Aberdeen Stun Celtic in Scottish Cup Final | Is Celtic's Dominance Harming Scottish Football? | PLZ Soccer
🎙️ Peter Martin, Alan Rough, Alison McConnell, and Tam McManus reflect on a stunning day for the Dons, discuss Celtic’s flat performance, and ask the big question: is Celtic’s ongoing dominance damaging for Scottish football?
🏆 Aberdeen’s win marks their first major trophy in 35 years, and the panel agrees: this is a massive moment not just for the club but for the game in Scotland. Graeme Shinnie, Jimmy Thelin, and the Red Army delivered a tactical masterclass and stunning penalty shootout performance. Could this spark a shift in the Scottish football landscape?
💬 Brendan Rodgers urges Celtic fans to take a “bigger picture” view — but was his team’s complacency exposed? The show analyses his controversial substitutions, Celtic’s lack of cutting edge, and the consequences of failing to replace Kyogo in January.
The panel also discuss Rangers' looming managerial and ownership changes, Stuart Kettlewell's appointment as Kilmarnock's new manager, and the SPFL Playoff Final: Ross County vs Livingston.

00:00:00Welcome to Red TV here on PLZ Soccer, welcome to the football show, I'm Peter Martin, completely
00:00:15and utterly ashamed of myself, with Alan Ruff, Alison McConnell and the visionary that is
00:00:22Tam McManus in the post-match analysis of the Scottish Cup Final, where Aberdeen did
00:00:29indeed win the Cup Final, I don't think any of us expected them to win the Cup Final,
00:00:34I think we all thought it was going to be a Celtic win, but only one of us was daft
00:00:38enough to say, if Aberdeen win the Cup, I'll wear the Aberdeen top, and here it is, so
00:00:45congratulations Aberdeen, well and truly deserved, here's what's coming up.
00:00:51Stuart Gettlewell appointed Kilmarnock manager on two-year deal, Brendan Rodgers urges Celtic
00:00:56to look at bigger picture after Cup Final heartache, Jimmy Tillian believes Scottish
00:01:01Cup triumph gives Aberdeen belief, Ange Postekoglou brands talk on his Tottenham future weird
00:01:08after Europa League win.
00:01:13So lots to discuss on the programme today, hopefully you can give us your thoughts as
00:01:18well, there's a lot of people obviously who are going to be posting their comments on
00:01:25this, but I have to tell you Roffy, boy was it difficult to try and think of a shop that
00:01:30would sell an Aberdeen top in the actual central belt, I knew right after the Cup Final when
00:01:38the penalty was saved by Methoff, I actually looked and I thought to myself, everybody
00:01:44else is covering all the things and I'm just thinking, where the f*** am I going to get
00:01:48an Aberdeen top, am I going to have to drive up to the Granite City and buy one, I managed
00:01:56to get it in Hamilton, a great guy, he's a big Rangers fan, he's got a lovely retro,
00:02:05I think it's called Quarry Place, he's got a lovely retro shop there, and I spotted this
00:02:10and I thought, there you are, saved the day, pretty penny but it wasn't cheap, but the
00:02:15minute I put it on, the minute I put it on Alison I started to feel kind of an Aberdonian,
00:02:24so Roffy I gave you 34p two years ago, if you could give me that bang that would be
00:02:29great, and I was walking past the farm and I thought to myself, I might spend half an
00:02:34hour in there, I've got the socks, I've got the Aberdeen socks on,
00:02:40I actually, one of my mates, when I was up at Potaudry staying over for the weekend,
00:02:44one of my mates said to us, when you're on your way back down there's a game of Five
00:02:47Asides, and I said well I've only got my trainers with me, so I actually went into the Aberdeen
00:02:51shop and I thought to hell with it, I bought myself a pair of Aberdeen shorts and socks
00:02:56and I couldn't find the shorts, but I thought, listen I'm taking enough humiliation with
00:03:00the top for God's sake Roffy, I think we need to insist on a photograph, of what? A full
00:03:05photograph, of pants, socks, stuff, what do you think? It should be put out, it has to
00:03:10be put out there. I know, I know, well listen at least I'm doing it, I've put the top on
00:03:17which is tough enough for me to be honest with you, Hugh says it's a 2XL, shut it Hugh,
00:03:23it's a medium, but you have to stick by it Ali, if you look and you say I thought Celtic
00:03:29would cuff them for nothing, it didn't materialise, Aberdeen actually deserve great credit.
00:03:34They did, they did, I think their game plan was spot on, just wait and wait and wait,
00:03:40keep it tight, keep it 1-0, put on Morris, see what his pace does and then get themselves
00:03:46back in it and then I think they just sat, frustrated Celtic, I have to say I thought
00:03:50Celtic were flat, I thought they were flat all over the pitch from start to finish, I
00:03:55thought even when the goal went in and granted it's a scrappy own goal for the first goal
00:04:00of the game, I thought celebrations were fairly muted, I don't think you can take anything
00:04:05away from Aberdeen, I thought their fans were exceptional at Hampden, I thought they made
00:04:09loads of noise, brought lots of colour and I think when you see the celebrations and
00:04:13you see the open top bus parade yesterday and you see what it means to a generation
00:04:20who will never have seen, had that moment before, I think it's hard to begrudge it.
00:04:25Yeah, absolutely, I mean it was 100,000 fans there yesterday, you can see from some of
00:04:29the pictures in Aberdeen itself, when you get young kids who have never as you said
00:04:36sampled seeing Aberdeen win anything, that was absolutely fabulous but players, especially
00:04:41I felt Tam, for Graeme Sherry it means so much to him and so many other people who played
00:04:49for Aberdeen and the fans turned out in great numbers just to cheer them and that's something
00:04:53that hasn't happened since, I mean it's 35 years, 1990 for God's sake.
00:04:58Yeah, I think it's pretty refreshing for Scottish football, I really do, I think to see a club
00:05:02like Aberdeen who have been starved of success for such a long time to win it at Hampden,
00:05:06I don't think it's healthy that Celtic just win everything of the season, a part of me
00:05:11was quite glad that Aberdeen did win it and the celebrations after it, you see how much
00:05:16it means to people, Celtic would have been home just another treble, I think that was
00:05:20probably the way the players looked at it as well, the way they played and I agree with
00:05:26Arsene, I thought they were flat and poor the whole game and the substitutions were
00:05:30bizarre for me, for my manager, I thought when Aberdeen put Papa Guy on, I thought that
00:05:35changed the game, I thought Kevin Nisbet played up front and the Celtic back to centre-halves
00:05:40played 40 yards for Aberdeen's goal because they thought Kevin Nisbet's never going to
00:05:44run that way, when he came on a couple of times it didn't really come up, it didn't
00:05:48really do much but he just ran in behind Peter and that caused Celtic problems, I thought
00:05:55the manager played it perfectly, kept it tight for maybe a half, 60 minutes and then he put
00:06:01some pace on when the game opened up a wee bit and that caused Celtic problems and I
00:06:06thought that was the turning point, putting Papa Guy on because as I said he ran in behind
00:06:10and he caused Celtic problems but the Celtic substitutions for me, I didn't know why he
00:06:16didn't take Bernardo off, I thought I'd have took him off before Engles for a start,
00:06:19he took Ida off, I'd have kept him on for longer as well and I just thought the substitutions
00:06:25made Celtic weaker and Aberdeen's made them stronger and I thought that was why Aberdeen won the cup.
00:06:30Yeah, I'm going to talk, obviously get your thoughts on it Robbie as well but I've got to
00:06:34read out some of the messages because if you're going to wear this top you might as well get it
00:06:38in the neck Ali and Kaiser says I said on Friday we'd win and Tam you said I was on the glue,
00:06:46a quick apology to him, if I'm wearing this you might as well and a lot of people obviously,
00:06:55thanks to Greg Stott who's said I hope Peter is going full kit on the show, I've got most of it,
00:07:01I just couldn't find the pair of black Aberdeen shorts that I've got and Callum says Peter your
00:07:07face should be the same colour as your shirt because you predicted Celtic would win 4-0,
00:07:14with all due respect, I don't think I was the only one Ruffey who really kind of stuck his
00:07:20neck out there and looked at all the stats, looked at the evidence of the last four games,
00:07:25five games in fact and thought Aberdeen don't stand a catch chance in hell here.
00:07:30No, I think we all believed that obviously with the results and they weren't just easy results or
00:07:34hammerings and you have to deal with that, congratulations obviously to Aberdeen but I
00:07:40thought it was a poor final, poor, poor final. But does that matter? I know it doesn't matter
00:07:45the scale of things but I mean Celtic trying to win the game and Aberdeen not wanting to lose the
00:07:51game and I think it spoiled it a wee bit but as Alisson said for giving plus marks to attacking
00:07:58football you've got to give plus marks to organisation and that's what they did,
00:08:03they had a game plan, I remember Celtic doing it against Barcelona, do you remember when they came?
