00:00:00Team Captains Richie Benno and Frank Worrell are watched by an anxious curator as they examine
00:00:18the pitch before the start of play. The playing area is damp and Worrell is not concerned about
00:00:23losing the toss. Benno has a difficult decision to make and there's a murmur of excitement as
00:00:28Cammy Smith and Conrad Hunt come out to open the innings after Benno decided to field. It's expected
00:00:33that Alan Davidson will be able to extract some lift from the pitch and the opening spell could
00:00:38have a vital bearing on the result of this fifth and final test. Conrad Hunt will face the first
00:00:48ball of the match, a match which will decide the eventful series between Australia and the West
00:00:52Indies. The first runs come off the second ball of the over. Batsmen scamper through for two runs as
00:01:07Australia's champion left-hand batsman Neil Harvey re-enters the test match scene after missing the
00:01:12Adelaide match. Harvey and Davidson have both recovered from their recent injuries. There's life in the pitch
00:01:24and Davidson makes the ball lift off a good length. Hunt survives an appeal for leg before wicket and he
00:01:30has a bruised leg to worry about as the players change over. It was an interesting start and now
00:01:35it's Frank Messon to resume the bowling to Cammy Smith. From the Australian viewpoint the bowlers
00:01:55will have to break through in the pre-lunch session to justify Richie Benno's decision to take last use
00:02:00of the pitch. However, it's not easy for the fast men because the approaches are greasy and damp.
00:02:06Cammy Smith loses his foothold but there's enough power in the stroke to give him three runs.
00:02:25Misson, like Davidson, is making the ball lift to an awkward height
00:02:29and Hunt appears a little uncertain. Batsmen have survived two overs with seven runs on the board.
00:02:35Conditions are suitable for fast bowlers but Cammy Smith gives Davidson a typical West Indian reprisal.
00:02:48Batsmen have shown their liking for attack but even Cammy Smith will battle for runs on this pitch.
00:02:53Now both batsmen have been struck and it appears that there was merit in Benno's decision to field.
00:02:59Alan Davidson is making the ball dip in the heavy atmosphere and Smith is not very comfortable
00:03:04throughout this over.
00:03:06This is not a spectacular start for those who expected batting fireworks yet the struggle
00:03:28between bat and ball is exciting in its own right. Batsmen are forced to concentrate on surviving the
00:03:34early period because the pitch should improve as the day wears on.
00:03:46Benno has placed an attacking field in an all-out effort to capture wickets.
00:03:50Runs are coming at a dawdling rate from West Indian standards and at this stage the bowlers are dominating the play.
00:03:56Cammie Smith cracks the ball through the leg side field and it will be a certain four under normal
00:04:08conditions. However the outfield is slow and the ball stops before the bounce. Smith and Hunt make amends by
00:04:14taking three for the shot and one for the throw. The four runs to Smith are his last in this innings.
00:04:23A miss and full toss, Smith slams the ball into the covers where Norman O'Neill holds a remarkable catch.
00:04:29Smith caught off the one loose ball of the morning. He made 11 runs and Rowan Canhye comes in to face Misson.
00:04:41Canhye is a vital batsman for the West Indians and a great favourite with the Melbourne crowd.
00:05:01He's a problem for the bowlers and Davidson greets him with a bumper.
00:05:05Davidson and Benno are worried by the marks caused by the bowler's feet and a ground attendant comes
00:05:14on with sawdust to fill up the worn patches. The pitch is still wet at both ends and it's hard for
00:05:19the fast men to retain their footing. The play is soon ready to start and Davidson is careful with his
00:05:25approach as he bowls to hunt. Two runs to hunt and Davidson races in to retaliate with a sizzling bumper.
00:05:45The first change in the bowling comes when Ken Mackay is brought on. Canhye is able to score his first
00:05:59run and in fact this is the only run scored off the oak. Kai has an attacking field for his medium
00:06:05races and try as he might Hunt can't force him away.
00:06:19Mackay bowled a loan over to allow the fast bowlers to change ends. This is Misson from the northern end
00:06:25and Kanhye delights the big audience with a fine shot packed up by smart running between the wickets.
00:06:41Race through to complete four runs and Kanhye is living up to his great reputation at the Melbourne
00:06:46ground but Misson tames the mercurial batsman with his well-directed bowling.
00:06:55The first one is the first one.
00:07:15Kanhye takes a single to retain the strike much to the delight of his admirers.
00:07:20Davidson now from the far end and Kanhye is on the attack again.
00:07:25Kanhye is playing in innings of varied modes. One moment confident and aggressive and the next
00:07:35uncertain and tentative. Full credit goes to the bowlers for their efforts in confusing this brilliant
00:07:39player.
