During a press briefing on Monday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) spoke about the selection of Marva Johnson to be president of Florida A&M University.
Transcript
00:00Thanks.
00:01Thank you, Mr. Weir.
00:02I'm trying to point at the University, you made more of a Johnson to be their next president
00:07to come back last on her political ties to Trump and her lack of academic experience.
00:13Critics view this as part of Project 2025's trend of trying to take over boards and undermine
00:20HBCUs.
00:21You've mentioned that Republicans lied about Project 2025.
00:25How do you view the takeover of HBCUs as part of that campaign to undermine HBCUs?
00:31As someone who's supportive of HBCUs, what's your message to students out there who are
00:36concerned about the leadership that are being installed in this situation?
00:39Well, this particular individual appears deeply unqualified and unprepared to carry out the
00:46mission of Florida A&M University.
00:49And it's my suspicion that she will not last long at the institution.
00:55She will be a failure.
00:58And we are not going to allow the Trump administration to take over historically black colleges and
01:06universities across the country to whitewash our history.
01:11And to try to indoctrinate the young people of America with their extreme and failing ideology.
01:20Republicans and far right extremists are failing.
01:25They're failing as it relates to the economy.
01:27They're failing as it relates to races that are taking place all across the country.
01:33They're failing in courts.
01:36And we're not going to let them take their failed track record, one disaster after the next,
01:45and allow them to pretend as if they've got some capacity or expertise to, of all things,
01:53be leading our historically black colleges and universities.
