00:00Within the far reaches of deep space, there remain unknown planets, journeys into galaxies
00:12yet uncharted.
00:15Stellar exploration is the new found adventure.
00:19On the asteroid Vesta, halfway between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, is the small spaceport
00:27of Kronos, supply center to space miners.
00:32Here, in this isolated watering hole, exist prospectors, gamblers, pirates and cutthroats
00:41of every persuasion.
00:44Our story is about these daring and ruthless men who risk their lives in search of precious
00:52stones and metals in the icy tomb of deep space, and journey upon the threshold of alien
01:01worlds.
01:19Kronos, the rising star saloon, Saturday night.
01:25Raise 300.
01:26Oh, I'm out.
01:27Oh, me too.
01:28Well, that leaves just you and me, dude.
01:31Like I said before, my name is Silberthorn.
01:35Travis Silberthorn.
01:38Sorry, dude, I'm not much good with names.
01:41You might want to remember mine.
01:44I see your 300 and raise you 3,000.
01:49What?
01:50You heard me.
01:51I only have 2,000.
01:53Too bad, dude.
01:56Wait a minute, wait a minute.
01:57I have a ship.
01:58I have a 98 Dart.
01:59What do you say?
02:00For 1,000?
02:02Where is it?
02:03Out on the lot, number four.
02:06That clunker?
02:07Hey, look, it needs a little paint.
02:08That's all.
02:09It's got an FTL overdrive.
02:11Faster than light?
02:12That's right.
02:13That alone is worth 1,000.
02:16All right.
02:17You calling?
02:18You know it.
02:20Three queens.
02:22Damn.
02:24Well, gentlemen, thanks.
02:26Not bad for the first part of the night.
02:29Um, whose deal is it?
02:32What the hell was that?
02:33That old scrounge over there.
02:34He just came running into this place and shot off his blaster.
02:37Shh.
02:38He's trying to say something.
02:39Glowstone.
02:42Well, there goes the game.
02:45Glowstone.
02:46Glowstone's been discovered on Kalamar.
02:49Glowstone?
02:50Glowstone!
02:53Meanwhile, high above Earth, Starlab, the spinning observatory wheel, drifts silently,
03:02peacefully through space.
03:04Aboard Starlab, research director Maura Cassidy and her assistant Tim ready the giant telescopes
03:11for a close-hand look at the new frontier.
03:19Dr. Cassidy, you're early.
03:21I know, Tim, but I'm anxious to get a look at the planet.
03:24Besides, Commissioner White has ordered a 24-hour surveillance of Kalamar.
03:28Mycroft is moving the 900-inch scope into position now.
03:31The 900?
03:32What's wrong with the big one?
03:33It's working on spectral analysis.
03:36Two more hours.
03:37We can't wait.
03:39Delta One will be here any minute, and I want Kalamar on the viewer when Graydon and Griff arrive.
03:43Why are they coming here to Starlab first?
03:45Kalamar's in the opposite direction.
03:47I don't know, Tim.
03:48They didn't tell me.
03:49I can't believe it was just yesterday that news of the Glowstone strike got out.
03:53It seems like everybody's going to Kalamar.
03:56Well, I wouldn't mind going there myself.
03:58What for, Dr. Cassidy?
04:00Well, for one thing, I've never even seen a grain of Glowstone, much less the rocks
04:04rumored to exist on Kalamar.
04:05Will you settle for a good look right now?
04:07The scope's ready.
04:08Well, then turn on the viewer, Tim.
04:09Let's see this new frontier.
04:11Right, Dr. Cassidy.
04:12Viewer on.
04:20Is that what all the fuss is about?
04:22Captain Griff.
04:23Well, that's it, all right.
04:24That's Kalamar.
04:25That hardly looks worth the effort.
04:27Well, what about you, John?
04:28What do you think?
04:29Huh.
04:30It looks hot.
04:31Just 200 degrees at noon is all.
04:33Oh, and I forgot to pack my cocoa butter.
04:36Can you tell us anything else, Maura?
04:38Not much.
04:39A double sun accounts for the hot days.
04:41Nights, on the other hand, are cool and very dark.
04:43There is no moon.
04:45Most plant and animal life will probably be nocturnal.
04:48It's really a fascinating world.
04:50If only we knew more about it.
04:52Well, we'll give you a complete report when we get back.
04:54How long are you going to be gone?
04:56Oh, a week or so.
04:57Until the ISA can set up a permanent command post there.
05:00I don't understand why you two went out of your way to come here
05:04before going on to Kalamar.
05:06Um, well, an ISA directive, Maura.
05:11Commissioner White's orders.
05:12But why?
05:14Tell her, buddy.
05:15Oh, thanks, pal.
05:18Well, you see, Maura, the chief told us to leave Delta One here at Starlab.
05:23Then how will you get back to Kalamar?
05:25Uh, in Starlab's cruiser.
05:28Columbus!
05:30The heck you will!
05:31You're not touching my ship!
05:33Now, come on, Maura.
05:34Be reasonable.
05:35We need the shuttle from Columbus.
05:36I don't care.
05:37Forget it.
05:38Excuse me, Dr. Cassidy.
05:40Yes, Tim.
05:41What is it?
05:42You said you wanted to go to Kalamar.
