00:007 Mile Road in Detroit.
00:11One of the most dangerous no-go zones in the USA.
00:15Those who live or dare to come here are playing with their lives.
00:19Ruled by the 7 Mile Bloods.
00:22One of the most notorious gangs in the city.
00:24You can't buy your way to the top.
00:26I mean it just comes with the respect you get in the street.
00:29Drug dealers, hustlers, killers and thieves, prepared to do whatever it takes to defend
00:35their territory.
00:36Killing, robbing, homicides like a 24-7, 365 deal.
00:41Pursued by bounty hunters who hound them down and put their lives on the line every day.
00:46There's been a lot of execution styles lately in the head two times.
00:50From Detroit's no-go zone, death is the main escape route.
00:55Once you in, it ain't no coming out.
01:25Detroit, Motown.
01:36Once the engine that powered the American dream.
01:39But while the wealthier people escaped to the suburbs, the bitter reality inside the
01:44Motor City became all too apparent.
01:50The former heartland of the U.S. automobile industry is teetering on the edge of an abyss.
01:57Poverty, crime, decay.
02:03For years, Detroit has been considered one of the most dangerous cities in the USA.
02:08And especially infamous is 7 Mile Road.
02:15This is an area so tough that even the police only dare tread during the day.
02:19The violent crime rate is five times higher than in the rest of the country.
02:24In 2018, over 13,000 crimes were reported.
02:28Many more occurred.
02:307 Mile in particular is the front line for the bloody territorial battles that brutally
02:35define this no-go zone.
02:41Detroit is located directly on the Canadian border in the U.S. state of Michigan.
02:46The infamous 7 Mile Road stretches from one end of the city to the other.
02:54On the west side, the law of the 7 Mile Bloods is in full force.
02:58It's one of the city's deadliest gangs.
03:01Almost no one knows the true identity of the main members.
03:07Especially not this man.
03:08Gang leader, Money.
03:09I'm a 7 Mile Blood.
03:10I joined the gang.
03:11It's more like, yeah, a family thing.
03:15I come from a long line of bloods.
03:17Our territory, we have all the 7 Miles on the west side.
03:25Today, boss Money has gathered together his closest capos in confidants.
03:32One of them is Moe, boss's right hand man and the guy who does the rough work.
03:36who does the rough work.
03:42And under the Jason mask, Meech, the gang's street dealer.
03:50For over 10 years, they've been controlling
03:52the drug trade with an iron fist.
03:54Anyone who gets in their way usually gets shot.
03:58Oh, this crack.
04:03Crack cocaine.
04:05All together, that's about a little under half a key.
04:08People would die for this.
04:10You wouldn't walk around with this on the street.
04:14No, hell no.
04:18Main source of income, crack.
04:21Another word for cocaine mixed with baking powder and water
04:24and then boiled up.
04:26Every month, money sells a ketogram.
04:28Street value, $40,000.
04:32I would give this to a couple of my guys in the street.
04:36The drug game here is extremely dangerous.
04:39You got to worry about the trackers, the stick-up kids,
04:42the police.
04:44I mean, just the people who just don't want to see you shine.
04:49It comes from all angles.
04:50Your best friend will kill you in this game.
04:53His man for the dirty work, right-hand man Moe.
05:00I should just over the king, so.
05:08I don't go out.
05:09I handle my business, and I back out the way
05:11for the most part.
05:12But like I say, keep you strapped.
05:15That's the best way to protect yourself.
05:17A bloody territorial war keeps the gang in turmoil.
05:20To keep their rivals in check, boss money
05:23needs a steady flow of new weapons.
05:27Meanwhile, right-hand man Moe heads over
05:30to the gang's dealer, a ration of crack in his pocket.
05:36Even though crack saw its destructive heyday in the 80s,
05:40there are still plenty of users here.
05:42And it remains the most lucrative street drug
05:44in Detroit.
05:46Poverty and a lack of prospects drive one in six people
05:49into drug addiction.
05:51Besides crack, heroin, and cocaine,
05:54the market is flooded with opioids.
05:56And only the strongest of painkillers
05:58can kill the pain that the Seven Mile Road deals.
06:06Drugs and turf wars are part of daily life on Seven Mile.
06:10Bloods member Moe has to be very cautious about which route
06:14he takes when running an errand.
06:16One wrong turn, and it could mean his life.
06:22Now, you see right here, this is the cutoff
06:25line for the territory.
06:26You got that side, this side.
06:29You know what I mean?
06:30This is where it is.
06:31When somebody from the rival side comes, then, yeah,
06:34it's automatic problems.
