A 21-year-old woman was sentenced to nine months in jail by the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court for causing the death of her five-month-old foetus.

Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman imposed the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty when the charge was read to her on Friday (May 23).

00:19According to the charge sheet, the incident took place on the night of May 12th in a room
00:24of a house located in Bandar Hilir. The woman had initially sought treatment at Hospital Malacca
00:29claiming she had suffered a miscarriage due to breast engorgement. However, further investigation
00:35revealed that she had in fact consumed abortion pills purchased through social media. She later
00:41admitted to handing over the fetus to a friend for burial. The prosecutor called for a custodial
00:46sentence highlighting the growing prevalence of social issues and the seriousness of the offense.
00:52The defense lawyer appealed for a lenient sentence explaining that his client earns just
00:571,800 ringgit a month and is the sole provider for her three school-going siblings and 76-year-old
01:04father. He also told the court that she had been under repeated pressure from her boyfriend
01:09to terminate the pregnancy. The court ordered that her jail sentence commence from the date
01:15of her arrest on May 19th.