00:07:40There's a period of brighter cricket and runs come freely in Misson's next over.
00:08:00The West Indian scoring machine seems to be missing on one cylinder. Things go along smoothly for a
00:08:16while and then both batsmen lapse into a period of uncertainty. It's like watching a man on a tightrope
00:08:22and everyone on the ground, with the possible exception of the umpires, has the feeling that a wicket could tumble at any time.
00:08:36Canhye and Hunt take the score past 50 and the runs have been scored in the slow time of 90 minutes.
00:08:46However, the scoring rate for over is reasonable, because with the exception of one over by Mackay, the opening bowlers have been kept on since the start of play.
00:09:00A main bowling change comes with the introduction of Richie Benno and his leg spinners. Kanhye provides some bright moments in this over.
00:09:14A main bowling change comes with the introduction of Richie Benno and his leg spinners. Kanhye provides some bright moments in this over.
00:09:28A main bowling change comes with the introduction of Richie Benno and his leg spinners. Kanhye provides some bright moments in this over.
00:09:32In this over.
00:09:58West Indian player Tom Deardney looks for some film highlights.
00:10:01And Kanhye obliges with a fine attacking stroke.
00:10:05The quick blow of runs is stopped by Alan Davidson. And in this over, Hunt is really in trouble.
00:10:23It's quiet at one end and full of action at the other. Benno is the polar and Kanhye is the batsman.
00:10:41Benno catches a great wicket for Australia when Kanhye snicks and he's out, caught by Hunt.
00:10:59Kanhye scored 38 and Sobers comes in to join Hunt.
00:11:09Sobers is long overdue for a big score, but he seems to lack the touch he displayed in Brisbane and Sydney.
00:11:19A good over by Alan Davidson. And Benno continues to hunt. Things are quieter since Kanhye's dismissal.
00:11:23And both batsmen battle hard against a first class bowling attack.
00:11:27A good over by Alan Davidson. And Benno continues to hunt.
00:11:45Things are quieter since Kanhye's dismissal and both batsmen battle hard against a first class bowling attack.
00:11:51a third class bowling attack.
00:12:21A few minutes after lunch, Davidson gets a wicket. Hunt tries to cut, snicks, and he's
00:12:30out, caught by Simmson.
00:12:32West Indies, three for 81, and Worrell is the next batsman to face Benner.
00:12:48His forcing shot past point is the first example of Sober's scoring ability. He, like Kanhai,
00:12:54mixes up some flashes of brilliance with periods of tentative batting.
00:13:14There's another change in the bowling, and Johnny Martin comes on. Worrell, who's pasted
00:13:18Martin on previous occasions, is much more subdued in this innings.
00:13:30Martin captures Worrell's wicket when the ball flies in the air and Grout takes the catch.
00:13:34Worrell out for 10, and the West Indies have lost four for 107. Lashley joins Sobers, and the two left-handers start a partnership which yielded more than 80 runs.
00:13:46Both spinners are attacked in a period of solid batting.
00:13:52All right.
00:14:56The West Indians have fought back, and Simpson is brought on with his leg spinners.
00:15:18This single takes the score to 200.
00:15:35Off the next ball, Lashley is out, caught missing, bowled Beno for 41.
00:15:40And half the West Indian side is out with 200 runs on the ball.
00:15:43Jerry Alexander is the new batsman to face Beno.
00:15:51And the great left-hand batsman is out for 64.
00:15:58The West Indians have lost six wickets for 204.
00:16:05The West Indians have lost six wickets for 204.
00:16:10Let's play.
00:16:11Alexander gets two runs for the stroke to take his personal score to 11, and the total to
00:16:17221 for the loss of six wickets.
00:16:19Alexander's stay at the wickets is short-lived, and the next ball sees McDonald take a great
00:16:24catch at short square leg.
00:16:26Alexander caught McDonald's.
00:16:27Alexander caught McDonald's bold miss in 11, Solomon is not out 9, and Lance Gibbs is
00:16:33the new batsman.
00:16:35The scoring rate has been slow in comparison to the earlier test matches, but the lively
00:16:44attack, a helpful pitch, and a slow outfield have combined to make run getting difficult.
00:16:48It's been absorbing cricket, with the bowlers taking full advantage of the catch.
00:16:53The next ball sees McDonald's take a great catch at short square leg.
00:16:58Alexander caught McDonald's, bold miss in 11, Solomon is not out 9, and Lance Gibbs is the
00:17:01new batsman.
00:17:02The scoring rate has been slow in comparison to the earlier test matches.
00:17:04Solomon and Gibbs are looking for runs in an effort to build the score to a respectable
00:17:09size.
