00:20:06An amateur what?
00:20:07Astrologist.
00:20:09When were you born, Inspector?
00:20:11Until 14th, 18th.
00:20:13Say, what's all this got to do with the Carter case?
00:20:16No, ma'am.
00:20:17He had no close friends and only a few acquaintances.
00:20:20Did you ever know of him to quarrel with anyone?
00:20:23No, ma'am, never.
00:20:25Come to think of it, I did hear something unusual last night.
00:20:28Yes.
00:20:29Well, ma'am, when I went into the library to give Mr. Carter a phone message,
00:20:34he was talking to a gentleman I'd never seen before.
00:20:36They seemed to be speaking quite angrily about something.
00:20:39Did you hear the man's name mentioned?
00:20:41No, ma'am.
00:20:44Could you describe him?
00:20:46Well, he was about the average man.
00:20:48Hmm.
00:20:49But one thing I did notice, he spoke with a French accent.
00:20:54French accent?
00:20:56Hmm.
00:20:58Thank you, Kendall.
00:20:59You're welcome, ma'am.
00:21:00Thank you very much.
00:21:07And Ben Carter jumps in the car,
00:21:10and he and the girl drive off in the big roadster.
00:21:12License plates number...
00:21:14Uh, 6C9278.
00:21:19When the boy just stares after them,
00:21:21and he looked ready to commit murder if he'd ever get his hands on them.
00:21:24Then the boy jumps into his car and takes out after Carter and the girl.
00:21:29Good work, Cassidy.
00:21:30Who was the boy?
00:21:31Well, I couldn't be expected to know that.
00:21:35Well, uh, what kind of a car was he driving?
00:21:36What was the license number?
00:21:38Funny thing, it slipped my mind.
00:21:41It was an old car.
00:21:42Let me see.
00:21:44What was that license number?
00:21:46You mean you identified Carter, who was now murdered,
00:21:50and took down the license number of his car,
00:21:52which is now in the garage.
00:21:54But you don't know who the boy is,
00:21:56and you didn't bother to get the license number of his car.
00:21:59Remarkable, Cassidy.
00:22:01Remarkable.
00:22:02You'll go a long ways.
00:22:03Thank you, sir.
00:22:04A long ways out in the sticks.
00:22:06Inspector, I forgot to say I know who the girl is.
00:22:14Well, why don't you say so?
00:22:16What's her name?
00:22:16Where does she live?
00:22:17Her name is Alice Stevens.
00:22:18She lives up on 129th Street.
00:22:20Come on.
00:22:21Who is this Robert Wilkins you say your daughter was out with last night?
00:22:31Where does he live?
00:22:31Why, he lives in the house next door on the corner.
00:22:35There's nothing wrong, is there?
00:22:37Oh, yes, ma'am.
00:22:42And you say your daughter got home at 2.30 this morning, huh?
00:22:45Yes, I remember it was just 2.30.
00:22:47Alice, these gentlemen are from the police.
00:23:01Is something wrong?
00:23:03Oh, yes, ma'am.
00:23:05I just want to ask you a few questions, Miss Stevens.
00:23:07Where were you last night?
00:23:09Why, I went for a drive with a friend, Mr. Carter.
00:23:14That's right.
00:23:15Quiet.
00:23:16But, Alice, you say...
00:23:17Don't mind, Mrs. Stevens.
00:23:19What time did you get home?
00:23:20About 12 o'clock.
00:23:2212 o'clock, you're sure of that, are you?
00:23:24May have been a little earlier.
00:23:25It wasn't after 12.
00:23:27That's funny.
00:23:28Your mother tells me you were out with a Mr. Robert Wilkins last night
00:23:31and didn't get home till 2.30 this morning.
00:23:34I did see Robert a little earlier.
00:23:36I guess that's why mother thought...
00:23:37That's right again.
00:23:39That's what I was telling you about in the park.
00:23:41Oh, quiet.
00:23:43Now, I want the truth, Miss Stevens.
00:23:45This Robert guy didn't get along so very well with Carter, did he?
00:23:47Why, yes.
00:23:48Then why did they fight last night?
00:23:50Why did he follow you and Carter and kill him?
00:23:51He didn't, I tell you.
00:23:52He couldn't help.
00:23:53No, why couldn't he?
00:23:56I was with Mr. Carter until 12 o'clock.
00:23:58Then you know what time Carter was killed.
00:24:00I don't.
00:24:00I didn't even know he was killed.
00:24:03Alice, honey, if you know anything at all about this, tell the truth.
00:24:06I am telling the truth.
00:24:07Oh, no, you're not.
00:24:09I guess we'd better go down to headquarters.
00:24:10Oh, please let me talk with her.
00:24:12If she knows anything, she'll tell me.
00:24:14I'm sorry, Mrs. Stevens.
00:24:15Go ahead, Alice.
00:24:27Well?
00:24:30A remarkable stone.
00:24:32A very remarkable stone.
00:24:34I think you remarked that it was remarkable about ten minutes ago.
00:24:39Now, can you tell me anything of its history?
00:24:44Yes, madame.
00:24:45I think I can.
00:24:48This is known as the Sultan Emerald.
00:24:51It was stolen from the Louvre in Paris about 12 years ago.
00:24:56Since then, it has been the object of an international search.
00:25:00Does that answer your question?
00:25:02It does.
00:25:06Just a minute, sisters.
00:25:08Why?
