00:00Oh my gosh.
00:04What is this?
00:12Hey, what's going on, everybody?
00:14For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans, and you're watching Hot Ones.
00:16It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
00:19And today we're joined by Anna de Armas.
00:20She's a Golden Globe and Oscar Award-nominated actress
00:23you know from films like Knives Out, Blonde, No Time to Die, and many more.
00:26Her latest project, though, is a starring role in the fifth film of the John Wick franchise.
00:30It's called From the World of John Wick, Ballerina,
00:32and it's set to release in theaters on June 6th.
00:34Anna de Armas, welcome to the show.
00:37How are you with spicy food before we get started?
00:39I'm not good at all.
00:41Like, I honestly, I knew this was happening,
00:44and I have been practicing a little bit, but not ready.
01:00Yeah, let's do it.
01:09Okay.
01:10Here we go.
01:15Well, this is good.
01:17Oh, I like it.
01:18I'm doing good.
01:20This is great.
01:21It's yummy.
01:28So, the John Wick franchise is iconic for its imaginative use of violence,
01:32and not to give too much away,
01:33but I particularly enjoyed the Icegate Massacre and the Flamethrower Duel.
01:38What are the creative conversations like in shaping a character like Eve's fighting style?
01:42Like, were there any interesting chats about how to tailor the signature John Wick choreography
01:47to the skills of a ballerina turned assassin?
01:49Yeah, I mean, I think we wanted to just keep pushing the humor in the franchise.
01:55You know, you watch the John Wick films,
01:57and sometimes the fights are really intense and gory,
02:00but it's the kind of action that you're just having so much fun with.
02:03Like, you put your fingers on your face, but you're looking through.
02:07You can't stop it.
02:08And also, like, adding the ballet element to it was really important.
02:13Like, I really wanted to, like, see her.
02:16She's a woman in the men's world,
02:18and I wanted to feel like every punch, every kick, everything was hurting.
02:24Like, I really wanted her to go through that pain.
02:27Kind of reminds me of the experience of doing Hot Ones, you know what I mean?
02:31Like, there's a certain pain that you just become familiar with.
02:34Yeah.
02:34You know what I mean?
02:35And that always allows you to push through,
02:36because you know, on the other side, you'll be fine.
02:38Yeah.
02:39All right, Ana, you're doing great.
02:41Okay.
02:41Are you ready to move on here to sauce number two?
02:44Number two.
02:45All right, so up next, we have Just Winging It.
02:49Okay.
03:00Hmm.
03:01Still good.
03:02Yeah.
03:02There we go.
03:05Good.
03:06So, recently, the Academy Awards announced a new category
03:10to recognize achievement in stunt design.
03:12Mm-hmm.
03:12If you were in charge of the criteria for that award,
03:15what do you think are, like, the most important things to focus on?
03:18Like, are there elements of best of the best Hollywood action sequences,
03:21in your opinion?
03:22I think, yes.
03:23I would say, like, feeling like it's a one, like, you know,
03:27like a one continuous shot.
03:28That would be cool.
03:30That's important to feel like you're in the moment.
03:33Um, so definitely not cuts.
03:36No cuts.
03:37No cuts.
03:38Um, I would say just being original,
03:42like, doing things that you haven't seen before,
03:44like, surprising people.
03:46What else?
03:47What am I missing?
03:48I, you know what?
03:48To me, you nailed it.
03:49That was you just pulling an arrow, hitting a bullseye.
03:51Right?
03:52Yep.
03:52Those two things.
03:53Yep.
03:54How are you doing so far?
03:55I'm good.
03:56I'm good.
03:57Whoa.
03:58I like that.
03:58Surprisingly good.
03:59From nervous to confident, I can see it already.
04:02It's not gonna go well.
04:08I'm ready.
04:12So, lately, we've been in the habit of asking actors
04:15about the scenes that they dreaded doing,
04:17from the second they read them in the script
04:19to when they saw it up on the call sheet scheduled.
04:22Yeah.
04:22What is it about the chaotic dinner scene in Eden,
04:25which I understand took three days to shoot,
04:27that made it one of the scariest things you've ever done?
04:32Singing.
04:34I hated it.
04:35I mean, I remember when I talked to Ron,
04:38and I was like,
04:39Ron, I really think I should lip sync.
04:41Like, this is not for me.
