00:00You
00:30Oh
01:00Oh
01:30Oh
02:00Oh
02:15There's a hole in my pocket where my dreams fell through from a sidewalk in the city to the
02:23Avenue, there's a link in my damn by the size of a pin
02:28And I can't quite remember how the water's getting in
02:32But when you're wearing on your sleeve all the things you regret
02:36You can only remember what you want to forget
02:40You feel it tugging at your heart like the stars overhead till you rest your bones on the canyon bed
02:51Let them roll over me
02:53Let them roll over me
02:55When I dance you
02:57Let them roll over me
02:59Let them roll over me
03:01When I dance you
03:03With the weight of the world resting on my back
03:05And the road in which I've traveled is as long as it is cracked
03:07But I keep pressing forward with my feet to the ground
03:09For a heart that is broken makes a beautiful sound
03:11And I can't quite remember how the water's getting in
03:13But when you're wearing on your sleeve all the things you regret
03:15You can only remember what you want to forget
03:17You feel it tugging at your heart like the stars overhead till you rest your bones on the canyon bed
03:19Let them roll over me
03:21Let them roll over me
03:23When I dance you
03:25With the weight of the world resting on my back
03:27And the road in which I've traveled is as long as it is cracked
03:29But I keep pressing forward with my feet to the ground
03:31For a heart that is broken makes a beautiful sound
03:33And I can't quite remember how the water's getting in
03:35But when you're wearing on your sleeve all the things you regret
03:37You can only remember what you want to forget
03:39Let them roll over me
03:41Let them roll over me
03:43When I dance you
03:45Let them roll over me
03:47Let them roll over me
03:49When I dance you
03:51With the weight of the world
03:53With the weight of the world
03:55With the weight of the world
03:57With the weight of the world
03:59With the weight of the world
04:01And the road in which I've traveled is as long as it is cracked
04:03But I keep pressing forward
04:05With my feet to the ground
04:07For a heart that is broken
04:09Makes a beautiful sound
04:11And I can't quite remember how the water's getting in
04:13But when you're wearing on your sleeve all the things you regret
04:15You can only remember what you want to forget
04:17You can only remember what you want to forget
04:19Moving on from the things you've done wrong
04:22When they play in your head like an old-fashioned song
04:26When you're wearing on your sleeve all the things you regret
04:30You can only remember what you want to forget
04:36Only my own
04:43Without you
04:51Lonely my ways
04:58Without you
05:02I'll let them roll over me
05:05I'll let them roll over me
05:07When I doubt you
05:10Let them roll over me
05:14Let them roll over me
05:16When I doubt you
05:20Let them roll over me
05:22Let them roll over me
05:24Let them roll over me
05:26Let them roll over me
05:28Let the ground keep my boat
05:31Let the water be my home
05:33Let the dust hold my soul
05:35Like a holy rolling stone
05:39Thank you so much!
06:00Thank you so much!
06:05My name's Brandi Carlile
06:10I'm from Seattle, Washington
06:23I heard the Sox are playing the Mariners tonight
06:39Woo!
07:09I've been down with a broken heart
07:14Since the day I learned to speak
07:17The devil gave me a crooked storm
07:20And it gave me crooked faith
07:22But Gabrielle Dunn came to me
07:25And kissed me in my sleep
07:27And I'll be sicker like an angel
07:31Until I'm six feet deep
07:35I've found myself an old man
07:38And I've tattooed on a sign
07:41I set my mind to wandering
07:43And walking broken lines
07:46Well now you have a mind
07:48To keep me quiet
07:50And although you can try
07:52Better men have hit their knees
07:55And bigger men have died
07:58I'm all right
08:02You've got to raise
08:04The rising
08:09Where the stones
08:13Are no one's hell
08:18You've got to raise
08:22The rising
08:27Go on now ring that bell
08:32I came upon a lightning strike
08:34And I is a bright clear blue
08:37I took that dive from around my neck
08:40And gave my heart to you
08:43Well I sent my love across the sea
08:45And though I didn't cry
08:48That voice will haunt my every dream
08:51Until the day I die
08:54I'm all right
08:58You've got to raise
09:01The rising
09:05Where the stones
09:09Are no one's hell
09:15You've got to raise
09:19The rising
09:23Go on now ring that bell
09:28I came upon a lightning strike
09:31And I is a bright clear blue
09:34I took that dive from around my neck
09:37And gave my heart to you
09:40Well I sent my love across the sea
09:43And though I didn't cry
09:46That voice will haunt my every dream
09:49Until the day I die
09:52I'm all right
09:55you
10:11I dug a hole inside my heart
10:13To put you in your grave
10:15At this point it was you or me
10:19Mama didn't raise no slave
10:23You took my face in both your hands and looked me in the eye
10:29And I went down with such a force, didn't you, brave ally?
