Day 2 of the Eagles OTAs was held today, open to the media. We received some huge answers regarding positional battles, early favorites to emerge, and even an indication regarding a potential trade in the coming months. In other news, we got to hear from new Offensive Coordinator Kevin Patullo for the first time as he discussed his mentality heading into this season. He also dove into some similarities and differences from Kellen Moore and Nick Sirianni. Lastly, we hear from the newly re-signed Dallas Goedert who is back for another run with the Birds! Today, RB discusses all of this and more!
Transcript
00:00So the Eagles held day two of OTAs today, and we received some huge insights on underlying
00:06questions that we had going into OTAs.
00:08We'll talk about leads on positional battles, certain players taking strides forward this
00:13season, one guy who could be on the move this summer, and we even got to hear from new OC
00:18Kevin Petullo for the first time as he discusses his similarities and differences to Nick Sirianni
00:23and Kellen Moore.
00:24We will break it all down right here on A to Z Philly, but welcome on in.
00:27I'm R.B., we cover the birds every single day, and we started off with the new addition
00:32at the Eagles practice bubble.
00:34Look at that bad boy, man.
00:362017 now mirrored by 2024, just a very nice reminder of what this team was able to accomplish.
00:43Very special, but hey, now it's time to turn the page and move forward.
00:48Excellent turnout today for the Eagles voluntary OTAs like we mentioned yesterday.
00:52The vets don't have to show up, but it shows a lot of professionalism, a lot of team chemistry,
00:56and just team camaraderie, and shows a lot of support for some of these younger guys that
01:02the vets are willing to show up.
01:03Some of the players who were not there today were Devontae Smith, Lane Johnson, Landon Dickerson,
01:08Bryce Huff, Reed Blankenship, Ben Van Sumer, and Avery Williams.
01:12Cam Juergens, N'Kobe Dean, and Jahad Campbell were not participating, but they were present.
01:17So overall, great turnout for the Philadelphia Eagles, and we'll get into all of it, but I want
01:22to start off with the most important piece, and that is Kevin Petullo.
01:27Now, he had about a 10, 15-minute interview.
01:30I listened to the entire thing, and one thing stood out to me about Kevin Petullo.
01:34He seems very calm, cool, and collected.
01:36He seems like a guy who's not going to go on a frenzy, and he's not going to just panic
01:41and lose his mind in certain situations.
01:43Now again, very early, what can you really take away from these interviews?
01:47And, you know, OTAs, not a lot, but I just liked his sense of composure, and even when
01:53they faced him with hard questions today, he was willing to answer them.
01:56He seemed very respectable, and he also seems like a guy who says, hey, you know, even though
02:01I've been here with Nick, I've been his right-hand man, I'm not just going to do everything
02:05he wants me to do.
02:06I have my own philosophy, right?
02:08We're not the same guy, and I think that that's very important for the Eagles offense
02:13heading into the season.
02:14But here's what Kevin Petullo said could be different with the offense this season.
02:19Well, I mean, as far as different, you know, we go through the process at the end of each
02:23year of examining what we do well, what we need to improve on, and then really any trends
02:29or anything we see that we can add to it.
02:31So I think really when you say different, I think it's going to be like, what do our
02:35players do best, like it's been?
02:38And then from there, we just expand upon it.
02:40Hey, we're really good at this.
02:41Let's bring this to the table and try this and see where we can take it.
02:45And I think really when you look at just our staff as a whole, you know, we've got some
02:49new coaches, so they bring some other layers to it too, and then the knowledge of what they
02:53have from their background.
02:55So I think if we go forward, as we build this thing together as a staff, you know, you'll
03:00see some new wrinkles here and there, but more so it's just kind of going on our players
03:04do best.
03:04Probably my favorite answer of the entire press conference.
03:07He says, look, our whole offense is back.
03:09You know, we're not going to try to get too creative.
03:12We're not going to try all these different things like we did back in 2023.
03:15We have the guys here.
03:16We know what won the Super Bowl.
03:18We're just going to expand on what already works.
03:21We know what our guys do best.
03:22We know what their bread and butter is.
03:24We're going to try a few things here and there, a few wrinkles, but overall, just expanding
03:28on what we already know is best.
03:30And for a first-time play caller, very mature answer, hopefully they stick to whatever their
03:35identity is, which we know what it should be, right?
03:37Like stick to the run.
03:38Let's say Quan do his thing.
03:40So give me your thoughts on Kevin Petulo down below if you listen to the presser.
03:43But another thing he said that was very important is that he and Nick Sirianni see a lot of fundamental
03:47things the same way, but their brains work differently.
03:50He says they have great convos and challenge each other to grow as coaches.
03:54Now, again, you can't have another Brian Johnson situation, right?
03:57You can't let Nick put too much of his input into the middle of the table.
04:01Kevin Petulo has to stick up.
04:03He has to stick to his guns and also, you know, be able to communicate with Nick and
04:07some of the other coaches.
