When the body of Violet Feverel is discovered on the Central Park bridle path, Inspector Oscar Piper is about to declare her death accidental from a thrown horse, until his friend and amateur detective Hildegarde Withers locates the horse and discovers blood on the horse. The coroner deems it a murder when the cause of death is shown to be by a blunt instrument on the victim's head. The suspects include Violet's ex-husband, Don Gregg, who she jailed for nonpayment of alimony, but who was just released by a forged court order; Latigo Wells, the manager of Violet's stables and who had an argument with her that morning; and Eddie Fry, who had quarreled with Violet over his seeing her sister, Barbara Foley, and who was about to elope with Barbara. At Don's Long Island home, Hildegarde and Oscar meet his sickly father, Patrick, the caretaker, Chris Thomas, and his crippled son, Joey. After Patrick is murdered, Hildegarde snoops around and discovers clues which pinpoint the murderer, who is out to kill her.

00:02:07Sorry, you're deserting, Violet.
00:02:08It was a grand party.
00:02:10Bye.
00:02:10Glad you to come.
00:02:11Hey, Babs, you better hide down there so Violet won't see you.
00:02:28But, Eddie, do you think it's all right?
00:02:30Sure, it's all right.
00:02:31Go on, go on.
00:02:31Thanks for dropping me.
00:02:34We don't want to drop you.
00:02:35Why don't you come up to Harlem with us?
00:02:36No, thanks.
00:02:37I'm in the cavalry this morning.
00:02:38No.
00:02:39You got a cigarette?
00:02:41No, I haven't.
00:02:42Got a cigarette in there?
00:02:43Oh, Eddie.
00:02:44Why don't you kids shut up?
00:02:47Come on, Eddie.
00:02:47Come on, Eddie.
00:02:48Come on, Eddie.
00:02:50Come on, Eddie.
00:02:51Come on.
00:02:52I'm getting hungry.
00:02:54Got any extra cigarettes, Eddie?
00:02:55Sure.
00:02:56Here.
00:02:57And a light.
00:03:05Oh.
00:03:05Oh.
00:03:16Well, Chiveler, what do you mean by that?
00:03:18You know what I mean.
00:03:19I'll leave her alone.
00:03:19What have you got to be so about?
00:03:20Well, not a thing, Mr. Fry.
00:03:22And my own sister, too.
00:03:24We were going to tell you, but it was more fun sneaking around
00:03:26behind my back, wasn't it?
00:03:27I wouldn't talk about sneaking around behind people's backs.
00:03:29You seem to be doing pretty well with that stable boy of yours.
00:03:34Wait, Eddie, please.
00:03:36The pilot's on the rampage.
00:03:37Let's get out of here.
00:03:38Come on, Eddie.
00:03:39Let's take a walk until you cool down.
00:03:44You certainly have a fast right hand.
00:03:45I was going to help you, but.
00:03:46But you found out I could take care of myself.
00:03:49It's a good thing for you to remember.
00:03:51Was there anything special made by that crack?
00:03:55Have my horse saddled.
00:03:56High Pockets is saddling him now.
00:03:59Good morning, High Pockets.
00:04:00Good morning, Miss Farrell.
00:04:04Give me a leg up, High Pockets.
00:04:10Yes, ma'am.
00:04:10I'm riding alone this morning.
00:04:20And that's the way I'm doing everything,
00:04:22as far as you're concerned.
00:04:23But, Violet, why all this?
00:04:25You know why.
00:04:26So don't let's go into that again.
00:04:40If anybody wants me, tell them I'm going to breakfast.
00:04:44Yes, sir.
00:04:46This sure is going to be a bad morning.
00:04:49The sun will come up red.
00:04:50Everybody's acting more like snappin' turtles
00:04:52than the white folks.
00:04:53Yes, sir.
00:04:54Hey, I'm going to rent a horse.
00:04:55Boss is going to breakfast.
00:04:56He won't be back till after a while.
00:04:57I don't want the boss.
00:04:58I want to rent a horse.
00:04:59I don't want the boss.
00:05:00I want to rent a horse.
00:05:01We don't rent a horse.
00:05:02We don't rent a horse.
00:05:03We don't rent a horse.
00:05:04We don't rent a horse.
00:05:05We don't rent a horse.
00:05:06Yes, but you got to see the boss before you get a horse.
00:05:09We don't rent a horse.
00:05:10It's a stranger.
00:05:36No, no, no, no.
00:05:38Let's go.
00:06:08It's an accident, all right.
00:06:10I wonder what's keeping the inspector.
00:06:12Oh, here he is.
00:06:14Good morning, Inspector.
00:06:18Hello, Bart.
00:06:20Am I going to miss my breakfast again this morning?
00:06:22Not today, Inspector.
00:06:24She was thrown, and it looks like the horse kicked her.
00:06:26Hello, Doc. What do we got?
00:06:28Well, it looks like an accident.
00:06:30Apparently, the horse threw her and trampled her.
00:06:32But the hoof print is clear.
00:06:34Yeah, I guess you're right. No witnesses, huh?
00:06:36No, sir.
00:06:38All right, Doc.
00:06:40Okay, Father.
00:06:42Where's the horse?
00:06:43Must have run away.
00:06:44I guess that's all. You can make out the death certificate.
00:06:46I don't see why I always have to miss my breakfast for these accidents.
00:06:49I had an uncle who thought the World War was an accident.
00:06:52I don't see why I always have to miss my breakfast for these accidents.
00:06:55I had an uncle who thought the World War was an accident.
00:06:58It would be you.
00:07:00It's gotten so held to God,
00:07:02a person can't be killed within the city limits without your showing up.
00:07:04Where'd you get this horse?
00:07:06Mr. Jones and I were out walking.
00:07:08We found it, so we thought we'd look for the rider.
00:07:10Well, it's all right, see?
00:07:12There's nothing but an accident.
00:07:14I don't think so.
00:07:16Oh, got a theory, I suppose.
00:07:18Gonna try and tell me she committed suicide.
00:07:20Well, it's all right, see?
00:07:22Nothing but an accident.
00:07:24I don't think so.
00:07:25Oh, got a theory, I suppose.
00:07:27Don't try and tell me she committed suicide.
00:07:29Hey, Doc!
00:07:31You know Miss Withers, Dr. Bloom.
00:07:33How do you do?
00:07:34We met during the schoolhouse case,
00:07:36the one the press called murder on the Blackboard.
00:07:38You helped us a lot on that case.
00:07:40Thank you, Doctor.
00:07:41And I may help you on this one, too.
