00:44I wasn't supposed to live here. I traveled all over the world but I could never shake
01:05this place off. This place never leaves you. It haunts you. I have five of my generations
01:16buried in the same place. This is my home. This is where my heart is. You don't let that
01:24go. The Maglan Islands, they call us the Jewel of the Gulf. We're a group of islands connected
01:35through sand dunes and causeways. It's literally a dot in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence
01:44shaped like a fish hook. On the northeast point. We have 415 people. Fishing is number
01:53one. We grew up in the boat. Generation after generation of old stories. The people who
02:05built this place. Life with the ocean storms that destroyed the land. Stories about the
02:19biggest catches. People that survived accidents. Stories about shipwreck survivors washing
02:42up on shore. Joining the community and marrying into the community. These stories. It's who
02:56we are. It's everything that we have. It's our legacy to survive. We're a dying breed.
03:06We're going to fish right until we cannot fish no more. Will we see Anacostia Island
03:23today? Northeast of the Maglan Islands, the Miss Sophia Daisy and its captain, Adam Clark,
03:44are on a 250 kilometer run to their crab grounds. Adam, he was born to be a fisherman.
04:01And I'm not just saying that because he's my brother, but he knows how to do everything.
04:10Nancy and Adam are Clark's. A family that has been a cornerstone of the community for over a
04:19century. Born and bred a lobster fisherman, so crab is a big change for me. The 37 year old vet
04:26is still new to the high stakes world of crab fishing. But love the new challenge on anything
04:32really. So like not running marathons or anything like that, I wouldn't do that. But a challenge
04:39fishing. That's pretty much me. Four minutes. Every fishery has its rules. For Atlantic snow
04:49crab, it's all about weight. The faster a captain hits quota, the bigger the payday. The longer it
04:55takes, the more fuel is burned, the more wages are paid, and the more the profit shrinks. I'm
05:01hoping to get my crab very quickly. Last year I had a lot of expense in the fuel, and this year
05:07I'm hoping to do it in half. But Adam's crab license is the furthest and most remote of any
05:12captain from the Magellans. Zone 12C is a 65 square kilometer area east of Anticoste Island
05:20near Quebec's North Shore. Depending on conditions, it can take up to 12 hours just to reach the start
05:26of the zone. Let's go time. Everyone else has only got like a 20-30 mile to ever sail. It's like
05:35two cups of coffee. When you go for Anticoste, it's a little bit different. We're late. I wanted to start hauling at 9.
05:45Keep an eye out for the buoys, guys. Out here, time is money. And today, Adam is running behind.
05:51Let's go, go, go, go, go. His crew set their gear three days ago. Now it's a race against the clock to fish as quickly as possible.
06:01Last season, this area was loaded. Full pots and big paydays. Adam is banking on the same returns.
06:09That's a bad pot. But in crab fishing, there are no guarantees. Very bad. First pot was very bad.
06:22That's bad, too. Uh-oh. Last year, this one here was really good, too.
06:29Each trip, you want to hope you make at least 20 grand. You need that.
06:37When you come back from less than that, you're making a hope.
06:41Not hoping them anyway.
06:43Um, yeah.
06:59I'm not happy, no. Puzzle.
07:10Nope.
07:12Worse than last time. These are just the first couple.
07:18Day's not over yet.
07:35It's a beautiful day to be a skull fisherman, boy.
07:37All right. This is where we turn boys to men. We're the Moonship.
07:45Two hours off the southeastern tip of the Magdalene Islands.
07:52It's opening day of scallop fishing season for Captain William Burke and the crew of the Moonship.
07:59Being out there first is pretty important. The bottom has been closed for several months.
08:06Nothing's been touched. And the scallops are just laying all over the bottom.
08:11Hey, deck box, check the shells.
08:14It's William's 15th season as a captain and his sixth running a scallop operation.
08:20I got two boys and a girl, but I wanted to run a boat since I was 15.
08:25But I wanted to run a boat since I was 15. Paid a half a million dollars.
08:30Look at me now, captain of the Moonship.
08:34Scallop fishing requires massive, stable boats to handle the heavy weight of the rigging.
08:40And Captain William has one of the biggest and most unique vessels around, the Moonship.
08:47Moonship is a little bigger boat that I bought. I got a discount on this brownie purple.
