00:00...of the world!
00:04Hey Mambo, Mambo Italiano
00:07Hey hey Mambo, Mambo Italiano
00:11Listen to the crowd!
00:18Shimaka pushes Montoya clean off the roof!
00:23What incredible golf!
00:30Hamilton is full-throated!
00:34What was he doing?
00:55Buongiorno and a very warm welcome to Imola
00:58It's round 7 of the 2025 season
01:01the first race in Europe
01:03and to the heartland of Ferrari
01:05The dedicated Tifosi have lined the sun-kissed banks
01:09and are ready for a great weekend
01:15And it is the land of fast cars and slow food
01:18I want to get some kind of reaction from the girls
01:20but sorry, they're busy eating
01:22How is it?
01:23It's quite hard to eat with the microphone as well
01:25and mine's tomato so I'm a bit worried about the iPhone
01:27It's all about priorities
01:29Go on then, get stuck in
01:31I just want some sort of review from you both
01:36Then I'm going to make her talk when she's full
01:40This is a very special place to both eat and go racing
01:44Just tell us about the vibe here
01:46in this very pretty little paddock garden that we've managed to find
01:49I'd say that's a 10 out of 10
01:51I didn't know where you were going with that
01:52I was going to say mine's really good
01:54and I'm a bit jealous of yours actually
01:56Arragu
01:59Tell us why this place is so very special
02:02It's got an old soul, hasn't it?
02:04It's beautiful to come to tracks like this
02:06You walk around, there's lots of elevation change
02:09It is quite narrow, which is a problem for these new F1 cars
02:12but you can really feel the history
02:14You can really feel that weight of F1
02:16The full 75 years it almost feels like
02:19as you walk around
02:21So much passion from the fans
02:23We see so many fans here
02:24It's really busy as soon as you go outside the paddock
02:26Even in the paddock it feels quite busy
02:28than what it's been in the last few
02:30It's just a beautiful place to come
02:32What about it as a challenge for the drivers?
02:35Because it seems like a place that can really bite back
02:38punish the smallest of mistakes
02:40and I feel as if that's something that the drivers really relish
02:43Exactly, this is one of those tracks when everyone talks about
02:45coming back to an old school track
02:47or they talk about track limits
02:49and why don't we go to those tracks that don't have that as an issue
02:51This is more one of those
02:53You make a mistake, you're either in the gravel or you're in the barrier
02:56and we've seen that in both practice sessions
02:58Two drivers, two rookies
03:00Very small mistakes end up in the barriers
03:02So I love that about this track
03:04I think the drivers love that about this track
03:06I think it's special to drive
03:07I think every lap feels nice
03:09It's a tricky track to race at sometimes
03:11It's hard to overtake
03:12but that doesn't take away what is a great track
03:14OK, well let's find out, shall we?
03:16You can hear from the drivers on Imola now
03:18This is only one hour away from where I used to live
03:21in Sassuolo
03:23I spent a lot of my time here in Emilia-Romagna
03:26over the last four years
03:28A place that I love
03:29So many restaurants around the area that I've been to
03:32I always felt very loved from all the Tifosi
03:35from all the people around this area
03:37so it almost feels like a second home to me
03:39It's one of the tracks you drive for many years
03:41I've driven here since 2015, 2016
03:45so I've been here a long time
03:47like almost 10 years
03:49Old style circuit, old school
03:52with many traps here and there
03:55and it's going to be interesting to see
03:57with this generation of cars
03:59how we can deal
04:01also with traffic, which is a very narrow track
04:04In the first few years of McLaren
04:05these were some of our best races
04:07Some of my first podiums were here
04:09so a good race last year
04:12and the plan is to have another one this year
04:14This one is my proper home race
04:16because of course we have Monza as well
04:19but I live probably 30 minutes away from the track
04:24so I would say this is my proper home race
04:27and I'm really excited
04:28I really like the track as well
04:30I think it's a really challenging track
04:33old school
04:34but it's really good fun to drive around here
04:39Now despite the clear love for the place
04:41there are rumours that it won't stay on the calendar
04:44Do you think there is an argument to say
04:46that F1 has outgrown Imola?
04:48I mean not just in terms of the logistics of the place
04:52but also in terms of the cars being incredibly wide
04:55for a track like this
04:56I don't know if outgrown is necessarily the right word
04:59I think it's great we're in a place with Formula 1
05:02and it's great that in Italy we have two Formula 1 races here
05:05but do we need two Italian Grands Prix?