00:07:44Oh, Hildegard, don't start gumming things up.
00:07:47All right, Oscar, you run along to breakfast.
00:07:50But I'm gonna find out how this blood got on this horse by accident.
00:07:54Blood?
00:07:55What do you make of this, Doc?
00:07:57Well, I don't know.
00:07:59But there doesn't seem to be any wound.
00:08:01Oh, probably just scratched himself in one of these bushes.
00:08:03But there's no scratch.
00:08:05Durkin, get me my kit.
00:08:07I'm gonna do some probing.
00:08:25What's going on here?
00:08:39Accident.
00:08:40You ought to be on the police force.
00:08:42Oh, say, do you know where that horse belongs?
00:08:45Why, yes, that's Sywash with Thwaites Stable, 57th Street.
00:08:49Thanks.
00:08:50Well, can you beat that?
00:08:52Hey, Hildegard, come here.
00:08:54Look what we found.
00:08:55A BB shot.
00:08:56Somebody must have plugged him with an air rifle.
00:08:58By accident?
00:09:00You know, I know there was more in this than met the eye.
00:09:03In view of this inspector, I think I'd better make an autopsy.
00:09:07Yeah, that's right.
00:09:08Go ahead, Doc.
00:09:09The girl may have been dead before the horse kicked her.
00:09:13Hey, you boys, what do you got there?
00:09:15Offhand, I'd say, it was a bicycle.
00:09:18Don't handle it, you chump.
00:09:21Don't have it dusted for fingerprints.
00:09:24Now, Hildegard, we're getting somewhere.
00:09:26Hey, Sims, get on the phone and call all the stables in the neighborhood.
00:09:29See if you can find out which one this nag came from.
00:09:31It's from the Thwaites Stable on 57th Street.
00:09:34Huh?
00:09:37Well, what's going on?
00:09:38Why don't you get busy?
00:09:40Get on that horse and take this ankle chewing mud too.
00:09:44Yes, Mr. Sims.
00:09:45Take him to my apartment and you might feed him.
00:09:48I'm going to be with the inspector all day.
00:09:51Thwaites Stables on 57th.
00:09:53Well, where do you think you'll go?
00:09:55What are you always following me for?
00:09:57I don't know, Oscar.
00:09:58I guess it's because you bring out the mother in me.
00:10:00Oh.
00:10:03Go ahead.
00:10:08I can't rent no horses and no strangers.
00:10:11All right, all right.
00:10:12Never mind that.
00:10:13Come on.
00:10:14Open up.
00:10:15Oh, lords of the police.
00:10:16Yes, sir.
00:10:17Open it right up, sir.
00:10:18All right, Grady.
00:10:19Bring them in.
00:10:20What are y'all bringing back to Miss Federal's hospital?
00:10:21Federal, huh?
00:10:22Sounds like a phony name to me.
00:10:23Where does she live?
00:10:24I don't know.
00:10:25She don't live here.
00:10:26Well, we've cleared that up.
00:10:27She doesn't live here.
00:10:28Okay, Grady.
00:10:29But you better stick around.
00:10:30Okay.
00:10:31Who's in charge here?
00:10:32Mr. Wells is the manager, but he's out to breakfast.
00:10:33Out to breakfast, huh?
00:10:34How long has he been gone?
00:10:35About three quarters of an hour, maybe?
00:10:38No, it's not that long.
00:10:39About an hour or two, maybe.
00:10:40Okay, Hildegard, your witness.
00:10:41Where's he off?
00:10:42Where's he off?
00:10:43He's a phony name to me.
00:10:44Where does she live?
00:10:45I don't know.
00:10:46She don't live here.
00:10:47Well, we've cleared that up.
00:10:48She doesn't live here.
00:10:49Okay, Grady.
00:10:50But you better stick around.
00:10:51Okay.
00:10:52Who's in charge here?
00:10:53Mr. Wells is the manager, but he's out to breakfast.
00:10:55Out to breakfast, huh?
00:10:56How long has he been gone?
00:10:57About three quarters of an hour, maybe?
00:10:58No, it's not that long.
00:11:02Right over to your right.
00:11:23Rabbitfoot, I know this day is gonna be unlucky for somebody.
00:11:29You do, eh?
00:11:32Now look here, son.
00:11:34I know nothing.
00:11:35Oh, I'll take your word for that.
00:11:37Supposing you tell me your name?
00:11:39High pockets, ma'am.
00:11:41Oh, have it your own way.
00:11:43How long have you worked around here?
00:11:44About three months, ma'am.
00:11:46Not counting the week I was in jail.
00:11:49What were you doing in jail?
00:11:51Shooting crabs.
00:11:52No, I mean, what did they put you in jail for?
00:11:55Shooting crabs.
00:11:57Listen, high pockets.
00:11:58You saw a great deal of Miss Feveral, didn't you?
00:12:05Well, good morning.
00:12:09What can I do for you?
00:12:10You're the manager here?
00:12:12Yes, Wells is the name.
00:12:14Did you know, uh, Violet Feveral?
00:12:18Why, yes.
00:12:20She...
00:12:21Just back from breakfast, didn't you?
00:12:23Say, what is all this?
00:12:24Who are you, anyway?
00:12:25Inspector Piper, Homicide Squad.
00:12:27Come on, answer the question.
00:12:29Yes, I just got back from breakfast.
00:12:31Where'd you eat?
00:12:3259th and Madison.
00:12:34How long have you known Miss Feveral?
00:12:37Quite some time.
00:12:40Know her socially, away from the stables?
00:12:43Eh, sort of.
00:12:44I've had a date with her occasionally.
00:12:46Ever have any trouble with her?
00:12:48Certainly not.
00:12:49We were the best of friends.
00:12:50Oh, liked her a lot, huh?
00:12:52Matter of fact, you were a little bit in love with her, weren't you?
00:12:55Oh, I wouldn't say that.
00:12:57She was...
00:12:58Say, I don't see why you're asking me all these questions.
00:13:00You don't, huh?
00:13:01Well, Violet Feveral has been killed under very strange circumstances.
00:13:05Murdered.
00:13:06Murdered?
00:13:07While you were out at breakfast.
00:13:09Violet.
00:13:10What are you trying to do?
00:13:11Hang it on me?
00:13:12Oh, take it easy.
00:13:14Take it easy.
00:13:15Come on, sit down.
00:13:19I'm not hanging anything on you.
00:13:20I'm just trying to find out all I can.
00:13:22Well?
00:13:23Now, come on.
00:13:24Be good fellow.
00:13:25Tell me all you know.
00:13:26Don't you have any enemies that you know about?