05:44Here's the perfect opportunity.
05:46Yes.
05:48Hmm.
05:49So it is.
05:51Thanks, Tim.
05:53Okay, John.
05:54You can take my ship on one condition.
05:56Uh-oh, Skipper.
05:57Take me with you.
05:58Oh, now, just a minute, Maura.
06:00I have some field time coming anyway.
06:02The equipment is already aboard Columbus, so it's settled.
06:04I'll go get ready.
06:11Hey, Skipper.
06:13We sure handled that well.
06:15Yeah, well, maybe it's a good thing she's coming along, buddy.
06:18We can use the help.
06:21As Graydon and Griff prepare to disembark Starlab for Kalamar,
06:25early prospector arrivals begin on the small planet.
06:31Mark Robbins and Lee Johnson are among the first.
06:40Good thing we left the landing lights on.
06:42It's really dark out here.
06:44Yeah, but we have to work at night.
06:46It's too hot during daylight, you know that.
06:48Besides, we've already lost time, so we'd better get busy.
06:51You sure these hills are the best place to look for glowstones?
06:54They're a good place to start, Lee.
06:56You unpack the scanner, and I'll set up the auxiliary lights.
06:59Shh, shh.
07:01What's wrong?
07:02I thought I heard something.
07:04I don't hear anything.
07:05There, listen.
07:07Yeah, I do hear it now.
07:09Sounds like a herd of animals or something.
07:11Don't worry about it.
07:12There's something eerie about that sound.
07:14I said don't worry about it.
07:16Come on, let's get to work.
07:20From the blackness of Kalamar's night comes an omen.
07:26What lies ahead on this tiny, distant planet remains an unknown,
07:32shrouded in mystery on Alien Worlds.
07:56Alien Worlds continues.
08:00A wave of unruly space prospectors, a chaotic infiltration of the planet Kalamar.
08:07Anticipating the outbreak of lawlessness, the International Space Authority intervenes.
08:14Acting on ISA orders, a space exploration team is sent to Kalamar
08:19to begin preparations for the arrival of an ISA security fleet
08:24and the establishment of a permanent command post.
08:28Starlab's interstellar cruiser Columbus is en route.
08:31SET commanders John Graydon and Buddy Griff,
08:34along with Starlab research director Maura Cassidy, are on board.
08:41Skipper, we're getting a distress signal heading 049er.
08:45Open channel 8, Buddy.
08:50ISA cruiser Columbus calling vessel at 049er.
08:55We read your flag. Open communications on channel 8. Over.
08:59What's going on?
09:00Some idiot probably ran out of photons.
09:03Oh, thank God you guys showed up.
09:05I'll bet 50 ships passed me by without even slowing down.
09:09I'm sorry, pal, but we'll be doing the same.
09:11What? Oh, come on, you can't leave me.
09:14Hey, Skipper, I think I know that guy. Do you mind?
09:18Okay, Buddy, go ahead, but I'm not stopping.
09:20Hello, Travis. Travis Silverthorne, is that you?
09:24Yeah, who are you?
09:25It's me, Buddy.
09:26Buddy, you fool. Stop that ship right now and pick me up.
09:30Hey, Skipper, what do you say?
09:32I already said, Buddy.
09:33But Travis is like a brother.
09:35I don't care, Buddy. We don't have the time.
09:38Skipper, he saved my life when we were kids.
09:42Oh, damn it, Buddy.
09:45Thanks, Skipper.
09:47Hello, Travis. Hold on, we're coming alongside.
09:51As Captain Griff aids a distressed friend,
09:54Dr. Cassidy receives an emergency call from Starlab.
10:00That's right, Dr. Cassidy.
10:02Spectral analysis indicates a little flare-up on Kalimar's double sun.
10:06How intense, Tim?
10:07Strong enough to knock out any annual radio communication within 19 parsecs of Kalimar.
10:13Okay, thanks for the report, Tim. I'll be in touch.
10:16Great, huh?
10:17You heard.
10:18Yeah. Without any radio communication on Kalimar, things could get sticky.
10:24Any idea how long the solar flare-ups might last?
10:27I'd just be guessing.
10:32John.
10:33Warner.
10:34I'd like you to meet my old friend, Travis Silverthorne.
10:36Travis.
10:37Appreciate the ride, Captain.
10:39It's all right, Travis.
10:40What happened to your ship, Travis?
10:42Oh, it was a piece of junk I won on the card game on Kronos. Not worth going back for.
10:46Say, you wouldn't be headed for Kalimar by any chance, would you?
10:51We sure are.
10:52Fantastic.
10:58Back on Kalimar's night side,
11:01prospectors Mark Robbins and Lee Johnson continue their search for Glowstone.
11:09Out of the black depths, a mysterious sound draws closer.
11:17I think they're getting closer, Mark.
11:19Will you stop worrying about that noise? It's probably a natural phenomenon.
11:24Well, natural or not, I got a bad feeling about it.
11:27Hey, what do you say we break camp and set up at another location?
11:30Oh, Lee, come on. You got prospector jitters.
11:33Listen, the sound. It stopped.
11:36You see there? Nothing to worry about.
11:38Like I said, it's a natural phenomenon.
11:42Natural phenomenon. Yeah, sure.