06:35They either can get, you know, a fight, a breakout,
06:37shooting a breakout, stabbing, anything.
06:39But it's most definite, definite problems
06:43coming across the territorial line.
06:46Which is why the gang wants to stock up on weapons.
06:50Defending their turf has top priority.
06:53Outsiders often don't know for sure which
06:55area they're going through.
06:57It's gotten too risky for the gangs
06:58to make markings like graffiti.
07:08As far as the graffiti, nobody, the gangs and everything,
07:11we don't really do graffiti around here no more.
07:13The graffiti part about it is old.
07:14You can tell, like I said, obviously,
07:16what color they got on.
07:17If they have a certain color, you
07:19catch them giving handshakes, you know,
07:21with their homeboys to identify what crew they're in.
07:23And a lot of the dumb ones, they get online
07:25and they name their gang.
07:27And then they put their name after their gang online.
07:29And that'd be their handle for their social media
07:31and shit like that.
07:33So it's easier for the police to recognize you.
07:38Authorities estimate that about 100 different gangs control
07:41the streets of Detroit.
07:43Countless videos of shootouts and people posing with weapons
07:47are posted on the internet.
07:49There, the gangs brag about what they've done.
07:51And that's exactly what brought down four members
07:53of the Seven Mile Bloods.
07:55After they posted their hit lists on social media,
07:58the police were able to track them down and lock them up.
08:08For gang member Mo, it's a warning
08:10to behave as inconspicuously as possible.
08:13His motto, if they don't know your face,
08:16they don't look for your face.
08:19In the neighborhood, there's not too many police
08:20because they fear for their safety too.
08:22People shoot at the police and whatnot.
08:24Now you got like the new generation,
08:26they're all drugged out to the fullest.
08:29So they're like zombies.
08:30So the killing is just reckless.
08:32It's a bad deal around here.
08:34It's bad, it's bad.
08:35So yeah, killing, robbing, homicides,
08:38like a 24-7, 365 deal.
08:41For the police, every assignment is a risk,
08:44which is why bounty hunters are often used
08:47to go after criminals.
08:49A special unit of bounty hunters prepares
08:51for their next assignment on the outskirts of downtown.
08:57The team is made up of four men,
08:59former elite special forces, police officers,
09:02and mercenaries.
09:04This guy's about 26.
09:06Tommy Deepone leads the unit.
09:08So far, he's arrested over 2,500 criminals.
09:12I'm gonna park outside.
09:13Oh, I know what we're driving, what we're doing.
09:16You got your baton, you got your spray?
09:18I do.
09:18Both vests?
09:19Yeah.
09:20All right, let's gear up.
09:21Chicken guns?
09:22Yeah, better go arm.
09:25Many ordinary citizens won't leave their homes anymore
09:28without a weapon.
09:29Over 114,000 people have concealed carry permits
09:33in the Detroit metropolitan region,
09:36but the actual numbers are much higher.
09:42There's been a lot of drug-related,
09:45gang-related shootings,
09:46and so Detroit PD's been doing their best
09:49to be proactive with their gang units,
09:51but you can't get ahead of it fast enough.
09:54For 20 years now, Tommy and his partner, Popeye,
09:57have been hunting down criminals.
10:00At the top of their list, gang members.
10:03Today, they're after a big fish.
10:06So it's one of those cases
10:08where you get a tip every once in a while.
10:09It's a guy out on Bond.
10:12For a pretty serious offense,
10:13it was a large amount of cocaine and weapons charge.
10:17It's pretty much total gang culture.
10:19There's some locals,
10:20but Crips and Bloods, don't forget,
10:21still kind of rule the lay of the land everywhere.
10:26How much you're buying on that one?
10:2750,000.
10:28Wow.
10:30$50,000 prize money.
10:33The first clues lead the hunters
10:35straight into the no-go zone,
10:37and who knows which criminals
10:39the bounty hunters might encounter.
10:45Seven mile.
10:46That's kind of like the hot, targeted red zone right now,
10:49and there's been a lot of execution styles lately
10:51in the head two times.
10:53So it's, they're not playing.
10:56When somebody says that they're gonna come and kill somebody,
10:59we used to laugh about it 10, 12 years ago.
11:01Now they are coming to kill somebody.
11:03You're taking it serious.
11:04And unfortunately, a lot of the-
11:06Back to the right.
11:08People with the guns, the shooters, are juveniles.
11:12The bounty hunters drive
11:13to the criminal's last known address, standard procedure.
11:17They're counting on tips about his current hangout.
11:20If arrested, fugitive could face
11:22eight to 10 years in prison.