00:17:18Gibbs provides relief in a day of tense and grim cricket.
00:17:21Some of his strokes are weird, but the runs count, and that's the important thing as
00:17:25far as the West Indians are concerned.
00:17:27Gibbs gets three runs to take his score to 11 in only 12 minutes at the crease.
00:17:32Gibbs stay is cut short by fast bowler Frank Misson.
00:17:35A catch to Peter Burge at backward point, and Gibbs is out for 11.
00:17:39It's eight for 235 with Misson bowling to Wesley Hall.
00:17:51Hall, in typical fashion, brings humour to the test match scene, and even the fieldsmen participate
00:17:56in a comedy of errors.
00:17:58Hall and Solomon remain until stumps, and the players prepare to start the second day
00:18:05in brilliant sunshine.
00:18:07The match has created tremendous interest, and a crowd estimated at 70,000 is present to
00:18:12see the start of play.
00:18:13Davidson shows that he means business, and Solomon is hit by the rising ball.
00:18:18Benno sets an attacking field, but Solomon and Hall bat stubbornly in a valuable partnership
00:18:27for the West Indians.
00:18:35Hall is restraining his natural aggression, but his cricket life seems to run in parallel
00:18:39with comedy.
00:18:40He swings, and his bat is shattered by the force of the impact.
00:18:44This brings roars of laughter from the crowd, and as far as Hall is concerned, it's the end
00:18:49of a good bat.
00:18:50For sheer entertainment value, the big fast bowler is probably the outstanding member of
00:19:00the West Indian team.
00:19:01His infectious good humour, coupled with real cricketing ability, has made him the focal point
00:19:06of attention.
00:19:07Play resumes with Simpson bowling, and Solomon takes the limelight with some forceful batter.
00:19:20Solomon's fighting display wins him the admiration of the spectators.
00:19:37The Australians have met a real stumbling block in this happy little fellow, whose ability
00:19:41is far superior to most number eight batsmen. Solomon, with his quiet, steady style, contrasts
00:19:46sharply with the showmanship and spectacular flourish of Wesley Hall.
00:19:57This ninth wicket stand is great fun for the crowd, great value for the West Indies, and
00:20:01great mutants for Australia.
00:20:03Hall, with his strange array of strokes, has featured in several stands during the current
00:20:07series, and it's safe to assume that the Australian players don't regard him as a joke.
00:20:12One noticeable point from the experts' view is that the spinners are not getting the same
00:20:15lift from the pitch as they did on the first day.
00:20:32The batting conditions are far better.
00:20:34The pitch is playing true, and the outfield is dried out completely.
00:20:38Run getting is much easier, and both Solomon and Hall are able to score steadily.
00:20:42Allen Davidson is not quite at top speed, and he concedes some more runs in this over.
00:20:52Solomon now has taken his score into the 30s, and already this partnership has added 40 runs.
00:20:57Davidson tries a bumper, but nothing seems to ruffle the calm of Joe Solomon.
00:21:16Another over-ends, and whether it's speed or spin, the bowlers at the moment can't break through.
00:21:22The batsmen have held out the bowling for almost an hour, and Solomon in particular has not looked like losing his wicket.
00:21:37He seems capable of getting a big score, provided he can get support from Hall and Valentine to follow.
00:21:55There's a change in the bowling, and the Australian captain replaces Davidson.
00:22:07Solomon forces Benno away to move into the 40s and take the total past 280.
00:22:12Benno's decision to bowl almost brings a wicket when Hall is confused by the spinning ball.
00:22:27Grout looks for a stumping, but the back foot is well and truly anchored behind the crease.
00:22:31The next ball, and he's in trouble again.
00:22:42The end of a good over from Benno.
00:22:44It's an all-spin attack with Simpson continuing to bowl to Solomon.
00:22:50Hall, with one of his quaint shots, is able to take a single, and now the Hall-Solomon partnership has reached 50.
00:23:05The stand for the ninth wicket has built up the score to a much more respectable size.
00:23:19A total of 300-odd will place the West Indians in a reasonable position,
00:23:23and Richie Benno must begrudge every run scored by these two batsmen.
00:23:39Hall continues to live dangerously and score runs at the same time.
00:23:43This is worth three more runs, and the West Indies total moves on to 290.
00:23:53Another bowling change, and Frank Misson bowls to Hall.
00:24:06Hall has trouble playing the ball pitched right up to the batsmen.
00:24:10Misson seizes his opportunity, and he takes a wicket with this ball.
00:24:13Hall, bowled Misson 21, and the West Indians are nine wickets down.
00:24:23Apparently, Richie Benno considers that the end is not far distant, because he signals that drinks are not required.
