00:00Listín Diario presents Sunday Reflections.
00:30Legislators and other actors to curtail these rights.
00:33And yes, I deliberately speak of both rights together.
00:38Because in this digital age, where the Internet and its technological derivatives have blurred
00:43borders and redefined paradigms, it is urgent to reclaim the full dimensions of these freedoms.
00:49They are not the same, but they are equally essential.
00:53In 2016, with the Salta Declaration, heir to the Chapultepec principles, we reinforced
00:58our commitment.
01:00Then in Córdoba, we approved its second version, emphasizing something essential.
01:05Social media activity also deserves protection.
01:09In short, we advocate for censorship-free regulations.
01:13The current situation is bleak.
01:14Latin America is witnessing an accelerated hollowing out of its democracies.
01:19Regimes that were born legitimate have been denatured.
01:23Authoritarianism is normalized under a cloak of collective silence.
01:27At the same time, a perverse discourse has been woven that equates the professional press
01:32with digital chaos, demonizing both equally.
01:35We are accused of being complicit in disinformation, polarization and lies.
01:41Social media, that uncontrollable torrent, drags media outlets that still defend rigorous
01:45journalism into their currents.
01:47The result is a sick democracy and journalism under suspicion.
01:51But the greatest danger is not just governments.
01:53Today, Fortech giants decide what to think, how to act and what to know.
01:59Their algorithms filter, bias and mediate reality, usurping the traditional role of the press.
02:06Their power even overshadows the state.
02:09This is the true Sword of Damocles, a handful of companies determining the fate of freedom,
02:15both of expression and of the press, and therefore of democracy.
02:20How can we resist?
02:21By recognizing that the world has changed, audiences are no longer the same.
02:27Journalism must reinvent itself without abdicating its essence.
02:31Defending these freedoms is more arduous, but not impossible.
02:34It requires clarity, courage, and above all the conviction that without a free press,
02:39there is no free society.
