00:00A hundred years ago, my grandfather, Sir Barkley Moynihan, gathered here at the old medical school in Leeds with 17 other people.
00:07They committed to improve cancer research in the region, and they forged a new organization,
00:14the Yorkshire Council of the British Empire Cancer Campaign.
00:22Now, this would later become Yorkshire Cancer Research,
00:26and today we're recreating that momentous meeting with 18 people who have united to bring life-saving cancer research to the people in Yorkshire.
00:36Being in the very room the charity was founded and being able to recreate this moment in history with researchers and supporters is just remarkable.
00:46So being here at the old medical school to mark a hundred years of Yorkshire cancer research
00:50is an opportunity to remember the groundbreaking cancer research that's taken place in our region.
00:56Yorkshire Cancer Research is the reason why I'm sitting in Yorkshire, they've funded our research over the last 40 years.
01:02Surgeons around the world now operate differently because of the funding that Yorkshire Cancer Research put in.
01:07My hope for the future is that we find ways that people can help to prevent their cancers and better cures for cancers,
01:14and it will only be done through the public support of organizations like Yorkshire Cancer Research.
01:20It's an honour to be here to mark 100 years of Yorkshire Cancer Research.
01:26Yorkshire Cancer Research has done a lot, is still doing a lot, and I feel very proud that I've been a very small part of it.
01:34Our research really is the backbone of the treatment and prevention and cure of cancer.
01:41Engaging in this kind of research with experts I think is vital.
01:47Yorkshire Cancer Research is looking to the future, focused on bringing the brightest minds to our region,
01:53so new discoveries can be made, more lives can be saved, and more people can enjoy many more years with their loved ones.
02:00There is still a lot of work to be done, but together we can continue to make great progress towards one goal,
02:07a Yorkshire free from cancer.