08:55I put 10 cups of black in it. New color Moonship purple.
09:01Sounds amazing. Sounds crisp.
09:03Still needs a little bit of love, maybe a shower and a kitchen.
09:07Five minutes, boys.
09:10Before the crew hits the deck, there's one tradition that needs to be taken care of.
09:22Kiss the troll's butt for good luck.
09:26Hey, move over, I'll show you how it's done.
09:28That used to be my troll when I was a kid, and it was like a good luck thing.
09:33We didn't, for sure. I don't know if that really actually is a thing or not, but
09:37keeping the crew pumped up was really important. Like a hockey coach or something out there,
09:42you know, yelling and screaming. Kiss the troll's butt, and they love it.
09:50Not my first rodeo, buddy.
09:52Tighten up your hat.
09:54To harvest scallops, the Moonship is equipped with two large sets of dredges, or drags,
09:59each containing six heavy metal nets that drop from the sides of the boat down to the ocean floor.
10:05Drags in the water.
10:07The drags comb the seabed, sifting through sediment to catch scallops,
10:13before being hauled back up.
10:15Here we go. The grind starts.
10:20Pull the ends in close to the boat.
10:22Looks like scallops!
10:25The deck of the Moonship is a minefield of rigging, full of heavy cables,
10:30thick ropes, and swinging dredges.
10:33Out of all the fisheries, I would say that's the most dangerous.
10:36With all that heavy metal, it's a recipe for disaster.
10:41We're always looking for the big scallops.
10:44Scallops are coming up all mixed with thousands of pounds of rock being
10:47left up over the side of the boat. You just don't know what's going to happen.
10:52Come on, untie that pole. Take it right up on the table. Take the hook there.
11:03The rope holding the dumping pole broke, narrowly missing the crew.
11:08Yeah, last time we seen that rope was getting chafed,
11:10it should have been changed before it broke.
11:14It should have been replaced, but out on the water, there's no time for should have.
11:20Good, ready. Come on boys, wake the f**k up.
11:32There's also no time for slowdowns. William can only drag for 16 hours a day.
11:38Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hey William.
11:42S**t. Put the hook back on it.
11:47The eye bolt securing the gallus block to the boom has snapped.
11:51I just broke that. That's a bad beginner's mistake back there. It's not supposed to happen.
11:58Just hours into the first day of the season, the moon ship is dead in the water.
12:04I think I forgot to kiss the troll's butt for good luck. This really f**ks up our day.
12:25Springtime on the Magdalen Islands, and the chase is on.
12:29And the chase is on. For the next six months, life revolves around one thing, fishing.
12:37Everything's off, like all the kids, their schedule's gone,
12:41it's just like the whole village is out fishing or in the fish plants. And if the fishing didn't
12:49exist, then there would be no need for school, there'd be no need for the store,
12:53there'd be no need for the post office, you know, so it is the economy.
12:59Back off the southeastern coast of the Magdalens.
13:04Clean this table as fast as you can. We're going to have to just run one side for now.
13:08The moon ship is at half strength. A critical rigging failure has put Captain William in a
13:13tight spot. When you pull the dregs back to the gallus block, if the dregs go all the way up into
13:19the shackle, you can damage the eye bolt that holds the block on the gallus. And that's exactly
13:26what I did there. Good. We're going to continue to fish with just one side until we figure out
13:37a fix here. She's locked in.
13:42Scallop fishing is a brutal game. Captains have just 10 days to make their catch.
14:00Quick fixes aren't optional.
14:06Their life or death for the season. It's hard to get a season in 10 days straight with no problems.
14:12There's already a pretty big swell here now too, so I don't know if we're going to be able to rig
14:17something up or not. Hey, somebody's going to have to come take the wheel for a minute. With
14:21only one side harvesting scallops, the moon ship is dragging, literally unbalanced and pulling hard.
14:30Hours from help, it's up to the captain to find a fix and save the day.
14:34When it comes to fixing up on the water, I'm your guy. I never give up.
14:42If you can just rig that up, finish the day, you're better off.
14:47Choppy seas are making repairs dangerously difficult.