00:24:29Misson bowls to Alf Valentine, the last of the West Indians.
00:24:38Valentine survives the over, and Benno continues to Solomon.
00:24:48He announces the graphic close-up of the Solomon run-up.
00:24:57West Indies all out for 292.
00:25:00The match in this exciting stage will be watched by a world record crowd for any cricket match.
00:25:05West Indians come out on the field before an audience which built up to a total of 90,800 later in the day.
00:25:12This figure bettered the previous record of 87,000 established at this very ground when Australia played England in 1937.
00:25:20Wesley Hall opens the bowling, and Bobby Simpson is taking strike.
00:25:33The giant fast bowler with his run of 27 yards is a frightening experience for any batsman,
00:25:38and Simpson has the unenviable task of facing this opening over.
00:25:41The pitch may lack the life of the first morning, but Hall at any time is a menacing bowler.
00:25:48Simpson is struck on the wrist by the last ball of the over.
00:26:00There's concern for Australia when Simpson displays obvious signs of distress.
00:26:04Peter Lashley, Cammy Smith, and Gerry Alexander offer sympathy,
00:26:07and play is held up for several minutes while Simpson recovers from the effects of the blow.
00:26:12Simpson gets a great round of applause, and play continues with Worrell bowling.
00:26:20McDonald scores his first run, and the Australians have begun their task of overhauling the West Indian score.
00:26:26This is a varied new ball attack, and the medium paces of Worrell are pleasant relief from the express deliveries of Hall.
00:26:33Five runs are scored off the first over by Worrell.
00:26:56It's Hall again, starting his second over, and McDonald scores with strokes behind the wicket.
00:27:01.
00:27:21Hall sends down a bumper to give Simpson a torrid dive.
00:27:24This is an atmosphere of test-match heat, and Bobby Simpson is meeting the full force of Hall's bowling.
00:27:29.
00:27:37The end of the over, and the tension eases when Worrell takes up the attack.
00:27:41Simpson and McDonald push the score along by picking up singles.
00:27:45The last ball of Worrell's over, and the vast audience is simmering with excitement as Hall starts to move in.
00:27:55McDonald watches the ball carefully, but later in this over, the batsmen can pick off the looser balls with powerful scoring strokes.

00:34:26With the rest of the Oba, Verge is forced to concentrate on self-preservation.
00:34:36Verge survives the ordeal, and those outside the boundary can afford to smile.
00:34:40Sobers now, continuing his long spell, and he's got Harvey in bother with a good ball.
00:34:47Harvey is trapped off the next ball, Alexander takes the catch behind the wicket, and Harvey
00:34:51is out for five.
00:34:52This is a big disappointment for the Australians, and it's a fine effort by the West Indians
00:34:57to take two for 24 during the morning.
00:35:00What a great cricketer is Garfield Sobers.
00:35:03He's now to Alan Davidson.
00:35:13Davidson forces the ball away to score his first run, and now it's the Australians who
00:35:17need to regain the initiative.
00:35:20Throughout the morning, the depleted bowling line-up has caught the attention, and the West
00:35:23Indians are right back in the game.
00:35:41Davidson has started in confident fashion, but the next ball from Hall brings an addition
00:35:44to the growing casualty list.
00:35:47Davidson attempts a hook shot, and he injures his right leg with the force of his swing.
00:35:51Bad luck for Davidson, and Australia, because the injury could affect his bowling.
00:36:00Davidson indicates that he's ready to bat on, and Hall comes bounding in.
00:36:04Davidson takes a single, and his limping run confirms his discomfort.
00:36:12Burge, who started the morning in bright style, suffers a batting slump after passing his half-century.
00:36:17The bowlers have gained the upper hand now, and the trend of play has turned in favour of
00:36:21the West Indians.
00:36:22Davidson, with his positive stroking, tries to hit his team out of trouble.
00:36:26Very good.
00:36:27So many years now, all the places that are in a good shape.
00:36:29This has been a problem, but there are a lot of things that can be backwards, all these
00:36:31things that can be changed.
00:36:32That's how I am.
00:36:33I think that's all the nice things that can be brought to you for the last place, in
00:36:34the West, which is the most important thing about the opportunity.
00:36:35Doing a better event.
00:36:36Every single day in the year just can probably be a little bit worthwhile.
00:36:37And, again, the years are still so far, we are going for that feeling.
00:36:38The age of that, of course, I thought of a Woolsey and a gift, so I thought of
00:36:40you, that's how I decided to get this...
00:36:41And I'm going for a moment.
00:36:42I'm going for you now.
00:36:43I'm going for another Monday, so I want to get this.
00:36:44I'm going for a moment.