11:53Well, that's it.
11:54We've entered the area affected by Kalimar's sun.
11:57We no longer have any radio communication with anyone.
12:00We'll need to keep a monitor on the radio at all times.
12:03Skip, me and Travis are throwing a party to celebrate our reunion.
12:06You want to join us?
12:07Oh, no, thanks, buddy.
12:09But go ahead. Just don't overdo it.
12:11Right, Skip.
12:12How about you, Maura? Would you like to have a drink with us?
12:15Well...
12:16Oh, go ahead, Maura. We have time before we get to Kalimar.
12:19OK, why not?
12:20All right. We'll be in the galley, Skipper.
12:26Well, tell me, Mr. Silverthorne...
12:27Please, Maura, call me Travis.
12:30OK, Travis.
12:31What draws you to Kalimar?
12:33Plan on doing any prospect?
12:35Well, in a manner of speaking, I guess you could.
12:38If I know Travis, he'll be mining the miners.
12:41And that means?
12:42I will be playing cards.
12:44Ah.
12:47OK, here we are.
12:49Martian fizz is OK?
12:50Sure, fine.
12:51OK by me.
12:52You know, I've never seen Glowstone.
12:55No kidding?
12:57I just happen to have a piece with me.
13:01Really?
13:02Oh, I'd love to see it.
13:03It's just a speck, but it's enough to see the value.
13:06To get the full effect of Glowstone, you have to see it in the dark.
13:10Oh, buddy, will you please turn off the lights?
13:12Sure.
13:15Oh, it's beautiful.
13:17I've never seen such rich colors before.
13:20So bright, pure, and warm.
13:24Think she likes it, buddy?
13:25I don't know.
13:26It's hard to tell.
13:27The Glowstone is supposedly an aphrodisiac, too, you know.
13:31No, I didn't.
13:32But I'm not surprised.
13:33Oh, wow.
13:34You two want to be left alone?
13:35Buddy.
13:36Of course, that's not the reason it's so valuable.
13:39That's right.
13:40That much I do know.
13:41Glowstone is a perfect energy source.
13:43Small, clean, safe.
13:45Doesn't get hot, and yet the energy it releases can be put to thousands of uses.
13:49And on top of all of that, it's one of the rarest minerals in the universe.
13:53This little speck of mine is worth close to a hundred thousand.
13:57I've met men who are willing to kill for a piece half this size.
14:01And almost as many who are willing to die for it.
14:08The value of Glowstone cannot be denied.
14:12But neither can the dangers of mining it.
14:16As two young prospectors draw closer to a confrontation with the unknown on Calamar.
14:27It's been a half hour, Lee, and no more howls.
14:31If anything was there, it's gone now.
14:33No, I don't think so, Mark.
14:34They're out there, all around us.
14:36I can feel them.
14:38Maybe we should just get back to work, huh?
14:40Are you kidding?
14:41That's just what they're waiting for.
14:43Well, we can't sit here all night.
14:45Besides, I've scanned the whole place. There is nothing here to fear.
14:48But Mark...
14:49But nothing.
14:50Give me that blaster and wait here.
14:52Where are you going?
14:53I'm going to prove my point.
14:55I'll fire the blaster a couple of times over by that rock.
14:57If nothing happens, then maybe we can get back to work, okay?
15:01And if something does happen?
15:02Well, then you're going to have a front row seat.
15:04But nothing will happen. Now watch.
15:09Hey, what happened to the lights?
15:11Mark?
15:12Mark!
15:13What in the name of God is that?
15:17Mark, where are you?
15:18Lee?
15:20Lee!
15:21Help me!
15:29From the deep darkness of a mining camp on Kalamar,
15:33a scream of terror and silence of death.
15:39What strange creatures stalk the blackness
15:42and lure these helpless miners into horror?
15:47An excursion into the arcade on Alien Worlds.
15:55Alien Worlds continues.
16:00Mysterious hostile creatures attack a prospector camp on Kalamar.
16:06A search for Glowstone ends in terror.
16:11Lawless disorder sweeps the planet as prospectors
16:16A search for Glowstone ends in terror.
16:20Lawless disorder sweeps the planet as prospectors and pirates
16:25arrive in search of the precious stone.
16:28A space exploration team enters Kalamar's orbit,
16:32sent by the International Space Authority to subdue the madness.
16:39I can't get over how hot it looks down there, moron.
16:42At least the nights are pleasant, John.
16:44I'm sure most of the miners do their work at night.
16:46What about solar screens during the day?
16:49Even under a solar screen, it would still be 120 degrees or so.
16:52A little hot to be doing hard labor.
16:54Yeah, I'll say.
16:57You know, I never liked the desert, even on Earth.
17:00I think I'll stay up here and let the rest of you take the first EVA.
17:04So now all I have to do is find Buddy and Travis.
17:07I think they went up to the launch deck.
17:08Just a minute, I'll go with you.
17:10Okay.
17:12You know, Travis,
17:14seeing you again reminds me of the first time we left Earth together, remember?
17:18How could I forget?
17:20I can't believe we ever got past the moon and that old government surplus.
17:24A wombat, wasn't it?
17:26It was a wombat, all right.
17:28That old fossil fueler.
17:30I'll bet they're still talking about our last night on Mars.