14:51Can you hold the top part and I'll just unscrew it? I don't know if we're going to be able to
14:55get that like that. It's an awful place to try to work. It's real hard when the weather's rough
15:03like that. You feel messed up for sure. Everything's moving. You're out on the side of the
15:07boat and you're rocking back and forth. Pretty goddamn sketchy. I can't get it on. Okay, like
15:14that. Can you hold that there? Don't lose it. I can't do it. I can't do it. I lost the bolt.
15:27One bolt, one mistake, and just like that, time's slipping away for the moon ship.
15:37We're just entering the crab zone now.
15:45Like it just looked like a waterfall going back. Two hours off the east coast of the Magdalens,
15:50Captain Stephen Clark is pulling his first snow crab pots of the year.
15:56That's a pinch, brother. Like most of the island's fishermen, the 31-year-old captain has spent much
16:03of his life on the water. This is my 16th season, my ninth one on my own as a captain.
16:09Big wave guys. I was 14 or 15. I come home from school one day and my uncle asked me, he said,
16:16what are you doing next spring? You want to come fishing and that was it. Packed up my shit. I
16:22never went back. I took the bus home with all my stuff in September. My father was pretty pissed.
16:28We have crab! Nice ones. Stephen has one of the biggest catch quotas on the islands,
16:35a high-stakes gamble he took two years ago. We have 168,000 pounds to catch. The real goal is
16:41to catch the quota, whether you fish for three days or you fish for three weeks. When the quota
16:46is done, you're done. Stephen is one of many snow crab captains in these waters,
16:53but he keeps tabs on his best friend who is pulling pots hours away.
16:57Catch me through to the fishing vessel Miss Sophia Daisy around Anacostia Island, over.
17:05This is Miss Sophia Daisy. Yeah, are you there, Adam? Yeah, I got your feed, yep.
17:13Two years ago, Stephen sold his old crab license to Adam. Adam, he's my best bud. I called Adam,
17:21I said, I got this crazy opportunity. Bigger quota, it's closer to home, and he's like,
17:27well, you should take it. He said, I'll buy yours then. He's like, I'll get into crab fishing. He
17:31said, I'll buy yours and you buy that one. People said I was crazy, find something closer,
17:39but I like fishing far. There's nothing, nothing at all.
17:50Okay, now we're flat calm here. The best friends have a lot in common,
17:55but took different approaches to naming their boats. Adam, a father to three girls,
18:01went the traditional route. My boat's Miss Sophia Daisy, named after my daughter.
18:07Stephen is a father too, but it's not his young son's name on the side of his boat.
18:13Stephen, every boat he's got his funny name. His last boat was Chasing Tail,
18:18but there was another nasty name.
18:20My boat's called Deep Insider, because I'm cool, man.
18:30You're an insider boat, insider, you know, inside, but you can have a, you know,
18:36set your gear deep inside.
18:42When you build a new boat, you get a form from Transport Canada. You got to put three
18:45You get a form from Transport Canada. You got to put three name selections on it, right?
18:49They're the ones that chose Deep Insider, so I was like, let her fly, buddy.
18:55Northsider, insider, well, insider, I guess, Deep Insider.
19:0465 miles to my eastern buoy.
19:08The thing with the Anacostia trips, that a certain part of the channel,
19:12there's like a dead zone there for a couple hours,
19:14so you can't just pick up a cell phone and see how he's making out,
19:17or see how things are getting along.
19:19I still got, I think, 50 traps left.
19:27Did the nut come off? My block is about to lose my block.
19:32Ah, talk to you later.
19:35Adam's crab hauler is failing mid-pull.
19:39On the other side, no nut.
19:41Why don't you just take that one off, throw the other one on right there?
19:44No, I got a trap half up here now. It's going to fall apart. I'm going to lose it.
19:52It's blowing hard today, right?
19:55Stephen's got his own battery, heavy seas, high winds, and crab gear that's taking a beating.
20:02There's a lot of things that can go wrong. You pull the trap up out of the water without
20:06stopping it, and you pull it right up into the end of the boom,
20:08like you can fly up into the boom or break the block off. You have to be alerted there.
20:15They say it's like the most dangerous job in the world, right?
20:18A job where disaster can strike at any minute.
20:27Watch out, watch out, Leo. Get off the table!
20:31We're over.
20:38It's a bad day for the fishermen off the Magdalene islands.
20:46It's broken.
20:55Watch out, watch out, Leo. Get off the table!
20:57Stephen's crab hauler has broken under the strain of heavy swells.
