A neighbour talks of his shock as people bang in his door to wake him as his neighbours house goes up in flames. Broadway, Walsall.
Transcript
00:00So we're at the scene of a fire in Broadway, Walsall, and Adam, you live next door.
00:04I live right next door, yeah.
00:05Um, close call really, I mean, you had neighbours banging on your door, yeah, in the early hours.
00:10Unbelievable, deep sleep, couldn't believe it, absolute smacking on the doors.
00:14Yeah.
00:15And I look outside the window, and there's just a ray of smoke, and we have LED lights, and you just couldn't see a thing.
00:21Well, yeah, because they're banging on your door going, fire in the house, fire in the house.
00:24So you're thinking, is it my house?
00:26I thought it was my house, I thought my dad's going to kill me.
00:28My wife, I was terrified, so I got up in the house, and I didn't see any fire.
00:31I ran outside, and I looked to the left, and I said it was the next door neighbours, and I thought, oh, jeez.
00:36Yeah, and you said when the roof collapsed on this, it was like a fireball going on.
00:40Like a volcano, it was just erupting up north, you couldn't believe it.
00:44Well, your house is actually adjoining, but thankfully doesn't appear to be any damage to yours.
00:48Yeah, well, thanks for the fire service, actually, they did an amazing job.
00:50They put up a nice little shield, and they really, you know, they stood on top of the roof, and they put out all the fire, and they protected the house.
00:55It was beautiful, beautiful stuff.
00:57Yeah, yeah.
00:58And this house, what do we know, it's been empty for a bit, hasn't it?
01:01Yeah, yeah.
01:02So, thankfully, no one, as we understand it, no one was injured in it, that's our understanding at the minute.
01:05Yeah, nobody was injured, but no one's been home for a while there, so.
01:08Has there been any issues, to your knowledge, with people kind of breaking in, staying in copper and white malarkey?
01:13No.
01:14No, not that I know of, no.
01:15Yeah.
01:16The house is pretty open anyways, you can see the side entrance is just wide open.
01:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:19So, people can come in and go as they please, but nothing that I've seen.
01:22Yeah.
01:23And does it, I mean, it must have shook you up.
01:25Oh, 100%.
01:26Terrifying.
01:27You haven't been back to sleep, haven't you since then?
01:28No, no, no, at all.
01:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:30It's better than any alarm clock, that is.
01:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:32And does it make you kind of reflect on, you know, are you thinking, you know what, have
01:36I got smoke alarms in my house?
01:37I better check the batteries.
01:38Yeah, yeah.
01:39Does it make you kind of reflective?
01:40We discussed putting smoke alarms outside.
01:41I don't know how effective they are, but my dad said, you know, just in case, because
01:44you never know, one day you're asleep and something could happen next door and you don't even notice.
01:48And if it was for those girls that came and knocked on the door, I'd probably still be sleeping now.
01:52Yeah.
01:53And this was the early hours, wasn't it?
01:54It was about five in the morning.
01:55Yeah, yeah.
01:56Just the dust.
01:57Yeah.
01:58Well, we'll be glad that you're safe and your house is alright, Adam.
02:00Thank you very much, sir.
02:01So, close call, but thankfully everyone's okay today.
02:04Thank you very much, sir.
02:05Appreciate it.