00:08:10Celtic had a game plan and they did exactly what Aberdeen done and got the result so you can't
00:08:15take anything away from them, I just thought it was a poor game, I really did, for a cup final
00:08:20spectacle you want two teams going at it and exciting but I'm not taking that away from Aberdeen.
00:08:26I'm not taking that away from Aberdeen, no I'm not taking that away from Aberdeen, no I'm not taking that away from Aberdeen.
00:08:29Celtic's deficiencies, Aberdeen have a game plan, if you go in with George Foreman you don't think
00:08:34well I'm going to slug it out with them. No, I said on Friday the only chance Aberdeen would be
00:08:39if two or three Celtic big players never turned up, fortunately for Aberdeen six of them never
00:08:44turned up, I don't think the front three or the three in the midfield turned up at all for Celtic.
00:08:49Well I think from the positives and let's first of all stick with the positives
00:08:54before we analyse Celtic's performance on the day but if you're looking for managers to
00:09:00come up with a game plan and come up with a formation and look at it and say well wait a
00:09:04minute we're going in against this side who have scored 19 goals against us, we've only managed to
00:09:09score four against them, they've given us a real spanking at Hampden as Alistair highlighted
00:09:14Friday when we were all offering our assessment of how the game was going to go
00:09:18but suddenly he plays a 3-5-2 and he gets them really really tight to each other and he said okay
00:09:24we'll swap that midfield as well, try and break us down down the flanks and I mean Yang couldn't
00:09:29get past them. He did get past once and the boy Jenson wiped him out which incredibly from
00:09:34Don Robertson wasn't a yellow card anyway, continue, I don't know why that wasn't a yellow card.
00:09:38Okay that sounds a bit petty to say the least, well in my view I looked at and I said at one point we
00:09:46were sitting in the press box and I went wow you know if you looked at overall the two best
00:09:52chances you'd Greg Taylor's two shots over the bar, you'd Schloop who hit the bar, Maedith
00:09:59Maedith straight through, Engles hit the post, Engles hits the post, meet off was superb,
00:10:06the goalkeeper was fantastic for him as well. I think everything went perfectly for Aberdeen on
00:10:12the day, I think he's learned his lesson, I think Aberdeen were riding a crest of a wave
00:10:16and they played Celtic in the semi-final, they went 4-3-3, they tried to press Celtic high,
00:10:20they got murdered so that wasn't going to happen again, so they're going to sit in tight,
00:10:24they played Jenson, left full-back, Devlin, right full-back, then they switched him over,
00:10:29switched him over a couple of times during the game Peter, I thought Devlin was magnificent,
00:10:32he was really really good, both of them are quick and they handled, they snuffed out the two wide
00:10:36men for Celtic, I thought that's about done an unselfish job, can I drop him back into
00:10:42Callum McGregor, so that was his game plan, stay in the game and then you bring your pace on later
00:10:47on and they brought Papa Guy on and they brought Shaden Morris on and that turned the game for
00:10:51Aberdeen, so you've got to give him credit, the manager, he's got a lot of praise at the start,
00:10:56then he's took a lot of stick, a lot of Aberdeen fans maybe starting to question him towards the
00:11:00end of the season there, with the poor run they were on, but he got his tactics absolutely
00:11:04spot on, Celtic were poor on the day, but Aberdeen's game plan worked their treat.
00:11:09In a game like that, there was an element of luck, the one that comes off the crossbar,
00:11:14hit the post, tailor a couple of decent chances, Maida should win it when he goes through,
00:11:21I think Maida just looked as though he was out on his feet, I think it's been a really long season,
00:11:26about travelling back and forth across recent weeks, waiting on the birth of this third child,
00:11:31I think now desperate to go home and see the new baby, I thought he looked exhausted by the end of
00:11:37it, but I think you need all that sometimes, you need an element of luck, I think Celtic had what,
00:11:4380% possession, 81% possession or something like that, it can happen, I thought Celtic were off,
00:11:49I thought they were flat, I think Aberdeen capitalised on that moment, they took it,
00:11:56I think they soaked up a lot of pressure, particularly in injury time, extra time,
00:12:01I thought Celtic were almost trying to walk the ball into the net, there was nobody that wanted
00:12:05to take any kind of responsibility for taking a shot, they were just in and around the box,
00:12:10without anyone wanting to test the goalkeeper, and when it comes to penalties, I thought Aberdeen's
00:12:16penalties were exceptional, they were really good penalties. If you're looking for penalty
00:12:19kicks, and you want to beat the goalkeeper, put them high, and by the way, you're looking at the
00:12:25penalty kicks, Schinney, Povara, Daba, Palaversa, excellent the way they executed their penalties,
00:12:32Celtic, McGregor, I sometimes think, I don't know about you Tam, but I always think lefties
00:12:39go across the keeper. I'm sitting watching it Peter and I thought he was going to do that,
00:12:42if he'd done that he'd have scored. I think it's a harder one, if you're right side to go there,
00:12:46it's an easier one for the keeper to save, if you whip it across him, I think you get more power on
00:12:50it. And again, if you go high, and Johnson's, again, great. He did as lucky as Will this
00:12:55penalty. Yeah, he was lucky actually. He just went up and just, I don't know what he was doing,
00:12:59he hit it down the middle and got unfortunate. Listen, Ruffey, cup finals. I know it's hard to
00:13:05take it anyway, I keep saying Will didn't he, you want to win a cup and all that, but as Alison said,
00:13:09everything went their way. Everything went their way that day. If it hadn't been for
00:13:14Schmeichel's mistake, they'd have lost that game. So what would we be doing here?
00:13:18What would we be doing here sitting? Come on Ruffey. No, I'm asking a question, if Schmeichel
00:13:23hadn't made the mistake and Celtic won 1-0, what would we be saying about Aberdeen?
00:13:28Well, that's football in a nutshell, those small moments change the game.
00:13:33With all due respect, what happens if Dorrington doesn't get the touch on the ball? It doesn't
00:13:40go into the back of the net. It's an own goal for the Aberdeen boy, that's a crazy attitude to him.
00:13:45No, I think if I was sitting in that dressing room, I'd be saying that to Schmeichel,
00:13:50if you hadn't made that mistake, we'd have won this cup.
00:13:52No, I don't think anybody would have said that to him in their right mind.
00:13:55No, I don't think they would have said it to him, but they'd be thinking it.
00:13:57We're going to analyse Celtic overall, but let me tell you this Ruffey, I think it comes across,
00:14:10and I'm only going to say this, on the basis that in a cup final in a one-off match, which we all
00:14:15discussed on Friday, we all offered our opinion and said it was going to be okay, your man here
00:14:22is turning into a pundit. I said 2-0.
00:14:24I said 2-0, but we're all looking and saying Celtic are going to win, but they didn't win
00:14:30because we've got to compliment Aberdeen the way they went about their game plan. When you go in
00:14:34in a one-off, it doesn't matter how you do it, if your game plan says, we know we're going to have
00:14:39to ride the storm out here, we know that they have got a budget that would sink the Titanic,
00:14:44we know they've got a squad that's better than ours, they've absolutely battered us over five
00:14:50games, I think Aberdeen are one draw and four heavy defeats. So at the end of the day, you've
00:14:56got to look and say to yourself, his tactics were 3-5-2, keep it tight in the middle of the park,
00:15:03don't let them get down the flanks and get in behind you to allow too many of those chances,
00:15:08and you're talking about three of the shots came from 18 to 20 yards out,
00:15:12so that is a plan, that is a tactic, you've got to give them credit for it.
00:15:18Yeah, I'm not taking it away from them, I'm just saying that kind of tactic spoils a cup final,
00:15:22you know, and I get what you're saying, that the back of your mind you would go into the game
00:15:27because of the results that went against you, you would do that, you know, but I thought they
00:15:31were very fortunate to win the game, I really do, I think all the chances, you've not told me a
00:15:37chance that Aberdeen had, what chance did Aberdeen have in the game?
00:15:44I mean, there wasn't a lot.
00:15:45There was nothing, it was one-way traffic, it was 80% Celtic.
00:15:50They had two shots on target, Roffy.
00:15:52Yeah, one was right at his stomach, but I'm not wanting to take anything away from Aberdeen,
00:15:58all I'm saying is that on the day, on the day, everything went well for them.
00:16:02There was an error, you had to go like that for Aberdeen to win.
