UK hands sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius after last-minute legal delay

Under the agreement, the UK will pay Mauritius €120 million each year to lease back their military base for at least 99 years.

00:00A small crowd of people gathered outside a court in support of Britain signing over its sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius on Thursday.
00:11However, for a cost of 120 million euros a year, it will lease a US-UK military base vital for British security, according to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
00:23A last-minute court injunction delayed the signing after two Chagosian women objected, fearing they would lose any chance of returning to their homeland.
00:35But the injunction was later lifted and the agreement was signed by Starmer and Mauritius leader Navin Ramgulam.
00:43In the 1960s and 70s, Britain evicted around 2,000 people to make way for their military base, which many are still fighting for the right to return.
00:52The International Court of Justice ruled in 2019 that Britain had unlawfully separated the islands from Mauritius.