05:07That's more the question from my side
05:09The racing in my opinion is good here
05:11regardless of the lack of sometimes overtaking
05:13I think the atmosphere is great
05:14I love the Tifosi
05:15but I think when we're growing so greatly in this sport
05:19maybe we could look to go to somewhere different
05:21somewhere new
05:22we could try a completely different track
05:23in a completely different location
05:24I suppose the issue with there being somewhere new
05:26is it doesn't evoke emotion in the same way
05:28this place
05:29you can't get away from the fact that
05:31there's celebration and sadness
05:33and you really feel that when you come here don't you?
05:35Yeah you do, 100% you feel it
05:37and if anyone takes a walk through the park
05:39to the memorial there
05:41you do really feel that
05:43it's a very passionate place
05:45but I sort of agree with Jamie
05:47qualifying is going to be so important here
05:49we're going to love watching the laps tomorrow
05:51for sure
05:52the racing is more tricky
05:54there's lots of places on the calendar
05:55where racing and overtaking in particular is tricky
05:57so maybe we need to look a little bit at the size of the cars
06:00that would be my approach to it
06:02obviously that's not a short term solution to it
06:05but I think that there is scope for it
06:08we've got such a mix of tracks
06:10we've got many new tracks that we love
06:12Baku is one that comes to mind
06:14that's coming up later in the year
06:15that's a new track
06:16there's quite a lot through that
06:18lots of different sections
06:19the racing is really good
06:20the qualifying is really good
06:21so we shouldn't just discount all the new tracks
06:24and I like having the mix
06:26I like having the mix between the old and the new ones
06:28variation is everything isn't it?
06:29Yeah
06:30OK let's have a little recap then
06:31of what happened today
06:32and head down to Harry and Ant at the Skypad
06:36Yes well the beginning of the European leg of the season
06:39Friday's running done and dusted
06:40and it was a beautiful day out in Imola
06:43around this fantastic circuit
06:45absolutely looking lovely in the sunshine
06:48very green track though to begin with
06:50and green again for Franco Colopinto
06:52returning to the fold
06:53pressure too for home hero Kimi Antonelli
06:56Thank you gentlemen
06:57OK so these are your timesheets then for FP2
07:00the McLarens separated by two and a half hundredths
07:04Yeah Gaz you're putting in a great time there
07:06and then two and a half tenths
07:08separating Russell in P4
07:10down to Hamilton in P11
07:18Olly Behrman managed to finish the day in 12th
07:21a few struggles for Franco Colopinto on his 10th Grand Prix
07:25but his first with Alpine
07:27Ocon having a really tough day down in 20th
07:30as was the case in FP1
07:32OK someone else who also struggled a bit this morning
07:35and a couple of issues this afternoon
07:37Max Verstappen he finished in 5th in FP2
07:40let's hear from him now
07:44Sum up your day Max
07:45did you find a way with the car
07:47did it improve over the course of the day?
07:49We tried a lot of bits
07:51some worked a bit better than others
07:53but yeah overall not fast enough at the moment
07:56Yeah I mean obviously qualifying is going to be very important here
08:00we've got the new tyre
08:03Level of confidence that you can threaten the top positions?
08:08At the moment not very high
08:10yeah we definitely need a bit more work to
08:13yeah just get a better through corner balance to go faster
08:17I think it's the same in the long runs
08:20I mean I got overtaken by the McLarens
08:22so that says enough right?
08:23they pull away
08:25but even then compared to other teams around us
08:27I think at the moment it's
08:29yeah it was a bit tough today
08:31Thank you
08:34Well Oscar on the face of it
08:36it looks like a pretty solid day
08:38that everything goes smoothly from your perspective
08:42reasonably yes
08:44I think there's still some things we want to
08:46try and work on and improve
08:49you know this wouldn't be the first Friday
08:52where we've looked strong
08:53and then everyone's found a bit more going into qualifying
08:55so I think we still want to find a bit more
08:58but everything's gone pretty smoothly
09:00you know the car's feeling decent
09:02still a few more things to tweak
09:03but all in all not bad
09:06Do you think it's between yourself and Lando
09:08and is it going to be pretty vital
09:11Saturday in terms of the ultimate outcome on Sunday?