00:16:06And by the way, Hugh Burns, who absolutely makes a hobby, Hugh is one of these guys who
00:16:13regularly follows the show, but he makes it a hobby of saying how can I absolutely batter
00:16:17anybody as soon as they raise their head up and say something, Hugh's just said,
00:16:21Roffy is bailing, even that, the honour was magnanimous, but listen, at the end of the day,
00:16:29somebody says Papaguay was through in goal, I think he might have been called back for offside
00:16:34but nevertheless, listen, they had two shots on target and they won the cup, so great credit to
00:16:40him, I thought they got their penalty spot on as well, and by the way, it changes things again for
00:16:46not only Dave Cormack, who was absolutely jumping about like a fan on the pitch, which was fantastic
00:16:54as well, the players, there was a lot of emotion, families were coming on, I felt really good for
00:17:00Nicky Devlin, because he's a pal, and I know his dad really well, and I just thought it was
00:17:06fantastic for them, so they won the cup, yesterday's a day that so many people will remember forever,
00:17:11which was brilliant as well, and Jimmy Tolien, this is what he had to say with that victory.
00:17:17I think when you arrive to this moment, you have to catch them and try the best you can,
00:17:24but when you go through this part, then you feel you can win, and you have to use this in the
00:17:30future, and that we talked about even before, that's why the league is so important, to try to
00:17:34catch Europe every year, to get used to play in so many games, play in four competitions every season,
00:17:40and be stronger, and manage this part, and the only way to do is to live it, and when you win,
00:17:46you can take a lot, and I think so many players today grow a lot, and then they get the feeling
00:17:51that they can do it, and it's going to help them in the future. Yeah, there is a man, now again,
00:17:57this is the one thing about, it's amazing how one game can change the narrative, Alison, but
00:18:02it didn't go pear-shaped for Jimmy Tolien, and well done to him, I know a lot of Aberdeen fans
00:18:07steamed in on me, because I suggested two options that they had, maybe at the start of the season,
00:18:13they chose Jimmy Tolien, but I'm telling you right now, there's a lot of disillusioned Aberdeen fans
00:18:19before he hit this cup final, and one game could have flipped it the other way, what is he doing,
00:18:24has he got anything to offer, there were 12 points clear at one point, and suddenly
00:18:28they've ended up fifth, so he's changed that, and he's got a great summer ahead for the manager,
00:18:34and the owners going to back him. Yeah, absolutely, I think it was an important game for him,
00:18:40regardless of outcome, I think there was always going to be a bit of scrutiny,
00:18:44one to see what he had learned from the previous meeting against Celtic at Hampden,
00:18:49how he was setting up to contain Celtic, I think even had Celtic won that game, for example,
00:18:56there's a shot goes in at the last minute and they win it 2-1 or whatever, had Celtic won it,
00:19:00I think he would still have come out with it, with an element of credit for being able to
00:19:04have managed the game, that there was an improvement in performance, that they came
00:19:07close to winning it, blah, blah, blah, the fact that they held on and won it, but I think it
00:19:12changes the optics entirely, here is a manager who's delivered a trophy that's eluded Aberdeen
00:19:18for 35 years, here is your moment in the sun, here is a glorious afternoon for the club,
00:19:24for the city, for the support to go and enjoy, and people will forget that there was luck involved,
00:19:30they'll forget the 80 odd 1% possession that Celtic had, that Celtic had at the bar,
00:19:35all that mattered about that game is coming out with the trophy, and what's important for him now
00:19:41is the possibility of changing the culture within that club, to say here you are, you're a winning
00:19:47dressing room, you're going into the summer, you've banked a trophy, what can you do now,
00:19:50next season, you have to take the experience of this and absorb it into your own professionalism
00:19:56and also into the culture of Aberdeen as a club, where do you go from here to try and sustain some
00:20:01of that, and I think sometimes you probably only, you need to win a trophy to do that,
00:20:06Ansh Postakoglu spoke a bit about it last week after winning the Europa League,
00:20:10kind of similar, saying that this is a club that desperately needed to win something,
00:20:14because you've got to change the culture, and the only way you're changing the culture
00:20:17is by going and doing it and doing something. Here's the Dons captain game, Shinnie.
00:20:22There's been many ups and downs this season, and a lot of people probably questioned the manager and
00:20:27questioned the team, but I mean, fifth wasn't the end of the world, but it wasn't where we
00:20:31wanted to be, we were in the fight for third, beating Hibbs in the first game of the split,
00:20:36and then ended up finishing fifth, which we weren't happy about, but the season in a whole,
00:20:41it wasn't really bad, but yeah, winning this now has changed everything, and everyone will
00:20:47look at it in a completely different way, if you got beat today, then you probably wouldn't be
00:20:51saying the same thing, so one game can change everything. Yeah, I think, you know, when you're
00:20:57in cup finals, you can wear a bucket hat, you can wear anything you want, by the way, as long as you
00:21:01win. Yeah, as long as you win, you look fantastic. I mean, for Graeme, it's really special. Yeah,
00:21:07I think it's like ten years to the day or something, isn't it? Ten years since he won the
00:21:10cup at Inverness, so, I think he's been a great servant for Aberdeen. I think he's played it left
00:21:15back this season, been criticised at times, but I thought he showed his professionalism,
00:21:20his fitness levels, he put down around 20 minutes, stepped up, first penalty, bang,
00:21:24put it in the net. Yeah. It's interesting the two captains went up first, to try and set an example,
00:21:28which doesn't happen very often. Obviously, Karl McGregor missed his, but Shinny stuck it away,
00:21:33so, yeah, delighted for him, delighted for Aberdeen, but it's an absolute sickness for
00:21:36Hibs, let's not beat about the bush. Hibs, I was sitting with two Hibs fans yesterday,
00:21:41watching the game, they were absolutely sick, you know, because, basically, Celtic, as we know,
00:21:45have had a better Aberdeen all season, and the one game where the Hibs fans needed Celtic to do
00:21:51them a turn was that one, so, Hibs are going to have to play probably one or two qualifiers now,
00:21:56to try and get into the group stages, and that could totally transform not only Aberdeen,
00:22:00who have guaranteed group stage football now, with that kitty, to get into the Europa League.
00:22:05Yeah. But if they lose that, they get into the Conference League.
00:22:08Yeah, absolutely, but can you imagine them getting into the Europa League?
00:22:11Oh, the Europa League is massive money. I mean, they'll probably get battered, but they'll not
00:22:16care. Conference League, they'll be more competitive, but it's not as much money,
00:22:19so it depends what you're looking for. Well, the good thing about it, Ruffey,
00:22:21is quite simply, if Dave Cormack sticks by it and says, look, I'm going to give you a bit of money,
00:22:26I would absolutely love Aberdeen to get into the Europa League. That is a huge, huge injection.
00:22:31Yeah, I think all the Aberdeen supporters will be thinking that as well. You know,
00:22:34what is the next level? Where are we going to? Where's the owner going to take us? You know,
00:22:38because that support deserves everything. That support travels everywhere more than
00:22:43any other support in Scottish football. They're there, and I think any club that they go to,
00:22:49they add money to the opposition. So yeah, I think they're due the owner to do something,
00:22:54and we'll just have to wait and see what he does do. But certainly,
00:22:58they'll have no problem selling season tickets. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, listen,
00:23:02just before we move on to Celtic, I think we've given great credit to Aberdeen. Obviously,
00:23:08Ruffey sounded like a spoiled Celtic fan at moments there, but nevertheless,
00:23:14I've got to give credit to the Aberdeen fans. 20,000 of them, and it was a great spectacle.
00:23:21That's what football for me is all about. You turn one way, you see massive green and white.
00:23:25You turn the other way, usually it's blue and white, but this time it was red and white,
00:23:30and it was fantastic, Ali. I thought the Aberdeen fans were up for it. I thought they
00:23:34sang their heart out the whole game. I thought they got behind their team. They stayed behind
00:23:39them. I felt the Celtic fans a bit like the performance on the pitch. I thought Celtic
00:23:44fans were flat. I thought celebrations felt muted, even when the goal went in.
00:23:49It was like, we're here, where's this trophy? I thought Aberdeen fans, you could sense that
00:23:55they wanted it more. You could sense it meant so much more as well. I think when it got to
00:24:02the point where the game was nudging towards penalties and you could feel the tension within
00:24:08the stadium with Celtic pushing and pushing to try and get a late winner, I thought the
00:24:12Aberdeen fans were the vocal ones. They were the ones that you could hear within the stadium.
00:24:16Ali, I don't know about you, but I wouldn't like to have been a fly on the wall for the
00:24:20guy who was there, but when they're talking through, by the way, could you take the entire
00:24:24set down and burn the treble t-shirts that we've all, we've ordered 60,000 of them,
00:24:30and take the set down at Celtic Park? Because he just missed a second. I mean, honestly,
00:24:39talk about flat. The thing is, you've got to do that. You're done if you do.
