00:00Jim from The Office is asking us to plant corn for a movie he's directing, and I was like,
00:05yeah, I know how that sounds, but I do need corn planted immediately.
00:08And they did.
00:08And they did?
00:09And they did.
00:10Hi, I'm Natalie Portman.
00:11I'm John Krasinski.
00:13I'm Isa Gonzalez.
00:14We filmed in a lot of locations, so let's see if we can remember them.
00:21Here we go.
00:22So, I'm not going to show you.
00:24Yeah, don't show me the...
00:25You strike me like you're a cheater sometimes.
00:27Wow, that is right off the bat.
00:29I just...
00:30Can we steal?
00:31Yes.
00:33She's already competing.
00:34If he doesn't know it, I know that for him.
00:35She's like, I know.
00:37I watched that the other night.
00:38Oh, I know what this is.
00:39That has to be Niagara Falls on The Office.
00:41Yes.
00:42And that is on the episode called Niagara, I think.
00:45And that is the Maid in the Mist, where we actually did all that guerrilla style.
00:49They didn't know that we were going to be coming on the boat shooting a scene from The Office.
00:52No way.
00:53Yeah, only the head guy on the boat knew.
00:55And so we all ran on, and people were just taking a tour of Niagara Falls,
00:58and I was proposing to Jenna on the boat, and people were like, what's happening?
01:04And then by the time they knew, we were done.
01:06Because they're that talented.
01:08Can you imagine if they were like, nope, that's Fountain of Youth, and I'm like, oh.
01:11No, that was one of the most emotional episodes, because it was finally us getting married,
01:17and it was a big episode that we were all really nervous about, and I remember that was such a great thing to shoot,
01:23because the sort of guerrilla style energy made us not be nervous.
01:27We were sort of focused on getting on a boat in time, and how close can we get to the water, and things like that.
01:32And we had such a blast.
01:33I do remember, I think it was me, or maybe it was Jenna.
01:37One of us was very sick.
01:39Like, somebody had the flu or something, and so our kiss wasn't really a kiss.
01:42Oh, wow.
01:43What was it then?
01:43We did sort of like a twist the head, and it looked like we were kissing, but we were like three inches away, yeah.
01:48Was it me?
01:49Did I have the flu?
01:50You had the flu.
01:51Oh, yeah.
01:52So romantic, right?
01:53Yeah.
01:54Let's just ruin that episode for everybody.
01:57Mwah, mwah, mwah.
02:01What is this, girl?
02:03Whoa.
02:04And where, why can't we go right now?
02:06Where in the world are you?
02:07The news is, I don't have my glasses, so you could be.
02:09Is that Thor 4?
02:10Is that Asgard?
02:11Yes!
02:12It is!
02:13That's not like what the actual place looks like.
02:16The actual place is just like a golf course.
02:19Is that true?
02:20You're like, it could be Cabo, really.
02:21Thor loves golf.
02:22Yeah.
02:23That's amazing.
02:24It's a golf course in Australia that looks like Asgard.
02:28I love Sydney.
02:29I love Australia.
02:30Would be there all the time if I could.
02:32The nature is amazing.
02:34The beaches.
02:35Yeah.
02:35It's like some of the best beaches in the world that are in a major city.
02:40And then you also have all of this like culture, like art and opera and restaurants.
02:45It just wins.
02:46It wins.
02:47It wins.
02:47It wins.
02:48Let's go.
02:48Yeah, let's go.
02:49You know what?
02:50Let's go right now.
02:50It's so nice.
02:52Caught some Vegemite?
02:53Well.
02:55And then there's Vegemite.
02:56Yeah.
02:56Um, you know, I'll do it.
02:59I'll do Vegemite, but I don't crave Vegemite.
03:04Nice.
03:04Great, great way to answer.
03:05Good political answer.
03:06Political, yes.
03:07But like avocado toast, they invented it.
03:12Yeah.
03:12They did?
03:13Did they really?
03:14I thought it was a Californian.
03:15I thought it was someone in L.A. for sure.
03:17I mean, it started there and now it's everywhere.
03:22Yeah.
03:22Thank you, Australia.
03:23Thank you, Australia.