09:14Yes I mean Saturday has been very important
09:16pretty much everywhere this year
09:18I think Imola is
09:19you know regardless of what the rest of this year
09:21has looked like
09:22Imola is a place where qualifying means a lot
09:24and that is going to be important
09:26but at the moment I don't think it's just Lando and I
09:29I think there's a few others
09:31that will join us in the fight tomorrow
09:34so we've got to keep our heads down
09:37and try and find a bit more
09:38Thank you
09:39Thanks
09:40Well Bernie as Oscar says
09:42it has been something of a qualifying championship
09:44throughout the season
09:46perhaps even more significant here though
09:48given how difficult it is to overtake
09:50how important will tomorrow be?
09:52Yeah I think we've seen that qualifying is very important
09:55I think across both McLarens in particular
09:58you know who gets P1 is going to be very important
10:01and like Jamie said at the end of the show
10:03who hits the run into turn 1
10:05who comes out of turn 1, 2
10:07or turn 2 really it is
10:09in that lead position
10:11it gains so much
10:13it gains track position
10:15but you can manage your tyres as much as you want then
10:18if you're in the lead of the race
10:19particularly here when overtaking is difficult
10:22you can drive a little bit off the pace
10:24and really control your tyres
10:26and that is going to be very very important
10:28for whoever comes out of that first few corners in the lead
10:32Now Oscar doesn't believe
10:33it is just between him and his team mate
10:35for the race win this weekend
10:37Max Verstappen clearly a candidate
10:39he's done very very well here in the past
10:41I mean he's talking down his chances there
10:42he's done a little bit down beat didn't he
10:44but this is a circuit
10:45he's put it on pole
10:47and he's won the last 3 out of 4 times
10:49so what's to stop him doing it again this weekend?
10:52I think Oscar and McLaren know
10:54not to count anyone out
10:56especially with Max qualifying in his form
10:58I think in terms of what they're probably capable of
11:01it's looking tough
11:02and I think what we've seen in recent races
11:04is that Red Bull and Max in particular
11:06fighting very very hard in the opening laps
11:09as he would and as he should to be honest
11:11from pole position
11:12getting in these battles
11:14and then his tyres just cannot last the race
11:16as McLaren's can and he can't keep with them
11:19so I think the main thing is going to be
11:21how hard he pushes them in the early phases of the race
11:23obviously where they qualify
11:25the thing I find interesting here is
11:26obviously in Jeddah we have this track limit situation
11:28where you can attempt to stay around the outside of turn 1
11:31and you can sort of hold it if you go off track
11:34here you don't have that
11:35it's old school
11:36you're going in the gravel, you're going off
11:37so if anyone tries to fight each other
11:39if it's teammates or if it's Max
11:41or even what we saw in Miami
11:43it's going to be a whole different ballgame
11:44so I think that's going to be the one interesting thing we'll see
11:46fascinating stuff
11:47Ferrari will certainly be looking for a very strong race
11:51their first home race of the season
11:54and of course Lewis Hamilton's first time racing in red
11:58in front of the Tifosi
11:59we granted special access to Maranello
12:02that's on the way after the break
12:12Maranello is a sacred destination for F1 fans
12:16and they opened the gates to Craig Slater earlier this week
12:18and he sat down with Fred Vasseur
12:21We saw Lewis today interact with fans
12:25what about his acclimatisation to Ferrari?
12:28Can you bring us up to date with where he feels he's at?
12:31I think it's a combination of different factors
12:34that first the car is not at the level that we were expecting
12:37I would say that as long as the collaboration is positive
12:41constructive and so
12:42that we are improving on the understanding of each other
12:47Forgive me but did you talk about team reading?
12:49Under pressure with the result
12:51they are not happy sometimes with the result
12:53or with the strategy or whatever
12:55or with the balance of the car
12:59It's a special weekend
13:00it'll be special for Lewis
13:01can you sum up the excitement around this place
13:03and what that's like
13:04and the pressure on you I suppose to deliver something
13:07for the fans to get excited
13:09Yeah but I don't need to have the fans to have the pressure
13:11I'm putting the pressure on myself in a different way
13:14I think it's more an extra motivation than something else
13:17It's true that Imola and Monza for us are a special test
13:21Thank you for opening your doors to us today
13:24and we hope that you are knocking on the door
13:26with some strong results this weekend and the weekend
13:33And you can see the full version of that interview
13:35on our coverage tomorrow
13:37Now Bernie we come here
13:39we feel the sense of anticipation
13:43of the Tifosi
13:44just how much pressure is Fred Vasseur under this weekend?