04:08So I like the fact that Petulo is not just going to be a Nick Sirianni puppet.
04:13I hope it plays out that way, but this is what you need, right?
04:16A guy who's been here in the building, but is willing to stick to his own philosophy, sticking
04:20on the offensive side of the ball.
04:21One of the big questions we had was who would be the starting right guard going into this
04:25next phase of the offseason, and I think we all expected it to be Tyler Steen, but he
04:30was out there today with the first team offensive line.
04:34So as of right now, it seems like he has the edge over Kenyon Green.
04:38Everything we talk about today, though, there's still a lot of time to go.
04:41So keep that in mind.
04:42But as of right now, it feels like they're confident with Tyler Steen.
04:46Now flipping over to the defensive side of the ball, we had a lot of questions that we discussed
04:50yesterday.
04:50Here was the starting defense for seven-on-seven drills today.
04:54Quinyon Cooper at the nickel, and Adoree Jackson was actually the corner, too.
04:59We'll talk about him more in just a few moments.
05:01Zach Bond, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., and then Sidney Brown starting at one of the safety spots.
05:06Reid Blankenship, like we said, was not present.
05:08And also Andrew Makuba getting first-team reps.
05:10Now that'll be interesting to see later down the line when Reid is back.
05:14Who do the Eagles favor first, Sidney Brown or Drew Makuba?
05:17So we'll talk about that, but I do want to expand a little bit.
05:21Here's a video of Andrew Makuba at OTAs today.
05:24Looks to be in shape.
05:25A little bit undersized like we know, but fierce, man.
05:29He's a fighter.
05:30He's very intense with his movements, and he just seems very explosive.
05:34And these are all the things that they said leading into the draft.
05:37So hopefully he can step up and be the guy.
05:39But ladies and gentlemen, Andrew Makuba getting first-team reps is huge.
05:43And ESP points that out here on Twitter.
05:45They're, again, just OTAs.
05:46But, I mean, if Howie Roseman did it again, if he brought in a guy,
05:51and we talked about yesterday, we think he could be really good.
05:53A lot of people around the league seem to think the same way.
05:56But the fact he was willing to trade C.J. Garner Johnson tells you
05:59he's confident in his drafting abilities.
06:01And if Vic Fangio can prepare Andrew Makuba to be ready on day one,
06:07I mean, how is this defense going to have any holes?
06:09How is this team going to have any holes?
06:11They seem to really be setting themselves up well.
06:13And if Andrew Makuba is good to go day one,
06:15and he's a solid to above-average player,
06:18Howie Roseman deserves a damn trophy for the way that he's prepared this team
06:22for long-term success.
06:24Staying in the secondary, our other big question was the cornerback spot.
06:28And as we just talked about, Adoree Jackson was the first guy out there.
06:32Keely Ringo was leading the Eagles' DB huddle today, which was nice.
06:35And ESP says that his size really stands out as well.
06:39So if we look at Keely Ringo here, he's number seven this year.
06:44Look at him, man.
06:45He is huge.
06:46He is tall, man.
06:48So, you know, pros and cons to everything.
06:50But Keely Ringo surely has some good NFL size.
06:54You know, hopefully he can stay with some of these speedy receivers.
06:58ESP says, Adoree Jackson ahead of Keely Ringo is at least a sign
07:01there's going to be a true competition.
07:03Now, again, maybe they're just favoring the vet here.
07:05But I really do think this could end up being the best camp battle
07:09as we get into July.
07:10So something to keep our eyes on.
07:12Also, Keely Ringo got some first-team reps as well
07:15at the cornerback two position.
07:17So it seems like they're neck and neck right now, back and forth.
07:20Again, very early.
07:21I like having the younger guy on a rookie contract
07:23and having the vet who's coming here on a one-year deal to prove themselves.
07:26So we'll see what happens there.
07:28Also, another interesting thing from Cooper DeGene.
07:31He says he's been playing both outside corner and inside corner.
07:34He plays outside in base, inside in nickel.
07:37I think we all expected this.
07:38But I think Cooper DeGene is much more suited to play nickel corner long term.
07:44Down the line, there could be some implications, right, financially.
07:47But he's such a vital piece.
07:48He's so important.
07:49And he was so damn good that if he can keep this up here in year two,
07:53I mean, the Eagles are going to have something really special here for a long time.
07:57And I think Vic Fangio knows what he's doing.
08:00Staying on the defensive side one more time,
08:03no Bryce Huff today here at Voluntary OTAs.
08:05We talked about this.
08:06Now, is it the end of the world?
08:08No.
08:09But given that the team won the Super Bowl,
08:11given that things did not work out for you well,
08:13you didn't really play at all in the playoffs that much,
08:16and you didn't play in the Super Bowl,
08:17you were a healthy scratch,
08:18you got your money,
08:19you have your Super Bowl ring,
08:21the least you could do is show up and show interest, right?