17:33Well, I know I am.
17:38Excuse us, you two.
17:40If you're looking for a shuttle crew, we're ready.
17:42Good, because we're going down.
17:44Oh, right.
17:46But wait, Skipper.
17:47Someone has to stay.
17:48Yeah, I'll stay, Buddy.
17:49The three of you can go.
17:51Right.
17:52Well, come on.
17:53Buddy?
17:54Yeah?
17:55Listen, whatever you do, don't land.
17:58Why not?
17:59With the radios out, I just don't want to take any chances.
18:02So I'll just look around and then report back here after your EVA.
18:06Okay, Skipper.
18:08You sure know how to take the fun out of an EVA.
18:14As the EVA crew prepares to descend from the cruiser Columbus,
18:18other preparations are underway on Earth.
18:22An ISA security fleet, commanded by Captain Richard Baker,
18:27prepares to depart for Kalamar and set up a permanent command post.
18:36Captain Baker?
18:37Yes, Lieutenant, what is it?
18:39I have that recording of the last transmission from Kalamar, sir.
18:42Just before the signal faded completely.
18:44Good, Lieutenant.
18:45Let's hear it.
18:47Mayday, mayday.
18:48Coordinates one-nine or zero-six.
18:51We're under attack.
18:52We're coming out of nowhere.
18:54Weapons out of reach.
18:56It's the light.
18:57It's the light.
18:58It's the light.
18:59That's where it ends, sir.
19:01Was he saying light?
19:03Apparently.
19:04But we can't figure out why.
19:06The coordinates are from Kalamar's dark side.
19:16An EVA shuttle streaks across Kalamar's ebony skies
19:21into the planet's night side.
19:24Aboard, Captain Buddy Griff,
19:27Travis Silverthorne and Maura Cassidy
19:30observing the planet's surface through an infrared scanner.
19:34Altitude leveling off at 10,000.
19:36Speed 900 and dropping.
19:38I can't understand it, Buddy.
19:41There's no lights down there.
19:43There's no sign of mining camps or laser drills.
19:47There's nothing but darkness.
19:49I have to admit it, Travis.
19:51It does seem strange.
19:52Will you two relax?
19:53We're flying over a huge plains area.
19:55Any mining operations are bound to be in the hills, right?
19:58Oh, yeah, that's right.
19:59Well, can you see anything at all down there, Maura?
20:02Scattered plant life and what appears to be a giant herd of animals.
20:06I'm taking us down closer.
20:08This is strange.
20:09What's strange?
20:11I can see several mining camps.
20:13So?
20:14Well, they appear to have been totally destroyed,
20:16like they were hit by a tornado.
20:17I knew something was wrong.
20:19Is there any sign of survivors?
20:20No.
20:21Wait!
20:22Wait, slow down.
20:23Okay, okay, give me a chance.
20:24What do you see, Maura?
20:25What do you see?
20:26A group of men.
20:27Some of them look injured.
20:28They're standing together near some caves.
20:30They're trying to get our attention.
20:31So why don't they turn on a light if they want us to see them?
20:33Only one way to answer that question, buddy.
20:36I think you're right, pal.
20:37We've got to land this bird.
20:39But, buddy, John just said that we could...
20:40You said some of those men were hurt, Maura.
20:42We've got to help them.
20:43That's why we're here.
20:44I suppose you're right.
20:45I know I am.
20:47Hit the landing lights, will you, Travis?
20:49Right.
20:50There.
20:51Now that's more like it.
20:52Now we can see, too.
20:53Yeah.
20:54There are the men that Maura was...
20:56Hey, wait a minute.
20:57Wait a minute.
20:59They're running away.
21:00They're running away like scared rabbits.
21:02Yeah.
21:03They're heading straight for the caves.
21:05They panicked as soon as you turned on the lights.
21:07Touchdown.
21:09Let's get out there and find out what's going on.
21:18Turn off your lights.
21:19The teachers are coming.
21:21Who are you?
21:22What are you talking about?
21:23You're in great danger.
21:25The night riders.
21:26They've seen your lights.
21:28They're attracted by light.
21:30There are hundreds of them.
21:31They will be here any minute.
21:33Okay, okay.
21:34Quick, turn off the lights, Travis.
21:35Right.
21:36The only way to save your ship is to leave now.
21:40Buddy, listen.
21:42It's them.
21:43They're coming, I tell you.
21:45I'll take a look through the infrared binoculars.
21:47Don't worry.
21:48They can't be stopped.
21:49They'll tear your ship to pieces and us, too, if we don't get out of here.
21:55What is that?
21:56It's the night riders.
21:58Night riders?
22:00Maura, can you see anything through the binoculars?
22:02Can I ever?
22:04They're coming this way, all right?
22:05There must be several hundred of them.
22:07Several hundred what?
22:08Strange creatures.
22:09Reptilian, I mean.
22:10But huge.
22:12They're riding on the backs of those animals I saw earlier.
22:14My God, I don't believe it.
22:16What is it?
22:17What is it?
22:18They don't have any eyes.
22:19But how can they?
22:20Please.
22:21There isn't much time.
22:22You must leave.
22:23He's right.
22:24They've already reached the foothills.
22:26Okay, let's go.
22:27Everyone in the shuttle.