11:28The hunters are also on the lookout
11:30for smaller fish in this pond.
11:33In his 50 years as a bounty hunter,
11:35Popeye, the veteran of the troupe,
11:37has been attacked several times.
11:44I think the worst one I had was out in Arizona.
11:46We was out there when I got shot in the back.
11:48I was down for about two years.
11:50Then of course, I've been stabbed
11:52and almost lost all my fingers.
11:54They had to reattach everything.
11:56Then I got hit with a bar stool and a blunt.
12:00Then I got hit with a bar stool
12:01and a bar trying to arrest a guy.
12:04I mean, it's pretty dangerous, but I like it.
12:07I really do.
12:10As they thought, no new tips.
12:12But the hunters have to exhaust all their options.
12:18Let's keep moving.
12:23They hope to get more information
12:25from the sister of the wanted drug and weapons dealer.
12:28So they set off in her direction, despite the risk.
12:38Because about 32% of all those living along Seven Mile
12:42live below the poverty line.
12:44For many of them, the way to get easy money
12:46is by engaging in any manner of illegal activities.
12:54Like for right-hand man Mo,
12:56he delivers the weekly ration of drugs
12:58to the dealer of the gang.
13:08Drug dealer, Meech, supplies countless customers
13:11in the no-go zone with new merchandise.
13:13His specialty, crack, smokeable cocaine.
13:17Cheap to produce and a quick high.
13:27You know what I'm saying?
13:28I always deliver top quality.
13:31I'll make a couple of downs,
13:32we're gonna make a couple of 20s.
13:35Crack and convenient $10 rocks.
13:38The stuff is so cheap
13:39that practically everyone can afford it.
13:42Meech has no reservations about selling it
13:44because if he didn't,
13:46he'd be living on the streets himself.
13:53You can always choose.
13:54You wanna be broke, you wanna be starving,
13:57or you wanna get you some affiliations.
14:01I've never seen nobody
14:06do anything without any help.
14:08And that's what these people around me,
14:11they have allowed me to always eat.
14:14So, you know what I'm saying?
14:15Yeah, you can choose.
14:17It's a choice, you know what I'm saying?
14:19For me, it was an easy choice.
14:21You know what I'm saying?
14:21It wasn't like nobody made me do anything.
14:23It was like I wanted to get some money.
14:26The two have known each other since they were kids.
14:29They grew up together.
14:30While Mo makes his way to the next deal,
14:33drug dealer Meech gets his business going.
14:40Basically, my blow phone, my weed phone,
14:45and just me phone.
14:47My phone ain't been off in five years.
14:50It ain't never not been answered.
15:01His territory, everything along Seven Mile.
15:07Hello?
15:12Hello?
15:15I'm about to pull a ride.
15:16Nah, meet me up here.
15:19The dealer sells mainly to regular customers.
15:22His route takes him through the territory of a rival gang.
15:25If he steps over the line,
15:27he'll face some hard consequences.
15:31This neighborhood notorious for setting the house on fire.
15:34That's why I don't hustle around here.
15:37That was the first time.
15:40Second time, they come in to shoot you and kill you.
15:42Keep you dope.
15:44The jobs that was here, they ain't here.
15:47Everything's fucked up now.
15:48The culture is fucked up.
15:49The dope gang used to be our,
15:53but it didn't change.
15:56Those three familiar bedfellows.
15:58Unemployment, crime, and decay.
16:01In many places, Detroit resembles a ghost town.
16:04Once home to the U.S. automobile industry.
16:07Major companies like Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors.
16:12Since the economic and financial crisis,
16:14a lot of these factories have been empty.
16:17The result, huge layoffs.
16:20Entire sectors of the economy moved out,
16:22and tax revenues have fallen to all time lows.
16:25All that's left of the American dream is a living nightmare.
16:32Extreme poverty prevails on Seven Mile.
16:36Countless families can't make it without food donations.
16:40Steady jobs are rare.
16:42Although some big companies have returned,
16:45their days are over.
16:53Dealer Meech has found his way to earn money here.
16:56Sell drugs.
16:58His first customer is already waiting.
17:02I keep the big three.
17:05That's heroin, that's coke, that's crack.
17:07And I just provide that service.
17:09We don't think this lifestyle we live in is illegal.
17:12We don't, you know, this is natural to me.
17:15A transfer point, a gas station on the west end of Seven Mile.
17:19At the gas station.
17:25Giddy, what up, dawg?
17:30The gas stations are among the most dangerous spots
17:33along Seven Mile.
17:41Armed robberies, blackmail,
17:44and random shootings between gangs.
17:47Innocent people often get caught between the fronts.