10:38I'm gonna rise, I'm gonna rise here
10:54Where there's a storm and no water
11:02You're gonna rise, I'm gonna rise here
11:12Go on now, ring that bell, go on now, ring that bell
11:31Go on now, ring that bell, go on now, ring that bell
12:02Did we pick the right day to be here or what? Holy shit!
12:14This is Tim Hanselroth on the guitar
12:21Phil Hanselroth on the bass
12:25I see he's representing there with your hat
12:29And we've been a band for about 15 years
12:32And we've been coming to Boston for about that long
12:39And one of the things that made us a band is our love for three-part harmony
12:44And I know we're having a good time outside in the sunshine
12:47But do you mind if we play you guys a ballad so we can give you what we do best?
12:52And just sing some three-part harmony for you?
12:55We all grew up on Crosby, Stills and Nash and Fleetwood Mac, right?
13:02So we wrote this song in their honor and we're gonna sing it for you right now
13:07This is a song from our record The Fire Watcher's Daughter and it's called The Eyes
13:11Sing it if you know it!
13:26It really breaks my heart
13:29To see a dear old friend
13:32Go down to the worn out place again
13:39Do you know the sound
13:42Of a closing door?
13:45Have you heard that sound somewhere before?
13:50Do you wonder if she knows you anymore?
13:58I wrapped your love around me like a chain
14:04But I never was afraid that it would die
14:11You can dance in a hurricane
14:14But only if you're standing in the eye
14:25Where did you learn to walk?
14:28Where did you learn to run?
14:31Away from everything you love
14:37And did you think the bottle
14:40Would ever ease your pain?
14:45Did you think that love's a foolish game?
14:51Did you find someone else to take the blame?
14:59I wrapped your love around me like a chain
15:05But I never was afraid that it would die
15:10You can dance in a hurricane
15:16But only if you're standing in the eye
15:23You can dance in a hurricane
15:28But only if you're standing in the eye
15:40I am a sturdy soul
15:44And there ain't no shame
15:48In lying down in the bed you made
15:53Can you fight the urge to run for another day?
16:01You might make it through the night
16:05You might make it further if you learn to stay
16:14I wrapped your love around me like a chain
16:20But I never was afraid that it would die
16:27You can dance in a hurricane
16:30But only if you're standing in the eye
16:37You can dance in a hurricane
16:42But only if you're standing in the eye
17:00Thank you so much, man! What a crowd!
17:09This is the kind of shit that if you could just go back
17:12and tell your 12-year-old self
17:16that one day you might stand up on a stage
17:19and look out at something like this,
17:21it's just you'd never believe it.
17:23It's like, you know, it's like,
17:25it's like, you know, it's like,
17:27it's like, you know, it's like,
17:29it's like, you know, it's like,
17:31so I hope you stand up on a stage
17:34and look out at something like this,
17:37it's just you'd never believe it.
17:41It's never lost on me after all these years
17:44what it looks like.