03:24Thank you, Australia.
03:24Avocado toast.
03:25Yeah.
03:26Yes.
03:29It's the heart of London and this is Three Body Problem.
03:35And we filmed right after COVID and so it was the time that you were getting tested constantly.
03:40And we shot this show for 12 months.
03:43And so everything was kind of like adjustable in the sets, but we all knew that there was one day that it was like unmovable.
03:50And it was because we were shutting down completely the center of London.
03:55And so it was booked for months and we were getting tested every single day.
03:59And I was like, ready to go.
04:00And I get tested.
04:01And the day before I get COVID.
04:04I get COVID.
04:06When you have Piccadilly Circus.
04:07When you closed down Piccadilly Circus.
04:09It was a whole mess because they had to double me and find someone because they couldn't cancel the location that looked like me, had my height, and it didn't work.
04:19And we had to reshoot it all over again in the back lot of Shepparton.
04:23Oh, no.
04:25And it was a nightmare.
04:27It's a production nightmare that you never knew.
04:30It's just like you having the flu.
04:31Yeah, exactly.
04:32You would never know.
04:33And now I've ruined it for you, too.
04:34Yours is worse.
04:35You're welcome.
04:36No, I'm kidding.
04:36Yeah.
04:37This is so hard.
04:39This is like abstract.
04:41Oh, I know what this is.
04:41Immediately, you know this.
04:43My favorite story about this was as I was writing the script, no one knew what I was thinking.
04:48So I went on Zillow and found this house to write for.
04:52You told me this story.
04:53And they ended up shooting at the house that I found on Zillow.
04:57So thank you, Zillow.
04:59This is Pauling, New York.
05:01That is the location of Quiet Place.
05:05And one of my other favorite stories was they grew pumpkins on this land, not corn.
05:11And so when we told them that we needed corn, they went, no problem.
05:14You need eight months for that.
05:16And I went, right.
05:17So we would have to start.
05:18And they went, last week.
05:19And I was like, oh, my God.
05:20And so we had to get Paramount.
05:22And I hadn't directed a big movie.
05:24And they were like, so Jim from The Office is asking us to plant corn for a movie he's directing?
05:28And I was like, yeah, I know how that sounds.
05:31But I do need corn planted immediately.
05:33And they did.
05:33And they did?
05:34And they did.
05:34Damn.
05:35We got so much value out of the kids running through the corn.
05:38Yeah.
05:39And us being in the corn all the time.
05:40So it was awesome.
05:42There's no substitute for practical being there.
05:44That's true.
05:45Plant your corn, guys.
05:46Plant the corn.
05:47That's the lesson from this.
05:48Yeah, that's my lesson.
05:49Yes.
05:50I mean, for me, the most difficult day was probably, I was nervous to shoot my wife giving fake birth in the movie.
05:57Oh, wow.
05:58Yes.
05:58And then it turned out she was such a pro, she did that whole scene in one take.
06:02Wow.
06:03And I remember before the movie, I was looking for editing spaces.
06:07And I went into this editing bay, and Rob Marshall was editing Mary Poppins in there.
06:12And he said, when do you start?
06:13And I said, next week.
06:14And he said, oh, man, you're going to see.
06:16And I said, I know.
06:17She's so great.
06:17And he went, nope, you don't know yet.
06:19You'll see.
06:19And I went, nah, I'm married to her.
06:21So I went, nope, not until you're on set will you know why she's as good as she is.
06:25And I remember that was the day in the bathtub scene.
06:28I was like, oh, my God.
06:29That scene is so powerful.
06:31She was amazing.
06:31She was amazing.
06:32And then when we called cut, she went, by the way, what is for life?
06:35Uh-huh.
06:35Like, she just turned it off right away.
06:37I could see that.
06:38Okay.
06:39Oh, God.
06:40One of my favorites.
06:42Oh, yeah.
06:43You should steal this one.
06:45You know this.
06:46It's the movie I, like, geeked out.
06:47Yeah.
06:48We both geeked out on you for.
06:50Really?
06:51Yeah.
06:52The Wachowski.
06:53Yay!
06:54The V for Vendetta, obvious.
06:56Yes!