17:50Anyone could be a victim, especially at night.
17:58For the people who live along Seven Mile,
18:01it's all just part of their unforgiving daily life.
18:05Also for Michael, an ex-gang member.
18:08He's lived in the no-go zone since he was born.
18:15Gang wars flare up every week.
18:18Countless people have already lost family members
18:21or friends in these struggles.
18:25For the station attendants,
18:27all customers are suspicious at first.
18:30In the no-go zone,
18:32they prefer to be protected by bulletproof glass.
18:35Michael could also be a criminal or a gang member.
18:39It's very necessary, you know, anything can happen.
18:42Someone could come in here, you know,
18:44try to reach over there,
18:46or someone come in here armed,
18:48try to rob the store, which they ain't worried about that.
18:51But, you know, it's just basically safety purposes.
18:59A lot of hot spots along Seven Mile
19:01have their own special names.
19:03Like Michael's, he lives in the so-called Red Zone.
19:13The area is located in the northeast corner
19:16with a zip code 48205,
19:19right between Seven and Eight Mile.
19:24The Red Zone is so dangerous
19:26that some of the people who live there
19:28call it the Red Zone.
19:30It's so dangerous that some of the people who live there
19:33call it the War Zone,
19:35because the Seven Mile Bloods
19:37have also got their deadly finger in the pie.
19:43The main problem on this area is gangs.
19:47You know, everybody want to be a gangbanger, you know.
19:53So that creates a lot of violence, you know.
19:56Want to be a blood.
19:59With no hope for the future in Detroit,
20:02young people are driven onto the streets
20:05and directly into the hands of the waiting gangs.
20:08Michael was also unable to escape their allure.
20:12The temptation for quick cash got the better of him.
20:15It was the birth of his youngest son that woke him up.
20:20I didn't know how to make a living.
20:23From the time I was 16 to the time I was 18,
20:26I was, you know, running the streets, selling drugs, you know.
20:30By the time I was 18, that changed.
20:34You know, I got locked up one time,
20:37wanting to stay free, stay alive,
20:39because anything you go out here thinking you're going to hustle
20:43and a person kill you, over fucking 20 bucks, you know.
20:47Just because they don't care about nothing.
20:50Michael spent more than one year in prison.
20:53Since then, he earns a lot less money working shifts
20:57than he did as a drug dealer.
20:59He wants to show his children
21:01that there's another way besides gangs and violence.
21:07The kids, it's very important, you know.
21:11You want the kids to grow up to do the right thing, you know.
21:15Get your education,
21:17because that's the most important thing in this world, is education.
21:21Without that, you don't have any knowledge,
21:24you don't know nothing, then you're pretty much screwed.
21:27A good education is expensive.
21:30$11,000 for one year at a private school.
21:34And government alternatives?
21:36Not many of those around anymore.
21:39For a long time now, Detroit has been one of the largest
21:42deprived metropolitan areas in the United States.
21:45In the last 15 years,
21:47about 2 thirds of all public schools have been closed.
21:51The reason?
21:52The collapse of the economy has had a major impact
21:55on the size of the population.
21:57Once the richest city in the country,
22:00it is now among the poorest.
22:02As a result, around 60% of all residents
22:06are believed to be illiterate.
22:09Just a few street corners away,
22:11in a temporary shelter belonging to the Seven Mile Bloods,
22:15the gang's plans for the future are taking shape.
22:20Gang leader Money has just done some business with a gun dealer.
22:24The gang will finally get some new weapons.
22:27After the cash is exchanged,
22:29the gun transfer takes place anonymously
22:32in one of the city's many stash houses.
22:42Every stash spot has got to have some difference.
22:44You don't keep everything in the same spot.
22:46I keep a stash spot for the money,
22:48keep a stash spot for the different drugs.
22:50You never keep the drugs and the money in the same spot.
22:52And I'll never keep all my drugs in the same spot.
22:57For such a special assignment,
22:59Boss Money only lets one man in the gang do the work,
23:02his right-hand man, Moe.
23:07Almost a third of all houses in the city are empty
23:10because only about 670,000 people still live in Detroit.
23:14In its heyday, there were over 2 million.
23:17For gangs and criminals,
23:19the abandoned houses are the perfect stash for drugs and guns,
23:23or to hide a body.
23:33And while the wealthier residents of Detroit
23:35have fled to the suburbs outside the city,
23:37this so-called white flight
23:39means that of those remaining in the decaying inner city,
23:42almost 80% are African Americans.
23:48Including Moe,
23:50the right-hand man of the Seven Mile Blood Leader,
23:52who grew up here.