00:24:44You're done if you do. We played Leamington in the final and I remember coming in and
00:24:48I seen a big bag of them. We got beat off at Leamington and I'd seen Hibs League Cup winners
00:24:53and I was starting to grieve even more. You've got to do it. It's a collector's item.
00:25:00You should have taken the whole box. You've got to prepare to win it.
00:25:04I get that.
00:25:05Now, let's put things in, well, Les, I'm going to batter you for this one. Les,
00:25:16praising fans for disgraceful scenes, invading the pitch, flares on the pitch, double standards.
00:25:21Not double standards, Les, geese, peace. Aberdeen fans. If there were a few down at
00:25:27the far corner who actually managed to breach the advertising board.
00:25:31Facebook.
00:25:33But there wasn't full scale riots and they were just quickly ushered back to their seats.
00:25:39You can actually have people who go on to a pitch and don't cause trouble.
00:25:42Not that I'm condoning it or saying it's...
00:25:45You boys are taking selfies and all that, isn't that?
00:25:47Yeah, absolutely. Listen, at the end of the day, the flip side of that, we will be going to
00:25:52Kilmarnock to speak to Blair Malloy shortly on the new manager there, Stuart Kettlewell,
00:25:58but the flip side of it all is Brendan Rodgers.
00:26:02It wasn't the treble, it was the double. This is a Celtic manager.
00:26:06Yeah, I said to the players, I think if we look at this game,
00:26:10first of all, I think that we didn't play to our level and our standard and
00:26:17so that's a big disappointment.
00:26:18So we can't blame anyone, we can only look at ourselves.
00:26:23But the bigger picture, we've won two out of three domestic trophies.
00:26:28Progressed in Europe and now's the time to go away with your families
00:26:37because they will need them and it's important that they have that time to reflect.
00:26:43And then after a few weeks, they'll realise that,
00:26:45OK, we missed a chance today to win the three trophies, but still,
00:26:50we'll be consistently very good over the course of the season.
00:26:53And then we come back, re-motivate it and renew the motivation in the service.
00:27:00I mean, I did ask Brendan Rodgers if it was going to be difficult
00:27:03after such a defeat to try and put things in perspective.
00:27:06Ruffey, we could analyse and dissect some of the players and their performances.
00:27:12I always say that you have to look at what the manager does
00:27:15and you have to analyse what he's doing and you have to listen to what he says.
00:27:18We've all been privileged in programmes where what he doesn't say sometimes
00:27:24and what you read between the lines with Brendan Rodgers speaks volumes.
00:27:28But if I'm going to be brutal about it, Ruffey,
00:27:31Adam Ida, you know, he subbed him.
00:27:35He's paid £9 million for him.
00:27:37Now, the boy might get better, but he just hasn't looked like that
00:27:41really dangerous striker in these big games.
00:27:45For me personally, to move Maida, who scored 33 goals,
00:27:49out to the left-hand side of a three wasn't in my mind the right thing to do.
00:27:55I thought he was open to criticism for that.
00:27:57Koon hasn't kicked a ball since Munich.
00:28:00Bernardo, he took him off, tells you all you need to know.
00:28:03Engels, he's taken him off in the game.
00:28:08Midfielders grab the game.
00:28:09Midfielders change the game.
00:28:11Engels hasn't done that.
00:28:13He's had 10 assists and a fair few goals,
00:28:15but I'm still to wait to see the best of that boy.
00:28:18And then at the back,
00:28:21you know, Greg Taylor has got a big decision to make.
00:28:24Liam Scales, I think, will struggle for his place next season.
00:28:27Brendan Rodgers has got a lot of things that he's going to go back
00:28:30to Dermot Desmond and the rest of that board and say,
00:28:32OK, this season we've won two out of three.
00:28:36And I think the players deserve tremendous credit for that.
00:28:38The best performance they had was against Munich.
00:28:41And then after that, the whole thing's just gone brrrr
00:28:43and he's had to try and fight to keep them focused.
00:28:46No, I think he's been very fortunate as well.
00:28:49All year it hasn't been.
00:28:52The other teams have to have been at their strongest.
00:28:54You know, Hearts and Hibs struggled very, very early.
00:28:57Rangers never really materialised for the whole season.
00:29:00Aberdeen had that spell as well.
00:29:01So from the whole season domestically,
00:29:06I think he's had a pretty easy ride.
00:29:08I mean, it is attractive football
00:29:09and it's good to watch when you're winning.
00:29:11But there has been a lot of occasions when it has been flat.
00:29:14And yeah, he has got a lot to think about,
00:29:17because just as you've identified there,
00:29:19the three players they took off were the three biggest signings.
00:29:23So you're not expecting that to happen.
00:29:25You're not expecting the three biggest signings,
00:29:27money-wise, to contribute in a game.
00:29:29And that never happened.
00:29:30So, no, I think on the whole, as I said at the earlier show,
00:29:34I mean, any other given day they'd have won that cup final.
00:29:37So you could see what it meant to Callum McGregor.
00:29:40So, you know, he's going to take a while to get over that.
00:29:42Yeah, this is the Celtic captain.
00:29:44It's the worst moment I've ever had in football.
00:29:46So it's a real slow one.
00:29:50And I'll just need to go away and try and go over it,
00:29:53and then come back next year and be stronger.
00:29:55So we didn't do enough in the game to deserve it.
00:30:00And then when you get to penalties, it's a bit of a lottery.
00:30:02In the last few times, we've come out on the right side of it.
00:30:06And today we didn't.
00:30:08So, yeah, it's a real sore way to finish the season.
00:30:11Up until this point, it's been an amazing season.
00:30:14And we just didn't do enough today to cap it off.
00:30:17I mean, he was really emotional at the end.
00:30:20And I did feel for him seeing him there and having to be consoled by people.
00:30:24But I don't think he's got anything to be ashamed of, Ali.
00:30:27My God, he's been the best midfielder in the last five years in this country.
00:30:30And he's never...
00:30:31That's the first time I think he's tasted defeat in a cup final.
00:30:34I think it was at 15 finals.
00:30:36And that's the first one he's lost.
00:30:37I thought his reaction was actually quite telling.
00:30:41I thought his reaction was actually the antithesis of what...
00:30:46the complacency that I felt was among the Celtic support of turning up
00:30:50and just expecting to win.
00:30:51And I thought his reaction and how upset it was showed you,
00:30:54well, here's a guy that still means a lot to you.
00:30:57It still means he still wanted it.
00:31:00You know, when you look at his medal collection and where he is
00:31:03and how successful he's been with Celtic,
00:31:06and yet that moment will rankle, it will stick with him forever now.
00:31:10I think it just underpinned how much it still means to him,
00:31:14how much he still wants to be winning.
00:31:15It wasn't just another game or another final.
00:31:18He will have more moments like that, I'm sure of it,
00:31:20before his career has come to a close.
00:31:23But you could see it was sore.
00:31:24Yeah, the one thing...
00:31:25Antithesis means opposite.
00:31:27Yeah, the one thing I was going to say to you...
00:31:30And if you wanted to say you're such a condescending prick,
00:31:34you're more than welcome to do it, by the way.
00:31:37To be corrected by Errol is the ultimate insult, Roffy.
00:31:41Let me tell you.
00:31:47Geoffrey has been corrected by Bungle.
00:31:49It's unbelievable.
00:31:51Anyway, can I just say at this point, though,
00:31:55as far as Celtic are concerned, I think, put it in perspective,
00:31:59they've won a double.
00:32:01They've played some really good football.
00:32:03I think Brendan has fulfilled the remit
00:32:06because the Champions League after Dortmund
00:32:09was nothing but great credit for them.
00:32:11Some of the football was great to watch.
00:32:15And I think Celtic fans, those that are not entitled,
00:32:18will put it in perspective and say it's a double.
00:32:20They've won the league again.
00:32:21They've got a huge kitty of money coming,
00:32:24as well as millions in the bank.
00:32:27I think you'll look and say, right, OK,
00:32:29chap's the door.
00:32:31Dermot, back me and give me three or four other quality players
00:32:35and you go again.
00:32:36Yeah, I think they've played really good football
00:32:39up to a point, Peter, and that was by a minute away.
00:32:41I don't think they have since then.
00:32:45After that game, they've probably thought, right,
00:32:47OK, we're going to win the league.
00:32:48We'll probably win the Cups.
00:32:49And I think there's been a real drop-off of performances,
00:32:52hunger levels, everything culminating in yesterday.
00:32:55So I think there is a big summer ahead.
00:32:57Obviously Kieran Tierney's coming in,
00:32:59which could be a fantastic signing.
00:33:00If he keeps himself fit, listen, he's a tremendous left back.