04:42And he just didn't want to hear.
04:44He was like, no, you're singing.
04:46You're singing.
04:46It's, you know, if you do it bad,
04:48it's good for the character.
04:49That's what I'm like.
04:50Yeah, but people don't know that.
04:51So, anyways, I just couldn't convince him
04:56to let me lip sync,
04:57so I had to learn the song.
05:01It was horrible.
05:02I was terrified.
05:03I would rather do a hundred stunts
05:05than singing that song.
05:07Yeah.
05:08It was terrifying.
05:10Because also in front of all the actors,
05:11and I just, I don't know,
05:12I just felt very exposed and vulnerable,
05:15and it's not one of my talents, for sure.
05:18Every time I'm so nervous.
05:30They're messy.
05:32They are messy.
05:33And then just be careful around the eyes, you know?
05:38Yeah, I definitely don't want this on my eyes.
05:40So, in the Spanish class SNL skit
05:43that you did with Marcelo Hernandez and Carol G,
05:45you rattle off a long list of Cuban foods,
05:47everything from Ropa Vieja to Duro Frio.
05:50If you were to put together
05:52your last meal on earth, Cuban style,
05:54what would that feast look like?
05:56Like, what are the dishes
05:57that are most nostalgic to you?
05:59Ooh.
06:00Cuban food is just comfort food for me,
06:02and it's very basic, you know?
06:04It's rice and beans.
06:06The black beans are my favorite.
06:09Definitely Ropa Vieja.
06:11The tostones.
06:13The picadillo is good, too.
06:15It's minced meat in tomato sauce
06:18and with olives and all that.
06:19It's, like, Cuban food is really well, like, condimented.
06:23It's not spicy.
06:24I was going to say, we're condimented over here.
06:26No, no, but not this kind of spice.
06:29It's spices, not spicy.
06:31So, it's just, oh my gosh, I love it.
06:35It's so, it's so yummy.
06:37What would you say distinguishes
06:38a great mojito from a mediocre one?
06:41I think it's the, the,
06:44how much sugar you put it?
06:45Like, it's a fine line between making it, like,
06:48way too sweet and, like, just the right amount,
06:51you know, like,
06:52and the rum is important.
06:54You have to.
06:55It's white rum, Havana 3.
06:57That's what it is.
06:58You can't put anything else in it.
06:59Rules to live by.
07:00Yes.
07:06Oh my God.
07:10I like the mustard.
07:12It's all right.
07:13You know, I'm kind of like you.
07:14I kind of like the more citrusy.
07:16Yeah.
07:17Hot sauces, you know,
07:18like a little, uh, fruit to undercut the heat.
07:21This one's pretty hearty, you know?
07:23Ooh.
07:25Yeah.
07:27Oh, Sean.
07:30I know.
07:31It's another level.
07:33But we're here.
07:34Yeah.
07:34We got this.
07:35I've been dealing lately with a lot of high fever.
07:38You know, allergies.
07:39Yeah.
07:39From spring.
07:40This kind of clears them out.
07:41I know.
07:42Where were they?
07:42What did I need them last week?
07:44I was really congested.
07:46And now I'm like, look at this.
07:47Yeah.
07:48Well, now, you know, you have this tool in the kit.
07:49Now I know.
07:50Should you ever need it again.
07:51All right.
07:51And we're giving you the sauces to go.
07:53So you'll have them now.
07:54Yeah.
07:54Your own medicine bag.
07:55Okay.
07:55Can you talk me through the level of detail that went in to putting together the scene
08:01in Knives Out where you puke on Chris Evans' face?
08:03Like, is it true that you and director Rian Johnson experimented with different kinds of
08:08baby food to see which projectile had, like, the longest shot in the air and what looked
08:13best on camera?
08:14Yes, it is true.
08:15We had to, you know, we had the props guys, like, having, like, different textures and
08:21mixes in different cups and we went outside the house while they were lighting the room
08:26and I was just with Rian out there and crazy.
08:29Pretty much everyone came out just to see.
08:32It was an event.
08:33Yeah, it was an event.
08:34And we needed, like, on Chris's face, like, really well.
08:37So we did one that had, like, was kind of chunky.
08:40Yeah, yeah.
08:41Little pieces of it in it.
08:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:43Real.
08:43Real to the form.
08:44You know, he's so handsome.