23:54He earned his status over the course of many ruthless years.
23:59There's definitely different ranks in the gang.
24:01You know, you got the low level,
24:03it's like pawns on the chessboard, you know what I'm saying?
24:06They're just expendable guys, they're just around,
24:09you know, like your army front men.
24:11Then you got your regular generals,
24:13your level two generals, then your highest,
24:15you got your gang chief, you know what I'm saying?
24:17They pretty much call all the shots.
24:19I'm well-connected, I'm respected with everybody,
24:21so I can move freely how I want to.
24:23You know what I'm saying?
24:25I'm well-connected, I'm respected with everybody,
24:27so I can move freely how I want to.
24:29You know what I mean?
24:31So I don't really have no certain tie to my own entity,
24:33you know what I mean?
24:35I got my own situation going on,
24:37so people respect me and they know me, you know?
24:39Moe is getting ready for his next mission,
24:41picking up the gun delivery.
24:43And he never leaves his house without one of his own.
24:49Yeah, it's definitely best to protect yourself
24:51when you come do this.
24:53You know?
24:55Like they say, don't bring a knife to a gunfight.
24:57So shootouts with all these officers,
24:59shootouts with other gang members,
25:01shootouts with other crews.
25:03Yeah, it's a lot, you know?
25:05Only with the requisite firepower
25:07can they continue to dominate their territory
25:09and the other gangs,
25:11because the touch paper might light at any moment.
25:18Meanwhile, the bounty hunters
25:20have almost reached their destination.
25:23Their search leads them to the border area
25:25of the Seven Mile Bloods,
25:27where the sister of the wanted drug and weapons dealer
25:29allegedly lives.
25:31But here, lower-ranking gang members
25:33might cross their path.
25:45Once at the house,
25:47they look for clues to lead them to their target.
25:50Getting out of the car
25:52is not an option at the moment.
25:54The danger is too great
25:56that the bounty hunters will be noticed by neighbors.
25:58Here, the team can never know
26:00who's a friend and who's an enemy.
26:08For the most part,
26:10nobody wants to get involved
26:12because of the backlash
26:14and social media
26:16and the wildfire
26:18and how it can go like that.
26:20If they are found out to have assisted,
26:22it could be
26:24very serious consequences for them,
26:26so they're more apt
26:28probably not to say anything.
26:30The house appears to be empty.
26:32It's getting too risky
26:34for the bounty hunters here.
26:36They abort the mission
26:38and disappear from the scene.
26:45During a short break,
26:48the neighbor from before reappears.
26:56He's one of the good guys
26:58and wants to help the team.
27:00There was two doors down
27:02to your right
27:04was the way you were standing in there.
27:06No, but it's just Rhonda
27:08and her brother live there now.
27:10Well, that covers that up good.
27:12That keeps us from sitting out there
27:14bugging, worrying the neighborhood,
27:16sitting there wasting time, burning daylight.
27:18A setback.
27:20The wanted man is not at his sister's house.
27:22There you go, brother.
27:24That's my cell. Shoot me if you would.
27:26Text me your cell.
27:28I've never done that before.
27:30Of course, if you see him,
27:32shoot me a text, I'll take a picture
27:34and shoot that to you.
27:36The bounty hunters have informants
27:38all over the city.
27:40For a hot tip with a successful outcome,
27:42they'll pay up to $1,000.
27:44Right now, they're waiting for some feedback
27:46from their most important contact.
27:48Only a few street corners away,
27:50drug dealer Meech is making his deal
27:52at a gas station on 7 Mile.
27:58Hop in, hop in, hop in.
28:24Two rocks for $20.
28:26One after the other,
28:28dealer Meech makes the deliveries
28:30to his regular customers.
28:32So far, he's collected about $250.
28:34He considers the danger
28:36that one of the junkies will blow his cover
28:38to be low.
28:40I don't really do the shady spots
28:42and stuff like that.
28:44I'll pull up real quick.
28:46I know the general area
28:48that I'm pulling up.
28:50I pretty much, everything that I'm pulling up,
28:52I'm pulling up on the street.
28:54I pull up, I pretty much,
28:56everything's familiar, so you know,
28:58you see some faces you don't see,
29:00some faces you see,
29:02and they don't look right gone head.
29:04Some people stick out in this neighborhood.
29:06I can smell that type of shit.
29:14I'll be there in a minute.
29:18He's careful.
29:20He only gives his number to loyal friends
29:22and helpers of the gang.
29:32Even with just small quantities,
29:34Meech can take in
29:36up to $1,500 a day.
29:38Around here,
29:40only dealers make that much money.