00:25:09Why, what's the meaning of this?
00:25:10It means that this time you're tangled up with the law.
00:25:12Well, I've been tangled up with the law for years.
00:25:15And I might warn you that anything you say may be used against you.
00:25:18That's where you're mistaken, young man.
00:25:20Anything I say may be used against you.
00:25:22And that'll be plenty if you don't unshackle me at once.
00:25:25Well, thank goodness I came prepared for just such an emergency.
00:25:30All right, lady.
00:25:31But don't try any funny stuff.
00:25:33There.
00:25:37Hildegard Withers.
00:25:38Why, oh, gee, Miss Withers, I'm sorry.
00:25:41I didn't know.
00:25:42Of course, being in the same work, you realize that an officer has to do his duty.
00:25:47Well, that's all right.
00:25:48But would you mind?
00:25:49Oh, and next time, you better make sure who you haven't pinched.
00:25:54Miss Withers here wasn't the lady she is.
00:25:56She'd have my job for this.
00:25:59I'm very sorry, Miss Withers.
00:26:01You're sorry.
00:26:04That's funny.
00:26:05Where'd I put that?
00:26:06Gosh, I know I had the key to them when I left home.
00:26:11You knew you had the key.
00:26:12You got a hairpin.
00:26:14I'll show you.
00:26:16There.
00:26:23There.
00:26:24And there's the hairpin.
00:26:40Come on, Malkins, open up.
00:26:42You and Carter had a scrap over Arnold Stevens.
00:26:44The police officer's sword and has identified you.
00:26:47You followed him and you killed him.
00:26:48Why don't you quit stalling and admit it?
00:26:50I've told you a dozen times, there's nothing to admit.
00:26:53I did have an argument with Carter, but it didn't amount to anything.
00:26:56And that's all I know about it.
00:27:04Robert.
00:27:04Robert.
00:27:04What did you have to arrest her for?
00:27:10I told her she had nothing to do with it.
00:27:12She'll have a tough time proving that to a jury.
00:27:18Come on, sit down.
00:27:19Why, Alva Stevens.
00:27:25Oh, Miss Withers, I'm so glad to see you.
00:27:27What in the world are you doing here?
00:27:29They think I had something to do with the murder, but I didn't.
00:27:32Honestly, I didn't.
00:27:33Of course you didn't.
00:27:35Who took this girl into custody?
00:27:37Inspector Piper brought her in, Miss Withers.
00:27:40Ridiculous.
00:27:40I know this girl and her whole family.
00:27:43Now tell me all about it, dear.
00:27:46Well, there really isn't much to tell.
00:27:48I went driving last night with Mr. Carter.
00:27:50Carter?
00:27:51You knew Carter?
00:27:53Why, yes.
00:27:55Well.
00:27:56Well, she's in a pretty tough spot.
00:27:58And if you're the guy I think you are, you'll do what you can to help her.
00:28:00I've told you all I know.
00:28:02What do you want me to do?
00:28:03Make up a story just to satisfy you?
00:28:05Looks like you've already made up a story, but it doesn't satisfy me.
00:28:09Robert, I'm sorry about this.
00:28:20Thanks, Miss Withers.
00:28:21So am I.
00:28:22Ah, you walked out on me, huh?
00:28:24Too bad I did.
00:28:26Maybe I could have prevented you from arresting these young folks.
00:28:29Did you see Alice?
00:28:30Yes, and she told me all about your silly fight with Mr. Carter.
00:28:34Hey, what is this?
00:28:35Oscar, I've known Robert and Alice since their kindergarten days.
00:28:40They couldn't be mixed up in this.
00:28:42They're out of kindergarten now, and they're well mixed up in it.
00:28:48Yeah.
00:28:51Oh, you did, huh?
00:28:54Uh-huh.
00:28:56That's just what I thought.
00:28:57Yeah, that's fine.
00:29:05You say that after your little argument, as you call it, with Carter, you didn't see him again?
00:29:09That's right, sir.
00:29:10And you didn't know him very well?
00:29:12Hardly at all.
00:29:14Have I ever arrived in his car?
00:29:15Never.
00:29:19Why, no, sir.
00:29:21Never.
00:29:22Then what are your fingerprints doing in the steering wheel of Carter's Roadster?
00:29:38You followed him, you shot him.
00:29:40Then you drove him home.
00:29:41No.
00:29:42No, I didn't shoot him, and I don't know who did.
00:29:43I swear I don't.
00:29:45He was dead when I got there.
00:29:48I didn't want Alice to get mixed up in it, so I drove the body home and left it in the car.
00:29:53You mean you carried him into the library?
00:29:55No, I didn't.
00:29:56I left him in the garage.
00:30:01All right, all right.
00:30:03Now, suppose you take it easy and tell us all about it.
00:30:06Ryan, take this down.
00:30:10Go ahead.
00:30:11Now, start right at the very beginning.
00:30:12Well, after Carter drove off with Alice, I was pretty mad, I guess.
00:30:18So I hopped in my car and started after him.
00:30:22I couldn't keep up with him, so I lost him.
00:30:25If he left the body in the garage like he said he did, Carter did get him to the library.
00:30:42He's told a pretty straight story, Oscar.
00:30:44I don't see any object in his lying about where he left the body.
00:30:48Yeah.
00:30:53Okay, be right out.
00:30:55Excuse me a minute, here we go.
00:30:56Oh, Bowman, what do you want?
