00:00Good afternoon. A few moments ago, I signed a deal to secure the joint UK-US base on Diego
00:17Garcia. This is absolutely vital for our defence and intelligence, and therefore for the safety
00:26and security of the British people. The strategic location of this base is of the utmost significance
00:39to Britain. From deploying aircraft to defeat terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan, to anticipating
00:46threats in the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific, the base is right at the foundation of our
00:54security and safety at home. It has helped us to disrupt threats to the UK, to support counter-terror
01:02operations against Islamic State, and to reduce the risk to brave British and American servicemen
01:09and servicewomen.
01:17The base is one of the most significant contributions that we make to our security relationship with
01:23the United States, which is critical for keeping Britain safe. Almost everything we do from the
01:31United States is in partnership with the US. President Trump has welcomed the deal, along
01:39with other allies, because they see the strategic importance of this base, and that we cannot
01:46cede the ground to others who would seek to do us harm.
01:51We inherited a negotiation in which the principle of giving up.
01:59We had to act now, because the base was under threat. The courts have already made decisions
02:07which undermine our position. And if Mauritius took us to court again, which they certainly
02:14would have, the UK's long-standing legal view is that we would not have a realistic prospect
02:21of success, and would likely face provisional measures orders within a matter of weeks.
02:29So we have acted to secure our national interest. By agreeing to this deal now, on our terms, we're
02:38securing strong protections, including from malign influence, that will allow the base to operate
02:45well into the next century, helping to keep us safe for generations to come, in the national
02:52interest.
02:57Within weeks, we faced new legal rulings, which would weaken the UK's full operational sovereignty
03:05over this base. And within just a few years, this irreplaceable military and intelligence
03:13base would become inoperable. That's why we've taken action today. That's why the Prime Minister
03:20has signed this treaty today, securing this base for the next 99 years and beyond.
03:27And equipment to monitor the nuclear test ban treaty.
03:35No action was no option. And anyone who would argue to abandon this deal would abandon this
03:42base. So let me be clear. The British people and our British forces are safer today and into
03:52the future because of this deal. Within weeks, we faced new legal rulings, which obviously the
04:02FATMA was a challenge delayed the signing, but in a way was a good thing because a court has now
04:10heard the arguments for and against and come down conclusively in the High Court in favour of the
04:16government's argument that was put forward this morning. So that challenge was made. That challenge
04:23has now been determined in our courts after legal arguments. And that's the right way to determine it.
04:30Who would seek to do us harm?
04:34And let me be...
04:36who would seek to do us harm?
04:55Have a good one.