17:46applause & cheering
17:49I think it's time we found a way back home You lose so many things you love as you grow
18:14I miss the days when I was just a kid And my fear became my shadow, I swear it did
18:26Wherever is your heart, I call home Wherever is your heart, I call home
18:36I know your feet may take you far from me, I know Wherever is your heart, I call home
18:50Made me feel like I was always falling Always falling down without a place to land
19:00Somewhere in the distance heard you calling Oh, it hurts so bad to let go of your hand
19:09Wherever is your heart, I call home Wherever is your heart, I call home
19:19I know your feet may take you far from me, I know Wherever is your heart, I call home
19:32And even when you're high, you can't get low Even with the friends you love, you're still alone
19:42We always find the darkest place to go God forgive our minds that we were born so wrong
19:55Wherever is your heart, I call home Wherever is your heart, I call home
20:05I know your feet may take you far from me, I know Wherever is your heart, I call home
20:35Oh God, forgive my mind Oh God, forgive my mind
20:44When I come home, when I come home Oh God, forgive my mind
20:52There is a road that's long and winding All the time, I'm calling home
21:00Oh God, forgive my mind Oh God, forgive my mind
21:05When I come home, when I come home Oh God, forgive my mind
21:13Oh God, forgive my mind When I come home, when I come home
21:21Wherever is your heart, I call home Wherever is your heart, I call home
21:31I know your feet may take you far from me, I know Wherever is your heart, I call home
21:42Wherever is your heart, I call home Wherever is your heart, I call home
21:52I know your feet may take you far from me, I know Wherever is your heart, I call home
22:42I'm gonna fit in I'm on the list, I'm gonna get in
23:08Haven't you heard? And don't you know who I am? I'm with the Joneses, I'm their best friend
23:16I've come to saturate the market To perpetuate the hip cat
23:25I was born so I can fall in line I'm a legend in my own mind
23:35Can I blend in with the upper line?
23:43I need you to liberate me You the message, educate me
23:48Hold my fist into the air Declare a social victory
23:52You can love me, you can drown me Individuality has never stood a chance against you
23:58Jump into the mainstream, yeah
24:03Your revolution is in the way of my confusion I need someone to tell me who I am
24:15Because of my disillusion I've come to separate the classes
24:23To place the files above the passes And there isn't ever a thing I don't have
24:31To set the bar beneath the masses I can blend in with the upper line
24:46I need you to liberate me You the message, educate me
24:50Hold my fist into the air Declare a social victory
24:54You can love me, you can drown me Individuality has never stood a chance against you
25:00Jump into the mainstream
25:51I need you to liberate me You the message, educate me
25:55Hold my fist into the air Declare a social victory
25:59You can love me, you can drown me Individuality has never stood a chance against you
26:06Jump into the mainstream
26:20Your revolution into the mainstream, yeah
26:48Your revolution into the mainstream, yeah
27:18Man, I hope you guys are having half as much fun as I am.
27:44I don't know if you're familiar with what we've done recently.
27:50But we've just put out an album to support War Child.
27:54It's called Cover Stories.
28:00War Child is an organization out of the UK that's doing an amazing, amazing, amazing thing
28:06which is that they're addressing our refugee crisis.
28:13And they're addressing the crisis of children whose lives have been destroyed by war and
28:16conflict.
28:18They're in Jordan, Syria, Iraq.
28:21They're the first NGO to make inroads into Yemen.
28:25They're in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reintegrating and counseling child soldiers.
28:32And they're basically, step by step, reconstructing our future by addressing the children that
28:37we have exposed to war.
28:46And if you could check out War Child and what they're doing, please know that they're the
28:52most compassionate organization I've ever come across.
28:54And I do believe that the refugee crisis is the defining test of our humanity in this
28:58generation.
28:59And I think we can do an amazing thing here.
29:03So I can't risk the opportunity to just tell you that I feel that way.
29:09And thank you for listening to me.
29:19I've got a little daughter.
29:20Her name is Evangeline Ruth Carlyle.
29:26I've also got a wife, Catherine Carlyle, who I married in the great state of Massachusetts.
29:36And I'm proud to stand up here in front of you and tell you about my family and our right
29:39to exist in the world today.
29:47Catherine and I got married just outside of Plymouth in a place called Wareham.
29:53Anyway, becoming a mother has been the most incredible, the most enlightening, horrible
29:59and inconvenient thing to ever happen to me.
30:02It's really important that you understand both sides of that story.
30:07Give it some thought.
30:08That's all I'm saying.
30:11So I wrote this song, and I'm hoping that you guys wouldn't mind a little solo acoustic
30:14folk singer number here for me to play you a song.
30:20It's about what it's like to be a mother in this day and age.
30:24Both sides of the story.
30:25It's called The Mother.