21:03Just wait, Kyle. Just let it go.
21:06Leg out.
21:07So with all the crab in the bottom of the trap,
21:10water can't pass through it.
21:12That puts a lot of strain on the rope.
21:15One wave came that twisted the boat
21:17different than what she wanted to do,
21:18and just the weakest part broke, right?
21:20There's always a weak link.
21:22Sheared the bolt.
21:24Fixable, though.
21:26Luckily, the captain's got a spare.
21:30Where'd this one go?
21:31Right in the second one, Stephen?
21:32Second or third?
21:33Put it in the second one, I guess.
21:35A lot of moving parts on a fishing boat.
21:38Very f***ing rarely.
21:39It always runs smooth the whole day.
21:41Breaking things.
21:48With a quick fix...
21:50Yes, sir.
21:51...they're back hunting crab.
21:55Fishing, baby.
22:02Go home on my block.
22:03It's about to lose my block.
22:05Far to the north, on the Miss Sophia Daisy,
22:08Adam's crab traps have been coming up empty.
22:11The nut came off the block.
22:13And now, they may not be coming up at all.
22:16It's going to fall apart.
22:17We're going to lose it.
22:18Ah, f***.
22:20Watch out that I don't come right here to the hauler.
22:22If we have no block, we can't pull gear.
22:24We have to go home.
22:25So that's basically like, you know,
22:28probably like $6,000 or $8,000 wasted trip.
22:32Son of a whore.
22:34Come on, baby.
22:35Oh, come on, baby.
22:40So watch your hands, guys.
22:42We've got to get it set down.
22:44Is my spare block still there?
22:46Yeah, it's right there.
22:48We'll just get the nut off, but...
22:49With the pot safely on board...
22:51Just a 5'8 nut.
22:54Or a 3-quarter nut.
22:55Is it loose there now?
22:56Yeah, it's still on.
22:58...Adam races to bolt the block back together.
23:01OK, we got a hammer or something, guys?
23:07Just tap it there.
23:10Get a hammer and tap it through.
23:12With no block, there's no way to hoist crab pots.
23:17I got it.
23:20OK, now we're going to need another adjustable wrench.
23:23There, you start tightening them.
23:26I'll go find another wrench for it.
23:28We're just putting it back together here now.
23:31There's someone holding that on the other side.
23:34To make sure that we can get our gear finished.
23:39Just tightening everything up now.
23:44Back in business.
23:47Lucky I had a spare one aboard,
23:49because I thought I was going to lose everything over.
23:52I was just about to come apart.
23:54We're going to go a half a mile to the next one.
23:59On the moon ship...
24:01How are you today, William?
24:03...the only thing they're fishing for is help.
24:06Yeah, you wouldn't have an eyeball to embark.
24:09With only 10 days to fish scallops,
24:11William can't afford to lose the first one.
24:15Hey, we've got to get that block down now.
24:17Try as soon as you can.
24:19We've got to get that block down now.
24:21We've got to get that block down now.
24:23We've got to get that block down now.
24:25Hey, we've got to get that block down now.
24:27Try as soon as you've got an eyeball.
24:29Lock it in.
24:31We're going to sail towards them and pick it up.
24:35Fishing's really competitive.
24:37When someone needs help, though,
24:39you don't hesitate, for sure.
24:41It doesn't matter who it is.
24:43They're throwing it over on a buoy now.
24:45By giving me those spare parts,
24:48he saved me today.
24:50They might need me someday, too.
24:52Hey, thank you.
24:54Somebody helps you.
24:56After 2 hours dead in the water...
24:58Good to go, boys.
25:00...they're back to full power.
25:02Now it's a race to salvage the day.
25:04We lost some time,
25:06but we'll be able to get back on it.
25:08The day ain't over.
25:14All stations, all stations, all stations,
25:16this is single-chair radio.
25:18Inform a warning if an explosion is felt.
25:22Inform a warning.
25:25Oh.
25:27The Coast Guard puts out an urgent warning.
25:30A gale-force storm is bearing down on the Magdalenes.
25:33It's quite different from any other place that you'll ever be.
25:37When it blows here, there's no protection.
25:40The weather can change pretty quickly, that's for sure.
25:43The past decade, stronger storms and warmer winters
25:46have battered the islands,
25:48eroding half a meter of shoreline every year.