00:31:06Inspector, I sure pulled a boner today.
00:31:08I guess Miss Withers told you about it.
00:31:10By what?
00:31:11I didn't know she was a friend of yours, and I was only trying to do my duty.
00:31:16You see, I was walking my beat when a fellow came out of a store and said they had a crook they were holding.
00:31:21The editor of the Evening Chronicle sent this over, Miss Withers, said to give it to you personally.
00:31:28Thank you, I've been waiting for it.
00:31:35Harris, August 9th, 1924.
00:31:39Police capture, aren't these?
00:31:42Sultan Emerald still missing.
00:31:45She carried them all.
00:31:47Okay, Bowman, I'm glad you told me.
00:31:52I'd have given it a week's pay to have seen it with those handcuffs.
00:31:54Come on.
00:31:55Don't worry yet.
00:32:03Well, what's the funny?
00:32:05You getting out of a pair of handcuffs with a hairpin.
00:32:09Oh, so Bowman told you.
00:32:11Yeah, he told me.
00:32:13Come on, let's see the ammo.
00:32:17I saw this on Carter's desk this morning.
00:32:20Sure you did.
00:32:22And it went in one eye and out the other.
00:32:26Look.
00:32:30Well, what do you think of that?
00:32:32I suppose you think this sells everything.
00:32:35Let me tell you something, Oscar Piper.
00:32:37That emerald was stolen in Paris 12 years ago.
00:32:41The thieves were arrested, but the stone was never recovered.
00:32:44Well, those were covered now, isn't it?
00:32:48I'm glad we agree on that much.
00:32:52What's this got to do with Carter's murder?
00:32:55Don't you see what finding the emerald in his house means?
00:32:59What?
00:32:59That Carter was associated with the men who stole it.
00:33:03That emerald connects the murder of Carter with his past.
00:33:07Very interesting, Hildegard.
00:33:09Very interesting indeed.
00:33:11But right now I'm not concerned with Carter's past.
00:33:14What I want to know is who killed him last night.
00:33:16Doesn't it occur to you that it might have been one of his old associates?
00:33:20Oh, sure, sure, sure.
00:33:22I suppose they killed him by remote control from prison.
00:33:25Oscar, they may be out of prison now.
00:33:29Yes, they know.
00:33:31Oh, anyway, it should be worth the price of a cablegram to find out.
00:33:38All right, Hildegard, all right.
00:33:40I'll send a cablegram if it'll make you happy.
00:33:44Now, let's see.
00:33:45Where was I before you got me mixed up in this great jewel mystery?
00:33:49Well, since you asked me, you were trying to solve the murder of John Carter.
00:34:00Yeah, and I'd still like to know how Carter's body got into that library.
00:34:05Say, remember what that cook said about seeing Joe the chauffeur carry Carter across the yard?
00:34:10That's it.
00:34:12That's what?
00:34:16I'm going to have another talk of that chauffeur.
00:34:18Come on, Hildegard.
00:34:31All right, go ahead.
00:34:33Good evening, Kendall.
00:34:34Good evening, man.
00:34:36Yeah.
00:34:40I want to have a talk of that chauffeur, Joe, whatever his name is.
00:34:43I'm sorry, sir, but he's not here.
00:34:44Where is he?
00:34:45I don't know, sir.
00:34:46He left this morning shortly after the police had gone.
00:34:49What do you mean, left?
00:34:50Where'd he go?
00:34:51You mean he resigned?
00:34:52Yes, ma'am.
00:34:53After he was questioned this morning, he seemed quite nervous, as though something were preying
00:34:57on his mind.
00:34:58Had he mentioned quitting before this thing happened?
00:35:00Oh, no, sir.
00:35:01He seemed quite happy with his position.
00:35:03That's why I couldn't understand his sudden desire to leave, considering the fact that all
00:35:07the household servants were under suspicion, more or less.
00:35:10That's a lie, and you know it.
00:35:12You know good and well why Joe left.
00:35:14It was because you threatened to kill him.
00:35:16Oh, so that's it.
00:35:17One murder in this happy family ain't enough, huh?
00:35:19Why'd he threaten to kill him?
00:35:20Because when you were questioning us this morning, he found out that Joe and I were together
00:35:24last night.
00:35:26Oh, yeah.
00:35:26If you can't get this lover's quarrel straightened out without my help, I'll be in the library.
00:35:36I'm not interested in your personal affairs.
00:35:38You know what you'll win.
00:35:40No, sir.
00:35:40No, you don't, eh?
00:35:41And you don't either.
00:35:42No, sir.
00:35:43No, sir.
00:35:56No, sir.
00:36:26No, sir.
00:36:56Oh, yeah?
00:37:09That's not true, sir.
00:37:10He followed the roadster because he thought we were in it.
00:37:13And you killed Carter thinking he was Joe.
00:37:15I swear I did not, sir.
00:37:16I admit I followed the car, but I lost it in traffic.
00:37:18Lost it in traffic.
00:37:19Then you came home, I suppose.
00:37:20Yes, sir, a little later.
00:37:21What do you mean a little later?
00:37:22What time was it?
00:37:23Sometime after midnight.
00:37:24And Carter was here when you came home?
00:37:26I presume so, sir.
00:37:27His roadster was in the garage, wasn't it?
00:37:28Yes, sir.
00:37:29But you didn't see Carter?
00:37:30No, sir.
00:37:31You're lying, Kendall.
