00:00Carlos, 13 pro seasons, working for others mostly, did you come to the Giro thinking you might win a stage?
00:08No, absolutely not. And actually I was very happy for that because I came to this Giro knowing that my role was for full support for Pedersen and Ciccone.
00:17And I was super happy with that and actually I was enjoying this Giro the most because it was the first one I didn't have the ambition maybe to win a stage, you know.
00:25And then everything changed yesterday, like we lost Chico and today I said, okay, maybe I don't want to do it for me, but I have to do it for the team.
00:37I only got one victory before, was in Dauphiné, was in the same situation the day before we lost our leader.
00:42And today I was riding with my mind and my legs in them, especially in Ciccone because I know how much he worked for this race, how many sacrifices he did.
00:51And yeah, you know, when you are a helper, you need to be there to help them. And when they are not here, you need to be also for the team.
00:57And today I was falling with all my heart for this team.
01:00So with 45 kilometers to go, did your mind tell you that you could do it? Did your legs tell you that you could do it?
01:08Yes, when I saw the, I was not in the original breakaway, actually I was trying so hard. We could put Vacek and Conrad and I missed by like one rider to be there.
01:17And I say like, yeah, chances gone, but I keep focused. I always like to think that everything happens for a reason. And the reason was that I didn't have to win that break.
01:26So I still hold on in the group of favorites. And I saw in the top of Grappa were not more than 10, 15 guys. And I had the legs to be there.
01:33So when we were together down there, I say today is my day. Like with the legs, I have to go for the victory. And also I knew I have to go it from far because I'm not really fast.
01:43I'm actually quite slow, but my, my diesel engine is there. I've been preparing this year very well with a lot of confidence from the team and I had to do it for them.
01:53Thank you very much. Thanks to you.
01:55Tell us about your quick reaction when Egan Bernal attacked on Monte Grappa. Were you expecting it?
02:00I, in this moment, we were with the team setting a pace and a little bit taking time without really wanting to take time with the breakaway, but the team was amazing.
02:12And then they come like a train and did his job to try to attack. No, I can see in some reactions with these guys from Ineos that Aresman will try to make a gap and Egan will try.
02:24And then I try to understand when he, he will go and go quickly. And then when I went with him, I see Carapaz and obviously I have another guys in GC behind and I just try to roll with them.
02:39I mean, because obviously there are GC riders and just stay in the front. Don't take a lot of risk and be in the race always.
02:48Do you realize it's been one week now in the Malia Rosa? What is your spirit before the last week?
02:55Ah, it's incredible. It really is an amazing dream. And I can realize that I am here fighting every day and having confidence about the things that I want to do in these days. It's so hard. But with this team, I think everything is possible.
03:17Do you also feel the support of your country and maybe your continent?
03:21Yeah, of course, it's incredible. Imagine how a whole country just for you. It's incredible. And the continent is always supporting me. Also the guys out there and the bunch. I am the new guy and I cannot believe I have a lot of respect or I don't know. For me, they are my idols. And now I need to race against them. And yeah, it's such a big dream for me.
03:54Matt, every day you get questioned about yourself, but today someone special has won the stage. Who is Carlos Verona for you?
04:02One of the best teammates you can find in this peloton.
04:06He joined your team quite recently. How did you discover him as one of the best teammates?
04:13And now it's what I think it's fall season. He's here. So it's not recently, you know, he was here for some years already. But Carlos is such a hardworking guy and he's always a reliable guy for us.
04:26And he's always there to help. If it's uphill, downhill on the flat, whatever it is, he's there and he's always ready to do his work. So to see a guy like him winning a stage in the Gito is it's emotional for all of us. And it's it's yeah, it's really hard to explain. But it's you know, this to see him winning this stage means more for me than myself winning the last stage.
04:52Have you ever told him you should try yourself? Yeah. Now with Chico leaving this morning, of course, we had to change the plans on a day like today. So everyone was racing open minded and was grabbing for their chance.
05:04So a hassle for really grabbing this chance and then winning also. That's really impressive. Thank you very much. Thank you. Lorenzo, it's not all about the points. How important was it? How symbolic was it for you to crest Montegrappa first?
05:19The first goal for me for today is win in Montegrappa and after go for win the stage. We stay four in the breakaway. So we we stay in strong team by Scarro I think arriving in front. So in three positions. So it's good that we take too much point for come as Scarro arriving in podium. So good day for Astana.
05:43It's the end of the second week. Is it very comfortable to have 150 points lead in the KOM?
05:51Yes, but in the third week there are a lot of points and me I want to take the other iconic climb and try to win one stage. So it's not all about the point. It's also about iconic climbs. Yes. Thank you.