00:13:29No, I don't think so.
00:13:31Wait a minute.
00:13:33This might be something.
00:13:35She had an argument with the guy outside the stable this morning,
00:13:38and she slapped his face.
00:13:39Slapped the guy's face?
00:13:40Now we're getting somewhere.
00:13:49You're a fine fellow, High Pocket.
00:13:50Yes, ma'am.
00:13:51I sure am.
00:13:52And I know I can trust you to keep quiet about all you've told me.
00:13:56Understand?
00:13:57Yes, ma'am, Miss Withers.
00:13:58And I'll keep quiet.
00:13:59I'll keep quiet all over.
00:14:02All over.
00:14:24Thanks very much, Wells.
00:14:25Oh, Hildegarden.
00:14:26I want you to meet Mr. Wells, the manager here.
00:14:28How do you do?
00:14:29How do you do, Mr. Wells?
00:14:30Is this the murderer?
00:14:33Mr. Wells has just given me some very valuable information.
00:14:37Well, isn't that nice?
00:14:39Then he's probably told you he had a fight with Miss Feveral this morning.
00:14:43No, he didn't say anything about that.
00:14:45Hey, wait a minute. I can explain.
00:14:46You're not going to explain.
00:14:47You're not going to explain down at headquarters.
00:14:48Grady!
00:14:49Take him downtown.
00:14:50Go ahead.
00:14:52You know, I thought that guy was holding something back.
00:14:55Nice work, Hildegard.
00:14:56Mm-hmm.
00:14:57Nice work if you can get it.
00:15:03How long has Miss Feveral lived here?
00:15:05About eight months.
00:15:06Anything else, Inspector?
00:15:08Yeah, in case he gets any phone calls while we're here,
00:15:11ride them through to me.
00:15:12Yes, sir.
00:15:13And don't be listening on the wire.
00:15:15No, sir.
00:15:18Well, what's been going on here?
00:15:26Get out of here!
00:15:28Come on, Eddie!
00:15:29Get out of here!
00:15:31Get out of here!
00:15:38A parrot!
00:15:39How do you like that?
00:15:40You certainly had it scared.
00:15:43Hey, look.
00:15:47Here's a picture of where that guy was.
00:15:48They must have been pretty friendly at that.
00:15:51Here's another young man.
00:15:52Wonder who he is.
00:15:54Listen.
00:16:04Just toss some things in the suitcase, perhaps.
00:16:05We'll have to hurry if we want to get away.
00:16:07I'll hurry, dear.
00:16:19All right, I'll take those.
00:16:21What is this?
00:16:22Come on, come on.
00:16:23You know, it is nice reading other people's mail.
00:16:25Come across with the letters.
00:16:26Who are you?
00:16:28Inspector Piper, Homicide Squad.
00:16:38It's about Miss Feverell.
00:16:40Violet, has something happened?
00:16:44She's dead, isn't she?
00:16:46How'd you know that?
00:16:49Why...
00:16:51I...
00:16:52I can see it in your faces.
00:16:56Oh.
00:16:57I'll take care of her.
00:16:58All right, what's your name?
00:16:59Edward Frey.
00:17:00Why were you two going in such a hurry just now?
00:17:01We were going to get married.
00:17:02Oh.
00:17:03Is that why you said we'd have to work fast if we want to get away?
00:17:04Well, we didn't want Violet to know about it till afterwards.
00:17:07You're going to marry him and you've only known a month?
00:17:08Not quite a month.
00:17:10You're rather impetuous, aren't you?
00:17:12But you didn't want her to find out about your marriage to her sister.
00:17:13Would have made trouble, huh?
00:17:15She always made trouble.
00:17:16She always made trouble.
00:17:18To her, you know?
00:17:19Well, but, you know, what did you want to come up?
00:17:20What did you want to come up with?
00:17:21What did you want?
00:17:22What did you want to do?
00:17:23Why did you want to make trouble?
00:17:25I'm so happy for her.
00:17:27Well, what did you want to make trouble?
00:17:28Oh.
00:17:29Aren't you?
00:17:32But you didn't want her to find out about your marriage
00:17:34to her sister.
00:17:34Might have made trouble, huh?
00:17:37She always made trouble for everybody.
00:17:41Did you ever have any trouble with her?
00:17:44Why, no.
00:17:46Then why'd she slap your face this morning?
00:17:50Thought I didn't know about that, huh?
00:17:51How long have you been here, living with Violet?
00:17:54About five months.
00:17:56I wasn't very welcome.
00:17:58I would have been terribly unhappy if it hadn't been for Eddie.
00:18:01Looks like you're in love with him.
00:18:03Yes, I am.
00:18:05So you didn't go to Harlem with the rest of the party, huh?
00:18:08No, we took a walk.
00:18:10Oh, you took a walk.
00:18:12Then we had breakfast.
00:18:14So you had breakfast?
00:18:15Well, it looks like everybody had breakfast
00:18:17this morning but me.
00:18:19Where'd you walk, in the park?
00:18:20No, we just walked and talked.
00:18:24Then we decided to elope.
00:18:26Tell me, Barbara.
00:18:28Is there anybody who had any reason for hating your sister?
00:18:35Who is it?
00:18:37Oh, it couldn't be.
00:18:40Who is it?
00:18:41Don.
00:18:46Don couldn't have done it.
00:18:48She divorced him, but he couldn't have.
00:18:49Don who?
00:18:50Don Gregg.
00:18:55Don Gregg.
00:18:57Don Gregg.
00:18:59Ex-husband.
00:19:02You stay right here, Barbara.
00:19:20I don't know.
00:19:28You stay right here.
00:19:28Oh, yeah.
00:19:29Hey, Fry.
00:19:32Come here.
00:19:34Say, why don't you tell me about Gregg?
00:19:37Gregg?
00:19:37Yeah, Don Gregg.
00:19:39Violet Feverell's ex-husband.
00:19:40He's probably going to sit there.
00:19:42Henry's in love with you.
00:19:43Why?
00:19:44Say, why don't you tell me about Greg?
00:19:47Greg?
00:19:48Yeah, Don Greg, Violet Feverell's ex-husband.
00:19:50What do you know about him?
00:19:51Nothing. Nothing much.
00:19:53She got rid of him about six months ago.
00:19:55Was he in love with her?
00:19:56Naturally, Oscar, if he married her.
00:19:58Uh...
00:19:59Was he in love with her?
00:20:00I suppose so.
00:20:01She took everything he had and jammed him up on his alimony.
00:20:04Oh, she did.
00:20:05Well, why don't you tell me about this before?