00:33:03Definitely better than what they've got if he stays fit.
00:33:07And you're right, they've got to sign another two or three.
00:33:09That's going to cost money.
00:33:10Nine, 10 million pound players.
00:33:12Just going back to what you said about the substitutions,
00:33:16I thought taking Engles and Eider off,
00:33:2020 million pound in a Cup final is telling
00:33:24for Brendan Rodgers.
00:33:26I don't know if it's a message to the board or whatever,
00:33:28but to take those two guys off in a Cup final at 1-0,
00:33:31I thought, well, they're not good enough.
00:33:33They weren't good enough.
00:33:34I know, Peter, but you still keep them on.
00:33:35I would have persevered.
00:33:36You keep them on, Peter.
00:33:37You spend 20 million pound on two players
00:33:39and you bring a kid on, Johnny Kenny.
00:33:42No, but do you want me to tell you something?
00:33:43The last point on this, because I want to move on
00:33:45and try and get as much in elsewhere on this,
00:33:48and the last point that I think, Ruffey,
00:33:50is well worthy of any of you who want to chip in.
00:33:54You've got to give Celtic credit for what they've achieved.
00:33:56I thought they played the best football I've seen
00:33:58in a long time for them in that stadium,
00:34:01but this is the point I'm making of where it didn't actually
00:34:05go according to plan for Brendan Rodgers in the treble.
00:34:09You cannot, you cannot sell your best striker
00:34:13in a January transfer window and not replace them.
00:34:16They left the manager exposed to a game
00:34:20that they might've won in Munich,
00:34:22had to replace them with an option of a striker
00:34:25to replace Kyoko's goals.
00:34:27There are times when he might've been off the boil,
00:34:29but Kyoko as a player was somebody that could score goals.
00:34:32He could score them against Rangers.
00:34:34He could score them in big games.
00:34:36They exposed themselves in Munich
00:34:37when they didn't have anybody to call on
00:34:39and they exposed themselves again
00:34:41because quite simply, they couldn't get,
00:34:43they couldn't break them down.
00:34:45They couldn't get that movement that Kyoko,
00:34:47and when he wasn't there, they didn't replace him.
00:34:49And I thought that was the most telling part of it all.
00:34:52I thought they were very fortunate that when Kyoko went,
00:34:55that Maida stepped up to the plate.
00:34:57Yeah.
00:34:57If Maida hadn't had the fantastic season he had
00:35:01and scored the amount of goals that he scored,
00:35:03because I don't think we all thought
00:35:04he was going to be that prolific.
00:35:06I think if he went a bit flat,
00:35:08then all hell would have broke loose
00:35:10with that move that you're talking about.
00:35:12But he did come up with the goals
00:35:13and I think that was an easy, an easy get for them.
00:35:16You know, to say, well, Maida's scoring the goals.
00:35:18We don't need anybody else.
00:35:20Paul Brady's just made a great point,
00:35:22which Tam has just highlighted here.
00:35:24Brendan played Liam Scales
00:35:25ahead of a £6 million centre-half that he bought.
00:35:28And these are the things that you read into with him.
00:35:31But one of the things I was going to say,
00:35:32just because if some people join the programme
00:35:34at some point and miss it,
00:35:37that we started off, and I think it's right to point out,
00:35:40congratulations to Aberdeen.
00:35:42Absolutely fantastic.
00:35:43100,000 fans yesterday,
00:35:45just celebrating a cup win,
00:35:48which hopefully will give them the chance
00:35:49to maybe strengthen the side,
00:35:51become a better force.
00:35:52Certainly we'd love the Aberdeens of the world,
00:35:55the Hibs of the world,
00:35:56to get European football group stage stuff,
00:35:59which will give them a huge injection of cash.
00:36:01We need stronger teams in the Scottish league.
00:36:04And of course, we're going to talk about Rangers
00:36:06very shortly as well.
00:36:07But as a cup final, might not have been the best.
00:36:10Dons fans don't care.
00:36:12I certainly care because I opened my big fat gob on Friday
00:36:16and it's prompted me to wear a strip
00:36:18that probably I would never have worn
00:36:19in a Monday or Sunday.
00:36:21But you've got to take it in the gin, Tam, haven't you?
00:36:24You have, and to be fair, you've stood by it.
00:36:26Yeah, absolutely.
00:36:27He's got his Copas on there as well, by the way.
00:36:30I think I'm still due a bottle of wine.
00:36:32You are due a bottle of wine, I'll let him know.
00:36:34January, it took a while to put that date up.
00:36:36I'll get you a bottle of wine.
00:36:38Yeah, well done.
00:36:40Tonic wine?
00:36:40I think...
00:36:42Nothing like bubbly holly with a big long memory.
00:36:45Most of the listeners and the viewers would be absolutely
00:36:49wishing you hadn't promised a Gary Lineker.
00:36:56Yeah.
00:36:57One of the viewers is.
00:36:58You should be happy with that strip.
00:37:00To be fair, my gob has already got me in trouble.
00:37:03We're still barred from one club.
00:37:05Long way to go.
00:37:07Anyway.
00:37:07I'm not sure that's open to you.
00:37:11I've paid my debt.
00:37:12I've said I would wear it if Aberdeen won the cup
00:37:14and they did.
00:37:15So well done to them.
00:37:16OK, you can give us your thoughts.
00:37:18We'll read out some of your points, because it is indeed
00:37:22always good to take it in the neck, as quite a few people have.
00:37:25But congratulations to Aberdeen.
00:37:27I think they win the cup.
00:37:29And as Kenneth O'Leach mentioned on many an occasion,
00:37:32who cares about possession?
00:37:34Who cares about chances, target, the lot?
00:37:36At the end of the day, if it says that you've won the cup
00:37:40or you've won the game, that's all that will be in the history books.
00:37:43And for Aberdeen, they are Scottish Cup champions.
00:37:45So well done to them.
00:37:47Elsewhere, there are people hoping that there can be a change in fortunes.
00:37:50What about down at Kilmarnock?
00:37:53Blair, Stuart Kettlewell, Red Hot Tip.
00:37:56Well done to Scott Burns, actually.
00:37:58The journalist who predicted that he was going to get the job.
00:38:00He's in there.
00:38:02And I would imagine, delighted to be back in Scottish football, Blair.
00:38:07Good afternoon, Peter.
00:38:08I must say, red is very much your colour on the studio today.
00:38:12You joined me this afternoon in the Kilmarnock press room.
00:38:16I just came in here to get out of that howling Ayrshire wind this afternoon.
00:38:20But the man who will sit in this seat behind me
00:38:23at the press conferences for the next two years is Stuart Kettlewell.
00:38:26He today has been announced as Derek McInnes's successor as Kilmarnock manager.
00:38:32And here's what he had to say this afternoon on taking the job.
00:38:36I think what was always important to me,
00:38:37I have been offered jobs since I came out of Motherwell.
00:38:42But what was always important to me was to try and get the right fit for me.
00:38:45That might never come along.
00:38:46You know, I have said that to one or two people.
00:38:48You know, how I would like to move a football club forward
00:38:51really connects with, you know, what Kilmarnock have done here.
00:38:54And I need to stress that as well.
00:38:56It's adding to the work that's been done.
00:38:58I think often when you come in as a manager,
00:38:59it's a, you know, I find myself coming in sort of bottom of the league
00:39:03and prospects maybe not looking great at Motherwell.
00:39:05And very quickly as a group, we turn that around.
00:39:08It's a different prospect here.
00:39:12One of the main topics of discussion
00:39:14at Stuart Kettlewell's first press conference here at Kilmarnock
00:39:17was not the club he is joining,
00:39:19but rather the club that he left in Motherwell.
00:39:22He, of course, quit the Fir Park side in January,
00:39:25citing personal reasons and abuse that him and his family had taken,
00:39:29meaning that his family no longer wanted to attend games.
00:39:32He addressed that this afternoon.
00:39:34And he said that he's maybe learned from his time away from the game
00:39:38and that just because this is his job,
00:39:40it doesn't need to be his family's life.
00:39:42So maybe suggesting there that he's going to put a little bit of distance
00:39:46between his family life and his football life going forward.
00:39:49And seeing that, however,
00:39:50he did confirm that he stands by his decision to leave Motherwell when he did.
00:39:55And he certainly doesn't regret that move.
00:39:58I asked Stuart Kettlewell for a message for the Kilmarnock fans.
00:40:01What will a Stuart Kettlewell team look like here at Rugby Park?
00:40:05He said it's built around four pillars,
00:40:07the first of which is allowing players to grow,
00:40:10bringing that pathway for young players into the first team.
00:40:13He cited David Watson as, of course, an exciting young talent here at Kilmarnock.
