00:00Is Pope Leo XIV a registered U.S. Republican?
00:08Claims are circulating that former Cardinal Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, is a registered member of the U.S. Republican Party.
00:18They were triggered by Charlie Kirk, a pro-Trump influencer, who shared a screenshot on X claiming to show Pope Leo's online voter record.
00:28The name, age and date of birth match the Pope's. He is also registered to vote in Will County, Illinois.
00:35The screenshot shows his party as being Republican.
00:38But the state of Illinois does not register voters by party affiliation, so this cannot be an official voter record.
00:46There are other states in the U.S. that do ask for party affiliation when voters register to vote, but Illinois is not one of those.
00:53Will County voting records do show Prevost had voted in three Republican primary elections since 2012, according to records obtained by NBC and ABC News.
01:06But voting in a party's primary doesn't mean you are affiliated with that party, and it also doesn't prevent you from voting in another party's primary in a subsequent ballot.
01:17Robert Prevost's political views have come under scrutiny since he was elected Pope earlier this month.
01:21In February, he shared an article titled, J.D. Vance is wrong, Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others, written in response to the U.S. vice president's comments on migration.
01:34He has also shared commentary criticizing Trump's role in the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to El Salvador, which judges in the U.S. Supreme Court have said was an error.
