00:00The tank zombie that appears in the pilot episode of The Walking Dead almost had a story of his own.
00:06The idea came from Frank Darabont, the creator of the series,
00:09and the actor who played that zombie was Sam Witwer, who revealed everything in interviews.
00:15The episode would have shown the fall of Atlanta from the point of view of a young American soldier.
00:20The story would take place days before Rick's arrival,
00:24when the military was still trying to contain the outbreak and protect civilians.
00:29This soldier was part of a reinforcement unit that would be deployed to Atlanta to assist the troops on the ground,
00:35but chaos would quickly take over.
00:39Communication would break down, the infected would take over the streets,
00:42and one by one the soldiers would be killed,
00:45until the young soldier was the last one from his battalion still standing.
00:50At a certain point in the story, civilians trying to flee the city would reach a barricade
00:54where soldiers were blocking the way.
00:55Under orders from their superiors, the soldiers would open fire on the civilians in cold blood,
01:01just like what happened at the hospital where Rick was in a coma.
01:06Among the chaos were Andrea and Amy, who would be saved by Dale,
01:10appearing unexpectedly with his RV.
01:14The protagonist of the episode would also try to help the civilians,
01:18but would end up being bitten on the arm by a zombie.
01:21Later on, with little ammunition and suffering from the effects of the bite,
01:26the man would be cornered and, with few options left, would crawl under the tank,
01:30just like Rick did.
01:31We reprise the scene from the pilot, where Rick crawls in the tank and there's a zombie there,
01:38and if you look closely, I played that zombie because we were setting up this prequel that we were going to do.
01:44So, if you watch the pilot of Walking Dead, that's me in the tank as the zombie who goes,
01:49and Rick blasts him, and then he gets deafened,
01:52and then he gets that grenade which saves them at the end of the season.
01:55Well, we're going to tell the history of that grenade.
01:57We're going to tell, also, how another character who's being introduced in the second season,
02:02how he comes to a certain thing.
02:04We're going to do all this cool stuff.
02:06Inside the tank, the soldier would take a deep breath,
02:10pull a grenade from his pocket, and consider ending it all.
02:13But before doing so, he would place the grenade on the shelf and stay there, reflecting on his life.
02:19Sometime later, weakened by the fever, he would pick up the grenade to blow himself up.
02:23But the fever would overcome him before he could do it.
02:27Not very happy about it, Sam concluded by saying the episode didn't happen due to production budget issues.
02:34Sam also mentioned that Darabont had countless ideas,
02:38but unfortunately, they were lost along with him after his dismissal.
02:43Not doing it now. You know, not happening.
02:46Why? Because AMC wanted to save a few bucks.
02:49Besides, you know, so that is just one example of the kind of cool, awesome forethought
02:58that this guy's put into this show that is now absolutely for naught.
03:02Now, for me, it doesn't make much difference to me.
03:05I'm busy doing being human.
03:06We're going to schedule things around stuff.
03:09And, you know, I'm not lamenting the loss of the job.
03:12What I'm lamenting is the loss of an amazing idea.
03:14And there are dozens and dozens of amazing ideas just like that that are now gone.
03:22The conclusion is that The Walking Dead missed the chance to produce a great episode.
03:27Anyway, that was the story of the tank zombie from the first episode of The Walking Dead.