25:51We've always had, in the winter months,
25:54an ice wall to protect us.
25:56This winter, there was no ice at all.
25:58It just keeps beating and beating and beating
26:00and eating away at the island.
26:02It hits my house with an awful force that rocks my bed.
26:06I can feel the bed shaking some nights.
26:11When she comes, she comes running.
26:16Stephen turns the Deep Insider around.
26:19He'll wait out the storm in the harbor with other captains.
26:23But Adam doesn't have that option.
26:26The thing with the Anacostia trips,
26:28there's like 3 forecasts to go through,
26:31because he's heading even further north and further east.
26:34I just got the new weather update,
26:36and the wind's supposed to hit a little earlier.
26:39We've got to put her full speed.
26:41The storm is tracking straight for Adam's zone.
26:45It takes me 6 hours to finish 55 plus.
26:49That's midnight.
26:52We're 150 miles from home here now,
26:55so we're going to have to try to get these done very, very quickly.
27:00We're straight up to the north part of the zone there now.
27:04Just as the weather turns, so does Adam's catch.
27:11Woo-hoo!
27:15We've got crab! We've got crab!
27:20Once you catch that amount of crab, no one can stop you.
27:24We're on the crab.
27:26It's quite dangerous, really.
27:28That's what we need to catch up for the bad ones today.
27:31You've got to stay focused on what you're doing out there,
27:34because if you let everything else get your head out of the game,
27:37things can go wrong for you just real quick.
27:41Last loader up, boys.
27:43It's very common to have a calm before a storm.
27:46It's seen worse.
27:50The weather is fine right now.
27:53This is the calm before the storm,
27:55but I think it's going to be a lot bigger storm coming.
27:58We're on the crab.
28:06Get back on track.
28:08Let's get our life back on track.
28:12Yeah, baby!
28:14Southeast of the Magdalene Islands,
28:17Captain William and the moon ship are scrambling to make up for lost time.
28:22That's what I'm talking about!
28:26After a rough morning, the crew is finally getting into a rhythm.
28:30Starting to get my groove back.
28:32So I chuck round side up.
28:34Knife goes in, turn, scrape the top,
28:37flick that other shell off around the guts.
28:40This one's orange.
28:42They taste the same, they turn the same color when they're cooked.
28:45Beautiful.
28:48Wow, look at that swell coming. Holy frig.
28:52Whoa!
28:54But Mother Nature isn't done messing with them yet.
28:57The swells are getting pretty big right now.
29:00Get those rigs nice and tight beside the boat.
29:03I'll keep them down in the water a bit
29:06until we know, like, we see there's no big roll coming,
29:09then we get them up.
29:11Here we go, boys! Oh, they're full!
29:13A heavy haul in rough seas is a dangerous mix.
29:16The weather is the most important thing.
29:18Sometimes you lift up thousands of pounds of rock
29:21and once they get in the air,
29:23a sea hits the boat at the same time.
29:28If you don't drop them on the table on the first try,
29:32you missed your shot, then they get swinging around.
29:35That's when it gets dangerous.
29:39More swell now for Charlie.
29:41Martin called me, he's going in, he said.
29:46William gets word other boats are retreating back to shore.
29:50I don't know what to do.
29:52They're not sure yet either.
29:54But we've got an hour,
29:56we're not going to stay up here by ourselves, I don't think.
29:59We can't break any more stuff.
30:05Okey-dokey then, boy.
30:09Come on, boys, he's going in.
30:11This is the last pullback of the day.
30:13We were calling it quits.
30:15The wind and the swells too much.
30:17It wasn't as long of a trip as what we thought,
30:20what we hoped for.
30:23It's an abrupt end to day one of scallop fishing.
30:27Tired not to do the day.
30:29But offload our catch
30:31and wait for the weather to come back out again.
30:34We're a half day behind, man.
30:36We've got to get it back going out.
30:44The next day
30:54Back on shore, the wind strengthens
30:57and captains bring their crews into safe harbour.
31:00Life with the ocean, with Mother Nature,
31:03you don't know what can suddenly crop up.
31:09So any windy day during fishing,
31:11there's definitely like an anxiety around.
31:15But for Nancy, there's bigger worries.
31:18Her brother Adam is still out at sea,
31:21his crew out of contact.
