00:00Welcome to the Deep Dive. Today we're exploring Cyprus. It's this incredible island just packed
00:12with ancient history but living very much in the present too. Exactly. Our source here is
00:16facts and wonders of Cyprus and yeah our mission is basically to dig through and find the really
00:20standout stuff for you. Okay let's dive in then. Cyprus. Wow the history just seems immense. Oh
00:27absolutely. Take a common dairy of wine. The amazing thing isn't just that it's old it's like
00:325,000 years old. A label that old still being produced. 5,000 years it's hard to even wrap
00:39your head around. It really is. Think about that connection you know a taste that literally spans
00:44millennia. It says a lot about sticking to tradition I think. Definitely and then you've got Nicotia.
00:48It's kind of wild. One of the oldest continuously lived in cities and it's also Europe's only
00:52divided capital. Greek Cypriot South, Turkish Cypriot North. How does that even work day to day?
00:58Well it creates this really unique uh sometimes challenging dynamic for sure. Ancient roots
01:04meeting a very modern division. Right. Speaking of roots Cyprus is Aphrodite's legendary birthplace
01:10right. Petra to Romeo. That's the spot and it's not just a pretty rock formation it's deeply symbolic
01:16culturally significant. Huge weight there. And I saw something about the world's oldest perfumery
01:22in Pyrgos. Yeah dating back to like 2000 BC finding something like that it just paints this picture of
01:30a really quite sophisticated society way back then. Perfume that long ago tells you a lot about their
01:37uh their lifestyle their craft. It really does. Okay so shifting gears a bit let's talk about the
01:42environment the geography. Ah yes the source mentioned something quite striking no year-round
01:47rivers. Right which immediately makes you think well water management must have been and still
01:51must be incredibly important. Very ingenious. Yeah that scarcity must have shaped so much of their
01:56history and development. Constant challenge. Absolutely a real story of adaptation. And on another
02:01environmental note something more positive for turtles. Oh yeah the endangered green and loggerhead
02:06turtles. Cyprus is a key nesting ground. On protected beaches. It's uh quite a contrast isn't it this in
02:14ancient land playing this vital role in you know modern conservation. It really is. Okay so what about
02:21more recent layers the cultural mix? Well you definitely see the legacy of British rule which
02:26only ended in 1960. Right like English being so widely spoken and driving on the left little things you
02:33notice. Exactly. Those remnants are still sort of woven into daily life and then there are the big
02:39cultural landmarks. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Three of them. Yep you've got the amazing painted
02:44churches up in the Trudos Mountains and the whole ancient city of Pythos. Just incredible sites. What
02:51makes them UNESCO level special? Just the history or? It's the combination really. Outstanding historical
02:56value artistic achievement. They offer these windows into different areas of Cyprus. Makes sense.
03:01And beyond the sites the source talks a lot about Felixinia. Ah yes. Felixinia that love for
03:06strangers. It's presented as this really core Cypriot value. Hospitality. That must make a huge
03:11difference to anyone visiting right? That feeling of being genuinely welcome. You'd have to think so.
03:16It's just a really warm uh ingrained approach to visitors. So okay pulling it all together. We've got
03:22this island with incredibly deep history. Unique geography like the water situation. A blend of cultures from
03:30ancient times through British rule and this really strong welcoming spirit. Quite a package.
03:35It really is. And you know maybe something to leave you thinking about Nicosia. Consider that
03:40city millennia of history under its belt. But today divided. How does that profound past rubbing up
03:46against that present-day division actually shape how people who live there see the world you know their
03:50daily lives? It's complex.
03:52Yeah.
