00:00It's a question of money with these fellows, isn't it?
00:08We have the British Treasury behind us.
00:10Oh, if it's on the market, I'll buy it.
00:12If it means another penny on the income tax.
00:15Come in.
00:17Excuse me, Mr. Holmes.
00:18Mrs. Hudson, what is it?
00:22Lady Hilda Trelawney Hope.
00:26Show her in.
00:30Has my husband been here, Mr. Holmes?
00:37Yes, he has been here.
00:38Mr. Holmes, I implore you not to tell him I came here.
00:43Your lady, she puts me in a very delicate position.
00:45I beg of you to sit down and tell me what it is you desire.
00:47But I cannot make you any unconditional promise.
00:53Gentlemen, I will speak frankly to you
00:55in the hope that it will induce you to speak frankly in return.
00:59There is complete confidence between my husband and myself
01:10in all matters except one.
01:13That one is politics.
01:14On this, his lips are sealed.
01:15He tells me nothing.
01:17Now, I am aware that there was a most deplorable occurrence
01:21in our house last night.
01:23I know that a paper has disappeared.
01:25But because the matter is political,
01:27my husband refuses to take me into his complete confidence.
01:30Now, it is essential, essential, I say,
01:34that I should thoroughly understand it.
01:36You are the only people, save these politicians,
01:39who know the true facts.
01:40At least I presume you do.
01:42You presume correctly, madam.
01:45I beg you, then, tell me exactly what has happened
01:48and what it may lead to.
01:52Tell me all, Mr. Holmes.
01:54Let no regard for my husband's interests keep you silent,
01:57for I assure you that his interests,
01:59if he would only see it,
02:00would be best served by taking me into his complete confidence.
02:03What was this paper which was stolen?
02:07Madam, what you ask me is really impossible.
02:10You must see that this is so.
02:16I mean, if your husband thinks fit to keep you in the dark over this matter,
02:19is it for me, who has only learned the true facts
02:21under the pledge of professional secrecy,
02:23to tell what he has withheld?
02:27Is it not unfair to ask it?
02:30It is he who you must ask.
02:31I have asked him.
02:32I come to you as a last resource.
02:37But, without you telling me anything definite,
02:40you may do me a great service
02:41if you would enlighten me on one point.
02:43What is it, madam?
02:48Is my husband's political career
02:51likely to suffer through this incident?
02:56Well, let me say that if it is not put right,
02:58it may have a very unfortunate effect.
03:00Oh.
03:02One more question, Mr. Holmes.
03:11From an expression which my husband dropped
03:13in the first shock of the disaster,
03:16I understood the terrible public consequences
03:18might arise from the loss of this document.
03:20If he said so, I cannot deny it.
03:22Of what nature are they?
03:24There again,
03:25you ask me more than I can possibly answer.
03:31Then I will waste no more of your time.
03:32I cannot blame you, Mr. Holmes,
03:38for refusing to speak more freely.
03:40And you on your side will not, I'm sure,
03:42think the worst of me
03:43because I desire to share my husband's anxieties,
03:46even against his will.
03:47Once more, I beg, you will say nothing of my visit.
03:58I say, what a really remarkable and beautiful woman.
04:08The fair sex is your department, Watson.
04:14What did she really want?
04:15Surely her own statement was clear
04:17and her anxiety very natural.
04:19Think of her appearance, Watson.
04:21Her manner, her suppressed excitement,
04:22her restlessness,
04:24her tenacity in asking questions.
04:25Remember, she is the youngest daughter
04:27of the Duke of Belminster
04:28and comes of a cast that does not lightly show emotion.
04:30She was certainly much moved.
04:33And you observed, of course,
04:35how she manoeuvred to have her back to the light.
04:38She did not wish us to read her expression too closely.
04:41Yes, she chose that chair in the whole room.
04:43And yet the motives of women are so inscrutable.
04:46I mean, how could you build on such a quicksand?
04:49Their most trivial action may mean volumes
04:51or their most extraordinary conduct
04:53may depend upon a hairpin or a curling tongs.
04:56Yeah.
04:57Good morning, Watson.
04:58You off, then?
04:59Yes.
04:59Yes.
05:06Hopes!
05:07Was one of the agents you spoke of
05:09called Eduardo Lucas?
05:10Yes.
05:11Of Godolphin Street?
05:15Yes.
05:16You'll not see him.
05:17Why not?
05:18He was murdered in his house last night.
05:22Heavens.
05:23Does it say murder?
05:30Murder in Westminster.
05:31Crime of a mysterious character.
05:33Eduardo Lucas, unmarried, 34,
05:35well-known in society,
05:36circles on account of his charming personality.
05:39Valet out for the evening.
05:40They always are.
05:40Elderly housekeeper sleeps atop of the house, heard nothing.
05:43They never do.
05:43Just before midnight, police constable Barrett saw a door ajar,
05:47found Lucas's woman disorder, Lucas stabbed to the heart.
05:50Oh, let me see.
05:53Oh, let me see.
05:56Russian military dagger.
05:58Robbery does not appear to be the motive.
06:00Valuable collection untouched.
06:01What do you make of this, Watson?
06:04Well, it's an amazing coincidence.
06:08Coincidence?
06:09Here is one of the three men we have named
06:12as possible actors in this drama,
06:14and he meets a violent end during the very hours
06:16we know that drama is enacted.
06:18The odds are enormously against it being a coincidence.
06:21The two events are connected.
06:23Must be connected.
06:28It is for us to find the connection.
06:30By now, the police must know all.
06:33No, not at all.
06:34They know all they see at Godolphin Street.
06:36They know and shall know nothing at Whitehall Terrace.
06:40Only we know of both events
06:41and can trace the relation between them.
06:44It is with the late Eduardo Lucas
06:46that the solution to our problem lies.
06:51But it is a capital mistake
06:53to theorize in advance of the facts.
06:55Do you stay here, my good Watson?
06:58I will join you when I am able.

09:33breakfast mr. Holmes. no no no thank you mrs. Hartson I don't want to. I don't know you'll fade away at this rate.
10:00I say Holmes. they found the murderer. or rather murderess. indeed. there's a wife from Paris. apparently Lucas was leading a double life. he had a creole wife in France where he called himself Henri Fournay. the woman was reported to the police yesterday by her servants. she is quite insane. a mania of a dangerous and permanent form. poor woman. but listen to this. the same woman was seen in the neighborhood of godolphin street on the night of the murder and later made an emotional scene at charing cross
10:29station. what do you think of that? oh my dear Watson you are so long suffering. if I've told you nothing over these last few days it's because there is nothing to tell. even now this report from Paris doesn't help us much.
10:41well surely it's final as regards Lucas's death. the man's death is a mere incident. a trivial episode in comparison with our real task. which is to trace the document and save a european catastrophe.
10:53now if the letter were loose. no it cannot be loose. but if it isn't loose where can it be? who has it? why is it held back?
11:05well if Lestrade found it amongst Lucas's papers he's not such a fool as to announce it. he would inform the chief commissioner. the chief commissioner would inform the home secretary and he in turn the prime minister. no it's not among Lucas's papers.
11:19but why is it held back? that is the question which beats in my brain like a hammer.
11:29was it a mere coincidence that Lucas should meet his death on the night when the letter disappeared? did it ever reach him?
11:39has this mad wife of his taken it with her to Paris? if so is it in her house in Paris?
11:45should i go to Paris? that would alert the french police. now every man's hand is against us. and yet...
11:57the interests at stake are colossal.
12:03now should i bring...
12:15if so, pardon me.
12:29now should i do this for you.
12:35so