31:23I feel like we always worry more about Adam.
31:26I wouldn't want to be out there and all that.
31:33Adam's disaster at sea years ago
31:35is still fresh in everyone's mind.
31:38I remember that day.
31:42I'd just got in, I'd just got home or something like that
31:45and then the phone rang.
31:47It was a complete physical blow when I heard it.
31:51I came in just ahead of him,
31:53maybe 15, 20 minutes ahead of him.
31:57Just about five minutes before coming in,
32:00we put our life jackets on.
32:02I don't know why, but we did.
32:07Breakers started coming up behind us,
32:09grabbed us and just pushed the boat really fast,
32:12zero control, and she toppled over.
32:17Everything's upside down.
32:22The water was rising.
32:24I was very, very calm.
32:26It's almost like this is it.
32:28It's all game over here.
32:31Water gushing in from everywhere,
32:33and that floor just above my head,
32:35we had an air pocket there.
32:38But Alexan there, he said,
32:40we've got to get out of here.
32:42I tried to go out first,
32:44and then I went the wrong way.
32:46And the second time, I knew what way to go
32:48because the sunlight really lit up the exit.
32:53I came up first, and I popped up.
32:56Alexan was supposed to be right behind me,
32:59Alexan was supposed to be right behind me,
33:01but he wasn't there.
33:12It must have been a minute later.
33:14He came up all full of oil.
33:16He don't remember.
33:18He blacked out, but he ended up in the engine room.
33:25The Lord was with us there and all that.
33:28One of the happiest times of my life,
33:30seeing him though.
33:32It would have ruined my life.
33:34I thought he was a goner.
33:41I don't know.
33:42It changes you for sure.
33:44It's always with you.
33:46It's always with you.
33:57Far to the north, off Anticosti Island.
34:00I don't think there's very much in this one.
34:03The windstorm hasn't hit Adam's crew yet,
34:06but that's the only good news.
34:08His quest for crab has yet to pay off.
34:10Might be a crate.
34:13You want to try to catch at least 10,000, 15,000 pounds
34:16every trip.
34:18But he's running out of time.
34:20Bad weather coming.
34:22Still calm, but it's coming.
34:25Got to get these things fished quickly as possible
34:28and get the hell out of here.
34:30Timer's running.
34:33It's 4 a.m.
34:35It's all a gamble.
34:37A new day.
34:39And Captain William is betting the storm has moved
34:41far enough north for day two of scallop fishing to begin.
34:45Hey, you on there?
34:47There's a little bit of swell as we get out here,
34:49but hard to tell.
34:51We're the only ones out here.
34:53This morning we're the first ones to leave.
34:55Some guys don't feel like they're going to be able to
34:57catch anything.
34:59You want to sail right to the track or what?
35:01I don't want to be crazy and go out there and fish
35:03by myself kind of thing.
35:05I don't want to be out here all alone,
35:07so we're working as a team.
35:09William isn't the only one rolling the dice this morning.
35:12His cousin Todd isn't far behind.
35:15I see you back there.
35:17That's for safety for sure.
35:19It's nice to have another boat around.
35:21The wind and swell can be a little dangerous,
35:24but we're going to make it.
35:26The wind and swell can be a little dangerous,
35:29but when we get out there, it might not be as bad
35:31as what it sounds, and if so, we'll be fishing.
35:35The captain sets his course for a three-hour sail
35:38and hopes Mother Nature calms down.
35:41If it gets worse or not is what we don't know.
35:51We'd like to beat the bad weather coming.
35:55Please, Lord, let the wind hold off till I'm done.
35:59Up north near Anacostia Island,
36:01Captain Adam and his crew have been grinding through the night,
36:05chasing crab and racing the clock.
36:07Big trap!
36:09A gale-force storm is barreling straight into their path home.
36:14We got them all out?
36:16Yeah.
36:17Okay, we can get her done, boys.
36:19The captain's got ten traps left,
36:21ten more chances to make this trip count.
36:24There's never enough.
36:26There's never enough crab, there's never enough lobster,
36:29there's just, you're always wanting more.
36:31The more the devil has, the more the devil wants.
36:34Guys, keep a lookout for my buoys,
36:36that's the best thing you can do for me.
36:38Wind's starting to pick up a lot now.
36:43The storm is closing in fast.