08:46We wanted to, like, really, yeah, mess with him.
08:54I feel good.
08:59Right, so.
09:00How are you feeling?
09:01I'm okay if you're okay.
09:03You know?
09:06But this one, to me, it's like, you know how we have this tropical one at number one that
09:10you're like, oh, it's so nice.
09:11This has that tropical vibe, but then it has that.
09:15I know.
09:16They'll take, like, a little minute to, like.
09:18Really come alive.
09:19Yeah.
09:20Yeah.
09:21So through your career so far, you've gained admiration and support from some true heavy hitters in Hollywood,
09:26from Robert De Niro to Daniel Craig to Keanu Reeves.
09:30What, if anything, have you learned from them about what it means to be number one on the call sheet,
09:34the way that they command a set when they have that distinction?
09:37You know, going to L.A. or going to Hollywood was never a plan for me.
09:43I moved to Spain and then from Spain to L.A., but it was just kind of happening naturally.
09:48I just never planned on it.
09:50And to be on set with them was always kind of like a pinch-me moment every time.
09:57And I've worked with, yeah, like you said, really, really amazing people.
10:02The project becomes the project because of the people in them and the way they collaborate and they lead by example.
10:10This one, right?
10:11Yeah, it's called apricot.
10:14Emphasis on the hot.
10:15Is that the one you were warning me about?
10:17No.
10:17No, not yet.
10:18That'll be the next one.
10:19But let's take our wins where we get them here, you know?
10:24Oh, I don't like this.
10:32What is it?
10:35It's almost like a spicy lemon to me when I bite into it.
10:38You know, like it has a citrus quality to it.
10:42But then it contends with that spice.
10:45Yeah, a little sour, a little spice.
10:47Yeah.
10:47Right.
10:48Puts us in that mode.
10:50So, when you're watching your own performance, is there a technical aspect that you're always critiquing of yourself or that you're trying to take to the next level?
11:01Like, when you watch yourself, when are you your own biggest critic?
11:05I hate watching myself, I have to say.
11:08What was the question?
11:09I'm curious, like, when you watch yourself, when are you your own biggest critic?
11:15So, yeah, that also, that goes all the way through to the end.
11:21So, I start seeing early cuts of the film.
11:24So, I've kind of, like, gotten better at watching myself and, like, trying to, like, separate myself from my performance alone and just look at the whole thing, the whole picture and what's good for the film sometimes.
11:39You know, it's not what selfishly you would want to do, you know, for yourself.
11:45I'm very perfectionist and I like things, you know, they can always be improved, they can always be better.
11:52Who's the one?
11:53Yeah.
11:53You know too much.
11:55This is the bomb beyond insanity.
12:02Okay.
12:03Okay.
12:06The bomb.
12:09It's called Beyond Insanity.
12:15Oh my God.
12:17Sean, this is bad.
12:18Yeah.
12:21I know.
12:22That look.
12:22I know that look.
12:24Who put me here?
12:25Who volunteered me for this?
12:27Oh my God.
12:28I know.
12:29I know.
12:34But this is as bad as it gets, okay?
12:36Well.
12:37So, I understand that in preparation for your role as Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, that you watched her filmography hundreds of times.
12:45Do you have a Mount Rushmore of Marilyn Monroe movies?
12:50Like four movies that you'd recommend to maybe people in the audience who only have a casual awareness of her career in acting?
12:56Oh my gosh.
13:00What is this?
13:01I know.
13:02It's, you know, just a habanero pepper that's concentrated.
13:06Oh no.
13:11I know.
13:15We could only laugh through the pain of it all.
13:21Robin, please help.
13:25Um, definitely, um, some lucky heart.
13:31It's a classic.
13:37Some lucky heart.
13:39It's really amazing.
13:41She's wonderful in it.
13:42I love the prince on the showgirl.
13:45She's so relaxed and you can see her, like, really enjoying that character.
13:50Niagara is another classic that I really loved.
13:53Janimal perfume blondes.
13:55Those are, that's a good one too.
13:56And then be careful, be careful.
13:57Yeah.
13:57It kind of, like, went away, you know?
14:01Yeah, yeah.
14:02But.
14:03But.
14:04The problem with this show is, you know, the storm clears, the clouds break, the sunshine comes in.
14:10And then more dark clouds start rolling in.
14:15What are you telling me?