22:28You, too, mister.
22:38All systems on, buddy.
22:40All right.
22:41Preliminary ignition.
22:42Set.
22:44Uh-oh.
22:45What's the matter, buddy?
22:46Oh, misfire.
22:47Again.
22:49Let me out of here.
22:50I want out.
22:51Relax, will you?
22:53All right, baby.
22:54Come on.
22:56Damn it.
22:57I'm getting out of here.
22:58Now!
23:01All right.
23:02That's it.
23:03Abandon ship.
23:04Head for the cave.
23:05Right, buddy.
23:06Okay.
23:07Be careful, Morta.
23:08Watch your step.
23:09Come on, buddy.
23:10Hurry.
23:11Okay, okay.
23:13My God.
23:15What the...
23:16What are they?
23:18I don't think they're Indians, Morta.
23:20I...
23:21I don't believe it.
23:22Look.
23:23Look, they're tearing the shuttle apart.
23:26What are we going to do, buddy?
23:27How are we going to contact John now?
23:29Let's worry about that later.
23:30Quick, let's get undercover.
23:32In here.
23:33In the cave.
23:36Buddy, Morta, and Travis find themselves trapped.
23:40Overrun by strange, sightless alien creatures.
23:45Unable to contact John Graydon high above them, aboard Columbus,
23:50they appear to be hopelessly stranded in darkness.
23:55Their shuttle has been torn to pieces by the Knight Riders of Calamar.
24:00Indeed, a phantasm of consternation on alien worlds.
24:16THE KNIGHT RIDERS OF CALAMAR
24:27The Knight Riders of Calamar was based on an original story by Dudley Brown
24:32and written by Dudley Brown and Lee Hanson.
24:35Associate producer, Jeff Allen.
24:38Music director, Tom Rounds.
24:40Our engineer was Stu Jacobs.
24:42Assistant to the producer, Lori Tyler and Aaron O'Neill.
24:46Technical consultant, Peter Skye.
24:49Alien Worlds was created, produced, and directed by Lee Hanson
24:53and is distributed by Watermark Incorporated.
24:57And so, until next time, this is Roger Dressler
25:01inviting you to join us for the conclusion of
25:03The Knight Riders of Calamar on Alien Worlds.
25:13THE KNIGHT RIDERS OF CALAMAR
25:21News of an important discovery on distant Calamar
25:25elicits the reactions of space miners from every corner of the galaxy.
25:30Glowstone's been discovered on Calamar!
25:33In an effort to control the lawlessness,
25:36the International Space Authority sends an S.E.T. in
25:40to establish a permanent command post there.
25:43Deciding to shuttle down,
25:46Maura, Travis, and Buddy depart the mothership Columbus
25:50aboard a small craft.
25:52What do you see, Maura? What do you see?
25:54A group of men. Some of them look injured.
25:56They're standing together near some caves.
25:58They're trying to get our attention.
25:59So why don't they turn on a light if they want us to see them?
26:01Only one way to answer that question, Buddy.
26:04I think you're right, Bill. We've got to land this bird.
26:07Upon setting the small craft down on the surface of Calamar,
26:11a turn of events would make it appear
26:14as though they might never get off the planet at all.
26:18Turn off your lights! The creatures are coming!
26:21The Knight Riders can see your lights!
26:24They're attracted by light!
26:26Buddy, listen!
26:27It's them! They're coming, I tell you!
26:30They're coming this way, all right. There must be several hundred of them!
26:33Several hundred what?
26:34Strange creatures. Reptilian, I mean.
26:37They're huge!
26:38They're riding on the backs of those animals I saw earlier.
26:40My God, I don't believe it!
26:42What is it? What is it?
26:43They don't have any eyes!
26:45They appear to be hopelessly stranded in darkness.
26:51Their shuttle has been torn to pieces by the Knight Riders of Calamar.
26:57Indeed, a phantasm of consternation
27:02on Alien Worlds.
27:21As the charging hoofbeats of the Knight Riders fade into the depths,
27:26Buddy, Maura, Travis and the Miners seek refuge in a Calamar cave.
27:34A lot of these men are hurt, Buddy. They need medical attention.
27:37The ISA fleet will be arriving any time.
27:39They'll have a hospital ship with them and plenty of medics.
27:41I could sure use an aspirin.
27:43What's wrong, Travis?
27:45Oh, I just got a little headache. I'll be all right.
27:49Look, I'm going to go outside and get a breath of air.
27:51Could I use the infrared binoculars, Maura?
27:54Oh, sure. Here.
27:56Thanks.
27:58Hey, Travis!
27:59Yeah?
28:00Be careful.
28:02I'm always careful.
28:07Buddy? Where are you?
28:09I'm right here.
28:10Buddy, don't do that!
28:12Do what, my dear? I'm just standing here. You bumped into me.
28:15Well, it's too dark in here to just stand around. Do something!
28:19Whoa! Who's that?
28:22It's okay. I'm a prospector.
28:26What's your name?
28:27Robertson. Don Robertson.
28:30Did you find any glowstone?
28:32Sure did. Hit a strike about two weeks ago.
28:35You alone?
28:37I am now. Had a partner until the day before yesterday. He's dead now.
28:42What happened? Night Riders get him?
