00:00Hello, this is Kalmo. My name is Mika. I'm the heavy cadavro.
00:25Kalmo is a Finnish doom metal band playing doom metal having
00:29influences from black metal.
00:32About the origins of Kalmo. Kalmo is having quite long roots.
00:37I think that the first thing that can be associated with Kalmo is from 2008.
00:42That is the time when I did compose some Mustaa.
00:47From there on I made a song in a year or in two years for just having fun.
00:55There wasn't any goal or any vision or any idea behind that.
00:59Around five years ago I decided to put more effort into this and I named this project or band as Kalmo.
01:10Earlier I was calling it as a Finnish froze as a tribute to you know what band.
01:21Kalmo is originally about doom.
01:23But like I mentioned it's having influences from black metal and as Kalmo goes forward and matures I think that it will take more influences from black metal in order to get the brutality element into its music.
01:39There always will be doom metal as a key element in Kalmo.
01:44Kalmo's music is raw, it's simplistic, it's grinding, it's slow, it's not melodical doom metal as such.
02:00At the moment there are no other members in Kalmo than myself.
02:06I've said that it's my wretched kingdom and that is on purpose and that is something that I want to keep it like for now.
02:15And there is a reason I wanted to learn how to compose songs, how to produce them, how to record them, how to produce albums, how to produce music videos.
02:30And I wanted to do that in order to know what are the things I need to know and what are the things I need to have an opinion about in order to be able to realize what I had in my mind and to be able to realize the vision that I have in my mind for Kalmo in the future.
02:54The influences that are more or less visible in Kalmo's music are coming from bands like Celtic Frost, Slayer, King Diamond, Vorun, Deathbreath, Hellhammer, Galhammer.
03:12The mention, mention couple of those bands that are important for me and through that also important for Kalmo.
03:21There's actually one story I would like to share with you about the moment what draw me into this genre of music.
03:29This goes way back, 84, 85, something around that time.
03:36We were at my friend's house.
03:38We were doing something, playing cards or playing those simple video games that were available during the time.
03:45We had MTV on, the music television on and there was something that got my attention.
03:51And that music video was Celtic Frost, The Circle of Tyrant.
03:58And that really draw my attention.
04:02I was so focused on that video when I first time saw it.
04:08And I think that that is the very moment when I sold my soul to this kind of genre of music or this style of music.
04:17And that black flame has been burning inside me forever since.
04:24The debut album or debut EP, Demony, Demon in English, and also having a wordplay into it, was released May 2019.
04:38After releasing Demony, I quite quickly started to think about the second release.
04:43Demony was like some kind of passage right to clean out the history, to make room for new material.
04:53I got up to speed with making new songs quite well, but at the end it took like one year or so to get songs ready for the second release.
05:07In the meantime, I did create a couple of singles and when I was campaigning for Calmo's contribution to the COVID-19 songs with the song Twinkle, also having music video available.
05:22The Slipped Record contacted me and we started to talk about the recording deal.
05:31And when we got that agreed, that gave me a huge boost of energy to complete the songs, do the recording and everything needed.
05:40And through that the Calmo's second release, Gehinum was spewed out through Slipped Records, April 13, 2021.
05:54Mixing mastering for Gehinum was done by Finnish company Sarni Music.
06:01And I think that they did a very good job with that.
06:05We didn't need to have that many iteration rounds.
06:08Of course, a couple of songs that required a couple of more rounds, but I think that they got an idea very well.
06:17I gave them quite a lot of freedom for mixing things and I must say that they did amazing work for the Gehinum album.
06:27The cover art is created by a Spanish artist and musician Jose Paz.
06:32We were discussing about what kind of things we would like to have to cover art.
06:41I had an idea to have the very moment of the end, the final moment captured there.
06:51Then I wanted to have some kind of character, the orchestrator of End of It All.
06:55And then we wanted to have some details there, so this coasts on a tree, France, Satellix, piece of art.
07:10We took that idea, put that there in.
07:13And also this coast of three was used in a booklet.
07:18The CD version is having a booklet with both lyrics both in Finnish and English.
07:23So we had that theme into that.
07:25And I think that Jose captured the idea of the end with all the details, with all the covers and everything there.
07:34So I'm very, very happy about that.
07:37There are two music videos available for Gehinum.
07:41The first one is a lyric video for the song Mariana.
07:44Mariana is Kalma's version of a traditional song from, say it's a true, Sweet William Ghost is the only name.
07:55I first, I heard the version, Farah Pyrttikanka's version of the song.
08:01Farah Pyrttikanka is a Finnish blues musician.
08:04And I immediately think that, okay, I need to make Kalma's version of it, this song.
08:08And I rewrote the lyrics, I wrote the song with the Kalma style, of course having the very essence of the song of the Mariana in it.
08:20And then for the music video I had the idea that it needs to be black and white, it has to be animated with the simple scenes.
08:32There are nine verses in the song and each verse is telling the story, building the story towards the end.
08:41So each of the verses have its own scene in the animation.
08:45I had Arto Törmännen, Finnish artist, to work with me for the graphics and for the animations there.
08:55And I think that Arto did an amazing job with that.
08:58The second music video is for the Kuole Linnu Laulu and I've been playing with the 3D graphics for some time and wanted to learn about that.
09:11And wanted to use that for a music video and that is Kuole Linnu Laulu where I combined live video and then the 3D animation.
09:21I'm pretty happy with the result. Of course there are a couple of things that I would like to have done differently now when I know more about that.
09:33And like I mentioned, Jose's cover art is also used as one key element in that music video.
09:42In the near future is to create a third music video for one of the songs from Gainon.
09:50I have the idea and I have the storyboards pretty much ready and now it's finding time for shooting it and producing it.
10:00Most likely within a month or so I'll be able to do that.
10:04Most likely there will be a third album within two or three years or something like that.
10:09And the music style will be pretty much the same of course. It will be, like I mentioned, it will mature as we go.
10:19If there will be a third album for Kaalamo, I want to use a real human in drums for that.
10:28So I'm thinking about using the session drummer for the third album whenever I'll start work on that.
10:35So if there's somebody interested in this kind of thing, contributing on Kaalamo, please send me notes.
10:42I've been building a vision that if I get third album completed and I still want to continue Kaalamo's story, I'll be inviting more members into Kaalamo.
10:55Making it into a real band with real band members.
11:00And if I'm able to find people who think about this kind of music genre somewhat similarly like I do and we will get well together, then I think that that will be the moment when hell will break loose.
11:16I want to say thank you for all of you who like what Kaalamo does and who like Kaalamo's music.
11:26It really warms my blackened heart to receive your messages, your likes and comments.
11:32So thank you and stay tuned.
