00:00Hello and welcome to our last episode of Kent Student 101 live here on KMTV. I'm Isaac Bass
00:26Bainbridge and I'm Tyler Choke Periam and this is a show for students by students. Each week we have
00:31explored different facets of student life across Kent with a range of topics and segments. This week
00:36we're going to be doing things a little differently. Yeah we're both going to be chatting to guests
00:40about essentially ourselves. Yep we're just full-on ego boosting this episode. Not really but we're
00:46having a look at our placement year and how we made Student 101 so still we are talking about
00:51ourselves. So for once let's not quite take a break and not take a breath and join Kate Buddle.
00:56for today's Buddles Book Club.
01:03Okay so would you say reading is a budget friendly hobby? I would say a thousand percent reading can
01:10be as flexible to your budget as you need it to be. Personally I read for my degree and personally
01:15in my private life so the prices can really add up especially when books and waterstones can go
01:21between like 10 and 11 pounds. But as someone who really enjoys reading from mindfulness it can be
01:28such a fantastic way of de-stressing so I found there are many ways to enjoy books without spending
01:32a fortune. So what would you say your top ways to buy books without breaking the ban car? A classic is
01:38charity shops obviously. There are so many classic and contemporary titles that are sold. Mostly between the
01:45one to three pound range. In fact Oxfam sells about 12 million secondhand copies each year and I found so
01:52many popular titles like the ACOTAR series or the Love Hypothesis as well as some lesser known treasures.
01:58So it's a perfect way to experiment with different genres in a budget friendly way. What would you do if you didn't have the time to search in person?
02:04Well there are obviously amazing reselling websites like World of Books or Book Finder but for me personally my biggest
02:13recommendation would be to read books you already own or do book swaps with your friends. I do it with my friends
02:19all the time and it's a really great way to get the social aspect of reading going and to make reading fun
02:24without spending anything. Thank you so much.
02:36We are joined by Bartholomew Hall, a senior broadcast journalist at KMTV to talk about what internships they have to offer.
02:45Now you were an intern initially, could you tell us a bit about your experience?
02:49Yes, so I took the year in journalism course at the University of Kent and part of that was the opportunity to become an intern at KMTV.
02:58It was a bit of a leap but it was one of the reasons why I took the journalism course as I knew that KMTV was offering internships at the time.
03:06I saw the sort of pictures of the gallery who were doing all the work to make this go live at the moment and I thought that's what I want to be doing.
03:12I want to be in the room, you know, putting TV on, working on live broadcasts and then because of that I managed to fall in love with journalism just that little bit extra
03:21because I was there, I was doing it, I was putting packages together, I was interviewing people and I realised, oh, you know what, I might want to do this as a job one day.
03:28And having that actual hands-on experience is what led me on to having the job at KMTV because I realised I loved it so much.
03:35It's a good start with like internships, it helps you actually look and have an experience trying it out first rather than fully diving into it and realising you don't quite like it.
03:44Yeah, definitely.
03:45So was working in television always your plan?
03:48Well, so I took a media studies degree because I've always been interested in being behind the camera, telling stories in different ways, I did lots of years in theatre as well.
03:56But I had this keen interest in media and the way that we tell stories and the new and evolving ways of that happening as well, whether it's through social media or television.
04:06So I took my media studies degree as a way to go, right, what is it I want to be doing? What medium do I want to find?
04:11And so, yeah, it wasn't the plan all from the start, but coming to KMTV and having that hands-on experience and going out and making fun packages like this is what made me decide, yeah, it is TV is what I want to do now.
04:23Yeah, I was there for that package, I did the little film behind you. Is there anything that you're particularly proud of working on at KMTV?
04:30There's lots of different things. You get to speak with some amazing people and you find yourself following around some stories that you never would have thought of.
04:37I've obviously done a lot of sports stuff, you're seeing a lot of it on the screen now.
04:41Invicta Sport is a show that I sort of brought back from the ashes of what was a previous sports show on KMTV.
04:50And I really wanted to have it as a foundation for local sports clubs, the voices that we wouldn't usually hear on TV, to have them a chance to tell their story and share what it is they do.
05:03That's brilliant. Thank you so much for joining us today.
05:06And thank you for helping us with our show as well.
05:08Absolutely.
05:09Finally, let's hear what our resident student Sam has to say about the goings on behind cameras of Student 101.
05:15Hello, and welcome to the final episode of Sam Says. This has been a part of the show each week where I've given you my advice that will hopefully help you out with your university experiences.
05:31This week, we're going to be talking about placements. And this is a perfect thing for me because it's something that I've been doing for this entirety of the time.
05:38And honestly, the reason I've been making this show, we're going to take you through a tour of KMTV and show you how we put together Student 101 as a show.
05:48Let's get into it.
05:50The first thing I'm going to talk about as part of my placement is Student 101 and how we actually create the show.