28:44Nope. He just fell over. Just like that.
28:49Well, what happened? I mean, what did he die from?
28:52I don't know. He was fine up until three or four days ago.
28:56Started complaining of headaches.
28:58Then he started getting dizzy and falling over things.
29:01Next thing I knew, he was laying dead on the ground.
29:05Then I got overrun by those freaky lizards.
29:08Busted up our ship. Lost all the glowstone.
29:12Oh, I wish I'd never come here.
29:16Who's that?
29:17Who is it?
29:18Oh, it's only me.
29:21Travis, what happened?
29:23Well, I tripped. No big deal.
29:26It's not easy walking through this cave looking through these binoculars at the same time, you know.
29:31Hey, guess what I found outside.
29:35A poker game?
29:37Oh, nope. A shuttle truck.
29:39A land shuttle?
29:41That's right. One of the miners must have abandoned it.
29:44It's a little banged up, but I think I can make it run.
29:46Run? Run where?
29:48Well, we could follow the night riders.
29:51Follow them where? Why?
29:54Because it's better than sitting around here in the dark. That's why.
29:58Wait! Maybe following them is a good idea.
30:02Wait, what is this, mutiny?
30:04In fact, we should follow them.
30:06Well, look, don't you see? We need to study them, learn about them.
30:10Find out why they're destroying the mining camp.
30:12Sounds like you're planning to tag along.
30:14Of course I am. I'm a scientist.
30:16I didn't come here to ignore the native life. I came to study it.
30:20All right.
30:22All right, I'll stay here and see what I can do for these people.
30:25You two go ahead.
30:27But try and be back before dawn, okay?
30:29Otherwise, you're liable to get a real mean tan, you know what I mean?
30:33Meanwhile, back aboard Columbus, John Graydon sits quietly in solitude.
30:49It's been nearly five hours.
30:51Where could they be?
30:53Something's happened, and I sit here doing nothing.
30:57Well, no more.
31:00I'll land this monster by myself, carefully.
31:08See anything yet, Maura?
31:10Nothing but the tracks.
31:12But we're on the right trail. How are you doing?
31:14Well, it's not the driving. It's not being able to see where I'm going.
31:17Don't worry about it. I'll direct you.
31:19Wait a minute. Slow down.
31:21What is it?
31:22Turn left ten degrees.
31:25I'm coming up on a cliff or a crevice or something.
31:28Wait, no. It's a crater.
31:30The animal tracks lead into it.
31:34Don't stop so fast, Travis.
31:36I'm sorry, Maura.
31:38Let me take a look.
31:39Here.
31:42The sides of the crater are too steep for the truck.
31:45We'll have to go the rest of the way on foot.
31:50Well, that won't be easy in this darkness.
31:53And we only have one pair of infrared binoculars.
31:55Well, you walk alongside of me. My turn to guide us with the binoculars.
32:00Maybe we should hold hands?
32:03I thought you'd never ask.
32:06Now, careful now. Watch your step.
32:11You watch your step.
32:13How do you focus these things anyway?
32:16They're a little blurry.
32:18Are you nearsighted?
32:20Oh, yeah. Why?
32:22Push the little button on the top right side.
32:27Oh, yeah. That's better.
32:31What's that?
32:33I don't know. I don't see anything.
32:35Just a lot of rocks.
32:40Travis?
32:43Oh, no, Maura.
32:45Maura, we're surrounded by them.
32:47Don't move.
32:49Get away from us.
32:54Put me down. Help me.
32:57It's got me.
32:59Travis.
33:05Large, two-legged reptilian creatures drag them helplessly into the dark abyss,
33:13deep into the underground and into the dominion of Alien Worlds.
33:31Alien Worlds continues.
33:35An S.E.T. crew of four arrives on Kalamar.
33:39A three-member group sets down on the planet's surface
33:42and are overrun by strange, sightless alien creatures.
33:47The fourth crew member, John Graydon,
33:49having not heard from the others for several hours,
33:52decides to solo fly the giant ship in for a landing.
33:57Infrared scanner's up. Good.
34:01Okay. Between those hills, I'll try and land there.
34:06Big and flat.
34:08What?
34:10Instruments are picking up debris.
34:13Uh-oh, it's a shuttle wreckage.
34:15Coordinates eight, niner, three.
34:19Oh, no, I'm coming in too fast.
34:22I'll reverse thrusters.
34:30Oh. Oh, my head.
34:33Travis, are you all right?
34:35Oh, Maura.
34:37What happened? Where are we?
34:39We've been captured by the Knight Riders.
34:42I wasn't sure if you were going to come, too, or not.
34:44How long have I been out?
34:46A few hours, maybe. I've lost track of time down here.
34:49Down here? Down where? Where are we?
34:52Deep underground in a cavern.
34:55The creatures have us sealed off in this room. We're trapped.
34:59Travis, move over here with me, please.
35:03I can't move, Maura.
35:06I seem to be paralyzed.
35:10They got me.
35:13I can't breathe.
35:20Skipper, up here. This way, John.
35:23My God, there's Buddy.
35:26Thank you, Skip.
35:28I see you discovered the Calamar cool suit.
35:31Yeah, in the survival equipment hold.
35:34That's where they said it'd be.
35:37Buddy, thank goodness you're alive.