00:37:32If Carter's roadster was in the garage when you came home, Carter was in it.
00:37:35Dead.
00:37:38Yes, sir.
00:37:40But I had nothing to do with his death.
00:37:42Then why did you call the police?
00:37:43I was afraid the suspicion would point to me.
00:37:45Then you carried Carter's body into the library so it would look as though he'd been killed in the house.
00:37:50Yes, sir.
00:37:51I realize it doesn't sound very convincing, but it's the truth.
00:37:54But your library don't sound convincing.
00:37:56Better get your hat on.
00:37:57We'll go down to headquarters.
00:37:58Very good, sir.
00:38:09Come on, Hildegard.
00:38:17Hildegard.
00:38:18Hildegard, what's the matter?
00:38:18Hildegard.
00:38:20Marie.
00:38:22What is it, sir?
00:38:23Get some brandy, quick.
00:38:24Yes, sir.
00:38:31Here it is, sir.
00:38:33Hildegard.
00:38:34What happened?
00:38:35Who hit you?
00:38:35Oh, didn't ask the man his name.
00:38:42Furthermore, don't get sentimental.
00:38:44Oh.
00:38:45Oh.
00:38:46Oh.
00:38:46Oh.
00:38:46Come in.
00:39:07Bonjour, mademoiselle.
00:39:11Monsieur Paver called.
00:39:12He wanted me to wake you up to see if you were feeling all right.
00:39:15I can't feel anything except a slight disgust at being awakened in the middle of the night.
00:39:21It is not the middle of the night. It's ten o'clock in the morning.
00:39:24Is it?
00:39:25Yes.
00:39:26Well.
00:39:32Don't you want some breakfast?
00:39:33Just coffee.
00:39:34Yes.
00:39:34And Josephine, would you hand me that large volume there in the bureau?
00:39:38That art catalog with the brown cover.
00:39:41Yes, miss.
00:39:45I'll get a coffee.
00:39:55The Cellini Cup on display in the Florentine Room of the Cosmopolitan Museum.
00:40:02Hmm.
00:40:12I'm going to call and see.
00:40:14Where is Mr. Robbins' office, please?
00:40:35Over in the corner.
00:40:36Well-mannered little chap.
00:40:48Yours?
00:40:50No, madame.
00:40:51They're just a few of our future taxpayers.
00:40:54This is a public institution, you know, and we can't choose our visitors.
00:40:58That's right.
00:41:10Good morning.
00:41:11Good morning.
00:41:13I'm Hildegard Withers.
00:41:14I phoned Mr. Robbins.
00:41:15Oh, I'm sorry, Miss Withers.
00:41:17Mr. Robbins has stepped out for a few moments.
00:41:19He asked me to tell you that Mr. Gordon can probably give you the information you want.
00:41:23Mr. Gordon?
00:41:24Yes, he's a custodian of the Cellini Cup.
00:41:26Oh.
00:41:27You'll find him in the Florentine Room on the second floor.
00:41:29It's, it's exquisite.
00:41:43It's almost alive in its beauty to really appreciate it.
00:41:47One must live with it, as I have.
00:41:50It must be a tremendous responsibility to guard a thing of such value.
00:41:55You will notice the metal ribbons embedded in the glass of its case.
00:41:59Mm-hmm.
00:42:00Should one of those ribbons be broken, alarms would sound throughout the building.
00:42:05All doors would be locked, and the police notified.
00:42:08An ingenious system.
00:42:09Are all the exhibits guarded in this manner?
00:42:12Oh, no.
00:42:13Only the more valuable ones.
00:42:15Oh.
00:42:15Oh.
00:42:15Oh.
00:42:15Oh.
00:42:15Oh.
00:42:15Oh.
00:42:16Oh.
00:42:17Oh.
00:42:17Oh.
00:42:17Oh.
00:42:17Oh.
00:42:18Oh.
00:42:18Oh.
00:42:18Oh.
00:42:18Oh.
00:42:18Oh.
00:42:19Oh.
00:42:19Oh.
00:42:19Oh.
00:42:19Oh.
00:42:20Oh.
00:42:21Oh.
00:42:21Oh.
00:42:22Oh.
00:42:23Oh.
00:42:24Oh.
00:42:25Oh.
00:42:26Oh.
00:42:27Oh.
00:42:27Oh.
00:42:28Oh.
00:42:28Oh.
00:42:29Oh.
00:42:30Oh.
00:42:31Oh.
00:42:32A phenomenon is with us, though I suppose it can be explained scientifically, I have noticed
00:42:37that the pearl pendant vibrates to the striking of that particular clock.
00:42:42They seem to be perfectly attuned.
00:42:45That is indeed interesting.
00:42:47I've heard of such things.
00:42:49If I remember my Sunday school lessons, it was a blast from Gabriel's trumpet that brought
00:42:54down the walls of Jericho.
00:42:56Oh.
00:42:57Oh.
00:42:58Oh.
00:42:59Oh.
00:43:00Oh.
00:43:01Oh.
00:43:02Oh.
00:43:03Oh.
00:43:04Oh.
00:43:05Oh.
00:43:05Oh, hello, please.
00:43:07Oh, those boys.
00:43:09Excuse me a moment, will you please.
00:43:13Get out of here.
00:43:14Go on.
00:43:14Go on.
00:43:15Get out of here, you boys.
00:43:16Oh.
00:43:17Oh.
00:43:18My.