05:55I'm stood here in the gallery. This is where the magic goes on. We control the sound, the visuals, and where we come in at six o'clock to all sit around and watch the show happen.
06:04We spend a lot of time in this gallery. We do different shows, different pre-recordings, and we've all been trained throughout our time here on this placement.
06:11This has given us lots of skills, but will be so useful for our future.
06:15Another part of this placement that I've found super helpful is the way it's helped me improve my ability in front of the camera and my confidence.
06:21Speaking of being in front of the camera, we've got Zoe here to talk to us about how it is to be a PA. How have you found your time at KMTV?
06:28I found my time here really exciting. I've learned so much and it's great just to see what's behind the camera, which you don't normally see when you're at home being a viewer.
06:35Honestly, I felt the same. It's been so interesting learning about the process behind the scenes and all of that stuff.
06:41And it's honestly, seeing you when you first came in and how intimidated we all were was a lot, right?
06:46Oh my God, it was terrifying.
06:48I would like to develop my editing skills a bit because I'm very bad at things like Procreate and anything Adobe.
06:57And I'd also like to kind of learn a bit about the gallery.
07:00Throughout the time, it's been so helpful to just become a part of it and feel like part of the team.
07:05And I feel like that's what the aim of an internship is and what a placement is.
07:09Yeah, I feel like as I've been here, every day I get a little bit more confident on how to run my own show kind of thing and the elements that they teach us here.
07:16Thank you for watching the final episode of Sam Says.
07:19This week, I've been talking about placements.
07:21I hope you've learned about the experience of my placement.
07:23They've given you some inspiration and some thought on where you want to go if you would like to do a placement.
07:28Thank you for watching from all of the Sam Says and Studio 101 team.
07:32And I'll see you again soon, maybe.
07:34Goodbye.
07:46So, as this is our final show, we thought we would sit and have a little chat since we've never done this before together, really.
07:53Yeah, it's odd.
07:54We've never actually been in the same room before.
07:56No.
07:57No, we haven't, no.
07:58Never seen you in my life.
07:59No, I don't know you.
08:00But what has been your most memorable moment here?
08:03Oh, I'd have to go with, oh, probably second week, BBC week, where we were just kind of thrust into the thick of it.
08:16And it was such a kind of learn on the job.
08:19Yeah.
08:20Really, you either pick it up quickly or you're kind of like, ah, we're not really easy so much.
08:25But it was, I mean, I made great friends with my group.
08:28I think we all kind of trauma bonded a little bit.
08:30Yeah.
08:31Yeah, no, it was really fun.
08:32Looking back on it, I appreciate how much fun I really had.
08:35Yeah.
08:36How about you?
08:37I think the open day, really, and actually meeting everyone and learning about what it is that we would be doing.
08:44So I was considering other things outside of an internship, but I'm glad that I've chosen to do this.
08:51And that open day really opened my eyes to it, really.
08:54So it's definitely moved me towards the right direction, I think.
08:58No, absolutely.
08:59And, well, kind of inversely, what's been your most stressful moment, do you think?
09:03The first time doing this, I think, will always have a haunting figure over me where it just was so scary to do it.
09:13But now I'm just chill.
09:14It's completely fine.
09:15You get used to it.
09:16I never thought I would do it.
09:18But I'm really glad that I did.
09:20Still, the first time scared me so much.
09:23So what about you, though?
09:25Well, mine's also shoot 101 related.
09:28I mean, I think I've got more stressed as it's gone on, weirdly.
09:32I've developed an iTwitch exclusively on Wednesdays, which I don't think is very healthy.
09:37But, well, last week I had to do a package for Gym 101, obviously.
09:44Yes.
09:45On my own with them.
09:47I ended up poaching people to help me from Made in Kent, which was very nice of them.
09:51Thank you so much to them.
09:52Yeah.
09:53But the footage corrupted on the first day I was going to edit.
09:56So I had to quickly message the rugby CCCU captain.
09:59She was lovely about it.
10:00Yeah.
10:01She went and filmed it and I had to run in on Wednesday with Cates under my arms as well.
10:04Yeah.
10:05Just editing about an hour and a half.
10:07Which, not ideal.
10:08Yeah.
10:09Well, what's been your favourite role in the office?
10:11I'm positive.
10:12Presenting.
10:13Definitely.
10:14Yeah.
10:15It's, in a way, I think it's definitely the easiest.
10:18Yeah.
10:19Because theatre kid.
10:20But, yeah, I mean, I also get kind of a taste of each role around it as well.
10:26How about you?
10:27I think presenting as well.
10:28I mean, there's loads of different roles that have been involved in this, but I've mainly
10:33experienced the presenting.
10:34I mean, we had kind of a week of doing editor.
10:36And, yeah, shout out to the editors that do it.
10:41Very stressful for them.
10:42But doing this has been, it's been a lot of fun.
10:44But that's all I have for that, really.
10:47And you've been watching Kent Student 1 for the final time.