35:40Where are the others?
35:42They took out after the Knight Creatures.
35:44Knight Creatures?
35:46Yeah. Oh, boy.
35:48Really weird aliens riding hooved creatures overran us on the shuttle.
35:52I told you not to land.
35:55There was something in the briefing tapes about that.
35:58Said it was a mythical legend.
36:00There's nothing mythical about it, John.
36:02It's definitely real.
36:04And Maura, Travis, did you say they went after them?
36:08Yeah. Travis found a shuttle truck.
36:12Well, I hope they don't get hurt.
36:16Look, I'll go back to the Columbus and get the other Solitarian space suits.
36:22And then you can help me get what medical supplies we've got up there to help the rest.
36:26Okay, but hurry back.
36:27Right.
36:32Don't let people down, Tardos.
36:38Oh, my head. My head hurts.
36:41Maura.
36:43Maura, he talked.
36:45Maura? Maura, are you there?
36:48Yes. Yeah, I'm here.
36:51I'm just trying to get my breath back.
36:53Quiet.
36:55Do not move or we will kill you.
36:59Oh, don't worry, pal. Don't worry.
37:01I'm not going anywhere. I can't see a thing in here.
37:04See? Ah, yes.
37:08Earthlings can see.
37:10A most bizarre ability.
37:14We've come to learn about you.
37:16You've come to destroy us.
37:19No. No, we've no intentions of harming you.
37:22I am Credan, leader of Trollmen.
37:27We are of this world.
37:30Not you.
37:31You speak English. How?
37:33Our translatory linguistic ability is of your galaxy.
37:40You are not the first of your kind to enter our world.
37:45Why have you attacked our people?
37:47You bring the great pain.
37:50Whose pain are you talking about, pal?
37:52What you call light to us is pain.
37:58It is the poison of our wavelengths.
38:01But how do you perceive light if you're blind?
38:04Blindness is relative only to your spectrum of perception.
38:10We are of telepathic senses.
38:14You are disrupting our wavelength.
38:18Altering our sensibilities.
38:21You must leave Galamar.
38:25But what about sunlight? Glowstone?
38:28Enough talk.
38:29Wait, you don't understand. We represent the...
38:32You are an invasion to our universe.
38:36We are not compatible.
38:39What do you plan on doing with us?
38:41We will display your death to your people without mercy.
38:46Then they will know our power and they will leave.
38:51Oh, come on, pal. You don't want to do that.
38:53I've got too many poker games left.
38:55Besides, the miners won't leave.
38:57They could care less about us, believe me.
38:59Silence. It is done.
39:02We ride when night time is again full.
39:08A terminus plan by the leader of the Trowmen
39:12promises the doom of Mora and Travis at sundown.
39:17An exhibition in death by the night riders of Calamar.
39:22As darkness slowly overcasts this alien world.
39:41Alien Worlds continues.
39:45Dusk approaches on an alien planet.
39:49A public execution awaits Mora and Travis,
39:52now prisoners of the night riders of Calamar.
39:56Meanwhile, an ISA fleet streaks across the heavens
40:00into Calamar orbit.
40:06The radios are working again, Captain Baker,
40:08but there's no response from the planet's surface from anyone.
40:11What about the ISA cruiser Columbus?
40:13Have you located its orbit?
40:14She's sitting on the ground. Abandoned.
40:17All right, Lieutenant. Get a landing party together.
40:20Let's get down there and find out what's going on.
40:23Yes, sir.
40:24Oh, I also have a priority mission report from ISA headquarters.
40:28Seems there's been a new development at Jerdal on the glowstone tests.
40:31Let me see it.
40:33Hmm. Very interesting.
40:39Mora.
40:41Mora, I just had a realization.
40:44About what?
40:45Glowstone.
40:46What?
40:47I'm going to reveal it to the night riders.
40:50I have a feeling glowstone is different from other forms of light energy.
40:55That's true.
40:56We know it's in a spectrum of super high ultraviolet energy,
40:59much higher than synthetic light.
41:01That's right.
41:02It could affect them totally different.
41:05Go ahead. It could save our skins.
41:09Hmm. Here they come.
41:12And here goes.
41:16Put the glowstone away, Earthman.
41:19What? What do you mean?
41:21I said put the glowstone away.
41:25Out of exposure.
41:27It is very dangerous to us.
41:30We will die in minutes.
41:32I've got a full hand, pal.
41:34I'll put it away when you insure me you'll listen to what we've got to say.
41:38Go on. It's your deal.
41:40All right, Earthling.
41:43If you wish, we will listen.
41:47Hey, hey, Mara.
41:49Look, the glowstone went out.
41:51It's no longer emitting any light.
41:53Do as he says, Travis. Put it away.
41:56All right.
41:58I wonder why it stopped glowing.
42:00It didn't, Travis.
42:01What do you mean it didn't?
42:03Hey.
42:05Hey, wait a minute.
42:07You mean...
42:08You're going blind, Travis.
42:10Travis, what is it?
42:13My head, it's exploding.
42:18Oh, Mara.
42:21Mara, I feel like I'm dying.
42:26You're not dying, Travis.
42:29I can't stand the pressure in my head.
42:36Travis.
42:38Don't touch me, Mara.
42:41Don't touch me.