08:23It seems like Bryce Huff is still having this little standoff,
08:27and he might be a cut this summer.
08:28He might be traded if there is interest.
08:31There probably won't be.
08:32But I think as of right now,
08:34there's a little bit of an indication that he's not happy
08:36and how he will have to see how this plays out.
08:39If I'm Bryce Huff, I'm thinking,
08:40look, here are the Eagles losing a couple big defensive line pieces.
08:43Here's my chance to rejuvenate my career
08:46and show that I'm worth this money.
08:47So we'll see if he shows up here in the next couple weeks,
08:50but something to keep our eyes on.
08:52And even if he doesn't,
08:53Jalex Hunt says he has spent all offseason working on his technique,
08:57says the best edge players in the NFL have elite technique,
09:00and he wants to get there.
09:01I'm so excited and just very curious to see how Jalex Hunt plays this season.
09:06The guy really didn't play at all.
09:08First half of last year,
09:09had his first sack in week seven against the Giants.
09:11Then he started to get, you know,
09:1330, 35, 40, 45% of the snaps.
09:16Later in the season,
09:17after there were some injuries, right?
09:19Brandon Graham, guys like that.
09:21Then he plays amazing in the playoffs.
09:23He has a sack against the Rams.
09:24He has half a sack in the Super Bowl.
09:26This guy goes from a third round,
09:28pretty much red shirt,
09:29first year guy who wasn't expected to play at all.
09:32Not much film on him.
09:33And he's playing some of his best ball as a rookie in the Super Bowl.
09:37And again,
09:37just goes back to credit Vic Fangio.
09:39So if this guy could take another leap,
09:41it seems like his work ethic is there.
09:43I think he's going to be huge for this Eagles team.
09:47Now,
09:47flipping back to the offensive side,
09:49we got to hear from Dallas Goddard today.
09:51First time.
09:52And let's take a listen to what he had to say about how this offseason played out.
09:56Business of this league and how things seem to be trending.
10:00Yeah,
10:02there was a little bit of uncertainty going into the offseason.
10:05You know,
10:06talking to my agent,
10:07talking to Howie.
10:10Yeah,
10:10there was a time where,
10:12you know,
10:12I wasn't here for the beginning OTAs.
10:14We were trying to figure out what was going to happen.
10:16And,
10:16you know,
10:17we came to the agreement of the contract I'm on.
10:20And,
10:21you know,
10:21I'm super stoked to be back here.
10:23Got a lot of love for a lot of people in this building.
10:26Got a lot of love for Philadelphia.
10:27So,
10:28super glad to be back.
10:29And,
10:30you know,
10:30we got high expectations and,
10:31you know,
10:32want to help us get back to where we were last year.
10:34Very professional answer from Dallas Goddard.
10:37I appreciate the fact that he was open and honest.
10:39You know,
10:39he didn't hold back.
10:40Said,
10:40look,
10:40there was a time I didn't think I would be back,
10:42but I'm here.
10:43High expectations.
10:44Got to get back to work and prove my worth as well as the Eagles worth on offense.
10:49And now that he's back,
10:51I'm just so super confident that this offense can be elite again this season.
10:56Speaking of a guy who's brand new though,
10:57ESP says that watching Ty Robinson today,
11:00he thinks he's going to be pretty good right away.
11:02This was my prediction a couple of weeks ago to think out of all the rookies.
11:06Ty Robinson has a lot of upside.
11:07And even though he was drafted in the fourth round,
11:10he could be getting snaps on day one.
11:12He looks like an absolute menace.
11:13I can't wait to watch him in action.
11:15And the last couple of things to wrap up here.
11:17Jeff Stoutland today joined by who other than the man who saved the tush push shout out to
11:23Jason Kelsey at Eagles practice today.
11:26He can go be on ESPN.
11:27He can go be on podcasts and commercials.
11:29Doesn't matter.
11:30We know at heart,
11:32he bleeds green.
11:34Wouldn't be surprised to see him as a coach one day.
11:36If he feels like it,
11:37he has so many things going on,
11:38but shout out to Jason Kelsey.
11:40We appreciate you.
11:41Lastly,
11:41Jalen hurts had a perfect eight for eight start today in OTAs.
11:47Jalen hurts.
11:47Also finished the day playing pretty well here.
11:50Again,
11:51they're not going up against a real defense,
11:53but a solid day.
11:5420 for 21 says ESP grade B plus just getting back in the groove and getting back in the swing of things a little bit,
12:01but Jalen hurts coming out,
12:02not satisfied,
12:03ready to go for back to back Superbowl championships.
12:06You got to love this guy.
12:07He continues to put in the work.
12:09He continues to get better.
12:11No AJ,
12:12no Devante today,
12:13just Jalen going through the motion.
12:15So that's where we're at today,
12:17man.
12:17But give me your thoughts on the first and second day of Eagles OTAs.
12:21What do you want to see?
12:22What is the most intriguing battle?
