00:00Hi, I'm Stefan Grober.
00:02You know, sometimes history creates those moments
00:05that appear too surreal to be true.
00:08In the United States, next June 14th
00:11is set to be one of those.
00:13It's the day the U.S. Army
00:15celebrates its 250th birthday.
00:18A historic event worth remembering
00:20one year before the 13 colonies
00:23declared their independence.
00:25June 14th is also President Donald Trump's
00:2879th birthday.
00:30You see where this is going.
00:32Two birthdays and one opportunity
00:35for Trump's long-held desire to stage a military parade
00:38in the streets of Washington.
00:40Trump caught the parade bug during his first term
00:43when French President Emmanuel Macron
00:45invited him to the traditional Bastille Day parade
00:48in Paris in 2017.
00:51Now Trump wants a big one himself.
00:54For himself.
00:56According to official planning documents,
00:58the twin celebration includes almost 7,000 soldiers,
01:02more than 120 military vehicles,
01:0525 Abrams tanks and 50 helicopters.
01:08Now experts are worried that these tanks
01:11will tear up the streets and damage bridges.
01:13Washington's infrastructure is not designed
01:16to support heavy military stuff, they say.
01:19And the mayor of the District of Columbia
01:21didn't outright reject the parade,
01:23but she said,
01:25if military tanks were used,
01:27they should be accompanied with many millions of dollars
01:30to repair the roads.
01:32By the way, money?
01:33No problem.
01:34Cost estimates run into tens of millions of dollars.
01:37Nobody has an exact idea yet.
01:40This at a time when Trump and his
01:42Department of Government Efficiency,
01:44also known as DOGE and run by Elon Musk,
01:47have slashed federal agencies,
01:49personnel and programs to crack down on waste.
01:53Meanwhile, opposition to Trump's military parade is growing.
01:56Thus far, in more than a hundred locations across the United States,
02:00a coalition of groups is organizing a nationwide day of protests.
02:04They call the parade a spectacle more suited for kings and dictators,
02:10not U.S. presidents.
02:12So it's going to be no king's day.
02:15One late night comedian joked parade organizers should consider
02:19including America's most dangerous weapon,
02:22a self-driving Tesla.
02:25Thanks for watching.
02:26See you soon.
