Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's Kia MVP Presentation On TNT! 🏆
Transcript
00:00Shaq, I would like you to do the honors, if you would.
00:05Would you announce, and you can put your mic down.
00:08No, sir.
00:09Okay, and I'll use my mic to let you make the announcement.
00:19The Kia MVP belongs to Shea Gidges Alexander from Oklahoma City.
00:24Well done.
00:25Thank you very much.
00:26And so, well-deserved.
00:27Yes, absolutely.
00:28At the age of 26, his first MVP award.
00:37He's finished fifth in the voting.
00:39He has finished second in the voting last year.
00:42And this year, he's the MVP.
00:44Wow.
00:45It's beautiful, man.
00:46I think, you know, when you look at it, he's been trending this direction since he came into the league.
00:50We played him in the playoffs when he was with the Clippers in 19.
00:53And you knew he'd be special to reach this point.
00:56It's all the work that go in, and he doesn't.
00:58And he is ready to talk to us just moments after the announcement was made.
01:05And SGA, Ernie Johnson here with Shaq and Charles and Kenny and Draymond Green.
01:14We congratulate you, number one.
01:16Nice going.
01:17Very happy for you.
01:18Thank you so much.
01:19Appreciate it, fellas.
01:20So, who was with you when you got the news?
01:23My teammates behind me, my family, my wife, my son, my brother, my close ones.
01:32Yeah.
01:33The group of people that helped me get here.
01:36Look, you've finished fifth before, you've finished second last year.
01:41How much did you actually think about it when it came down and everybody's talking about,
01:45oh, well, it's one-two with you and the joker.
01:48How much did you allow yourself to think about the possibility of being the MVP?
01:53Yeah, you try so hard throughout the season to not think about it and just worry about playing basketball
01:59and getting better and trying to win games.
02:02But as a competitor and as a kid dreaming about the game, it's always in the back of your mind.
02:07And I'm very thankful to be this side of the, I guess, the ballot.
02:12But none of it's possible without the guys behind me.
02:15The amount of games we won and the fashion that we won the games is so impressive
02:19and it's probably the main reason why I get the award.
02:21So, without them, it's not possible.
02:23Shea Shaq here.
02:24I took a lot of flack last year for saying you should have won it last year,
02:26and I thought you got robbed last year.
02:28So, being that I said that, did you have some animosity towards the voters last year
02:33and say, you know what, I'm going to show the world that I'm the greatest player in the NBA?
02:40To be honest with you, I use it as motivation.
02:44There's voters every year. That will never change.
02:47And last year, all it meant was that more people thought I should have won than should have won.
02:53And this year, I wanted to change the narrative and have it flipped.
02:57And I think I did a good job of that, and that's why I get the award.
03:00Shea, Draymond, congratulations.
03:02Just wanted to ask you.
03:03Appreciate it.
03:04A couple years ago, you've been there since 2019, Trey.
03:08You came there from the Clippers.
03:10And a couple years ago, it started to seem that you had turned that corner
03:13and was becoming a 28, 30-a-night guy.
03:17And the team was still kind of coming along.
03:19And there started to be a little chatter on like,
03:21man, is it time for Shea to force his way out of there,
03:24force himself to a situation where he could compete for a championship level.
03:28Never heard an inkling come from you.
03:30You embraced it the entire time.
03:32Just talk to me about that journey of growing with, drafting guys, growing with guys,
03:36and then you kind of being the old head there and showing your guys the way to go
03:40and finally getting to this point.
03:43Yeah, I always like to focus on the things that I can control.
03:47And I think that's how I got to this point.
03:49So all the chit-chatter and what's going on in the league, I have no control over.
03:54So I just try to keep my head down, work super hard.
03:57And the guys around me do the same thing.
03:59And it made it easy to grow, easy to get to this point because of that.
04:02And I think that mentality is going to help us keep growing in the future.
04:06Well, Shea, number one, congratulations, man.
04:09You guys have had a fabulous season.
04:11Your depth on your team is incredible.
04:14I watched that game last night.
04:16Who the hell is number 34 who came out there and started kicking butt last night?
04:20Because I didn't see him a lot.
04:22I didn't see him a lot against Denver.
04:24And all of a sudden, I says, man, that number 34, I ain't seen him.
04:27And he is flat out balling.
04:29Hey, man.
04:31That's Uncle Kenny.
04:32He was flat out balling, man.