13:47Yeah I think he said in one interview
13:49a point it's no more pressure than he's putting on himself
13:52but you do feel it at a track like that
13:54there'll be more fans than ever
13:56when he's driving in and out every night
13:58it'll be lined with Ferrari fans
14:00you end up doing
14:01just like he's done there
14:02just like that piece he's done for us
14:03you'll do more marketing
14:05more talking to guests
14:07more sponsors
14:08there'll be lots more
14:09everything they do in a normal weekend
14:11there'll be more of that here
14:12so he'll be busier
14:14and that will bring more expectation as well
14:17lots of people like us
14:18will be asking him
14:19how are you going to excel this weekend?
14:21how are you going to do better
14:22than you've done in the previous few weekends?
14:24So it does bring pressure
14:26and we know how much it means to the fans here
14:29a good result here
14:31would really carry a number of bad results
14:33at other points during the year
14:34because they'll remember the win here
14:36more than any other
14:37They really will
14:38I mean the Tifosi is just another level
14:40I mean you saw actually from the crowds
14:42today on a Friday
14:43how much it means to them
14:45it really matters
14:47it feels like the whole of Italy
14:49are behind one team
14:50more so perhaps than a driver
14:51It really does
14:52and honestly one of my best memories of Formula 1
14:54is 2019 and Charles winning in Monza
14:57and just seeing the sea of red
14:59underneath that podium
15:00it's incredible
15:01and I think when you come here as well
15:02and you drive into the track
15:04and I think also what we saw
15:05when Lewis first ever drove
15:07or tested with Ferrari
15:09just the amount of passion there is
15:11and I think that's what makes sport
15:12that's why we love sport
15:13that's what everyone gets behind
15:15and you can't ignore that
15:16of course they're focused on their jobs
15:18they naturally put pressure on themselves always
15:20but if they could get a good result this weekend
15:22if they get a bad result
15:23it's not going to be much different to any other race
15:26but if they get a good result
15:27that's when it's going to be incredible
15:29She didn't look as delighted
15:30as he was to have their honeymoon here
15:32did she?
15:33I've married into this for life
15:35He might have sold it as a lovely week in Italy
15:37and somehow he's managed to plan it
15:39around the Grand Prix
15:40and she's been totally unaware of it
15:41maybe we just got her at the wrong moment
15:43maybe it was her idea
15:44because as we know
15:45the female audience is on the up and up
15:47Maybe she was just nervous of the camera
15:49Maybe she was just nervous
15:50I hope so
15:51We all feel that
15:52Interestingly the dynamic with Lewis
15:55and the Tifosi
15:57is a fascinating one
15:58because he's long been a rival of Ferrari
16:00battling the likes of Massa, Vettel
16:03and more recently his own teammate
16:05Charles Leclerc
16:06and now he's their great hope
16:08How do you make that shift as a fan
16:10to supporting someone that you've long
16:12you know
16:13booed?
16:14I'm sure the fans quite love it
16:15because they've booed him
16:16because he's been doing so well
16:17and then now suddenly he's on their side
16:19It's great
16:20It's like when you support a football team
16:21and then suddenly
16:22a great player comes to you
16:23It's a great thing
16:24and it's a great thing for the team
16:25So obviously
16:26I think high expectations
16:28going into this season
16:30We've had some great moments so far
16:31with Lewis and the team
16:32and I just really want to see
16:34especially this weekend
16:35and Monza later in the year
16:36I'd love to see Ferrari
16:38get back to where they belong
16:39Yeah I mean
16:40a strong Ferrari is great for the sport
16:42What about these updates then?
16:43Do you think they will make a significant difference?