30:43Welcome to the end of being alone inside your mind.
30:47You're tethered to another and you worry all the time.
30:53You always knew the melody, but you never heard it rhyme.
31:01She's fair and she is quiet, Lord.
31:04She doesn't look like me.
31:07She made me love the morning.
31:09She's a holiday at sea.
31:12The New York streets are as busy as they always used to be.
31:17But I am the mother of Evangeline.
31:26The first things that she took from me were selfishness and sleep.
31:31She broke a thousand heirlooms I was never meant to keep.
31:36She filled my life with color, canceled plans and trashed my car.
31:42But none of that was ever who we are.
31:47Outside of my windows are the mountains and the snow.
31:52I hold you while you're sleeping and I wish that I could go.
31:58All my rowdy friends are out accomplishing their dreams.
32:03But I am the mother of Evangeline.
32:09And they've still got their morning paper and their coffee and their time.
32:15And they still enjoy their evenings with the skeptics and the wine.
32:20Oh, but all the wonders I have seen, I will see a second time.
32:26From inside of the ages through your eyes.
32:31And you are not some accident where no one thought it through.
32:37The world that stood against us made us mean to fight for you.
32:42And when we chose your name, we knew that you'd fight the power too.
32:52You're nothing short of magical and beautiful to me.
32:57I'll never hit the big time without you.
33:03So they can keep their treasure and their ties to the machine.
33:07Because I am the mother of Evangeline.
33:13And they can keep their treasure and their ties to the machine.
33:22I am the mother of Evangeline.
33:37Oh.
33:54Thank you very much.
34:07All of these lines across my face Tell you the story of who I am
34:24So many stories where I've been And I got to where I am
34:35But these stories don't mean anything When you've got no one to tell them to
34:46It's true, I was made for you I climbed across the mountaintops
35:02Swam all across the ocean blue I crossed all the lines and I'm a rose
35:12But baby, I broke them all for you Oh, because even when I was flat broke
35:23You made me feel like a million bucks You knew all I was made for you
35:53Oh, because even when I was flat broke You made me feel like a million bucks
36:08You see the smile that's on my mouth It's hiding the words that don't come out
36:34And all of my friends who think I am blessed They don't know my heart is a mess
36:45No, they don't know who I really am And they don't know what I've been through
36:55Like you do And I was made for you
37:05And all of these lines across my face Tell you the story of who I am
37:15So many stories where I've been And now I've got to where I am
37:26But these stories don't mean anything When you've got no one to tell them to
37:37It's true, I was made for you Oh, it's true
37:57That I was made for you
38:08Thank you so much! We just got one more for you!
38:38The time of day I can't recall The kind of thing that takes a toll
39:01Over years of overtime Over smiles and over wine
39:07All in all, I wasn't bad All in all, I wasn't good
39:12But I still care
39:17That's the problem with the days They're never long enough to say
39:23What it is you never said All the books you never read
39:29Throw myself into the wind Hoping somebody might pick me up
39:36And carry me again
39:43And where are you now?
39:49Do you let me down?
39:55Do you make me green for you?
40:06Do I make you proud?
40:13Do you get me now?
40:19Am I your pride and joy?
40:38I believe this to be true There's nothing sacred, nothing new
40:44And no one tells you when it's time There are no warnings, only signs
40:49And then you know that you are alone You're not a child anymore
40:55But you're still scared
41:00All your mountains turn to rocks All your oceans turn to drops
41:06They are nothing like you thought You can't be something you are not
41:11Life is not a looking glass Don't get tangled in your past
41:16Like I am learning how to
41:24And where are you now?
41:29Do you let me down?
41:35Do you make me green for you?
41:46Do I make you proud?
41:51Do you get me now?
41:57Am I your pride and joy?
42:27Oh, oh, oh
42:57Oh, oh, oh
43:27Oh, oh, oh
43:37Oh, oh, oh
43:47Oh, oh, oh
43:57Oh, oh, oh
44:07Oh, oh, oh
44:37Oh, oh, oh
44:47Oh, oh, oh
44:57Oh, oh, oh
45:07Oh, oh, oh
45:17Oh, oh, oh
45:27Oh, oh, oh
45:37Oh, oh, oh