04:34I just tell him, I was like, man, they, how do coach, how does coach,
04:39because coaching has something to do with it.
04:41Your coach is fantastic.
04:42How do he keep your guys so sharp?
04:45Because if you're not playing, but when they call your number, you're ready.
04:49How does coach keep him and the rest of the guys who didn't play a lot against Denver,
04:54now all of a sudden, in the biggest game of the season, he come in and he's flat out balling?
04:59Yeah.
05:00Coach does a really good job of that.
05:02The first meeting every year, he comes in and he says, nobody gets stuck with the lineup.
05:06It's going to change all the time.
05:07Sometimes you're going to play.
05:08Sometimes you're going to not.
05:09You're not going to not play.
05:10And he's up front with guys.
05:11And when he does that, it gives guys a slate and they understand what's to come for the
05:15rest of the season.
05:16And we have no choice but to be ready.
05:17And we know that all across the board, no matter who you are.
05:20We just control what we control.
05:22Kay works every day, whether he's playing or not.
05:25And when the time comes, he's ready for it.
05:27You know, firstly, congratulations, Shay.
05:29Great award.
05:30You know, we got two guys who've actually won the award up here with Shaquille and Charles
05:36and then myself and Draymond have been teammates for guys who've won that award.
05:41And as a teammate, you know, we always felt that we were part of that.
05:46As you see your guys behind you, you know, in this journey, when you look back, there's
05:52probably two or three guys that you go, man, they've seen the best and they've seen the
05:57worst.
05:58And even, it's funny because Shay, when Akeem Olajuwon won the award, he made us take
06:03the award and hold it for him.
06:05And so, who are those guys that have seen you at your best and your worth that has gone
06:10through this journey?
06:11Some of the guys are new and some of the guys have been there for a longer time.
06:15Yeah, to start, I'm going to have to say Lou.
06:18Like Lou, Lou was with me my first year in OKC.
06:22So the last six years, he was on the team when we were winning 10 games a season.
06:27To 25 games, to 40, to now 68, 70.
06:32He's seen the best version of me, the worst version of me, the pissed off version of me,
06:37the happy version of me.
06:38We've been through thick and thin in the NBA.
06:40And to have him on a journey has been special.
06:42Last thing, SGA, would you be interested in knowing the tally and how this went with
06:53the vote count?
06:54Can I ask Lou Dort a question?
06:56Hold on one second.
06:57I'm trying to give him the results.
06:59I've got an important question for Lou Dort.
07:01No.
07:02Chuckster, please.
07:03Go ahead.
07:04Go ahead.
07:05Shea, 100, 100, 100 voters.
07:08You got 71 first place votes to 29 for Joker.
07:13And then second place votes, you just reversed those numbers.
07:16But the final tally, 913 to 787.
07:20So it was believed to be, supposed to be one of the closest of all time.
07:24But that is not the way it turned out.
07:26Now, do you have a question for Lou Dort?
07:29Yes.
07:30Shea, I saw this stat.
07:32Lou Dort has never made an all defensive team.
07:35That's crazy.
07:36Yeah, we're going to have to change that pretty soon.
07:39I said a couple weeks ago, he's the best perimeter defender in the NBA.
07:45He's the best perimeter.
07:47And when I saw that stat, I said, this dude ain't never made an all defensive team.
07:51That's one of the worst stats I've ever seen, man.
07:54So you tell that young guy congratulations and keep doing his thing.
07:57I will.
07:58I will for sure.
07:59Without him, we're not the defense we are and we all know that.
08:02The proof is in the pudding and he'll get what he deserves pretty soon.
08:05Tell Kenridge Williams we know who he is.
08:07And the last thing, the last thing.
08:09Look, we've seen a million post-game interviews with you guys this year.
08:13And it's never been this sedate.
08:17It's never been this quiet.
08:18These guys are usually all over you.
08:20Is this the way it was when you heard the word too?
08:22Yeah, they're keeping it tamed right now.
08:26But we'll go up here in a few minutes, a few minutes.
08:29Yes.
08:30Shea Gilgis, Alexander.
08:32Happy for you.
08:33Congratulations, Shea.
08:34Congratulations.
08:35Congratulations.
08:36Appreciate it.
08:37See you in the finals.
08:38Tell that dude with the white wristband, he ugly.
08:43Right behind you over your wristband.
08:45Thanks.
08:46We appreciate you.