00:43:19Hey, do you want to drown him?
00:43:23to drown him. I'm afraid you aren't keeping your mind on your work. I'm afraid you're
00:43:28right. But after all, how can you expect me to? My, my, that's fine. Allow me to compliment
00:43:34you. Thank you. It's the young Augustus, isn't it? The original is. I'm hoping my copy will
00:43:39be recognizable. I don't see why not. It's a very good likeness. I recognized it.
00:43:53It's Gordon. Mr. Robbins, he fell downstairs. Is he badly hurt? I don't know, sir.
00:44:16Move back. Come on, move back. Everybody, move back, please. Way back.
00:44:23He's dead, Mr. Robbins. Dead? Why, that's horrible. This marble bounced down the
00:44:33stairs. He must have stepped on it as he started down. May I see that, please? Oh,
00:44:41Miss Withers. Yes, certainly. Blake, you better call the police and tell them we've
00:44:46had an accident here. I'm not so sure that it was an accident. Not an accident.
00:44:53May I see you in your office? Why? Why, yes, of course.
00:45:03You caught me, Inspector? Yeah, I got a radiogram here in French. I want you to read
00:45:08for me. Sure. It is dated today from Paris to Inspector Oscar Piper, New York
00:45:13Police, New York City. Yeah, I could read that much.
00:45:16Let's see. Sultan Emerald and other objects stolen from Paris Louvre, 1924. Thieves arrested,
00:45:26sentenced 10 years, released three months ago. Thought to be now in America. Pictures and
00:45:33fingerprints, following by telephoto. Signed, André Merceau, Prefet Police. Sultan Emerald's
00:45:41stolen, huh? No wonder that copper wanted to arrest Heligard. She may have given me a pretty good lead
00:45:49after all. Miss Withers often gives you pretty good leads, huh, Inspector? Yeah. What do you mean
00:45:55she often gives me good leads? That's all. Homicide Squad, Inspector. Oh, hello, Heligard. What? Sure. Sure, I'll be right over.
00:46:13And another thing, Mr. Robbins. There's no reason why you should... Wait a minute, Heligard. How do you
00:46:29figure? I'm sure it wasn't an accident. I'm afraid Miss Withers is inclined to dramatize the
00:46:35situation, Inspector. I'm supposed to be a schoolteacher, Mr. Robbins, not a dramatist.
00:46:41And I'm supposed to be investigating the card of murder. This is a case for the coroner, not the police.
00:46:49Gordon's death was unfortunate. If it had been anything but an accident, Blake here would have
00:46:53seen it. His post is right at the head of the stairs. Oh, is it, Mr. Blake? Yes, ma'am. I suppose
00:47:01it was an accident that you were not at your post? Not at his post. And I suppose it was an accident that
00:47:07the man who was accidentally killed happened to be the custodian of the Cellini cup. What
00:47:11are you talking about? And maybe it was an accident that I found photographs of that cup in Mr.
00:47:17Carter's desk last night and had them in my hands when someone accidentally hit me on the
00:47:22head. Wait a minute. What's all this about a cup? And what's that got to do...
00:47:28The Egyptian room. The Egyptian room. Come on, boy. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on.
00:47:47What's happening? I don't know.
00:47:49There doesn't seem to be anything disturbed, sir. Well, how did the case get broke? Why,
00:48:11I don't know, sir. You don't know? No, sir. I was the first one in here and there wasn't
00:48:14someone in sight. That's strange. I'll say it is. Oscar, come quickly. What? Look! It was
00:48:30a trick. They got it. That what? The Cellini cup. Hey, Jim, come here. Oscar, look.
00:48:44Oh, Jim. Oh, well, you'll like this. Oh. Hey, what is it, Inspector? Oh, go get some water,
00:48:57Jim. Oh, she'll be all right. Tell me just carting around her head, that's all. Here,
00:49:01I'll get her up here on this. That's all right. Oh, Mom. Inspector, Inspector, the Cellini
00:49:09cup, it's gone. There, so Miss Withers told me. But what are we to do? Have those belts shut
00:49:13off? Keep the doors locked and don't let anybody out of the building. Yes, sir. Yes.
00:49:17There, there. There you are, Miss Withers. Now, just relax, my dear, and you'll be all
00:49:24right. Thank you. Thank you very much. Well, well, little lady. Feel any better? I feel
00:49:29much better, thank you. That's fine. Now, can you tell us what happened? I don't know exactly,
00:49:35but I seemed to have heard a crash. And when I turned around, a man was running toward
00:49:40me. He must have hit me. Oh, look, my model. Six weeks' work ruined. What did this man
00:49:47look like? Well, I, I couldn't tell for sure, but I do remember he had on a derby hat. Derby
00:49:54hat. Jim, you and Robin round up every man in the building with a derby hat, taken to Robin's
00:49:59office. Yes, yes, sir. Now, come on down and see if you can identify him. That's a good one.
00:50:04Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Goodbye. I've written a man in the place wearing a derby hat,
00:50:22Chief. That's right, Inspector, but I found the derby hat. Good work, Redman. Put it right
00:50:27there. Yes, sir. Now, round up every man that isn't wearing a hat. Right away. And bring
00:50:31him in here. Yes, sir. Oh, we're getting somewhere. This is an outrage. That cop must be found.
00:50:44They couldn't have gotten out of the building with it. Unless it was another accident.
