JP and BMitch are excited to see the Lions have withdrawn a rule proposal that would have seeded NFL playoff teams by record rather than divisions.
Transcript
00:00The Lions have withdrawn their proposal to change playoff seating.
00:05Let me ask you a question.
00:06Why did the Lions come up with that?
00:09They had home field and lost.
00:13I mean, maybe you're trying to look broadly rather than just at last season
00:18and say, you know, what if we had lost to Minnesota,
00:21then we'd be the five seed despite winning 14 games.
00:24Okay.
00:25But they lost at home, which lets them know that it comes down to
00:29who plays the best at that.
00:31My thing is not about specific playoff results based on seating.
00:38My thing is, if you're going to have divisions
00:41and you're going to double up the division games,
00:44if that's the one set of teams you play twice every year,
00:48then you have to reward division players.
00:51Yeah, you have to have some weight on that.
00:53If you want to scrap divisions
00:56or scrap the home-and-home of division play,
01:00then sure, reseed it.
01:02Yeah.
01:02But I just, I don't think you can have one without the other in that capacity.
01:07Yeah.
01:08I just don't get it, you know.
01:10It's like today, everyone is looking for the easy way out.
01:15Instead of just, like when I saw in my time,
01:19two times they were the sixth seed, the Giants, right?
01:22And they went to the Super Bowl and won it.
01:25I don't know if they were the sixth, but they were a wild card.
01:27They were a wild card.
01:28And I think their wild card, I think it was sixth one time
01:32when they beat the Patriots when they were undefeated.
01:36Yeah.
01:36So my question is, just be better than everybody at that time.
01:41You know, if we had done something like that, you know, back then,
01:47would it have been like that?
01:48But it's shown when you're the best on Sunday or Saturday, you win.
01:56You can't just be, like, I remember we in Philly were like,
02:00we got to get home field advantage.
02:02You know what we did in the NFC Championship game?
02:04Lost.
02:06At home.
02:07Because you got to figure out what your focus is.
02:10Is your focus to get home field or your focus to win a Super Bowl?
02:13I think the Giants, the year they beat the undefeated Pats,
02:17had to play three straight road playoff games.
02:20They beat, I think they beat at Tampa, at Dallas, at Green Bay.
02:23I know the NFC title game was in Green Bay.
02:25I remember that very well.
02:26So, I mean, I just, I don't believe in just making things easier for people.
02:33Yeah, I don't, I don't know that it,
02:35I think the NFL is such a game of specific circumstances to that day.
02:42Yeah.
02:42Right?
02:43Like, I think, like, I don't know what happens in the Lions commanders divisional
02:49playoff win where Washington went up there and was a better team.
02:52What if David Montgomery didn't make this crazy comeback from what looked like a
02:57major knee injury and the Lions felt some obligation to make sure they got
03:01Montgomery the ball, right?
03:02Like, if Montgomery wasn't playing and it was just Gibbs all day,
03:05like, to me, I'm not focused on specific games because the most memorable
03:11home playoff division winner, the Beastquake.
03:15I think of that Marshawn Lynch play.
03:17I think the Seahawks were 7-9 and the Saints were, like, 11-5 or something,
03:21right?
03:21Like, to me, if you're going to value divisions,
03:26then the division championship has to have some value.
03:29Yeah.