06:57Yes!
06:59We shot in Berlin.
07:01We shot in Babelsberg.
07:02The old studios there, yeah.
07:04And obviously we did some exteriors in London.
07:06The first memory that pops into my head, well, obviously shaving my head.
07:10That was really wild.
07:11Um, I really, like, got pumped up for it and then was very surprised by the whole feeling
07:23of having a shaved head.
07:24It was really, like, the first time I felt rain.
07:27Wow.
07:27Oh, wow.
07:28How old were you?
07:28Wait, was that shot the first time you had rain on your head?
07:31When they did that shot and it rained on you?
07:32No.
07:33It was, like, it was just after we did it.
07:36Like walking home.
07:37In the street walking home and it was raining.
07:39And I was just like, wow, this is insane.
07:43Wow.
07:43So cool.
07:44Days and I nerded out on her during our movie.
07:46Crazy.
07:46It was, like, a little bit too much.
07:47Yeah.
07:48I think we probably overwhelmed with this.
07:49That's kind of my eternal experience with that movie.
07:51Yeah, exactly.
07:51I'm like, I need to stop speaking.
07:53I personally think that movie changed the game.
07:56Totally.
07:56I remember watching that movie and feeling like something changed.
07:59You were able to do something that I didn't know you could do before.
08:02100%.
08:02Which was really good storytelling.
08:04Dark, fun.
08:06With performances, but interesting and deep and really a bending, shaping movie in that era.
08:14It's the only movie you've done, right?
08:15That's it.
08:15Yeah, that's it.
08:16Okay, great.
08:17Would you shave your head again?
08:18Reunion screening.
08:19I don't think so.
08:20Because I have curly hair.
08:22You do?
08:22I do.
08:23I know.
08:24You do.
08:24I lie.
08:24I blow it out, but when it's short, when it grows back and it's this long, it just
08:29looks like a carpet's before it.
08:30I remember that era when your hair was growing, actually, and you had it quite.
08:33But it's cute.
08:34It's so good.
08:34Well, it was cute when they flat-ironed it, but when it was just me on a Tuesday, I just
08:41looked like a little boy.
08:41It was not it.
08:42It was not working.
08:43I looked like a little boy.
08:45Shaved head is cool.
08:47It was cool.
08:47Bob is cool.
08:49In between.
08:50Not so much.
08:51Not cool.
08:52I'm sorry.
08:55Wait, what's happening?
09:00It's Fountain of Youth.
09:04This is Fountain of Youth.
09:06No, no, to be fair, to be fair, but I got confused because the movie's not out yet.
09:10It looks a little bit like a location that we did in The Grey, another Guy Ritchie movie,
09:14but it is Fountain of Youth.
09:16It also doesn't have the pyramids in it, which I think is kind of misleading.
09:18Yeah, that's out of there.
09:19I was like, this looks like Mexico.
09:20I'm like thinking, is this Mexico?
09:22It's not fair.
09:22I'm definitely not in Sicario.
09:24I was like, that is his wife.
09:26I was like, I wish I was.
09:28That's not me.
09:29Yeah, this is Fountain of Youth, and this is Cairo, I guess, right?
09:32Well, the thing that's so wild is that there's like pyramids on one side, and then full city
09:36on the other.
09:37You did it on purpose to trick me, didn't you?
09:39Yeah, this is Fountain of Youth.
09:40She's like, and by the way, it worked.
09:43To be fair, we should say that we did not film inside one of the seven wonders of the world.
09:49We did not touch anything.
09:51Nothing happened.
09:52Nothing got destroyed.
09:53It's intact.
09:54You're saying that like there's news out there that there is.
09:57I would be, because I watched it, and I thought people are going to think, wow, they went
10:02in, because it's obvious that we're there, and they destroyed.
10:05I'd be kind of angry.
10:06Oh, gotcha.
10:07Like, are they doing these movies?
10:08But no, everything was protected, and we never touched it.
10:10The rest of the inside is amazing sets that were built in London.
10:14I mean, the pyramids is pretty hard to beat.
10:16Cairo was amazing, and I got to sneak down for 24 hours to Luxor, which was, oh, my God.