00:50:47That's the last of them, Inspector. All right, you. Come here. Try that hat on. All right, that's
00:51:05enough. Take it off. Stand over there. You. Put her on. Turn around. Does that look anything like him?
00:51:17No. No. No, I don't think so. All right, take it off. Stand over there with him. You. Come here. Put the hat on.
00:51:27All right, that's enough. Take it off.
00:51:29All right, that's enough. Take it off.
00:51:31All right, that's enough.
00:51:51What's the matter? Oh. Oh, I'm sad. Oh. All right, next man.
00:51:59Next man. Take it off. Next man.
00:52:09Turn around. In?
00:52:13All right, take it off.
00:52:18Are you sure this man had a hat on? Oh, yes, sir.
00:52:25How did you get this hat? Out there.
00:52:30This is my hat.
00:52:40And you were the one who wanted me to take him out of harness.
00:52:42Did you find the man with the derby hat? No. And of all the setups you've ever gotten me mixed
00:52:53up into, this one takes the lily. Did you find the cup?
00:52:56No. We searched this place from cellar to Garrett. It just isn't here.
00:53:01Who was the guy that said, if you want to hide a thing safely, put it in an obvious place?
00:53:06Shakespeare, wasn't it?
00:53:07No, Oscar. It was Edgar Allan Poe.
00:53:10Poe? Poe? Yes, yes, yes. So it was Poe.
00:53:15Well, if you were Mr. Poe, where would you have put the Cellini cup?
00:53:18On a table in the middle of the floor?
00:53:22Well, let's see.
00:53:26I'd have put it in the check room. Did you look there?
00:53:28No. Then that's probably where it is. Come on.
00:53:43Can I do anything, Inspector?
00:53:44Never mind, young fella. Just go and sit down.
00:53:46Yes, sir.
00:53:50Well, Mr. Poe, where's the cup?
00:53:52Probably right here in this very room.
00:53:54Where's the cup?
00:53:58What do you expect me to do?
00:53:59Switch right up and grab it out of the air like that?
00:54:16Tell the guy, look.
00:54:21The cup!
00:54:22Don't torture it.
00:54:24Hey, Jim!
00:54:25Yes, Chief?
00:54:28Get a squad of men and line up everybody in the building.
00:54:31I want them all fingerprinted.
00:54:33Every last one of them.
00:54:34Yes, sir.
00:54:41There are any fingerprints on this thing?
00:54:43We're a cinch to get the guy that grabbed it.
00:54:46Oscar, I do believe you're developing a streak of genius.
00:54:50Oh, well, in the...
00:54:55Oh, come on.
00:55:12Oscar, come here!
00:55:13What's the matter?
00:55:16Look!
00:55:17Look!
00:55:18The pearl doesn't dangle.
00:55:19What are you talking about?
00:55:20The cup!
00:55:21It's furious!
00:55:22It's a what?
00:55:23It's a fake!
00:55:24Quick!
00:55:25Get Mr. Robbins in here!
00:55:27The cup is a fake.
00:55:28Relax!
00:55:29Hell to God!
00:55:30Come on and sit down and rest.
00:55:32You had a hard day.
00:55:33Oh, my dear.
00:55:33Oh, behavior herself, Oscar Piper.
00:55:35What is it, Inspector?
00:55:36Have you found out anything?
00:55:37Mr. Robbins, is that the Chimini cup?
00:55:39Oh, yes, of course.
00:55:40Are you sure it's genuine?
00:55:42Could it be an imitation?
00:55:46Why, it seems to be genuine.
00:55:49I can't say for sure.
00:55:51You see, Mr. Gordon was much more familiar with it than I.
00:55:54Hey, wait a minute.
00:55:55In other words, if Gordon were killed,
00:55:57no one would be able to tell the genuine cup from a phony.
00:56:00Yes, I guess that's it.
00:56:03Holy God, maybe you're right.
00:56:04I know I'm right, Oscar.
00:56:06I think we've got something.
00:56:08They stole the original cup
00:56:10and put the phony in the checkroom where we could find it.
00:56:12Then figured I'm getting out of here with the real one.
00:56:14Find the one who put that cup in the checkroom
00:56:16and you'll have the murder of Gordon.
00:56:18We'll know something as soon as we see
00:56:20whose fingerprints are on that cup.
00:56:22Oh, Inspector Piper.
00:56:23Police headquarters want you on the phone.
00:56:24You can take it right there.
00:56:28Inspector Piper speaking.
00:56:30What?
00:56:32Are you kidding?
00:56:38Oh, I'll be...
00:56:40There's only one set of fingerprints on that cup.
00:56:42Yes?
00:56:43John Carter's.
00:56:44But Carter couldn't have killed Gordon.
00:56:47Carter couldn't have put his fingerprints on that cup
00:56:4924 hours after he was dead.
00:56:51But he could have put them on before he died.
00:56:54That cup was in Carter's house.
00:56:57It was stolen by whoever hit me on the head last night.
00:57:01They killed Carter first so they could get it.
00:57:04Exactly.
00:57:05Now all we have to do is to find out who did all those things.
00:57:09Yes, that's all we have to do.
00:57:22Mr. Robbins, have you got a private exit to the street here?
00:57:24Yes.
00:57:25Through that door and down the hall.
00:57:26Good.
00:57:31Go out and tell everybody that they can go home.
00:57:33The cup has been found.
00:57:34But keep the front doors locked.
00:57:36Let them out through here.