00:20:06I didn't think it was important.
00:20:08Oh, you didn't think it was important.
00:20:10Well, suppose you leave it to me to think what's important.
00:20:12Ex-husband. Alimony trouble.
00:20:16Uh-huh.
00:20:17He was in love with her and she's dead.
00:20:19Hildegard, this may be what the French call a crime of passion.
00:20:23Oscar, don't you think we ought to try and keep this case clean?
00:20:30What do you know about Don Greg?
00:20:32Don? Oh, I'm sure he's innocent.
00:20:35Oh, you're sure he's innocent, huh?
00:20:37Well, I know he is.
00:20:39How do you know?
00:20:40Because when he didn't pay his alimony, Violet had him thrown in jail.
00:20:43What?
00:20:44And he's still there.
00:20:47Oh.
00:20:48So the murderer was in jail at the time of the murder.
00:20:52Oh, he...
00:20:53Won't you tell me about this before?
00:20:55Well, if this was a crime of passion, Oscar, it was pretty darn platonic.
00:20:59All right, all right, all right.
00:21:01Miss Beverly.
00:21:11Miss Beverly.
00:21:12Miss Beverly.
00:21:14Miss Beverly.
00:21:15What is it?
00:21:16Please tell Miss Violet that her father-in-law wants to see her right away.
00:21:18Tell her to hurry or it may be too late.
00:21:19Why will it be too late?
00:21:20Excuse me, I...
00:21:21I didn't know.
00:21:22What did you know?
00:21:23That Miss Beverly had guests.
00:21:24Come in.
00:21:25Who are you?
00:21:26Chris Thomas.
00:21:27I'm working for Mr. Patrick Greig.
00:21:28Miss Beverly's father-in-law.
00:21:29If you just tell Miss Beverly.
00:21:30My sister is dead.
00:21:31She was killed this morning.
00:21:32Killed?
00:21:33Wow.
00:21:34Why, it can't be.
00:21:35She was murdered.
00:21:36But nobody would want to murder her.
00:21:37No one would want to murder her.
00:21:38No one would want to murder her.
00:21:39Excuse me, I...
00:21:40Excuse me, I...
00:21:41I didn't know.
00:21:42What did you know?
00:21:43That Miss Beverly had guests.
00:21:44Come in.
00:21:45Who are you?
00:21:46Chris Thomas.
00:21:47I'm working for Mr. Patrick Greig, Miss Beverly's father-in-law.
00:21:49Killed?
00:21:51Wow.
00:21:52Why, it can't be.
00:21:53She was murdered.
00:21:54But nobody would want to murder her.
00:21:57It's old Mr. Greig thereafter.
00:22:00What makes you say that?
00:22:02Well, uh...
00:22:03Yesterday, somebody poisoned old Rex, his dog.
00:22:08And Mr. Greig is afraid he'll be next.
00:22:11Where does Mr. Greig live?
00:22:13Long Island, ma'am.
00:22:15I've got to be getting back now.
00:22:17Just a minute.
00:22:18We'll go with you.
00:22:19Why not be a bad idea?
00:22:21But I don't see what a dead dog in Long Island's got to do with a girl murdered in Central Park.
00:22:26The dog belonged to the girl's father-in-law, and he's afraid of his life.
00:22:30Now, you don't want another murder on your hands, do you?
00:22:33Okay, but I still think it's a snipe hunt.
00:22:36Excuse me.
00:22:37Are you the police?
00:22:39He's on to, Oscar.
00:22:42Better give yourself up.
00:22:44All right, go ahead.
00:22:47I'm not through with you two yet.
00:22:52Take my advice.
00:22:53Don't try to leave town.
00:22:56Well, this is a nice, cheery place.
00:22:59It's just dying to be haunted.
00:23:01Yeah, and about all we'd find in there is mothballs.
00:23:05Well, what's the matter?
00:23:06Why don't somebody open up?
00:23:10Have we done any housebreaking?
00:23:11A housebroke a Pekingese once.
00:23:13I don't know.
00:23:14I don't know.
00:23:15What's the matter?
00:23:16Why don't somebody open up?
00:23:17Have we done any housebreaking?
00:23:18A housebroke a Pekingese once.
00:23:22Joey, show the lady and gentleman in the back parlor.
00:23:25I don't know.
00:23:26I don't know.
00:23:27I don't know.
00:23:28I don't know.
00:23:29I don't know.
00:23:30What's the matter?
00:23:31Why don't somebody open up?
00:23:32How did you ever do any housebreaking?
00:23:33A housebroke a Pekingese once.
00:23:38Joey, show the lady and gentleman in the back parlor.
00:23:43I'll tell Mr. Gregg you're here, sir.
00:23:57You. You can wait in here.
00:24:22This place would be great for an embalmer's convention.
00:24:24Joey! Joey! Come up here, quick!
00:24:32What's the trouble up there?
00:24:37Mr. Gregg!
00:24:40He doesn't answer. The door's locked from the inside.
00:24:43Oh, we should fix that. Get out of the way.
00:24:54He's breathing. Open the window. Get the doctor.
00:24:59Joey, the window.
00:25:01Don't look like there's anything we can do until the doctor comes.
00:25:10Looks like a stroke to me.
00:25:12Yeah?
00:25:13Look, he has a big bump behind the ear. How do you suppose that happened?
00:25:16Oh, probably fell and hit his head when he had the attack.
00:25:20And then climb back in bed?
00:25:24Yeah, that's right.
00:25:25That's right.
00:25:38Dr. Peters is on his way over. He just lives down the road.
00:25:42Poor Mr. Gregg.
00:25:43Poor Mr. Gregg.
00:25:47Oh, I'll do that, ma'am.
00:25:50He has a bad heart.
00:25:52The doctor told him that any excitement was likely to be fatal.
00:25:56He had his light attack not long ago.
00:25:58What caused the excitement that time?
00:26:00Horse racing, sir.
00:26:02Mr. Gregg has been a horseman all his life.
00:26:04Oh, if you'll excuse me, that must be the doctor.
00:26:07Are you sure you've never been married?
00:26:23If you're trying to be funny, there's a time and place for everything.
00:26:27What do you mean, trying to be funny? I can...
00:26:30Say, look at this.
00:26:32Received a Pat Gregg $900 for back alimony due Violet Feverell.
00:26:38I knew Don Gregg was the one.
00:26:41Quiet, Dr. Peters.
00:26:48Hot water and some towels, please.
00:26:54What is it, Doc? Stroke?
00:26:56I warned him.
00:26:58About what?
00:26:59He has a very bad heart.