00:40:18He's got a track record with that, doing that with Lennon Miller at Motherwell.
00:40:22Secondly, he said this team will be organised.
00:40:24He said that these players will know everything they need to know
00:40:27going into all of these games,
00:40:29especially in this very tricky Scottish Premiership season to come.
00:40:33Thirdly, he said that his team will have a never-say-die attitude
00:40:37and they will keep going until the last minute.
00:40:39And fourth, he said that they will have to be versatile in this top division.
00:40:45Well, there you have it.
00:40:46Curly, a bigger team than Motherwell, Robbie?
00:40:49No, I think they're about the same.
00:40:51You know, I think they've got the same fan base.
00:40:54They've got different owners, obviously.
00:40:56Motherwell's fan-owned.
00:40:58Billy Bowie runs Kilmarnock.
00:41:00Anytime we've had him on the show here, he's been very impressive.
00:41:04A very impressive coach.
00:41:06Talks well about the game.
00:41:07Thinks a lot about the game.
00:41:09You know, I think the players will be impressed
00:41:11by the way, how thorough he is going into games.
00:41:14And I think he's a good appointment.
00:41:16I think he's a safe appointment.
00:41:19But he'll know himself.
00:41:20They have to do better next year.
00:41:21Yeah, listen, I think he's a more experienced coach now.
00:41:27He's had highs and lows in it all.
00:41:30I think he deserves credit for what he achieved at Motherwell.
00:41:33I certainly was slightly surprised by his decision
00:41:36based on the fact that he, you know, he decided to get out.
00:41:40Some people thought he was maybe clever getting out
00:41:42because he looked at what was unfolding at Motherwell
00:41:45and thought, you know, maybe I've got them to the ceiling point.
00:41:48But, you know, Michael Wimmer proved that that's not the case.
00:41:52Yeah, I think he left them when they were in the top six.
00:41:55And I think that's maybe clever timing from him.
00:42:00Obviously, Motherwell finished in the bottom six.
00:42:02So it looks like a good decision from him.
00:42:05I think he's a good coach.
00:42:06I've always liked him.
00:42:07I liked him at Norse County.
00:42:08You know, he brought a lot of young players through at Motherwell.
00:42:11You know, he gave them opportunities.
00:42:12Lennon Muller being the main one.
00:42:13But yeah, I think Ruffey just mentioned it.
00:42:16He's a safe pair of hands.
00:42:17He knows the league.
00:42:18And I think he'll get in there with Stephen Frail.
00:42:20They've got great experience between them.
00:42:22And they'll get Kilmarnock going this season.
00:42:24Disappointing season for Kilmarnock this year.
00:42:27And the only way is up.
00:42:28I think sometimes as a manager,
00:42:29when you come in and the team has done poorly the season before,
00:42:32it gives you a wee bit more leeway, Peter,
00:42:33rather than come in when the team's been flying.
00:42:34A wee bit more pressure on you.
00:42:36So, listen, if he finishes,
00:42:38if Kilmarnock get in the top six next year,
00:42:40I'm sure everybody would have liked it, Kilmarnock.
00:42:42Yeah, and there's still jobs to fill elsewhere.
00:42:45Charlie Adam being linked with the Dundee job,
00:42:48although Maloney remains the favourite there.
00:42:51And of course, now Motherwell have to look and start thinking,
00:42:54OK, who's going to fill Michael Vimmer?
00:42:56Yeah, it's interesting, isn't it?
00:42:58I think Motherwell will probably be a bit taken aback.
00:43:01I think they would have been blindsided by that one last week.
00:43:04I don't think they would have anticipated
00:43:05having to be in the hunt for a new manager.
00:43:07So interesting to see where they go.
00:43:09I think Michael Vimmer's appointment was a fairly ambitious one,
00:43:13like maybe breaking the tried and tested,
00:43:15trying to do something new.
00:43:17So I wonder if they'll continue with that
00:43:19or if they'll go for someone a bit closer to home.
00:43:22But I think for clubs like Dundee, like Motherwell,
00:43:24you probably want to have someone in place
00:43:26as quickly as possible.
00:43:28Someone to come in, get an opportunity to do their homework,
00:43:31maybe have a look at games and performances
00:43:33towards the end of the campaign.
00:43:35Get a chance to look at the squad,
00:43:37who's out of contract, where surgery needs done,
00:43:40and give you a bit of time to then go into pre-season games
00:43:44and do your assessment so that you're in a position,
00:43:46a strong position to start the season
00:43:49rather than someone coming in
00:43:50and you feel as though you're playing catch-up
00:43:52when the season begins.
00:43:54And slightly tongue-in-cheek, Raffy,
00:43:55but when Blair said he had a message for the Kelly fans,
00:43:58I thought he was going to say,
00:43:58don't shout at me.
00:44:02But he's the one thing...
00:44:06Stuart Kettlewell will start the season
00:44:07with a big earmuffs on,
00:44:10so he can't hear anybody.
00:44:11You haven't priced it at Darts yet.
00:44:12Don't bring the family.
00:44:14Just let them stay at home.
00:44:16Exactly.
00:44:17That's the way to do it.
00:44:19I think, I mean, honestly,
00:44:22he has been in here and he's spoken very well.
00:44:24I agree with you, Raffy.
00:44:25I think he'll be good for Kelly.
00:44:27I wish him every success.
00:44:29He's certainly one of those boys
00:44:31that you like to see back in football.
00:44:32I think he's got something to offer.
00:44:34He's a good lad, yeah.
00:44:35So there you are.
00:44:37What about Rangers?
00:44:38Because the general feeling is
00:44:40that something's going to break this week
00:44:42in the next seven days,
00:44:44if not sooner.
00:44:46We've been waiting for long and weary.
00:44:47I think the first thing that might break
00:44:49is the takeover
00:44:50rather than the manager coming in.
00:44:53I think that's got to break first, Peter.
00:44:54I think that they obviously have the say
00:44:56in bringing the manager in, Kevin Thelwell.
00:44:58So, yeah, I think it's dragged on a little bit.
00:45:00But when you look at the intricacies of the deal,
00:45:03different clubs involved,
00:45:04different people involved.
00:45:05So I think it was always going to take time.
00:45:07But I think the Rangers fans
00:45:08will be wanting it done as quick as possible, Peter.
00:45:11They've obviously got qualifier.
00:45:12They've got the season starting fairly shortly
00:45:14after the summer.
00:45:15So they want a new manager in
00:45:16and new players in.
00:45:18Because that squad, for me, needs gutted.
00:45:20You need a lot of players out
00:45:22and some good quality back in.
00:45:24And money spent on the team and the squad.
00:45:26So, yeah, I would expect it to happen this week.
00:45:30Yeah, I think so.
00:45:31I think the noises are all that
00:45:33somewhere around this week
00:45:35there will be news coming in.
00:45:37I think I agree.
00:45:39I think the takeover,
00:45:40I think, can be fairly complex
00:45:42given the legalities
00:45:44and business legalities of things.
00:45:46It was always going to be fairly drawn out, I think.
00:45:49And I'm not an expert on any kind of
00:45:52business or legal side of things,
00:45:54but I think it was always going to be fairly drawn out
00:45:57given the complexities involved.
00:45:58The manager, I think,
00:46:00all the signs point to the fact
00:46:02that it's about, you know,
00:46:04crossing T's and dotting I's now
00:46:06and that an appointment is imminent.
00:46:08Yeah, and when they get that takeover,
00:46:10they'll be hanging on,
00:46:11the Rangers fans will be hanging on
00:46:13every word with regards to...
00:46:16If they don't know it now,
00:46:17they'll definitely know that the remit
00:46:19from the first press conference is,
00:46:21tell us we're going to win the league
00:46:23in the first season.
00:46:24Yeah, and I think once the appointment's made,
00:46:28the very first signing
00:46:30that new manager makes will be,
00:46:33as far as the supporter's concerned,
00:46:35the way ahead.
00:46:36If it's a big one,
00:46:37you know, they'll say,
00:46:38oh, this is what's going to happen.
00:46:39This is the change that's going to happen at the club.
00:46:42But Tam's right,
00:46:42there's a lot of people there have to leave
00:46:44before you start,
00:46:45you know, bringing people in in bigger wages.
00:46:48You know, there's a lot of dead wood there
00:46:49and that has to be cleared first.
00:46:51Yeah.
00:46:52OK, give us your thoughts on that, Rangers fans.
00:46:55Are you going to be able to flip it,
00:46:57turn it around
00:46:59and win the league next season?
00:47:01What are you hoping for from the owners?
00:47:02What do you want them to say?
00:47:04And what are you looking for in that manager?
00:47:07Because, Ali,
00:47:09just changes.