00:57:37All righty, Inspector.
00:57:38All righty, Inspector.
00:58:01Do a lot of writing, don't you?
00:58:03Nothing?
00:58:04Nothing.
00:58:06What do you got in there?
00:58:07What?
00:58:08Yeah, what?
00:58:08Oh, no, sir, not me.
00:58:12Give me that.
00:58:13Oh, be careful, man.
00:58:14I don't want anything.
00:58:15Quiet.
00:58:20Goldfish.
00:58:23Come on, get him out of here.
00:58:24Get him out of here.
00:58:25Oh, Woody.
00:58:36I hope you're feeling better, my dear.
00:58:37You have had rather an exciting day, haven't you?
00:58:40Much too exciting.
00:58:41I feel as though I never want to see this place again.
00:58:43I don't blame you.
00:58:44All right, lady.
00:58:45You can go.
00:58:46Wait a minute.
00:58:47Got anything?
00:58:48We haven't got anything.
00:58:49All right, go ahead.
00:58:50Yeah, hold on, you.
00:58:51Everything's got to be inspected.
00:58:52Hey, where are you going?
00:58:53I lost the knife and I'm going back to see if I can find it.
00:58:58All right, go ahead.
00:58:59One at a time.
00:59:00Head forward.
00:59:01One at a time.
00:59:02One at a time.
00:59:03Head forward.
00:59:03One at a time.
00:59:04Head forward.
00:59:05One at a time.
00:59:06Head forward.
00:59:07Head forward.
00:59:07One at a time.
00:59:08One at a time.
00:59:09One at a time.
00:59:10One at a time.
00:59:11One at a time.
00:59:12One at a time.
00:59:12One at a time.
00:59:14One at a time.
00:59:17Get your knife?
00:59:18No, I couldn't find it.
00:59:32Well, wait a minute.
00:59:34We go and look for it.
00:59:35Oh, never mind.
00:59:36Forget it.
00:59:37Oh, come on.
00:59:38You want to see it, don't you?
00:59:39Let's go, Mr. President.
00:59:40I'll stare here.
00:59:40Let's go.
00:59:41What's up?
00:59:41I can't understand.
00:59:43What are you talking about?
00:59:46So that's it, huh?
00:59:48Take your hands off of me, cover.
00:59:50Take a look.
00:59:51Stand still, yo.
00:59:53Well.
00:59:54Oh, what a horrible little creature.
00:59:57Hey, Jim.
00:59:58Here's one of them.
00:59:59Get him out of here.
01:00:00Yes, sir.
01:00:01Pay off of my shins.
01:00:02Let me alone.
01:00:03You guys have got nothing on me.
01:00:05I didn't do nothing.
01:00:06Is this the only one, Inspector?
01:00:07So far, he was trying to get to somebody when I nabbed him.
01:00:10Here, take this.
01:00:11You and Redman, stand by.
01:00:12Yes, sir.
01:00:13Get him out of here.
01:00:15Do you suppose that he tried to steal the cup?
01:00:17Mm-hmm.
01:00:18Probably.
01:00:23Was that one of them, Oscar?
01:00:24Yeah, one of the mob.
01:00:27What'd he get there?
01:00:28Oh, a clay model.
01:00:31Clay model?
01:00:32It's just a copy of the statue.
01:00:34She made it with her hand, you know.
01:00:36Oh, yeah?
01:00:38Let me have a look at that, will you?
01:00:49Oh, yeah.
01:00:50Yeah.
01:00:50Just a statue, huh?
01:01:10My, my.
01:01:11The Cellini cup.
01:01:13Well, this is terrible.
01:01:15Now you'll think I had something to do with it.
01:01:18What, you?
01:01:19Oh, no.
01:01:21Hey, Jim.
01:01:23Nonsense.
01:01:24This girl is perfectly innocent.
01:01:26What?
01:01:27Now, don't be any more stupid than this natural, Oscar.
01:01:30Uh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:01:41That midget and his accomplices planned to use you as a means of getting the cup out of here.
01:01:46Uh, didn't they?
01:01:48Uh, yeah, I guess you're right.
01:01:51They would have followed you and killed you if necessary to get the statue.
01:01:55Oh, that's terrible.
01:01:56Oh, but don't you worry.
01:01:58The rest of that gang will be rounded up.
01:02:00Uh, won't they, Inspector Piper?
01:02:02Oh, sure, sure.
01:02:05Now you run along home.
01:02:07Don't worry about it, thing.
01:02:09Oh, Hildegard.
01:02:11Better give that to Mr. Robbins.
01:02:17Uh, don't you want to take young Augustus home with you?
01:02:20No, no.
01:02:21Never mind.
01:02:22He does look a little squashed.
01:02:27All right, go ahead.
01:02:29You two.
01:02:31You can let them go, Jim.
01:02:32We've got the cup.
01:02:33Well, I'm sure glad of that.
01:02:34That'll be all you people.
01:02:37And Inspector Piper wants to see you boys.
01:02:40Right.
01:02:40Come on, Polly.
01:02:41You had a very narrow escape, my dear.
01:02:44And I can't thank you enough.
01:02:45Oh, that's all right.
01:02:46Now just run along.
01:02:47Goodbye.
01:02:48Oh, Miss Withers, you found it.
01:02:52You found it.
01:02:53Yes, we found it.
01:02:54Now you've got twins.
01:02:56Be careful you don't get them mixed up.