00:27:02Thomas told me that you're the police and that Miss Feverell is dead.
00:27:06Murdered.
00:27:08I'm not surprised.
00:27:10She was an evil woman.
00:27:12She certainly was the most popular girl in her class.
00:27:17Oh, don't mind me. I'll just look around.
00:27:29The man's an astronomer.
00:27:41My error. Not stars. Horses.
00:27:59To be honest.
00:28:02That's a pretty good point.
00:28:03No reason.
00:28:05No reason.
00:28:07It's the good point.
00:28:09Is that she's going to get the food?
00:28:12I saw the food.
00:28:14I saw the food.
00:28:16There's something in the food.
00:28:19I saw that.
00:28:21I know that you're not even though.
00:28:23I thought I was a good point.
00:28:24Doc says he'll pull through all right.
00:28:37Well, he'll recover all right, but I don't understand it.
00:28:40Somehow the hand of death must have slipped.
00:28:43Doctor, could Pat Gregg have gone into town,
00:28:46killed his daughter-in-law, then come back here?
00:28:49Impossible.
00:28:50His heart couldn't have stood the excitement.
00:28:52Excuse me.
00:28:54How do you like that?
00:28:57Could Pat Gregg have killed his daughter-in-law?
00:29:00This alimony receipt proves that Don Gregg was out of jail.
00:29:03I don't care what you say.
00:29:05There's something phony going on here.
00:29:07Okay.
00:29:08Okay.
00:29:08Okay.
00:30:08What's that?
00:30:09I said, fake her.
00:30:11When you pretend to be asleep, why don't you breathe regularly?
00:30:16When did you come to?
00:30:18While the doctor was here.
00:30:21He told me you were police.
00:30:24And about Violet.
00:30:26Must have been quite a shock.
00:30:29Pleasant shock.
00:30:30She was no good.
00:30:34Horse kicker.
00:30:36She was murdered.
00:30:42Murdered?
00:30:45When did it happen?
00:30:47Early this morning.
00:30:49Why?
00:30:56I was just wondering.
00:31:02Were you alone when you had this attack?
00:31:05Was that?
00:31:06Oh, I suppose so.
00:31:11I can't remember.
00:31:14But I had a funny dream.
00:31:16I dreamed I was a pendulum in the clock.
00:31:26Well, pleasant dreams.
00:31:39I see.
00:31:40I see.
00:31:40So that's how it was, huh?
00:31:41Well, now, Thomas, come on.
00:31:44Just between you and me.
00:31:52The late Mrs. Don Gregg, otherwise Violet Favrelle, wasn't very popular around here, was she?
00:31:57No, sir.
00:31:58She was not.
00:31:59If I may say so, she was a troublemaker.
00:32:02And Mr. Pete Gregg disapproved of her violently.
00:32:06And, uh, so did Mr. Don after a while.
00:32:11He did, huh?
00:32:15Why'd you lie to me?
00:32:16Sir?
00:32:17Why'd you tell me Don Gregg was still in jail when you know he was released two weeks ago?
00:32:21Well, but he wasn't released, sir.
00:32:23Here's the alimony receipt.
00:32:24It's paid.
00:32:25Uh, well, you see, Mr. Gregg paid only the alimony due at the time Mr. Don was arrested.
00:32:30Not the amount that had accrued while he was locked up.
00:32:33Are you trying to tell me that Don Gregg was kept in jail after this $900 was paid?
00:32:37Yes, sir.
00:32:39Well, I'm a speckled ape.
00:32:41This is no time for a confession, Oscar.
00:32:44I don't believe it.
00:32:45Don Gregg's the guy.
00:32:46The dame was a rat and he knocked her off.
00:32:48I'm going to check on your story, mister.
00:32:50Where's your phone?
00:32:51Just outside in the hall, sir.
00:32:53Oh, uh, tell me, Thomas, what kind of a pipe do you smoke?
00:33:03Uh, corncob, ma'am.
00:33:04I paid 20 cents for it and I smoked it for 20 years.
00:33:08Really?
00:33:09Listen, you got a guy down there named Don Gregg?
00:33:14You what?
00:33:15You did, eh?
00:33:22Who's this talking?
00:33:25Oh, Warden Mahoney.
00:33:28Oh, Warden Sylvester Mahoney.
00:33:32Well, listen, Mr. Warden Sylvester Mahoney.
00:33:35I want you to be at my office in a half an hour and bring all the records of the case with you.
00:33:39Yeah.
00:33:43Don Gregg was sprung out of the alimony jail last night a few hours before the murder.
00:33:48Who let him out?
00:33:49I don't know, but I'm going to find out right now.
00:33:54In jail, huh?
00:33:58Looks like I hit a bullseye.
00:34:00It hurts me, Oscar, but I think you've got something.
00:34:02Stick around.
00:34:03You'll see an arrest in 24 hours.
00:34:05Scotland Yard calls, tell them we're not in.
00:34:20So, this is the court order that sprung Master Don Gregg, huh?
00:34:27I suppose you've noticed, Mr. Sylvester Mahoney,
00:34:31that the seal is a phony,
00:34:33and that the order is a forgery.
00:34:37Dear me.
00:34:39But, Inspector, how was I to know?
00:34:41How was you to know?
00:34:43How was you to know?
00:34:45Do you know what city this is?
00:34:47Do you know what the date is?
00:34:49I...
00:34:49I think it's the 7th.
00:34:51You think it's the 7th, huh?
00:34:53Well, it ain't it.
00:34:54It's the 9th.
00:34:57My mistake.
00:34:59Here was a guy who might have been a murderer,
00:35:01and you spring him out of jail.
00:35:02Well, he couldn't have murdered anybody while he was in jail, could he?
00:35:07No.
00:35:08And if he'd have kept him in jail, I wouldn't be hunting for him now.
00:35:12Well, uh, it's all very confusing.
00:35:16But, uh, you see, Inspector,
00:35:18one of the boys had a birthday,
00:35:20and a friend of his sent him some,
00:35:22well, some bottles for a little celebration.
00:35:27Birthday?
00:35:29Whose birthday?
00:35:31Why, Mr. Gregg himself.
00:35:34So, Mr. Gregg himself had a birthday, huh?
00:35:37Yes, sir.
00:35:41I'm sure that couldn't be helped.
00:35:43Shut up!
00:35:44Get out of here!
00:35:45Get up, Mr. Sylvester Mahoney,
00:35:46before I'm looking for me self-ful murder!
00:35:49Kay!
00:35:49Come in here!
00:35:50Kay, come in!
00:35:52Did you call Inspector?