29:42Or prostitutes.
29:46A few blocks away,
29:48directly next to Seven Mile is Grand River Avenue.
29:52A favorite spot
29:54where love is for sale.
29:56Without an education or a high school diploma,
29:58many women see only one option
30:00to make money.
30:02Walk the streets.
30:04Among them is Star,
30:0624 years old.
30:10Star has been walking the streets
30:12almost every day for the past five years.
30:14These days,
30:16she only has one goal.
30:18Make as much money as possible.
30:22You know,
30:24living out here,
30:26you just gotta know how to survive.
30:28You know,
30:30some people base their life on love,
30:32some people base their life on surviving.
30:34You know,
30:36it's hard, but you just do it.
30:38At night,
30:40it's even more dangerous on the streets.
30:42Especially at the spots
30:44along the no-go zone.
30:46If it's a rough night,
30:48I go out about 10.
30:50You know what I'm saying?
30:52Try to hustle up on some, you know?
30:54But other than that,
30:56try to keep my regulars.
30:58You know?
31:00That's how I get guaranteed.
31:02Shit, I got kids out here.
31:04I gotta make sure
31:06I can send money home, you know?
31:08Trying to see two, three thousand a day.
31:10A thousand a day.
31:12You know,
31:14two, three thousand a day.
31:16A thousand a day, at least.
31:18And on a low day.
31:20Because if it's not that,
31:22then what else is it?
31:24Star hustles without a pimp.
31:26As a single mother,
31:28she's out on her own.
31:30The streets have their own laws.
31:32And everyone knows the unofficial rulers
31:34of Seven Mile.
31:38It's the bloods, really.
31:40Who, you know,
31:42they running shit.
31:44You know, like, they...
31:46They the top dog,
31:48when I say on top, you know what I'm saying?
31:50They out here, they getting off.
31:52You know?
31:54Anyone who messes with a gang
31:56is not likely to survive the encounter.
31:58Even Star had to learn
32:00this the hard way.
32:02The tattoo on her upper arm,
32:04Do It For Thrill, is a tribute
32:06to her murdered brother.
32:12He was a blood, you know.
32:14He killed him and left his body
32:16by a dumpster in a car.
32:18They tried to make it seem like he killed himself.
32:20They know he ain't killed.
32:22He had grazed his head.
32:24And he had
32:26got shot in the chest.
32:28Left him in a car
32:30and pulled up to, like, an abandoned dumpster.
32:32He got set up
32:34by his homeboy.
32:36That shit real out here, for real.
32:38People get killed every day.
32:40All over.
32:42You know what I'm saying?
32:44It ain't just us.
32:46But shit, it's rough out here, for real.
32:48It's like fucking war zones
32:50in some places.
32:52Innocent people getting killed for no reason.
32:54People like me getting killed
32:56for no reason.
32:58They just found a girl's body,
33:00naked as fuck, in Miller Street.
33:02In her job, she never knows
33:04what night might be her last.
33:06She can't count on protection
33:08from the streets.
33:10Shit.
33:12If a nigga want to rob you,
33:14take your money
33:16because niggas is poor out here.
33:18Shit, what the fuck can you do?
33:20Yeah, it's been some
33:22shit. Niggas done robbed me,
33:24snatched me up, dropped me off,
33:26set me up.
33:28All that shit.
33:30The quick money lets her
33:32forget about the potential consequences.
33:34Assault, robbery,
33:36and more recently, murder.
33:38The police believe a serial murderer
33:40is on the loose.
33:42His prey of choice?
33:44Prostitutes.
33:46But Starr keeps going back to the street.
33:52Meanwhile, the bounty hunters are back out.
33:54They're still waiting for a tip
33:56from their informants.
34:06For gang member Moe,
34:08it's time to get going.
34:10His mission? To pick up the gang's
34:12long-awaited weapons shipment.
34:18Everyone's waiting for darkness to fall
34:20in one of the most dangerous
34:22cities in the USA.
34:26As night descends,
34:28the entire length of Seven Mile
34:30is transformed into a deadly no-go zone.
34:32The risk of being murdered
34:34in Detroit is 11 times
34:36higher than in New York City.
34:38An endless gang war
34:40holds the city in its clutches.
34:42Once police show up,
34:44the showdown is usually
34:46already over.
34:50The residents have but one chance
34:52to survive the night.
34:54Don't leave the house after dark.
34:56Michael also stays within his
34:58own four walls.
35:04You see it on the news every day.
35:06I don't think there's a day that
35:08go by that I turn on the news
35:10and it doesn't say anything about
35:12someone innocent getting hurt
35:14or just, you know, someone getting
35:16shot, period, you know.