00:36:56The aggressive play is a forerunner to some exciting cricket. Few people anticipate the riot of runs in halls next over.
00:40:23out his downfall.
00:40:30Beno bowled for three and Australia has lost its eighth wicket with a lead of 27 on the
00:40:34first innings. Gibbs bowls to the new batsman Frank Misson.
00:40:42Incident follows incident with every over. Sobers bowling his umpteenth over, Martin
00:40:46is almost bowled and it's four more to the Australian score.
00:40:57This is a great sustained performance by Sobers and he gets another wicket when Johnny Martin
00:41:01goes for a big hit. The ball goes to Ken High at short square leg and Martin is up for five.
00:41:14A remarkable recovery by the West Indians. Australia nine wickets down and Sobers has
00:41:19dismissed five batsmen. It's Grout now facing Sobers.
00:41:27That's the end of a long uninterrupted spell by Sobers in which he bowled nearly 40 overs.
00:41:32After Gibbs and Grout starts to hit out in the stand for the last wicket.
00:41:49Sobers is replaced by Wesley Hall and the big fast bowler can't stop the tailenders as they
00:41:54add more runs to the Australian score.
00:42:01Paul's accurate drop kick back to Alexander delights the football fans in the crowd of 50,000.
00:42:23Gibbs comes in for another and Grout is well and truly beaten.
00:42:30The Australian innings comes to an end with this ball.
00:42:37The crowd is caught by Hunt in the outfield and the West Indians have put a sustained effort
00:42:42of good bowling and smart fielding to dismiss seven Australian batsmen for 120 runs since the start of play.
00:42:49Garfield Sobers has the honour of leading the players off the field.
00:42:56Australia has only a slender lead of 64 runs as Conrad Hunt faces Davidson and the West Indians are off to a good start.
00:43:11Smith scores his first run and both openers have taken singles off the first run and both openers have taken singles off the first over.
00:43:34Davidson completed the first over at medium pace and the good start develops in spectacular style as Frank Misson moves in on his long run.
00:43:51Smith plays a relaxed stroke and the ball soars high in the air to land in the grandstand for a magnificent six.
00:43:57Smith scores.
00:44:06This is a typical Cammy Smith opening and he and Conrad Hunt live up to their reputation of pre-scoring batsmen.
00:44:12There's a quick bowling change and spinner Bobby Simpson comes on.
00:44:34Smith carries on in fine style with his cavalier knock.
00:44:37Smith scores.
00:44:41SmithER
00:44:59Perez
00:45:06Smith races to 37 with a big crowd cheering him on.
00:45:21The West Indians have almost caught up with the Australian score
00:45:23when they pass 50 in the first hour of batting.
00:45:33Alan Davidson takes the first wicket for the Australians
00:45:35when this ball traps Cammie Smith right in front
00:45:38and he's out leg before wicket for 37.
00:45:45The first wicket has fallen for 54
00:45:48and Can High is the new batsman.
00:46:00Simpson is the bowler
00:46:01and Hunt continues a bright period of forceful batting.
00:46:05An hour before stumps, the West Indians passed the Australian score.
00:46:20Benno is bowling to Hunt in the late afternoon session of the third day's play.
00:46:38The West Indians, with one wicket down, are batting in their second innings
00:46:42and as a result of this single, they are 39 runs ahead with nine wickets in hand.
00:46:47Rowan Can High faces the next ball and a rank-long hop is crashed to mid-wicket
00:46:58where Misson has taken a great catch.
00:47:00Can High dismissed for 31 off a loose ball
00:47:03and the West Indians have lost their second wicket.
00:47:05There's a change in the batting order
00:47:07and Benno bowls now to Joe Solomon.
00:47:10Solomon and Hunt added 23 runs before stumps on the third day.
00:47:13Alan Davidson will open the bowling on the fourth day.
00:47:20Hunt drives and it's a good start to what should prove an eventful day's cricket.
00:47:24The ball beats the fieldman to the fence and Hunt has reached his 50.
00:47:38The boundary hit is not in character with the mood of the play.
00:47:41The result of the match and the series hinges on the success or failure of the batsman.
00:47:46Gone are the flashing drives of Conrad Hunt
00:47:48as he concentrates on building a big score on sound batting lines.
00:47:57For 15 minutes, the Australians bring scoring to a standstill.
00:48:00Then Davidson comes on again to bowl the fifth over of the morning.
00:48:04He's maintained a consistent off-stump attack
00:48:06and this time Hunt falls when he snicks a catch to the waiting hands of Grout.
00:48:10Hunt outs for 52
00:48:18and the remarkable combination of Davidson and Grout
00:48:21has taken another test match wicket.