00:35:53Did I call Inspector?
00:35:54What'd you think I was doing, sickin'?
00:35:56Send out a general alarm for Don Gregg.
00:35:58Yes, sir.
00:35:59What are we wanting for?
00:36:01The murder of Violet Feverell.
00:36:02The murder of Violet Feverell.
00:36:32Don't shoot!
00:36:37I'm Don Gregg.
00:36:39Who are you?
00:36:40Barbara.
00:36:41Violet's sister.
00:36:43I...
00:36:43I thought you were in jail.
00:36:45Yes, I was.
00:36:47I got out last night.
00:36:49Last night?
00:36:51Oh!
00:36:52What's the matter?
00:36:56What are you going to do?
00:36:57Stay where you are.
00:36:59I'm going to call the police.
00:37:12I...
00:37:12X-ray, read all about it!
00:37:42Come on, Louise!
00:37:54But why did you come here?
00:37:56I wanted to see Violet. I didn't know she was dead.
00:38:03Don't answer it. Maybe they'll go away.
00:38:12Phone ringing
00:38:31Hello.
00:38:35I hope I'm not disturbing you.
00:38:38I just dropped in to ask a few more questions about your sister.
00:38:43I've told you everything I know. Really, I have.
00:38:48Do you smoke?
00:38:49Yes, a little bit.
00:38:52But not a pipe, I hope.
00:38:53Oh, that. Well, that belongs to...
00:38:55To the man hiding in the other room.
00:38:57Come out, young man.
00:39:05This is Miss Withers, from the police.
00:39:12Don't you think it's kind of silly for you to come here?
00:39:17I came to see Violet. I didn't know she was dead.
00:39:22Don't lie to me.
00:39:23I'm not lying to you.
00:39:24What did you do after you got out of jail last night?
00:39:25Why...
00:39:26I went to a Turkish bath.
00:39:28Then what did you do?
00:39:29Well, I slept there.
00:39:30Then this morning I came here.
00:39:31All right, if that's the truth.
00:39:32Come on down to headquarters and tell your story to the police.
00:39:33And get thrown back in jail?
00:39:34I should say not.
00:39:35I think you'd better go, Don.
00:39:36If you're innocent, you have nothing to worry about.
00:39:37And besides, I have a great deal of influence with Inspector Piper.
00:39:40We roomed together at college.
00:39:41Taxis.
00:39:42I'm sure it's going to be all right.
00:39:43Now, don't worry. Leave everything to me.
00:39:44Taxis.
00:39:45Oh, no.
00:39:46Oh, no.
00:39:47That's not the truth.
00:39:48That's the truth.
00:39:49Come on down to headquarters and tell your story to the police.
00:39:50And get thrown back in jail?
00:39:51I should say not.
00:39:52I think you'd better go, Don.
00:39:53If you're innocent, you have nothing to worry about.
00:39:54And besides, I have a great deal of influence with Inspector Piper.
00:39:56We roomed together at college.
00:39:58Taxis.
00:40:00I'm sure it's going to be all right.
00:40:02Now, don't worry. Leave everything to me.
00:40:03Taxis.
00:40:04I'm sure it's going to be all right.
00:40:05Now, don't worry. Leave everything to me.
00:40:06Taxis.
00:40:12Well, where do you think you're going?
00:40:14And what do you think you're doing?
00:40:15I'm arresting the both of you in the name of the law.
00:40:17But, uh... but you can't.
00:40:19I'm a friend of the Inspector's.
00:40:21I'll show you.
00:40:25Here. What you got?
00:40:26A rod.
00:40:28Well, you never can tell.
00:40:29I was looking for my courtesy badge.
00:40:30I was looking for my courtesy badge.
00:40:32What badge?
00:40:33The one the inspector gave me.
00:40:34Let me see it.
00:40:35Just a minute.
00:40:42I must have left it at home.
00:40:43Oh, sure. On the bureau.
00:40:45Right beside the permit to this.
00:40:47Call the wagon, Jim.
00:40:48Okay.
00:40:50Go on, get going.
00:40:52Go on, get in there.
00:40:53But you can't do this to me!
00:40:54No, I can't, eh?
00:40:56Well, it's done, ain't it?
00:41:00Well, what's on your mind?
00:41:04It's Greg.
00:41:05I knocked him right outside the hotel.
00:41:07They're him and the dame.
00:41:09Nice work.
00:41:11Bring him in.
00:41:15Come on, you.
00:41:26Holy God!
00:41:30Cade, you ought to be promoted with this!
00:41:36You're as funny as a cry for help.
00:41:39All right, Cade, take the cuffs off.
00:41:44Why, Miss Withers...
00:41:45I was afraid we were going to have to get married.
00:41:50I told Mr. Gregg that you'd just ask him a few questions and let him go.
00:41:53Oh, so I'm just gonna ask him a couple of questions and then let him go?
00:41:55Mm-hmm. I think you will when you hear the answers.
00:41:57So he's got an alibi, huh?
00:42:00The only evidence you have is a baby shot in a horse.
00:42:01You can't hold him on that.
00:42:02I can't, huh?
00:42:04I'm gonna ask him some questions and it'll knock his hat off.
00:42:07Better hold on to your hat, Mr. Gregg.
00:42:09Sit down, Gregg.
00:42:10Sit down, Hildegard.
00:42:11No, thank you.
00:42:12I'm afraid you might start questioning me.
00:42:17All right, Cade.
00:42:19Greg, what's up here?
00:42:21What's up here?
00:42:22What's up here?
00:42:23All right, Cade.
00:42:26Greg, we know you were released last night on a forged court order.
00:42:29How'd you do it?
00:42:30On a forged what?
00:42:31Oh, come on, Greg.
00:42:32We know the whole thing.
00:42:34We know that you were sprung from jail on a phony writ
00:42:36and that killed a woman that had you locked up.
00:42:38Now, you might as well come clean.
00:42:40Yeah, I got out of jail, yes, but I...
00:42:42Well, I spent the night in a Turkish bath.
00:42:45Yeah?
00:42:46What was the name of the baths?
00:42:50The Central Baths.
00:42:53Oh, Cade.
00:42:54Find out who the attendant was at the Central Baths last night
00:42:57and get him over here right away.
00:42:59Yes, sir.
00:43:00And don't bring back Hildegard Withers.
00:43:03Oh, no, sir.
00:43:08What's the matter?
00:43:09Lose something?
00:43:10Yeah, my pipe.
00:43:11It's gone.
00:43:12Somebody's picked my pockets.
00:43:13Now, who could have picked your pockets at police headquarters?