10:22That was mind-blowing to actually, it's hard to process, really.
10:26There's a wonderful experience where you walk through this temple that's narrated by like
10:30Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and it genuinely helped.
10:34You were like, okay, if they're telling me what's going on, then I can process all this.
10:38It's just, it's amazing.
10:40I also really fell in love with Vienna.
10:42Yeah.
10:43Vienna was spectacular.
10:45It's beautiful.
10:46It has like all my favorite artists there.
10:49The cafe thing is so beautiful.
10:50There's music everywhere, and it's such a beautiful city.
10:54I'd never been before.
10:56How many languages do you speak?
10:58Not that many.
10:58It's over-reported.
11:00I speak English, Hebrew, and I'm like pretty good at French, and that's it.
11:05Asa speaks many.
11:07No, I'm in the same place as you.
11:10Spanish, English, Italian, and I understand French.
11:15How about you?
11:16Just good old American English.
11:18No, you speak Spanish, too.
11:20I used to speak Spanish.
11:21Yeah, he just is.
11:22Once you speak.
11:23It's always there.
11:24I just need to unlock it again.
11:24I should have spoken with you.
11:25Claro que si, deberíamos hablar español.
11:27Whoa, too fast.
11:28Too fast.
11:29This is for me.
11:34Is that Bogota?
11:36Is that Bogota, Colombia?
11:37That was phenomenal.
11:39Jack Ryan has been basically a travel show in disguise.
11:43You've been doing this forever, actually.
11:45Yeah, it's been amazing.
11:46It's in his contract.
11:47Exactly.
11:48Only travel shows and movies adjacent.
11:50Only amazing places, or I won't show up.
11:51Yeah.
11:51I will.
11:52I'll show up.
11:53Did you get to go around Colombia?
11:55Yeah, we went around Colombia.
11:56Bogota also has some of the best food.
11:58In the world.
11:58In the world.
11:59Obsessed.
11:59It's unbelievable.
12:01And then the last week, we got to go shoot one thing down in Cartagena, and that was unbelievable.
12:07Am I saying it wrong?
12:07No, Cartagena.
12:09That's fine.
12:09Okay, great.
12:09That's perfect.
12:10That's fine.
12:10That's fine.
12:12It's doable.
12:13That's okay.
12:14Yeah, if you're going to Burger King, that'll work fine.
12:16But they have this huge fortress that the whole city's inside, and it's amazing.
12:19I have a really good Bogota list for you.
12:22Do you?
12:22Yes.
12:22I've never been.
12:23I'm dying to go.
12:24I will send it to you whenever you want.
12:26I will take the list.
12:27I have a ton of lists for both of you.
12:28You can just have it and save it in New York City.
12:30Yes, please.
12:30Great.
12:30I like making travel lists.
12:34I know this one.
12:35Oh.
12:35Oh.
12:36This is Lincoln Center in New York City from Black Swan.
12:40I mean, first of all, to shoot at Lincoln Center was pretty extraordinary.
12:44So iconic.
12:45And I grew up dreaming about Lincoln Center.
12:49They'd go to ballets and classical music concerts and theater there.
12:54This is like the epitome of everything good.
12:57And then to shoot there, it was very early in shooting, too.
13:01It was like maybe my first day that we shot there, I think.
13:05The rehearsal studios weren't in Lincoln Center, right?
13:07No.
13:07The rehearsal studios we did at SUNY Purchase.
13:10Oh, wow.
13:10Oh, cool.
13:10Yeah.
13:11Which is actually, I think they did, I could be wrong about this, but I think they did all
13:16that jazz there, too.
13:17Oh, really?
13:18Yeah.
13:18It was very...
13:19Stanley Tucci went to SUNY Purchase.
13:20Really?
13:21Yeah.
13:21It's an amazing, amazing school for the ballets.
13:23Yeah.
13:23It's amazing.
13:24I want more, like, tips from all the places.
13:28Yeah.
13:29You have a list.
13:30Well, I have one.
13:30I have a list for all of you.
13:32You can email me.
13:33I'll put my email on the bottom of this.
13:35And I will be forwarding to all of you guys.
13:37I'll be forwarding to all of you guys.