14:16That there are two more to go.
14:19Oh my god, that was so bad.
14:22You can keep that one, I don't want it.
14:23I'm just numbed.
14:39This is good.
14:40You like it?
14:40No, I mean, it's good that I'm numb.
14:44It's good.
14:46Yeah, great.
14:47As someone who had a big acting career, both here and abroad, I'm curious,
14:50is there a difference between, like, a Spanish movie-going audience and American movie-going audience?
14:56Like, is there any difference in, like, what somebody who buys a movie ticket in Madrid is looking for versus someone in L.A.?
15:02The influence of American cinema in Europe is more, is stronger, I would say.
15:11And Europeans like European films, you know?
15:14Like, it's a kind of, like, um...
15:17Yeah.
15:18We cannot do that.
15:19Be careful.
15:20Um, no.
15:21Um, I think Europeans also, or Spanish people, have a pretty wide, um, spectrum of, of...
15:30They know about cinema.
15:31Right, right, right.
15:32You know?
15:32And they, they have, they have good taste, you know?
15:35Yeah.
15:37All right, Anna.
15:38This is it.
15:39This is it.
15:39This is it.
15:39This is it.
15:44You don't have to, if you don't want to.
15:48Ah!
15:49You can't say that to me.
15:52You can't say that to me.
15:55I love it.
15:59Okay.
16:01Oh, good thing you did that.
16:08Cheers, Anna.
16:09Look at you.
16:10All the way through.
16:11Oh, my God, I can't believe I'm doing this.
16:15Okay.
16:16All right, cheers.
16:17Cheers.
16:17Here we go.
16:18Here we go.
16:23And with that, Anna DeArmas, you have run the Hot Ones Gauntlet.
16:27And just one more question before we get you out of here.
16:30And you know, my favorite thing about watching the John Wick films is the use of practical,
16:35everyday objects in fight sequences.
16:38Yes.
16:38Looking around right now, if you were to storyboard out a combat scene, how might you use what's
16:44here in the studio to your advantage?
16:50Well, I would definitely get this bottle.
16:55Break it.
16:56And I think I would just, like, you know, make sure you're close to me, like, on the table.
17:03Mm-hmm.
17:04So I would just probably smash your head on the table, on top of the sauce and the glass.
17:09The shards of glass.
17:10Yeah.
17:10Well, you know what?
17:11That right there sounds like it's worth the price of admission.
17:15And look at you, Anna DeArmas, taking on the wings of death, living to tell the tale.
17:19And now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
17:22This camera, this camera, or this camera.
17:23Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
17:26What do I have what?
17:27If you have, like, a movie coming out or something.
17:29Oh, yes, I do.
17:31So, yeah, I have my movie Ballerina coming out on June 6th in theaters.
17:38Please watch it.
17:39You're going to like it.
17:41Yeah.
17:45Great job.
17:46Oh, my God.
17:48Oh, this is insane.
17:53My lawyer came all the way here just to see me.
17:57Just to see me.
17:59Yeah, to serve me.
18:00Going through it.
18:02I'm like, are you here to support me or to?
18:07Oh, my God.
18:13Hey, what's going on, Hot Ones fans?
18:15By now, you know the drill.
18:16If you'd like to taste the show at home, well, I've got good news for you.
18:20The Hot Ones Season 27 10-pack is now available.
18:25That's hotones.com, hotones.com, hotones.com to get your hands on this box right here.
18:32Ten sauces, one box, your doorstep.
18:35Be careful around the eyes.
18:36Be careful around the eyes.
18:36Be careful around the eyes.
18:36Be careful around the eyes.
18:37Be careful around the eyes.
18:38Be careful around the eyes.
18:38Be careful around the eyes.
18:39Be careful around the eyes.
18:39Be careful around the eyes.
18:40Be careful around the eyes.
18:40Be careful around the eyes.
18:41Be careful around the eyes.
18:41Be careful around the eyes.
18:42Be careful around the eyes.
18:42Be careful around the eyes.
18:42Be careful around the eyes.
18:43Be careful around the eyes.
18:43Be careful around the eyes.
18:44Be careful around the eyes.
18:44Be careful around the eyes.
18:45Be careful around the eyes.
18:46Be careful around the eyes.
18:47Be careful around the eyes.
18:48Be careful around the eyes.
18:49Be careful around the eyes.