00:48:23This is their 12th in this series alone
00:48:25and they win warm applause for their performance
00:48:28and so too does Hunt for his long, patient inning.
00:48:34West Indies are 71 runs ahead
00:48:36and Davidson is bowling to the new batsman, Garfield Sobers.
00:48:40Sobers gets his first run
00:48:48and the limping Davidson bowls again.
00:48:51Solomon, who manages to stay in the background for most of the time,
00:48:54plays a good shot to show that he's still there
00:48:56and still batting well.
00:48:58In contrast to the flamboyance of many of his teammates,
00:49:01Solomon is almost reserved and retiring in his approach to cricket.
00:49:10Richie Benno takes over and Garfield Sobers takes a single.
00:49:14Runs are coming slowly
00:49:15and only 20-odd have been scored in 40 minutes of batting time.
00:49:19This is right out of character
00:49:20but patient Joe Solomon is the right man for this type of game.
00:49:24This is one of the rare forcing shots in a morning of stubborn batting and tight bowling.
00:49:37Neither side is prepared to try anything risky
00:49:39and as a result, the play lacks the appeal and excitement of the previous days.
00:49:43However, the closeness of the struggle
00:49:45is sufficient to maintain the interest of the spectators.
00:49:47On comes Davidson for a new over
00:49:50in which runs come along at a steady rate.
00:49:52There's great interest in the form of Benno
00:50:18and his ability to spin the ball on the ageing pitch.
00:50:21Sobers has plenty of time to play this one
00:50:23which indicates that the pitch is still playing truly.
00:50:27The Australians make a fielding error
00:50:28and the overthrow is welcomed by the batsmen
00:50:30who are sliding the run.
00:50:40Things brighten up in this over
00:50:42as a series of scoring strokes
00:50:44and the tension eases after an hour of door batting.
00:50:51Benno appears to be trying to cut down runs
00:51:04and it's no surprise to the experts
00:51:06when Ken Mackay is brought on
00:51:07to bowl his accurate medium paces.
00:51:09If this move is designed to restrict scoring
00:51:11then Sobers fails to comply
00:51:13and runs come freely off the bat
00:51:15of the great left-hander.
00:51:37Solomon is wrapped on the pads
00:51:38and a loud and confident appeal is ruled not out.
00:51:42Solomon is still there
00:51:43but it was close.
00:51:47Simpson replaces Benno
00:51:48and Sobers is the batsman.
00:51:50Simpson dismissed Sobers in the first innings
00:51:52and he repeats the performance with this ball.
00:51:55Sobers edges a catch to Grouch
00:51:56and he's out for 21.
00:51:58West Indies 109 runs ahead
00:52:01and Alexander is the new batsman.
00:52:06This is an ideal situation
00:52:08for the batting wicketkeeper.
00:52:10Time and again he's played a fine innings
00:52:12when the batting structure has crumbled.
00:52:20Alexander takes three runs
00:52:21and Solomon faces Benno.
00:52:23Again there's an appeal for a leg before wicket
00:52:25but it's ruled not out.
00:52:27This is a crucial stage
00:52:28and thousands want to see
00:52:30if Jerry Alexander can succeed again.
00:52:32A full-blooded drive
00:52:33is a positive way
00:52:34to welcome the spinners of Johnny Martin.
00:52:48Alexander has started the ball rolling
00:52:50in more ways than one.
00:52:52Solomon joins in
00:52:53to complete a trio of good scoring shots.
00:52:58Nine runs off the over
00:53:07is a sudden change in scoring
00:53:08and a welcome change for the watchers.
00:53:11Back now to Benno
00:53:12and the hard-hitting Alexander.
00:53:13They take a third run
00:53:26and the score has reached 200.
00:53:33It's a different story
00:53:34when Solomon has the strike
00:53:35and the little right-hander
00:53:36is troubled by the spinning ball.
00:53:38Alan Davidson is brought back
00:53:48after a short rest
00:53:49and Solomon is beaten.
00:53:51Now the graphic picture
00:53:52of the possible turning point of the match.
00:53:54Davidson bowls
00:53:55and Solomon attempts a futile run.
00:54:04Solomon run out
00:54:05for the second time in the match
00:54:06due to a brilliant return
00:54:08from Norman O'Neill in the covers.
00:54:10The Australian fielding
00:54:11has been first class
00:54:12and the capturing
00:54:13of the vital wicket of Solomon
00:54:14could have a bearing
00:54:15on the result of the match.
00:54:21West Indies, five wickets down
00:54:23and Worrell has joined Alexander
00:54:24at the crease.
00:54:26Together, the captain
00:54:26and vice-captain
00:54:27attempt to regain control
00:54:29of the match
00:54:29by going for their shots.
