00:00you shot what is without question one of the most remarkable star wars sequences ever which
00:06is the vader scene the hallway scene from from rogue one uh did you ever get to go out to a
00:12theater and and experience a fan like an audience of fans witnessing that for the first time
00:17i did you know i did um gareth and i and diego i think we all hung out on the first night that
00:26came out and we all were were hopping uh around the the theaters standing at the back and just
00:33watching the experience i think we introduced a couple um and then ones that we went in late and
00:39just watched and i i did and it was a really interesting experience and and i i've recounted
00:46this story a number of times because when we shot that because you know as you know with that film
00:52there was a number of pickups here and there which there should be with with any film that's
00:56trying to find its feet like that there needs to be kind of um refinements to scenes it needs to be
01:01all those things which there was um but that was a super late addition to the film and i remember the
01:07sequence we shot before that was really good before that even existed in the world was really good and
01:14i'm not going to talk too much about it because it doesn't matter actually it's gone and i remember
01:19i think gareth rang me and said hey we've got this sequence and it's it's going to end the film
01:23and i went oh that means what we've done is gone right and that's such a shame they went yeah but
01:29but but hear me out this is going to be much better and so i heard him out and i went yeah baby that is
01:35going to be much better and so this is the point where i remember going like you know i'll happily admit
01:41defeat or happily admit that i'm wrong um and i remember my first reaction was a hundred percent wrong
01:47because when we finally got the the the lighting right that introduction of ada because remember
01:55like when he lights a lightsaber in front of him that should front light him because that's what
02:00lightsabers do sure if you watch carefully it's he's silhouetted it's a total it's false it's total
02:06false lighting it's like lightsaber comes on and then there's a light behind him i don't want to
02:11destroy it for the for the for the people at home but only a cinematographer would
02:16the lighting is the lighting is wrong as wrong can be it's false and wrong but i remember we we did it
02:25the correct way first and we just went oh like it was like a butt like a like a balloon deflating
02:32believe it or not believe it or not vader can look a little bit weak if you don't shoot him correctly
02:41okay and we you know we shot him we shot him obviously for the film before that and we
02:45discovered that but we'd never done the whole reveal before and so you know when we first did
02:50the reveal on on set it was like oh this is not good oh this is not this is not what this film
02:57deserves and i remember we worked on it for like 10 or 15 minutes and got the levels right and then
03:03we shot and i remember the first take that we did it and it worked we were both like oh it was like
03:08being five again like it was like being five and seeing vader for the first time in a new hope you
03:15know when he comes in through the smoke and yeah that's how it felt and yes and i'm very happy to
03:22have experienced that first time i'd love that