35:18We just had a holiday.
35:20In that one day,
35:22we had over
35:2420 people killed.
35:26It's a lot of people.
35:28It's a lot of people.
35:30It's a lot of people.
35:32We had over
35:3420 shootings.
35:36Shootings and crime?
35:38Nothing new to him.
35:40Michael's house is positioned
35:42directly in the death zone.
35:44I definitely want to move
35:46out of Detroit, out of the red zone.
35:48It's just going to take me
35:50working my ass off to do it.
35:54His dream? A new home
35:56for his children.
35:58So the same fate does not befall
36:00them, like many others here,
36:02joining a gang
36:04or selling their body.
36:06On the other
36:08side of Seven Mile, the street walker's
36:10business is picking up.
36:16Anyone
36:18who walks the streets here at night
36:20is playing with their life.
36:22But Star
36:24sees no other way out.
36:26The brutal conditions of
36:28life in Detroit
36:30have stolen her dreams.
36:40I was 17.
36:44My mom, like I said, she wasn't around.
36:46I was with my grandparents.
36:48We needed money and I was
36:50out here. I fell
36:52in love with this dude
36:54and he introduced me to the fast life.
36:56I was happy for him because I touched bands with him.
36:58I touched money, real money with him.
37:00But shit, he got me out here
37:02with this hustle. Once you in,
37:04it ain't no coming out.
37:06It ain't no getting out of this.
37:08I mean, some people do. Some people
37:10get married, live that good life.
37:12But people like
37:14me don't get it that sweet.
37:16You gotta work.
37:20Prostitution is
37:22illegal in the state of Michigan.
37:24If Star is caught, she could face
37:26a $500 fine and
37:2893 days in jail.
37:32I'm not trying to get
37:34locked up and they'd be out here rolling
37:36all up and down here.
37:38All up and down
37:40Grand River. I'm not trying
37:42to get popped or
37:44knocked off. I got warrants
37:46out here. I'm not trying to get arrested.
37:48I don't need shit on my record.
37:50But females out here, they set you up.
37:52On the street,
37:54there's one thing besides the
37:56police that can also be a danger for Star.
37:58Other prostitutes.
38:00The women
38:02fight fiercely for their territory.
38:04With knives
38:06or even guns.
38:14It's tense with the other prostitute.
38:16Star decides to back off and keep safe.
38:22A warning shot.
38:24Just one of many.
38:26In the last
38:28five years, there have been
38:30more than 1,500 shootings.
38:32Over 700 people
38:34lost their lives.
38:38Gang member Mo
38:40always has his gun at hand.
38:42A drug dealer has left
38:44the gang's latest delivery in one of the
38:46enclaves.
38:48A drug dealer has left the gang's
38:50latest delivery in one of the empty stash
38:52houses.
39:02Before I go in
39:04somewhere, somebody's house, like I said,
39:06I definitely got my artillery. I got my gun
39:08that's already loaded. One in the chamber
39:10ready to go. It's like it's in a band of house.
39:12You know, it's used for stash.
39:14So like I said, it's really, it's under
39:16a 50% safety chance going in
39:18them. Mo can never
39:20be certain if anyone is still hiding
39:22in the house.
39:24Or if the gun dealer is planning to ambush him.
39:26He simply has to risk it.
39:40Not so far away from gang member Mo,
39:42the bounty hunters are still looking for the
39:44wanted drug and weapons dealer.
39:46Then...
39:52Bad boys, is this Tommy D?
39:56Yes, we are.
40:00It's a tip.
40:02Okay, thank you.
40:04Leader Tommy finally gets
40:06a tip from his informant.
40:08It seems the man they're looking for is
40:10hiding out in an abandoned house.
40:14Alright.
40:18Alright, so we got the tip, right?
40:20Yeah, it's right here. So we'll just go down the street.
40:22Check it out. Let's check the front
40:24first. Check for any doors or any loose
40:26wood on the windows.
40:28See if we can get a peek inside and then
40:30if there's nothing in the front, let's get around the back.
40:32Because that's most likely where they're going to gain entrance
40:34into the building. Alright, watch your arse.
40:36The leads are all
40:38starting to come together.
40:40There's a light on inside the empty
40:42house.
40:44Somebody's definitely been in and out of there.
40:48If Tommy and his team find the criminals
40:50here, they stand to earn
40:52a bounty of $50,000.
40:58In the meantime,
41:00the prostitute's star has found a new
41:02street.
41:04The prostitute's star has found a new street corner
41:06and hopes there won't be any
41:08shootings here tonight.