00:54:43West Indians are nearly
00:54:45at the end
00:54:45of their batting resources
00:54:46and a heavy responsibility
00:54:47rests on Worrell and Alexander.
00:54:50At this stage,
00:54:51they have a lead
00:54:51of only 137 runs
00:54:53with five more wickets to fall.
00:54:56Worrell indicates his intentions
00:54:57by attacking the spin bowling.
00:54:59Benno is quick to realise
00:55:19the tactics of the West Indians
00:55:20and Davidson is given
00:55:22the new ball.
00:55:23Davidson comes in
00:55:31and Alexander meets
00:55:32the new ball
00:55:33in typical West Indian pattern.
00:55:34The end of the over
00:55:59and Worrell is now facing
00:56:01Frank Nissen.
00:56:02The batsmen are able
00:56:03to find gaps in the field
00:56:04and the scoring
00:56:05in the past 15 minutes
00:56:06has been the quickest
00:56:07of the day.
00:56:08Once more,
00:56:09Jerry Alexander
00:56:10has played a major role
00:56:11in the West Indies
00:56:12batting department.
00:56:22Wilson,
00:56:23stunned by the run scoring,
00:56:24retaliates
00:56:25with a sizzling bumper
00:56:26but Worrell is not at all concerned.
00:56:28It's an exciting period
00:56:29of play
00:56:30with the bowlers,
00:56:31batsmen and fieldsmen
00:56:32all trying as hard
00:56:33as they can.
00:56:34Alan Davidson adds another wicket
00:56:47to his great record
00:56:48with this ball.
00:56:50A fast out swinger
00:56:51is snicked by Worrell
00:56:52and Grout has taken another catch.
00:56:54Worrell made seven runs
00:56:55and both Grout and Davidson
00:56:57have figured in three dismissals
00:56:59in this inning.
00:57:00West Indies,
00:57:00154 runs ahead
00:57:02with Lashley,
00:57:03the new batsman.
00:57:11The Australians
00:57:12are in a very strong position
00:57:13and the new ball
00:57:14has taken its desired effects.
00:57:16The two batsmen
00:57:17of the wickets now
00:57:18are the last
00:57:19of the recognised players
00:57:20and only Gibbs,
00:57:21Hall and Valentine
00:57:22are to follow.
00:57:23Experts consider
00:57:24that the West Indians
00:57:25will need more than 250 runs
00:57:27to give them a chance
00:57:28of winning
00:57:29and this means
00:57:30that the remaining four batsmen
00:57:31will need to add
00:57:32at least another 100.
00:57:44Davidson has put up
00:57:45a sustained effort
00:57:46in spite of his injured leg.
00:57:48Although Lashley scores runs,
00:57:50no batsman has been
00:57:51really confident
00:57:52facing Davidson.
00:57:57Misson is relieved
00:57:58three overs
00:57:58after three overs
00:57:59with the new ball.
00:58:01Martin is brought back on
00:58:02and Lashley attacks
00:58:03his bowling.
00:58:09Next ball from Martin
00:58:10and Lashley is wrapped
00:58:11on the pads
00:58:12and he's given out.
00:58:13Leg before the kick
00:58:14for 18.
00:58:15is just under 200 runs ahead
00:58:40and Beno bowling to Alexander
00:58:42after Gibbs comes
00:58:43to the wickets.
00:59:10Gibbs survives his first ball
00:59:11from Beno.
00:59:12It's the end of the over
00:59:13and the sight board
00:59:14is moved for Martin
00:59:15to bowl around the wicket.
00:59:17Jerry Alexander
00:59:18is taking the strike
00:59:19and more runs
00:59:20come in this over.
00:59:41In a series of quick
00:59:56bowling changes
00:59:57Misson comes back on
00:59:58and Alexander and Gibbs
01:00:00continue their bright
01:00:01entertaining partnership.

01:00:46bowler is Davidson and Alexander is the batsman for 73 another grand inning this remarkable
01:01:00player has scored more than 50 in each of the five test men Paul comes in and Davidson bowls to Gibbs
01:01:16the whole and the West Indians have passed the 300 mark Bobby Simpson comes back with his leg spinners
01:01:33and the second ball of this over accounts for Gibbs he's out caught by O'Neill at slip and the
01:01:39ninth West Indian wicket has fallen is 240 runs ahead with Valentine the last batsman and this
01:01:52is the start of an entertaining and amusing tenth wicket stand

01:02:36Davidson bowls to Hall, and he's out, caught behind by Grout.
01:02:58West Indians are all out.
01:03:00Grout and Davidson have equaled record performances in this series.
01:03:04Hall opens the bowling for the West Indies, with Australia needing 258.