42:44Oh, I can't believe it.
42:47I just had a full head.
42:50I had the game.
42:53What happened, Mara?
42:55What happened?
43:00Travis.
43:05Travis.
43:07Your friend is dead.
43:13Travis.
43:15Travis.
43:17We have heard of these effects on your kind from exposure to glowstone,
43:23but I have never actually been witness to this.
43:30What do you mean you've heard of this?
43:33How?
43:34It is the legend of the Light Plane.
43:38Our glowstone is what the Dromund use for guidance.
43:44The deposits of glowstone are calamaring at a wavelength that is perceived by our senses.
43:53That is why we attack your people, for destroying our wavelength.
43:59But how do you know of this affecting humans?
44:02All we know is that certain ones in your world are victims of the Light Plane.
44:09It is a weakness in the eyes of humans that causes death.
44:15Cregan, please.
44:18You've got to help me get back to my people, so that I may warn them of this.
44:22I am with the ISA.
44:24I can put a stop to all this and help your Dromund as well.
44:27I have observed you, Earthwoman.
44:30You show compassion.
44:33I am also quite fascinated by your reaction to your friend's death.
44:40Yes, I will take you to your people.
44:45Can you ensure us they will not attempt an attack?
44:50If we go in peace, there will be no attack.
44:54Then, so be it.
44:57Tardos, prepare to ride to the Earthling encampments.
45:08Captain Baker, SCT Commanders John Graydon and Buddy Griff.
45:13Thank you, Lieutenant.
45:14Welcome to ISA Security Command, gentlemen.
45:17Thank you, Captain Baker.
45:18We've just received a special report on glowstone from the Dridel Institute.
45:22I think you should be made aware of it.
45:24Oh, yeah?
45:25What did the boys in the lab come up with now?
45:27Well, it seems that since the discovery of glowstone on Kalamar six weeks ago,
45:32three of the ten scientists involved with the experiments have died.
45:35From what? The glowstone?
45:38The cause of death was diagnosed as a brain hemorrhage.
45:41Just exactly how the glowstone causes this remains a mystery.
45:45We're expecting further information shortly.
45:48Then, glowstone is harmful to humans?
45:51Not all humans.
45:52The other seven scientists were unaffected.
45:54Captain! Captain! They're here!
45:57The Knight Riders are approaching from the southeast quadrant, sir.
46:00Let me have those glasses, Lieutenant.
46:02There are several hundred of them.
46:04Wait!
46:05In the lead formation.
46:07I don't believe it.
46:09One of the creatures has a woman with it.
46:11Mora?
46:12Let me see, Captain.
46:15Holy Jupiter, it is Mora.
46:18But, where's Travis?
46:25Mora, are you all right?
46:28Yes, buddy, I'm fine.
46:30Where's Travis?
46:32He's, uh, he's dead.
46:36Travis?
46:38Dead?
46:40Oh, come on, Doc, you're putting us on.
46:43That old buzzard will live to be a hundred.
46:45I'm afraid it's true.
46:47But how?
46:49What happened to him?
46:51I'm not sure.
46:53I'm not sure.
46:55But he had all the symptoms of a brain hemorrhage.
46:57What?
46:58Captain, we've just gotten another report from Jodel.
47:02I think you should take a look at this, Dr. Cassidy.
47:05It may answer a few questions.
47:07What's in it?
47:09What's it say?
47:10The scientists that died had a vision deficiency.
47:14They were nearsighted.
47:16Glowstone emits a kind of light wave that triggers a spasm of the optic nerves
47:21and then creates an aneurysm.
47:23What's that?
47:24A ballooning of the blood vessels.
47:26They actually explode, and that's a brain hemorrhage.
47:28Oh, God.
47:31The final poker game.
47:33On Kalamar.
47:35It was through Travis's death that I was able to discover a great deal about the Night Riders.
47:39The Glowstone Underground is their planetary guidance system.
47:43It's how they see.
47:45And our mining it has disrupted that?
47:47That's right.
47:48We're initiating martial law here.
47:50The planet will be closed off to all incoming personnel,
47:54probably open only to scientific studies,
47:56provided we can reach an accord with the aliens here.
47:59That won't be a problem, though.
48:01The ISA has issued a search and seizure of all Glowstone in the star system.
48:05Until we better understand its effect on people with eye deficiencies,
48:09it'll have to remain on Kalamar.
48:11To the better for the Night Riders, too.
48:14Well, I guess there's one thing to be thankful for out of all this.
48:17What's that, buddy?
48:19Well, as S.E.T. members, we all have 20-20 vision.
48:28As the S.E.T. prepares to disembark Kalamar,
48:32a galaxy has been spared an outbreak of the Light Plague.
48:36The dangers of Glowstone have now become true and apparent.
48:42As the search continues for new energy sources in the universe,
48:47man will reflect on this time and place as an offering to understanding
48:53on the threshold of the unknown.
48:58Well, boy, looks as though you are cleaned out.
49:01Not quite. I got a real rare gem here.
49:04It's worth 50,000.
49:06What's it called?
49:08Glowstone.
49:09Let me see that.
49:12Just let me put my glasses on and have a better look.
49:15Oh, lovely. Lovely.
49:18And it glows, too.
49:20Yes.