00:47:10This is the one situation,
00:47:12sometimes you get something,
00:47:14a little sniff from somewhere.
00:47:16But this is the one situation
00:47:18where everybody's just literally
00:47:19throwing darts in a darkened room, isn't it?
00:47:22There's not been much coming out at all.
00:47:24I think, you know,
00:47:26the focus was on Ancelotti,
00:47:27then it had all gone cold
00:47:29and Steven Gerrard was praying for a turn.
00:47:33It seems to all be pointing back
00:47:34towards Ancelotti this week.
00:47:37I'm not sure anybody's really,
00:47:39I don't know,
00:47:40that really knows.
00:47:42It's not a crime not to have a clue, Ali.
00:47:45I think there's a lot that we don't,
00:47:47we just don't know.
00:47:49Quite often in situations what you get
00:47:51is someone,
00:47:52clearly there is a bit of briefing
00:47:54that sometimes goes on
00:47:55or there is someone somewhere
00:47:57that is offering information
00:48:01that leaks out.
00:48:02Well, suddenly you've changed
00:48:03from the journos,
00:48:04from the briefing.
00:48:05Not from clubs.
00:48:06Are you in my camp?
00:48:07Not from clubs,
00:48:08but sometimes there is.
00:48:08You see, you used to have been in the media
00:48:12a long, long time.
00:48:13When something like this happens,
00:48:14if you are a favourite of that particular club,
00:48:18is it necessarily that you might get a heads up?
00:48:20Never.
00:48:21That's a total myth.
00:48:22In my experience, that's a complete myth.
00:48:24Is it?
00:48:24In my working experience, yes.
00:48:27OK, I'll say that you do get sniffs.
00:48:31I've never had any.
00:48:32No, a phone call from somebody
00:48:33to say, look, this is the way this is.
00:48:35Never.
00:48:35In my working career, I've never had any.
00:48:37I think depending on your relationship
00:48:38with some people,
00:48:39you can get a nod and a wink
00:48:42or you can obviously get a situation
00:48:45where if you're calling regularly
00:48:46and you've got a relationship
00:48:48with managers and players
00:48:49at various places,
00:48:51sometimes chairmen, chief executives,
00:48:54board members or managers or players,
00:48:57if you've got something as a story,
00:49:00they'll stand it up
00:49:01or shoot it down for you as well.
00:49:02That's different.
00:49:03I think that's different.
00:49:04I know that, I know that.
00:49:04But what are you saying?
00:49:05That's different from someone briefing you?
00:49:07Yeah, can you get a brief?
00:49:09I can only tell you it's happened before.
00:49:12Not on a personal level,
00:49:14hand to God, never.
00:49:16But there is something different in saying,
00:49:18can you ask a question of someone
00:49:20that you've got a relationship
00:49:21and yeah, they may give you an aye or a no.
00:49:24But I've never had something
00:49:25falling to my lap like that.
00:49:27Like somebody just say,
00:49:28here's a story, ever.
00:49:29And says it all.
00:49:30Yeah.
00:49:30Well, probably.
00:49:34You are such a...
00:49:35You're a complete witch today,
00:49:38obviously you are.
00:49:39No, no, you do get it.
00:49:42And then sometimes,
00:49:46along the way...
00:49:47It's a thick skin to come on you.
00:49:49Did they not have to smuggle
00:49:51wee Moe into the eyebrooks
00:49:53when he went and took him upstairs
00:49:56into the toilet
00:49:56so the media couldn't see him?
00:49:57Well, with all due respect,
00:49:59Moe's mum get into a black taxi
00:50:00and says, my son's signing for Rangers.
00:50:03Somebody said, don't be so bloody stupid.
00:50:05And then, lo and behold,
00:50:06it all happened.
00:50:07These things happen.
00:50:08Listen, before we go,
00:50:09I've got a couple of things we want to do
00:50:10before I get this Aberdeen strip off.
00:50:14I've got to mention,
00:50:15I must mention,
00:50:16just so that I think
00:50:17it's only right and proper.
00:50:19I went into the Football Shirt Emporium
00:50:22in Quarry Place, I think it was.
00:50:25Was that Hamilton?
00:50:25In Hamilton.
00:50:26I mean, the big guy was absolutely fantastic.
00:50:30He's doing well in an area,
00:50:32you know, where you see
00:50:33lots of shops closed down roughly.
00:50:35But he was in there,
00:50:36he looks like...
00:50:38How can I describe it?
00:50:40A big yeti.
00:50:43Really cheery, really fun.
00:50:45And he loves his football.
00:50:46And he's got lots of...
00:50:46What a boy would love a shop like that.
00:50:48Oh, no, honestly,
00:50:49he was really, really enthusiastic and brilliant.
00:50:52And I'm sure he won't mind me saying
00:50:54he's a big Rangers fan.
00:50:56And he said to me,
00:50:57I knew there was going to be somebody
00:50:59coming in to buy an Aberdeen shirt.
00:51:00And I said...
00:51:01I didn't expect it to be you.
00:51:02But not in these circumstances,
00:51:04let me tell you.
00:51:05But it's a great shop
00:51:06and I really wish him the very best.
00:51:08You want to see people succeed.
00:51:10And it's...
00:51:11Everybody wants a replica.
00:51:13Well, it doesn't matter what year it is or whatever.
00:51:15I mean, it's getting more and more and more popular.
00:51:17Or a Peru shirt,
00:51:18the actual one that was a match worn.
00:51:21Still, that's another story.
00:51:23Let's crack on.
00:51:24Who's going to win the playoff?
00:51:26Still sticking with them?
00:51:28Yeah?
00:51:28Don't think it's advantaged Ross County at home?
00:51:32I think we'll look at penalties, Peter.
00:51:34I can see maybe 0-0-1 each again.
00:51:36I just really don't...
00:51:38There's not much between them, Peter.
00:51:39I think maybe Levy and penalties.
00:51:41Levy and penalties.
00:51:42And if it is Levy and penalties,
00:51:44do you think they're going to go high to the left and right
00:51:47and just show a bit of bottle?
00:51:49Well, if they take them at Aberdeen, take them.
00:51:51And people say penalties is luck and all that.
00:51:53And I get a degree of...
00:51:56There was no luck about Aberdeen's penalties.
00:51:57They were worked on.
00:51:58They were bottled.
00:51:59They were technique.
00:52:00And they were put away firmly.
00:52:02And that's why they won the cup.
00:52:03So I don't think it was lucky.
00:52:04I think they...
00:52:05They practised them and you could clearly tell
00:52:07because the keeper was nowhere near them.
00:52:09Yeah, I like Les Watt's line here.
00:52:11He says, I think the Dons are looking for a marquee.
00:52:13If you want to offer them your shirt.
00:52:16All right, on the back.
00:52:17Too long on Ibiza.
00:52:19Well done.
00:52:20I'm back on after the break.
00:52:22Well done, Les.
00:52:24Quite like that one.
00:52:25Good stuff.
00:52:26And Les, from everybody here,
00:52:28why don't you go and take a flying...
00:52:30Anyway.
00:52:31Ruffy, are you...
00:52:32No, I'm sticking with Ross County.
00:52:33Yeah?
00:52:33Home advantage, yeah.
00:52:34Winning in 90?
00:52:35Yep.
00:52:36Ali?
00:52:38I think the balance of the tie
00:52:40is probably tipped in Ross County's favour now
00:52:42that they're at home.
00:52:43But I still have a feeling about Livingston.
00:52:45I think Livingston might prevail.
00:52:47I think it might be...
00:52:49It might go to penalties too.
00:52:51But I just fancy Davey Martindale's side.
00:52:53Now listen, fair's fair here, right?
00:52:55And I think it's a really good point
00:52:56that Don Clarke has just made.
00:52:58And as we're into the final minutes
00:53:00of this show this week,
00:53:03I might as well say,
00:53:04I've really stepped up to the plate, Tam.
00:53:08If Livingston...
00:53:10Let's be honest, right?
00:53:11I'm not going to say.
00:53:12No, he said it.
00:53:13I'm just going to read it out to you.
00:53:14Aberdeen were about 91 to win the game.
00:53:16Ross County are favourites.
00:53:17How can that even compare?
00:53:18Mate, Tam, wear a Ross County shirt, Peter.
00:53:20I've county beaten you.
00:53:21Well, let's say Don Clarke,
00:53:22Davey, go and take a flying...
00:53:25No.
00:53:26Ali, would you?
00:53:27No.
00:53:28No, no, no, no.
00:53:28Not at all.
00:53:29It's a tight game.
00:53:30It's a 50-50.
00:53:30It's a tight shirt.
00:53:31I think...
00:53:33Exactly.
00:53:33I think if Ross County win the game,
00:53:36you should be wearing a harp strip.