41:16That shit is
41:18territorial. You know, women don't play about
41:20they spot out here. So shit,
41:22if they used to be in out here and most of these
41:24hoes out here, they got pimps and shit.
41:26You know what I'm saying?
41:28So if they feel like
41:30it's a problem, they're going to step or they're going to send
41:32a pimp. And I'm a female by myself.
41:34You know what I'm saying? So I'll be having to move around
41:36fast, you know?
41:38And she needs the money.
41:40She still hasn't been able to
41:42scrape together enough to cover her expenses
41:44this month. Star charges
41:46$200 an hour,
41:48$600 for half the night.
41:54After over one hour,
41:56an interested trick shows up.
41:58Finally, a chance to earn some money.
42:02They seem to have come to an agreement.
42:04But in a city like Detroit,
42:06Star can never be too sure
42:08about who she's getting in the car with.
42:18A few corners away,
42:20the bounty hunters are closer to their target
42:22than they've ever been.
42:24They're following a hot tip about the wanted dealer
42:26and it's taking them
42:28straight to the police.
42:30It's secured.
42:32Alright.
42:34It's empty.
42:40Was the informant wrong?
42:42The house seems sealed off.
42:44Except
42:48for a door to the basement.
43:00I think they're getting in.
43:18Bail enforcement, anybody in there?
43:20Bad boys bail.
43:22Show your hands.
43:30Let's go.
43:42But the operation proves fruitless.
43:44Nothing.
43:46No trace of the wanted dealer.
43:48The men had been hoping for more.
43:52The basement and everything was clear.
43:54Some duct tape.
43:56Now it's clear.
43:58We thought we had the building that was secured
44:00but we get in there and we find a rat hole
44:02and we go in there and thought for sure somebody would be in there
44:04but no one's in there so again
44:06the chase continues.
44:08There's nothing left for them to do
44:10but wait for a new tip.
44:12Which could come tonight
44:14or tomorrow.
44:16Then they can continue their hunt.
44:18At the same time,
44:20gang member Mo also finds himself
44:22in an abandoned house.
44:24His mission?
44:26Pick up the gun delivery for the gang.
44:38A few guns.
44:40Inside the bag.
44:42Serial number scratched off the weapons.
44:44Weapons are never registered.
44:46We gotta handle some situations with our enemies
44:48with the rest of them, the rival crews
44:51Mission accomplished.
44:53The new weapons will make sure the gang
44:55can continue to dominate their territory.
44:59At the current hideout of the Seven Mile Bloods
45:01Boss Money and the rest of the gang
45:03wait for the fresh delivery.
45:05Because guns
45:07mean power.
45:14The latest in their arsenal?
45:16The Beretta M9.
45:18It's got handguns like the 9mm revolver.
45:20Above all, light
45:22and easy to hide.
45:24A pistol like that costs about $100
45:26in the black market.
45:32I mean money can't
45:34you can't buy your way to the top.
45:36I mean it just comes with
45:38the respect you get in the street.
45:40I know how to do some things out here.
45:42Because you gotta protect your name.
45:44In the no-go zone
45:46along Seven Mile in Detroit
45:48it's the survival of the fittest.
45:50Each and every day.
45:52Every day and night.
46:00Prostitute Star
46:02is back on the street.
46:04She's waiting for more tricks
46:06in the hopes that at least her children
46:08will have a better life.
46:14My goal is to move.
46:16To get away from all this shit.
46:18I just gotta stack enough money
46:20to be able to take my babies away.
46:22I'm not there yet but I'm almost there.
46:24Gang leader Money
46:26can imagine only one
46:28direction for himself and the gang.
46:30Keep getting bigger
46:32and more powerful.
46:34His solution is simple.
46:36The money has the power.
46:38Because the money you can do what you want.
46:40So let's just do this.
46:42Other gangsters
46:44try to get out of this mess
46:46including Mo.
46:48But he knows there's no escape
46:50from the downward spiral.
46:52It's inevitable.
46:54Something negative is gonna happen.
46:56I keep doing this.
46:58I got a family, kids, I wanna see them.
47:00But for right now we don't really think that far
47:02about the future. It's like a day to day thing.
47:04Because anyone who lives here
47:06learns and learns quickly.
47:08No one can escape their fate.
47:10They can only
47:12play the game.
47:14The bounty hunters
47:16are back on the prowl.
47:18The most important thing about their work?
47:20Never lose your courage.
47:22It's not always easy but you know
47:24we gotta do what we gotta do to keep the business
47:26going and bring back the fugitives
47:28and the people on the run
47:30and then try to be the keepers of the light, right?