01:03:08Here she comes.
01:03:14We've got to get out of here quick.
01:03:16There's been a slip-up.
01:03:17What happened?
01:03:17Don't ask me now.
01:03:18Go on.
01:03:19Where's the cup?
01:03:19Go on.
01:03:20All right, go on.
01:03:21Hold it.
01:03:22Get them up and keep them up.
01:03:24I'll take that.
01:03:25Get your hands on that way, Neil.
01:03:27Watch them, Jim.
01:03:32Wall of a night, Joe, from Newark.
01:03:34We've been looking all over for you, Joe.
01:03:37All right, get them out of here, Jim.
01:03:38All of them.
01:03:39Come on, Polly.
01:03:40Come on, Joe.
01:03:41Call the wagon, Redman.
01:03:43Yes, sir.
01:03:43Nice work, Hildegard.
01:03:51Nice work yourself, Oscar.
01:03:53What?
01:03:53You put Nellie Gumm to works.
01:03:54I?
01:03:55How?
01:03:56What do you mean, how?
01:03:58If I hadn't stepped in when I did, you'd have let that gal walk right out with the cup.
01:04:01Don't be silly.
01:04:02I knew the cup was in the statue all the time.
01:04:06How do you like that?
01:04:08Next thing, I suppose you'll be telling me you know who killed John Carter.
01:04:10Well, I don't exactly know.
01:04:13You'll bet your life you don't.
01:04:14Now that I've landed this gang, I'm going to find out.
01:04:17Are you?
01:04:17How?
01:04:18With mirrors.
01:04:19Come on.
01:04:23Someone in this room shot Carter.
01:04:26I don't know which one of you is guilty.
01:04:28Any one of you might have done it.
01:04:32You saw Carter the night he was killed and quarreled with him.
01:04:35You two were with him on the museum robbery.
01:04:37And if he killed Carter, you're probably in on it.
01:04:39You were with Carter when he was killed.
01:04:45You fought with him.
01:04:46And later on, drove him home and left him in the garage.
01:04:51You followed Carter's roadster and claim you lost it in traffic.
01:04:55But admit that you carried the body into the library.
01:05:02You say you were in Brooklyn.
01:05:03He says you were in Newark.
01:05:05One of his lines.
01:05:09Teresa, you're the only one that hasn't done anything suspicious.
01:05:13So she's probably guilty.
01:05:17Oh, sir.
01:05:18I wouldn't kill Mr. Carter.
01:05:20He was always so good to me.
01:05:25Well, one of you killed him.
01:05:27In a minute, we'll find out which one.
01:05:28Bring in that hobo that saw the Carter killing.
01:05:43Come in here.
01:05:46Stand over there.
01:05:47Get him up, coppers.
01:05:53All of you.
01:05:56Come on, Dagmar.
01:05:57We're leaving.
01:06:01So it's like that, is it?
01:06:03You double-crossing...
01:06:05Yeah, just like that.
01:06:06You two can take the rap for bungling that museum job.
01:06:09But they're not sending me to the chair for killing Carter.
01:06:11Oh, yes they are, Joe.
01:06:13You're on your way right now.
01:06:17Stand back, hopper.
01:06:29Blanks!
01:06:29Yeah, Joe.
01:06:30You drew a couple of blanks.
01:06:32Why?
01:06:33Oh, wait.
01:06:34Stop.
01:06:35All right.
01:06:35Get him out of here.
01:06:36All of them.
01:06:37You two.
01:06:38Get them out.
01:06:41Come on.
01:06:44I had nothing to do with it, sir.
01:06:45Honest.
01:06:45I just said what Joe told me to say.
01:06:48All right, I know.
01:06:49You folks can go home.
01:06:50Thank you, sir.
01:06:51Thank you, sir.
01:06:51Thank you, sir.
01:06:53I'm sorry you two kids had to be dragged into this.
01:06:56But I think it's taught you a lesson.
01:06:57It certainly has, Mrs. Withers.
01:06:59One that we won't forget.
01:07:00Inspector Piper and I knew all the time that you were innocent.
01:07:04Didn't we, Oscar?
01:07:05What?
01:07:06Oh, sure, sure, sure.
01:07:07Oh, yeah.
01:07:08It's just one of those things.
01:07:10Now, you kids run along.
01:07:11Let us know when the wedding's coming off.
01:07:13We'll stand up with you.
01:07:14Won't be long now.
01:07:15That's it.
01:07:16Thank you for loving us, Withers.
01:07:17Oh, that's all right now.
01:07:20So long, Inspector.
01:07:21So long, you, fella.
01:07:24Well, held to guard.
01:07:25That's another one in the bag.
01:07:26Yes, Oscar.
01:07:27Only I'm a little disappointed.
01:07:29You double-crossed me.
01:07:30How so?
01:07:31You never told me there was a witness to the Carter murder.
01:07:34Witness?
01:07:35That tramp.
01:07:38What do you mean, tramp?
01:07:42Jim!
01:07:42Anything else, Inspector?
01:07:48No, that's all, boy.
01:07:50You did a swell job.
01:07:51Don't forget to take those blanks out of your guns, though.
01:07:53Put in the real thing.
01:07:54You might need them sometime.
01:07:56Did they all have blanks?
01:07:58Well, sure.
01:07:59Look.
01:08:00Was I supposed to have blanks, too?
01:08:08Missed in the real thing.
01:08:21You
