00:00Some dramatic changes yesterday DRS as maybe we hoped and even expected for the 2025 college
00:06football playoff. What happens next year in 2026 and beyond that remains to be seen but for the
00:1312 team format in our second year of 12 teams we will now go to straight seating. It's what many
00:21people ask for looking at how the format played out in the debut year of a 12 team college football
00:27playoff bracket. Instead of the weird bracket versus rankings it's just straight seating. So unlike last
00:34year when the four highest ranked conference champions earned an opening round by advancing
00:40immediately to the college football playoff quarterfinals now the five highest ranked
00:46conference champs retain that automatic bid to the CFP but once we get the 12 teams in the field
00:52it is just a straight seating based on the rankings from the college football playoff selection
00:59committee. DRS what is your reaction to this change for 2025? I mean we're getting there and like I
01:06always like to say the odds makers are usually the smartest people in the room. Well the college
01:10football competition committee the NCAA competition committee basketball and also football they're the
01:14stupidest people in the room every single year because they don't understand the task at hand
01:18where if you would just put like I'm not even talking about coaches put you know your casual
01:23fan that understands the game and how it's supposed to work and say hey guys if we came up with a
01:27playoff formula how would it work? We would all get it correct but every time the NCAA committee which
01:32is so out of touch with reality gets in there and messes it up and always has to auto correct and come
01:38back like yeah we messed that one up but we can't reopen this playoff for another six years because the TV
01:42contract when everybody knows exactly the way it's supposed to go. So I will give them credit for this.
01:46They understand the error that they made which was so simple to correct in the beginning they were
01:50too stupid to do it or at least we're making that change now. But now as I see it going in and we're
01:55only on you know the 12 we go to 16 and 24 which is great. More teams in the playoffs more meaningful
02:01football it will be great. We'll get to that point in just a second but now we're still at the point
02:06where you say to yourself all right well where do we error last year? We gave every team a buy they all
02:10lost the next the next week here. Well also you gave them a week off and they're playing against good
02:15football teams but also at the same time you put these teams that were technically lower siege quote
02:20unquote than the teams that were actually playing because they were better football teams but you gave
02:23them no advantage whatsoever. Hey guys here's your advantage you get a buy and they go great man it's
02:27gonna be fun to play at home after a buy and crush this next football team. Oh no you're gonna be able
02:32to buy that team's gonna come in red hot and it's gonna be neutral site and they all lost. No shame in
02:37that but at least if you're the the buy is not a reward. Give them a buy with a home game. What's wrong
02:42with that? From a revenue perspective Donny that was one of the parts of this conversation. How would
02:48they make it more incentivized for the ACC the big 12 in the group of five conferences that can't compete
02:55for that college football playoff spot because the big 10 in the SEC were the vocal leaders trying to get
03:02rid of the guaranteed opening round buys with the four highest ranked conference champs because based on
03:07last year's rankings at the end of conference championship weekend the two conference title
03:13games that we had of the big 10 of the SEC would have occupied all four of the top spots that would
03:19have been Oregon champions of the big 10 Georgia champions of the big of the SEC and then Texas and
03:26Penn State the losers of both of those conference championship games in those top four seeds all earning
03:32an opening round buys so it was revealed yesterday the college football playoff executive board still
03:38going to grant the four highest ranked conference champs so they'll still have that distinction
03:42the eight million dollar bonus they get for that financial incentive and of course the deeper you go
03:50into the college football playoff the more financial reward for your athletic department and your
03:54conference as a whole so automatically playing in the college football playoff quarterfinal that a higher
04:01revenue state that is always a part of the reality of the situation but to DRS's point this is helpful
04:09this makes the most common sense which oftentimes college football leaders do not look to first and
04:15foremost could there still be changes to perfect this format for sure really Donnie another conversation is
04:22does it even truly matter because a part of what was discussed yesterday on this phone call not just
04:30straight seating for 2025 but further conversations about 2026 and beyond and what that might look like
04:36with all the rumors and speculation we expand to 14 or 16 teams with four automatic qualifiers for the
04:44big 10 and the SEC all in the name of that holy and mighty TV dollar based on TV partnerships
