Khalil Yousuf, the former Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Farnham & Bordon, talks about why Britain isn't paying carers properly - and why change is needed.
Transcript
00:01At the heart of every compassionate society is how we treat those who care for our most vulnerable.
00:07Yet across Britain, carers, both paid and unpaid, often feel undervalued, underpaid and overworked.
00:15In places like Farnham, Borden, Hazelmere and Liphook, care homes are struggling to fill vacancies.
00:22The national shortage is critical. Vacancy rates and social care are three times the UK average.
00:28And now the government wants to hike visa fees for overseas carers who are already in their jobs in this country by 32%.
00:37It's short-sighted and dangerous.
00:40This crisis won't fix itself. We need action.
00:45And that's why the Liberal Democrats are calling for a new carers minimum wage, at least £2 above the standard rate, to recruit and retain British workers.
00:54And let's not forget the millions of unpaid carers sacrificing their own well-being to support others.
01:01They deserve proper support, recognition and protection.
01:06This isn't about politics. It's about people.
01:09We need to support those carers that hold the social fabric of our society together.
01:14Let's have fairness first.
01:16Let's make a care system that truly cares.
01:19Let's make a care system thatés oil spillents.
01:38Let's make a comment.
01:41Let's make a care system.