16:45Yeah I think in FP1
16:47it was a bit of an unclear picture
16:49I think on the lap times in FP1
16:51it didn't look great
16:52When I started to look a little bit more at the data
16:54they actually looked pretty strong
16:55in the beginning half of the lap
16:56and maybe a bit weaker in the final half of the lap
16:58It's a bit more work to go through
17:00what happened in FP2 there
17:01but if they can understand it
17:04and they'll spend a lot of time tonight doing that
17:06they'll spend time in the simulator
17:07trying to understand what their plan is for tomorrow
17:10then they could have a good weekend here
17:12and as we know here
17:14we've had two red flags today
17:16as Jamie pointed out earlier
17:17anything can happen in qualifying
17:19This is going to be a hectic Q1 and Q2 in particular
17:23so getting a lap done at the right time
17:26getting the right traffic
17:27you know it's going to be so so vital
17:29it's going to be really on the edge
17:30of what happens tomorrow I think
17:32that could bring it all together
17:34so they just need to bring
17:35all of the pieces of their weekend together
17:37and they've learned a lot so far this year
17:38so hopefully they can do it
17:40Calm heads on the pit wall
17:41Exactly calm heads
17:42Now this week the big news coming into the weekend
17:47was wholesale changes at Alpine
17:49It has been somewhat chaotic
17:51because not only has there been a team principal
17:55stepping down from his role
17:56citing personal reasons and with immediate effect
17:59but also we're only at race 7
18:01and we've had a driver swap
18:03with Jack Dewan being replaced by Franco Colopinto
18:07Franco has been promised 5 races
18:09like a probation period if you will
18:11to prove himself
18:13Let's hear from what the drivers have had to say
18:17about this mid-season change
18:19I mean it's a tough situation all round I think
18:24obviously it was a short time in F1 for Jack
18:28obviously Franco's coming in with these 5 races
18:33which is also not easy circumstances
18:36to come back into F1
18:38so yeah I think it's a tough situation
18:42I think for Jack he can be proud of what he's achieved
18:46he still became an F1 driver
18:49and no one can take that away from him
18:51As a rookie in a team
18:53it's not like he has a rocket ship as well
18:55it's really tough in the midfield
18:58to be competitive
19:00and he didn't have enough time to prove much
19:04I spoke to Jack
19:06obviously for him it's very tough
19:08I think he showed enough to stay in F1 for sure
19:12he showed enough to be in F1
19:14but also it's hard
19:16how can you be expected in 5 races
19:18to show everything you have as well in your rookie season
19:21Unfortunately not really any surprise
19:25from some of the decisions I've been taking
19:28recently from the team
19:30but I don't have much to say
19:33obviously sad for Jack
19:37I'm sure he will be back in F1 at some point
19:40he showed some really strong moments this year
19:44where he's qualified super well
19:46and he's been super quick in the car
19:48which was good to see
19:50on the other hand also Franco deserves to be in F1
19:53last year he showed some great things with the Williams car
19:56unfortunately there are not enough cars on the grid
20:01to fit all the talents that there is out there
20:06So what do you make of it all Jamie?
20:08These changes at Alpine?
20:10Which part?
20:12Let's start with the driver swap
20:14because it's in stark contrast to what they do at Mercedes
20:18which is protect the rookie
20:20nurture him, bring him along nice and slowly
20:23perhaps more akin to Red Bull
20:25that sort of slightly ruthless nature
20:27which we've come to expect perhaps in F1
20:29A little bit, I think your point is what we expect in F1
20:32is the case, it's an elite sport at the highest level
20:35and we need to see the drivers operating at the highest level
20:38I think what Mercedes have done
20:40they know they've fast tracked a driver into F1
20:42they know really Kimi's had a very quick route in
20:45and they've given him that time and they've done the best
20:47that they can to allow for that
20:49The way they put Jack in, they signed Jack last year
20:52when they didn't necessarily have an obvious choice
20:55for someone knocking on the door
20:57they signed Jack and as soon as Franco became on the market
21:00it was very clear that that's where their eyes had started already to look
21:04and that put a huge amount of pressure on Jack
21:06I think a lot of us knew it was inevitable
21:08that there was this weight on his shoulders
21:10I think he did a great job to be honest
21:12I think as a rookie and a genuine rookie
21:14that didn't get all the testing that a lot of the other rookies got
21:16I think he did an incredible job
21:18and as I said, because it wasn't such an outstanding job
21:21is it going to be a much better job than Franco's probably going to do now?
21:24Maybe not
21:25and with everything that Franco brings
21:27I can see why the team have put him in
21:29so it's very difficult, it's very hard on Jack
21:31but from Franco's point of view
21:33and he saw the drivers talk about Franco
21:35he's a great driver as well
21:36he's got an opportunity now to really step it up
21:38and prove what he can do
21:39And it's interesting because Hadjar said himself
21:41it's not a rocket ship
21:43he didn't really have the tools to prove himself
21:45and actually, okay, yes, he was outqualified
21:48by Pierre Gasly
21:49but in terms of race performance
21:52he actually did himself proud
21:54the trouble is he didn't convert into points, did he?