00:43:17Can you tell by examining a pipe what kind of a man might have smoked it?
00:43:20It's quite possible, madam.
00:43:22Pipes are always like the men who smoke them.
00:43:24Well, I'd like to find out all about the men who smoke these.
00:43:27It's very important.
00:43:29This is a very ordinary pipe.
00:43:31But this...
00:43:32This is interesting.
00:43:34It tells you all about the man who smoked it.
00:43:37Such a man would be of middle age.
00:43:39Probably a professor or a coach.
00:43:42A professor or a chemist.
00:43:45So you're the robber over at the Central Baths, are you?
00:43:47Yes, sir, I am.
00:43:48And a pretty good one, too.
00:43:49All right.
00:43:52Take a look at this man.
00:43:54Was he over at your Baths last night?
00:43:56Well, uh...
00:43:58I wouldn't know, sir.
00:43:59What?
00:44:01No, sir. I couldn't tell, sir.
00:44:02What do you mean, you couldn't tell?
00:44:04Well, a suit of clothes is just a suit of clothes to me, sir.
00:44:07Oh...
00:44:11I get it.
00:44:15Now, can you tell?
00:44:22Yes, sir.
00:44:23He was at the Baths last night.
00:44:24In fact, I rubbed him myself.
00:44:26You rubbed him yourself, huh?
00:44:27You sure?
00:44:28Yes, sir.
00:44:29All right, you can go.
00:44:31Thank you, sir.
00:44:34So far, your story's okay.
00:44:36I'm not gonna hold you.
00:44:38But don't try to leave town.
00:44:43Then why are the police yelping murder all over the place?
00:44:46Now, why do you say that?
00:44:47I tell you I'm in the clear.
00:44:48I've got an alibi.
00:44:49You're involved in a murder, and I hope the truth comes out.
00:44:52Even if you are, my son.
00:44:53And that's a fine attitude for you to...
00:44:55Master Dunn, you mustn't excite your father.
00:44:57The doctor said he'd get another attack if he wasn't kept quiet.
00:45:00Get out and stay out!
00:45:01I want no part of you!
00:45:08I'm sorry, Master Dunn.
00:45:09Oh, you think I could go to my own father?
00:45:11Oh, well, he never had much love for me anyway.
00:45:13I'm not so sure I have much love for him either.
00:45:16Never mind, Thomas. I'll get that.
00:45:23Hello?
00:45:25Yes, this is Don Gregg speaking.
00:45:26I'm a friend of Miss Foley's.
00:45:28She wants to see you as soon as possible.
00:45:30It's very important.
00:45:32Tell her I'll be there around noon.
00:45:34Okay.
00:45:47Thomas, get my car.
00:45:53Oscar, Don Gregg didn't do it.
00:46:06Don't be a sap. Of course he did it.
00:46:09How are you gonna prove it?
00:46:10Well...
00:46:12Exactly.
00:46:13Look, Oscar.
00:46:14The man who killed Violet Feverell was middle-aged.
00:46:16He was a thoughtful man, possibly a chemist or a professor.
00:46:19And he has false teeth.
00:46:21What's his name?
00:46:22I have the least idea.
00:46:24And where'd you get all the dope?
00:46:25Deduction, Oscar.
00:46:26Oh.
00:46:27How can you find out if a man has false teeth?
00:46:31That's easy.
00:46:32Get him mad enough to bite you.
00:46:36Oh, hello, Doc. Come on in.
00:46:42What do you got, Otassi report?
00:46:43Yes.
00:46:44But there's nothing new.
00:46:46The girl had been killed with a blow on the head.
00:46:49Well, that's certain.
00:46:50Well, that's certain.
00:46:51Okay.
00:46:54Oh, by the way, Doc.
00:46:55Miss Withers wants to know how she can find out if somebody has false teeth.
00:47:02It's quite a problem.
00:47:03Well, you can offer him an apple.
00:47:06If he bites, the teeth are his own.
00:47:09If not, not.
00:47:20Now, all we need is an apple.
00:47:24Oh, hello, Schultz.
00:47:25What do you got?
00:47:26What do you got?
00:47:30Now, the letter E in both specimens varies.
00:47:34However, there is a slight similarity between...
00:47:37Look, all I want to find out is that Greg forged that court order.
00:47:41Forged court order?
00:47:42Yeah.
00:47:43Your friend Greg got out of jail on a forged order.
00:47:45I forgot to tell you, you were so sure he was okay.
00:47:48Hm.
00:47:49I still am.
00:47:51Oh, you are, huh?
00:47:53Come on, Schultz.
00:47:55Did Greg forge that order?
00:47:57No, he didn't.
00:48:01He didn't?
00:48:03Are you sure?
00:48:04Mr. Schultz, do you think this might be the handwriting we're looking for?
00:48:07What's that?
00:48:09That's a specimen of Pat Greg's handwriting.
00:48:12I forgot to tell you about it.
00:48:13You were so sure he was okay.
00:48:15Pat Greg, how do you like that?
00:48:17Here's a, here's an old man...
00:48:18How about it, Mr. Schultz?
00:48:19Well, I can't be sure from a casual examination.
00:48:22I'd have to chart the handwriting.
00:48:24Go ahead, chart it.
00:48:25Yes, sir.
00:48:31Pat Greg.
00:48:33Next thing you'll be telling me...
00:48:34Homicide Squad, inspector speaking.
00:48:42What's that?
00:48:47Wait a minute.
00:48:48Who are you and what do you want?
00:48:53Now, don't start that again.
00:48:55I guess it's for you.
00:48:57Who is it?
00:48:58I don't know, but he's hissing like a snake.
00:49:02Hello.
00:49:05Oh, hello, High Pockets.
00:49:06How are you?
00:49:09What is it?
00:49:11What man?
00:49:13Yes, yes, you stay right there.
00:49:14I'll be right over.
00:49:15Who is it?
00:49:16We've got something.
00:49:17What?
00:49:18What man's he talking about?
00:49:19I'll tell you on the way over.
00:49:21This is something.
00:49:22That man's been finding something awful back there.
00:49:23He says he come here.
00:49:24He and that girl have been scraping at each other.
00:49:25I'm just scared to death.
00:49:26Y'all better go in there and do something.
00:49:27They go ahead or nothing.
00:49:28They've been finding and going on there.
00:49:29Now, listen.
00:49:30Now, listen.
00:49:31Now, listen, High Pockets.
00:49:32I've got a $10 bill in here.
00:49:33You just calm yourself and begin at the beginning.
00:49:34Yes, ma'am.
00:49:35I'm awful calm now.