36:47Oh!
36:49Grab her, grab her!
36:51Yeah, yeah, yeah!
36:53I'm over.
36:55That's gone now.
36:57Oh, my God, I hate losing this trap.
37:00Oh!
37:17The captain's got a call to make.
37:21You've got to know when to push it to the limits,
37:24when to play it safe.
37:26Yeah.
37:33It looks like it's going to be quite the swell out here.
37:36Back south, the moon ship closes in on the scallop beds.
37:39Not that far now.
37:41But the latest forecast changes everything.
37:44It's calling for 30,
37:46so if we get 30, that's pretty shitty, 30 northeast.
37:4930-knot winds are imminent.
37:54Come on, boys, time to get up.
37:56We've got a call to make for sure.
38:01William checks in with his cousin Todd.
38:04Yes, sir.
38:08Is it going to get worse, though, that's the question.
38:12I don't know.
38:16I'm really stubborn, so it's hard to give up.
38:19I don't like giving up.
38:21Maybe regret going in, but let's turn around and go in.
38:24It's the right call to make, though, just in case.
38:27Yeah, you're right.
38:29But better be safe than sorry.
38:32Well, the decision is made, boys. We're going home.
38:35Part of me feels sad about that.
38:38If we haven't seen enough, there will be no fishing today.
38:41The risk just isn't worth it.
38:44As captain of the boat, you got to look out for your boys.
38:47At the end of the day, we're not trying to kill anybody out there
38:50just to get ahead on a couple dollars.
39:01Not worth it.
39:03Up north...
39:05Adam concedes on an awful first trip.
39:08He wanted 10,000 pounds of crab, but didn't even break 2,500.
39:162,400 pounds.
39:20That's not good.
39:26That doesn't pay your fuel, doesn't pay your men.
39:30Larry, bad weather coming.
39:33But the catch is secondary.
39:35Adam and his crew are still 10 hours from shore.
39:38Last push, boys, the last push.
39:41And need to run straight through the storm.
39:46Can't be no worse.
39:48Okay, whoever's tired now, go to sleep now,
39:51because you're not going to sleep after.
39:55Pedal to the metal.
40:00We've got some waves coming up ahead.
40:03Dawn brings no relief to Captain Adam and the crew of the Miss Sophia Daisy.
40:07Make sure you've got two hands on something.
40:09They're still battling the final blows of the Gale Force storm.
40:12Every wave, a fight.
40:14Oh, boy.
40:19Normally you've got a wind, you've got one steady wave,
40:22now it's like a whole wave.
40:24For 10 brutal hours,
40:27For 10 brutal hours,
40:29it's been rogue swells and steady rollers.
40:41You all right, buddy?
40:45Making a little better headway.
40:48Oh, we're knocking the miles down again, boys.
40:51You know, 30 miles from home was just like,
40:54I knew I had to beat, so.
40:57Oh, I never thought the day was done.
41:01Battered and bruised, Captain Adam and his crew have taken a beating
41:05through the worst conditions they've ever fished in.
41:08You guys got balloons on the side?
41:11And finally, the harbor is in sight.
41:17Get a tide quick, the tide's strong.
41:25Took a long time to get home.
41:28It's just like he made it, so.
41:32It's a bittersweet homecoming.
41:34The first trip of the season was a bust,
41:37but the captain finds the upside.
41:39It doesn't hurt to have a bad catch
41:41because you'll have your gear in certain bad spots.
41:45You'll find all the bad spots and eventually find the good spot.
41:51But right now, the catch doesn't matter.
41:54It's about making it home safe.
41:56I was thinking about home a lot. Missed seeing the kids.
42:10Born and raised on a siren
42:13And she was her family's way
42:17So cute.
42:25Look how he's shaking.
42:30For three days, he fought the seas.
42:32Now, Adam soaks in the simplest of victories.
42:37We made it, and I'm happy to be home.
42:42But the season's just getting started on the Magdalens,
42:45and the next battle is already on the horizon.
42:49Fishing is very much the culture here.
42:51We're brought up in fishing.
42:53Some years it's good, some years it's bad.
42:56For me, it's a real thrill to be out there.
42:59It's a real thrill to make our living at it.
43:02It's just something that I like doing.
43:08That's the way I like it.
43:10Is everyone happy now?