01:03:09Simpson reacts in sensational fashion.
01:03:34The West Indies
01:04:04runs off the over, and Australia has made a good start.
01:04:09West Indian captain Frank Worrell leads his team out on the field after lunch on the fifth day.
01:04:14These gay cricketers from the Calypso Islands have a serious job on their hands,
01:04:19because Australia, with eight wickets standing, needs only 104 runs to win the match and the series.
01:04:25The stage is set for an exciting climax, and Frank Worrell, playing in his last test match, is a dominating figure on the field.
01:04:37With skilful tactics, Worrell is making the Australians fight for every run, and keen students are impressed by his leadership.
01:04:44With accurate bowling, he succeeds in closing up one end, and both O'Neill and Simpson are forced into caution.
01:04:50After a series of maiden overs by both bowlers, off-spinard Lance Gibbs gives the West Indians great heart when Bobby Simpson is bowled.
01:05:03This was truly a fine knock by Simpson, and the feature of his 92 was his complete domination of Wesley Hall.
01:05:19Simpson leaves the arena with Australia still 104 runs behind.
01:05:23Peter Burge is the new batsman facing Lance Gibbs.
01:05:37An Australian victory is far from a certainty, because O'Neill has shown that the spin bowling is difficult to play.
01:05:43He's been floundering at times, and aggressive strokes like this one are a rare sight indeed.
01:05:48This is an outstanding display by the West Indians.
01:05:56When they arrived in Perth four months ago, the critics gave them little chance of success.
01:06:00But here they are at the end of their tour, making the mighty Australians fight hard for victory.
01:06:05Another single means that Australia wants 100 to win.
01:06:12Peter Burge looks confident from the start of his innings.
01:06:15He's yet to fail against the West Indians, and he's showing in the last two tests,
01:06:19making an almost certain selection for the Australian Tour of England.
01:06:23In this match, there is suspense in every over.
01:06:31Warhol is rewarded with the capture of O'Neill's wicket.
01:06:34Alexander took the catch, and the West Indians have increased their chances of victory.
01:06:38O'Neill, 48, and Australia, 82 runs behind.
01:06:51Warhol bowls to Neil Harvey, who's come in to join Peter Burge.
01:06:54He survives the last ball, and it's Gibbs starting a new over.
01:06:58Burge, with thoughtful batting, uses his feet to get to the pitch of the ball,
01:07:01and thereby nullify the spin.
01:07:08Burge is now the key figure in this close struggle for test-match victory.
01:07:12His confidence-stroking is a definite of the West Indians,
01:07:15and while he stays at the crease, Australia seems certain to get the runs required.
01:07:18Harvey goes next when he skies the ball to Smith in the covers,
01:07:29and again there's jubilation in the West Indian gap.
01:07:3558 to get, 5 wickets to fall, with Frank Worrell bowling to Alan Davidson.
01:07:40The interest of the cricketing world follows the fortunes in this match,
01:07:49and Burge, with some virile stroking, regains the initiative for Australia.
01:07:52Now the clash between the left-arm spinners of Worrell,
01:08:12and the left-hand batting of Davidson.
01:08:14It's a catch to Soberts, and the sixth Australian wicket has fallen.
01:08:1722 runs to win the match, Worrell bowls to Mackay.
01:08:30Every run is wildly cheered as the Australians draw closer and closer to victory.
01:09:00There's a great cheer for the West Indians when Valentine bowls Peter Burge for 53.
01:09:23Ten to make, and the match to win.
01:09:26Three wickets to fall, wild excitement.
01:09:28One run, Valentine bowls to grout, it's a single, nine now to win.
01:09:41The West Indians putting their heart and soul into the game.
01:09:44Every run is begrudged.
01:09:46Now the controversial incident, as grout plays a stroke, and sets off for the two runs.
01:10:02Alexander appeals to the umpire, because the wicket is broken.
01:10:05The bale is on the ground, and Alexander is certain that grout has been bowled.
01:10:15However, there's some doubt, and the umpires decide to hold a conference.
01:10:19They rule not out, to the amazement of the West Indians, and grout is still there.
01:10:24Valentine moves in, grout skies the ball, and Smith takes another catch.
01:10:36Australia, eight wickets down, two runs to get.
01:10:48Valentine to Martin.
01:10:49Martin skies the ball on the onside, they race through for a single, a catch is dropped,
01:11:00and the scores are tied.
01:11:02There's a wild scramble by the spectators.
01:11:04They're sent back, and play goes on, with Mackay facing Valentine.
01:11:12The winning run, Australia has won the fifth test, and the fifth.
01:11:16Well, it's time to show up.
01:11:42That's grout of all overcost, and it's really ohpire.
