Canada looking at investments in US defense shield, says Prime Minister Carney  Canada is looking at potential investments in US President Donald Trump's proposed $175-billion Golden Dome missile defense shield, Prime Minister Mark Carney says on May 21, 2025. Trump said the day before that he had selected a design for the project and named a Space Force general to head the program, which is aimed at blocking threats from China and Russia. Carney, who won an April election in part by promising to stand up to the threat posed by Trump, said he had discussed the concept of the Golden Dome a couple of times with the president. Carney declined to say how much Canada might spend if it decided to take part in the Dome project. 00:00The ambassador also said that there haven't been formal talks on the Golden Dome.

00:05Should Canada take part in that project and how much would you be willing to spend on that?

00:10Okay, well, I'm not going to put a price tag on the second part of your question.

00:15I think I'll say the following about the situation with air defence or ballistic missile defence,

00:22intercontinental ballistic missile defence, broader defence against including potential missiles

00:31that in the not-too-distant future could come from space.

00:35I mean, these are some of the threats that our nation faces.

00:39We take those threats seriously.

00:42We take our responsibilities as a government seriously, as I just said.

00:45It's one of the reasons why we made the commitment back in March for the over-the-horizon radar,

00:50the first phase of the over-horizon radar system, and that was an independent decision that we took.

00:57We are conscious that we have an ability, if we so choose,

01:04to complete the Golden Dome with investments and partnership.

01:10And it's something that we are looking at and something that has been discussed at a high level,

01:16but I'm not sure one negotiates on this.
