00:00Labour MP Emma Foody has spoken strongly against the state of bus services in her constituency of Cramlin Inn and Killingworth, describing them as unreliable and inaccessible.
00:11Her comments come after the results of her big bus survey, which gathered feedback from hundreds of residents across North Tyneside, Northumberland and Newcastle.
00:20The survey revealed widespread frustration with local buses, with many people saying services don't run where or when they need them and are often difficult to access.
00:31Speaking in the House of Commons, Ms Foody called on the Government to ensure the upcoming bus services bill puts passengers, in her words, back in the driving seat.
00:40She highlighted that many villages and towns in her area rely heavily on buses yet the current system fails to meet their needs.
00:47In response, Leader of the House Lucy Powell welcomed the survey results and agreed that communities need better, more reliable transport.
00:55She said the new bus services bill would give local areas the power to control routes, timetables and fares and would also allow councils to create their own publicly run bus companies.
01:05Powell pointed to the success of Manchester's Bay Network, where passenger numbers have risen by 5% and service reliability has improved since the city took control of its bus system.
01:15The upcoming legislation aims to protect essential routes, especially in rural and deprived areas, from being withdrawn without a proper review of how they serve the community.
01:25It also removes a long-standing ban on local authorities, establishing their own bus communities, marking a significant shift in how public transport could be managed across the country.
01:36Following the exchange, Emma Foody said she was pleased so many people had shared their experiences and hoped the new powers would lead to real improvements.