00:53:38No, I don't think that'll happen.
00:53:41Shut up.
00:53:42Yeah, absolutely.
00:53:44I'll tell you one thing.
00:53:45This is the last time I've ever seen
00:53:48a Ferreira shirt.
00:53:48Can you imagine if it was an Old Firm final?
00:53:52I'd get done in.
00:53:53But anyway, apart from anything else,
00:53:56I don't think he's going to...
00:53:56I don't think he's going to do it.
00:53:57I tried, I tried my best.
00:53:59I'm going to go Livvy to win it.
00:54:00I'm going to stick with Davey Martindale
00:54:02I just think he's got something with the players
00:54:05that they might be able to pull it off
00:54:06away from home.
00:54:07They've done it before.
00:54:08But we shall see.
00:54:09Give us your thoughts on that as well.
00:54:11English Premier League finished off with...
00:54:15Listen, one little talking point
00:54:16that I think is interesting
00:54:17and it really has implications
00:54:19for all of football right across the globe.
00:54:23And it came in the Aston Villa game
00:54:24because they were penalised
00:54:26for a goalkeeping mistake
00:54:28rather than any foul on the goalkeeper,
00:54:30in my view, Ruffey.
00:54:31And it's cost them millions.
00:54:32And I think it's down to the incompetence
00:54:34of the referee and the VAR officials.
00:54:36I cannot believe Aston Villa
00:54:38are not kicking up a huge fuss.
00:54:41Ten men.
00:54:41Even Ruffey can't defend this goalkeeper.
00:54:44He cannot.
00:54:44No, but it's hard and it's done.
00:54:46It's not going to get changed.
00:54:47No, but I would say he's just lost
00:54:48about £100 million.
00:54:49No, tough.
00:54:50Just get on with it.
00:54:51That's the way it is.
00:54:53Sorry.
00:54:53You've got to be kidding me, haven't you?
00:54:55No, they can complain.
00:54:56D'you think it's going to get overturned?
00:54:58I think they could challenge it.
00:54:59They can challenge it.
00:55:00Well, they're all challenging everything.
00:55:02Ali, have you...
00:55:02It's never going to get...
00:55:04Did you see Emery after it?
00:55:05He was...
00:55:05No wonder.
00:55:06No wonder.
00:55:07No wonder.
00:55:08I don't think it was Ruffey, is it?
00:55:09No, but we look at all these games,
00:55:10you look at the Man City.
00:55:12Can't find the one the goalkeeper
00:55:14gets his hand out.
00:55:14There's nothing you can do about it.
00:55:16Yeah.
00:55:16I just think it's...
00:55:17I know it's a scandalous, but...
00:55:19There's always something
00:55:20that is rearing its ugly head
00:55:22with these things.
00:55:23Anyway, a couple of other things.
00:55:25Liverpool, the fans, the parade.
00:55:27Everybody's parading.
00:55:28Alan Hansen.
00:55:28Crystal Palace are out there.
00:55:29Alan Hansen.
00:55:30Spurs.
00:55:31Then, of course, Liverpool,
00:55:32Alan Hansen with Virgil van Dijk.
00:55:33Who's the better player between the two of them?
00:55:38Different eras.
00:55:39I don't care about...
00:55:39Alan Hansen.
00:55:40Hansen.
00:55:41I would have said Hansen as well.
00:55:42Yeah.
00:55:42Hansen.
00:55:43I didn't see Hansen.
00:55:44Can I give you a wee start,
00:55:45a boy gave me at the weekend,
00:55:47of all the teams that were successful,
00:55:50what their connections were.
00:55:52The teams.
00:55:54Yeah, absolutely.
00:55:55Fantastic.
00:55:55Aberdeen have joined up.
00:55:57Seagulls.
00:55:58Seagulls.
00:55:59Yeah.
00:55:59Seagulls.
00:56:00Yeah.
00:56:01Absolutely.
00:56:01Seagulls are really bad.
00:56:04And of course, listen,
00:56:05it was nice that Liverpool fans
00:56:07finally gave Trent Alexander-Arnold
00:56:10a cheer at the end.
00:56:11And this is what Arnold Slot said
00:56:13on the reception to the player.
00:56:16What an unbelievable half he played.
00:56:19The passes he played were,
00:56:21if you make a highlight of this,
00:56:23probably it's going to take you
00:56:24three, four or five minutes.
00:56:26The ball to Darwin was another level,
00:56:29was next level.
00:56:30So he deserved it.
00:56:33Very happy for him,
00:56:35for everyone in and around the club,
00:56:37that things worked out as they did.
00:56:39And I think everybody could see
00:56:41how difficult he had it after the game.
00:56:44And that tells you how hard it is
00:56:45to leave a club like this.
00:56:48It's not that hard.
00:56:48You're going to break a week in Real Madrid time,
00:56:51are you kidding me?
00:56:52Geez, peace out now.
00:56:54Ange, is he going to be here next season
00:56:56as a Spurs manager?
00:56:57No.
00:56:57No? Sacked?
00:56:58Sacked, yeah.
00:56:59I actually don't know now.
00:57:01I thought, regardless of whether
00:57:03they won it or not,
00:57:04he probably would go.
00:57:05Now I don't know.
00:57:06Now I think, I actually thought
00:57:07there was a shift within the Spurs fans as well.
00:57:11I don't know if he might get
00:57:12the start of the season.
00:57:13I don't know.
00:57:14I think the best thing that could happen
00:57:15to him is to get sacked.
00:57:17Yeah.
00:57:18Or get his money and go somewhere else.
00:57:19I think Ange is going to get
00:57:20another wee tilt at it.
00:57:21I think it's leaning towards that.
00:57:23Yeah, I think he might give him the thrummer.
00:57:25And by the way,
00:57:25this is the first time we've had a chance to see it.
00:57:27Isn't it great?
00:57:28Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmore.
00:57:33Serie A winners.
00:57:35First time in Scudetto history,
00:57:36120 years or something.
00:57:37A Scottish player.
00:57:38Great goal.
00:57:39Great goal.
00:57:39What a goal.
00:57:40Oh, it was fantastic.
00:57:42For a midfield player to get in the box
00:57:44as much as he did.
00:57:45We have talked with Scotland,
00:57:46you know, in modern times,
00:57:49he's their top goal scorer.
00:57:51That says a lot from a midfield player.
00:57:53Yeah, absolutely.
00:57:54And as ever,
00:57:56the Football Show will be back
00:57:57bigger and better next season.
00:57:59Still got the journos coming on Wednesday
00:58:01and then we've got a lot of special programmes

00:58:33Ullapool Hart says,
00:58:34as a Harts man,
00:58:35we don't want that clown in our colours.
00:58:37There you are.
00:58:40I thought it would be you.
00:58:41There you are.
00:58:43That kind of sums it up.
00:58:46Yeah.
00:58:46Thank you to each and every one of you
00:58:48for downloading the podcast,
00:58:50especially.

00:59:14that people want to hear.
00:59:16You know, some things you don't hear about
00:59:18behind the scenes.
00:59:18And I'm sure that you'll get a lot out of them.
00:59:21Yeah, the two of them are great fun.
00:59:22Good laugh.
00:59:23And as I pointed out,
00:59:24great to sit in the company
00:59:25of two former Celtic managers,
00:59:27both who equally hated me
00:59:29with the same kind of a feeling,
00:59:30you know, 50-50,
00:59:31who hated me more.
00:59:33Probably Martin,
00:59:34but still good for a wee bit of vandalism.
00:59:36And some redemption.
00:59:37Yeah, and some redemption.
00:59:39Who knows?
00:59:39I might get redemption from the other lot
00:59:42who are in charge at the moment.
00:59:44You never know.
00:59:45Thank you to you for joining us.

00:59:56From everybody on the football show.
00:59:57Are you going to stand up at the end
00:59:58and kiss the badge?
00:59:58Oh yeah.
00:59:59Well, there you are.
01:00:00That's what happened when Barry was here
01:00:02and they had to get him right out the door.
01:00:03There'll be no badge kissing, Tam.
01:00:06I've stuck to my word.
01:00:07I put the shirt on.
01:00:11Congratulations to all the Aberdeen fans.
01:00:14I said Celtic would cuff Aberdeen.
01:00:17And they didn't.
01:00:19And this is why I'm wearing this
01:00:21for the one and only time.
01:00:22I wouldn't even wear it in the fives.
01:00:24And I've put it on here today.
01:00:25I've taken it in the neck, Ruffey.
01:00:26I've stood up and stood by my word.
01:00:28Still think we should get a photograph.
01:00:30Yeah, absolutely.
01:00:31We need a photograph.
01:00:31Full length.
01:00:34Thank you to Ali.
