00:00So
00:30Over the course of the past two weeks or so, there was a large rock instability that developed
00:59above the glacier. So there's a mountain and rock started falling off the mountain and
01:04depositing on the glacier. And then over the course of the past few days, we saw this glacier
01:10under the weight of this rock starting to accelerate. So it started to flow more quickly
01:16down towards the valley. And ultimately, what happened yesterday, while we don't know precisely
01:23what the chain of events was in the last hour to minutes before it all kind of crashed down
01:30into the valley, ultimately, the ice of the glacier and the large amount of rock that had
01:36been deposited on top of the glacier came crashing down.
01:43And now, we're going to be moving towards the glacier. We're going to be moving towards
01:48the glacier. And we'll be원이ouvel and we'll be able tockspame it. And we'll be moving
01:52around to the glacier. And we'll be able to anniversary, though, because it was hard to
01:53run through to the glacier. And at the glacier the разр stared of the glacier, we're going to
01:58just go to the glacier, where it's going to be in the middle of the glacier. And there's
02:00a guy that's going to be here. And there were a little bit of a-looking
02:02escalation in the boat. And there was a bit of a-looking up-looking
02:06park. And there were a bit of the two-looking drifting in the glacier. And there was a little
02:08in this case we don't fully know yet what the dimensions are and that will only become clear
02:23um over the course of the next few days as you know the maps are being made and the pictures
02:29taken and so forth but it's it's absolutely large and you know the images are just utterly
02:36devastating that we see of the of the valley
03:06so
03:08so
03:14so
03:18so
03:36so we don't know for sure whether you know climate change is the main driver um of this event because
03:42we would need to know for certain whether this event would have happened in a reality that
03:48doesn't have any climate change and we don't have that parallel reality really and what we know is
03:54that you know climate change at high elevations is not favorable for um rock slope stability so
04:00with increasing temperatures more water available through ice and snow melts um maybe precipitation
04:06precipitation falling even high elevations more often as rain than as snow so those are factors
04:12that are not beneficial to mountain stability um
04:36with climate change um certainly being some driver in in big changes that we're seeing in the mountains
04:53or maybe the main uh driver that we see behind changes in the mountains even if we can't say for sure
05:00that uh it caused this particular event then the only thing we can do at that level is really try to
05:08minimize the global warming and that means reducing greenhouse gases
05:30uh it's certainly a really really rare event and you know kind of a sequence of
05:54of really unfortunate coincidences if you want with this the rock face right above
06:00this glacier and then the glacier being or kind of that valley being so in line with with the town
06:06underneath um i don't expect that we'll see anything like this you know anytime soon yes it can
06:14happen again it's rock falling onto a glacier we have lots of rock we have quite a few glaciers
06:19um so it's not impossible but i think
06:30what you see is just something that like on paper you knew could happen but then when you see it it's
06:56it's it just takes your breath away because you still it's just not possible really to imagine
07:03it beforehand and then the images are just really really shocking and you know my hearts with the
07:09local population and emergency responders who are who are dealing with this absolutely mind-blowing
07:15situation on site