00:49:36Come on.
00:49:37Come on.
00:49:38Come on.
00:49:39Tell me.
00:49:40It was yesterday morning.
00:49:41Make him tell you, Eddie.
00:49:42I'll tell you I don't know anything.
00:49:43Come on, Wells.
00:49:44I don't know anything.
00:49:45Listen, you rat.
00:49:46What did you do with that money?
00:49:47All right, all right.
00:49:48He's the one that did it, I tell you.
00:49:49He killed you.
00:49:50Oh, you're crazy.
00:49:51You're trying to hang it on me.
00:49:52Quiet.
00:49:53What are you doing here?
00:49:54Oh, frame him, huh?
00:49:55What are you coming over accusing him of murder for?
00:49:57Go on, Eddie, you'd better tell him.
00:49:58Come on, Eddie.
00:49:59You better tell him.
00:50:00Come on, Eddie.
00:50:01Come on.
00:50:02All right, Eddie.
00:50:03Come on.
00:50:04You better tell him.
00:50:05Come on.
00:50:06All right, Eddie.
00:50:07All right.
00:50:08You're just calm yourself and begin at the beginning.
00:50:10Yes, ma'am.
00:50:11I'm awful calm now.
00:50:12Come on.
00:50:13Come on.
00:50:14Come on.
00:50:15Come on.
00:50:16You see, Violet gave this fellow Wells $900.
00:50:19What?
00:50:20We found an entry in her diary.
00:50:23Gave Latigo $900 to bet on Wallaby.
00:50:26Why don't you tell me about this yesterday?
00:50:28Well, we didn't think it was important.
00:50:31Again, you didn't think it was important.
00:50:34Well, Mr. Wells, looks like you've got some explaining to do.
00:50:38You're a good boy, High Pockets, and I think you'll go far.
00:50:42Yes, ma'am.
00:50:43How far should I go?
00:50:46You're lying.
00:50:48She gave you money, and when she couldn't get it back, you killed her.
00:50:51I think we got him, Hildegard.
00:50:52Wait a minute.
00:50:53I want to tell you something.
00:51:02Yeah?
00:51:03Oh, Greg, where did you go when you left the Turkish bath the other night?
00:51:07Why, I had my breakfast, then I went to the hotel.
00:51:10What are you lying for?
00:51:12You tried to rent a horse to follow Violet Favreau.
00:51:14Why did you want to follow her?
00:51:17I'll take it.
00:51:18I'll tell them you're in conference.
00:51:23Now, you might as well spill it, Greg.
00:51:25A wrecked bicycle was found near the spot where the girl was killed.
00:51:28So what?
00:51:29That bicycle was stolen from across the street.
00:51:31And a little piece of cloth was caught in a sprocket wheel.
00:51:34Dark cloth.
00:51:35Say, wait a minute.
00:51:36When you couldn't ride a horse, you stole a bicycle.
00:51:38And you just happened to ride in the park where Violet Favreau...
00:51:40I tell you I don't know anything about it.
00:51:41Yeah?
00:51:42Then why'd you give me that song and dance about the Turkish baths?
00:51:43It was Mr. Schultz, the handwriting expert.
00:51:44What do you want?
00:51:45He says the forged note was in Pat Greg's handwriting.
00:51:46How do you like that?
00:51:47So your father forged a court order, huh?
00:51:48Now, Greg, maybe you'll talk.
00:51:49And maybe your father'll talk.
00:51:50I can't.
00:51:51Get another cop in headquarters.
00:51:52Take them all out to Greg home.
00:51:53All of them.
00:51:54Yes, sir.
00:51:55Come on, Hildegard.
00:51:56Come on, you two.
00:51:57Get going.
00:52:20Nobody home.
00:52:21If I lived in a place like this, I wouldn't stay home either.
00:52:23Well, the locked house never stopped me yet.
00:52:26If there's anybody in there, I'm going to sneak up on them.
00:52:50Come on.
00:53:20Come on.
00:53:33Stand still.
00:53:34I've got you covered.
00:53:35Relax, Hildegard.
00:53:37Relax.
00:53:46Place seems kind of empty.
00:53:47I wonder where everybody is.
00:53:48I don't know, but old man Greg's home.
00:53:50That's a cinch.
00:53:51Come on.
00:53:55Where'd you get in, anyway?
00:53:57The door wasn't locked.
00:54:09Empty.
00:54:10He's gone.
00:54:11Right again, Oscar.
00:54:12You suppose somebody could have tipped him off where we're coming?
00:54:15You know, that's possible.
00:54:17I have an idea where he might be.
00:54:19I have an idea where he might be.
00:54:47Lookin' at the races this afternoon.
00:54:48That's what did it.
00:54:49Doctor said he couldn't stand any excitement.
00:54:50He would have to pop off at a time like this.
00:54:51I'm not so sure he popped off.
00:54:52Hey, look.
00:54:53Hey, look.
00:54:54His ankles are chafed.
00:54:55You know, holy God, he might have been murdered at that.
00:54:59But how did he...
00:55:00I think I know how.
00:55:01Come on.
00:55:02Come on.
00:55:03Come on.
00:55:04You know.
00:55:05You know, what's going on?
00:55:06That's, that's how you keep it.
00:55:07You know.
00:55:08You know, all of a sudden, you've had to pop off at a time like this.
00:55:11You know, I'm not so sure he popped off.
00:55:13You know, what's going on?
00:55:14You know, holy God, he might have been murdered at that.
00:55:18But how did he...
00:55:20I think I know how.
00:55:22Come on.
00:55:37Look.
00:55:40It's been knotted the same as it was yesterday.
00:55:42Knotted.
00:55:46And his ankles are chafed.
00:55:48That might mean that somebody...
00:56:00Look.
00:56:02There's been something tight around there.
00:56:04He dreamt he was swinging like a pendulum.
00:56:14Oscar, somebody tried to kill Pat Gregg yesterday.
00:56:18He was hit in the back of the head and hung up there by his heels.
00:56:21Uh-huh.
00:56:23So it looked like he had a stroke.
00:56:25Whoever it was tried it yesterday, but something happened.
00:56:27So they came back today.
00:56:29Still, he was killed here, and yet his body's up in the turret room.
00:56:33Must have been carried there.
00:56:35So that it would look as if the excitement of the races killed him.
00:56:37Right.
00:56:39Oh, it's here, is it?
00:56:43Where have you been?
00:56:44Is anything wrong, sir?
00:56:45Never mind that.
00:56:46Where have you been?
00:56:47Mr. Greggs said I might go to the races, sir.