21:56Yeah, exactly, he didn't convert into points
21:58but the midfield team, it's very, very hard to score points
22:00you know, we've only got points to P10
22:02so if you're not higher than the fifth fastest team
22:04which at times they're not
22:05it's a real struggle
22:06it doesn't surprise me to be outqualified by Gasly
22:08Gasly's an excellent driver
22:10you know, we've seen that time and time again
22:12so the qualifying performance doesn't surprise me
22:15it's the race performance
22:16and that's why he's no longer here
22:17He certainly is an excellent driver
22:19he did very well in FP2
22:21bring it in third
22:23let's hear from him now, shall we?
22:27Crikey, Pierre, you look quick out there today
22:29I know Alpine normally go well here
22:31but that was insane pace
22:33just talk me through how happy you are
22:34with what you delivered today
22:35Yeah, it's been a very, very good Friday
22:38from the first lap
22:40I could tell the car was in a much better place than in Miami
22:44and I'm glad we managed to answer some of the question mark
22:47we had after the last race
22:49so very pleased
22:51with the feeling in the car
22:53the car reacts the way I want
22:54I'm really able to be at the limit
22:58and push it to the maximum
23:00so it's a nice feeling
23:02the performance is there
23:03obviously we know from Friday to Saturday
23:05others usually keep a bit more in their pocket
23:08but I think it's quite fair to say
23:10it's probably been the best Friday so far this year
23:12and FP1 was not the smoothest session for you
23:16unfortunately in Animal
23:17was it a hair across the track?
23:19just talk me through what happened there
23:20Yeah, very sadly
23:24I couldn't tell if it was a small cat or a big rabbit
23:30and turned out that it was a big rabbit
23:32just jumping across the track
23:36I could not avoid it
23:38so I had quite a big impact on the front wing
23:41which unfortunately that was it for the rabbit
23:46and also broke the front wing
23:48was not ideal
23:49but not the end of the session we wanted
23:54Was there a lot of damage done?
23:56and great work by the team to rebuild for FP2
23:58and for you to still feel comfortable with the car?
24:00I must say it's quite unfortunate
24:02because obviously we always try to look after our parts
24:06and do the best job we can
24:08so when such things happen
24:10it's not great
24:12but yeah some quite a bit of damage on the front wing
24:15and the floor
24:16some of the guys managed to do a great work and repair
24:20but yeah I think we would have all done without it
24:25Well his performance today certainly comes as a pleasant surprise
24:28given the chaos behind the scenes
24:30it's good to see a smile on his face
24:32rest in peace to the poor little rabbit
24:34don't laugh I mean it, it's horrible
24:36I hate it when I see a little animal like that
24:39I know, horrible
24:41but in terms of Pierre
24:43this is a real boost for him isn't it?
24:45It should be
24:46and I think that's where the drivers do a great job
24:48at kind of putting aside the chaos
24:50everything they're asked in the media
24:52in the week and the build up
24:53I mean to be honest
24:54Pierre said it doesn't change that much
24:56which is slightly concerning
24:57because it should change a lot
24:58but he's saying you know
25:00it doesn't change much operationally
25:02the team will run as normal
25:03and from his point of view
25:04he's got a new teammate this weekend
25:06another opportunity to prove himself
25:08against whoever he's up against
25:09over the last few races that he's had
25:11so yeah he's flying
25:12and hopefully he can carry it into tomorrow
25:14To Jamie's point
25:15there is such a high turnover at Alpine
25:18that does reflect something perhaps about the culture
25:21there are bigger questions to be answered
25:23Well like lots of people will ask
25:24any of us in our everyday life
25:25what's your five-year plan?
25:27these teams should have a five-year plan
25:29where are they going to go?
25:30how are they developing?
25:31what upgrades are they bringing?
25:32and if you can't have sustained management
25:35for that period of time
25:37if you're continuously changing
25:39the person at the helm
25:40that's making these big decisions
25:42about which direction the team's going
25:44which drivers you're signing
25:45which engine you're running with
25:46all of these key decisions
25:48if the person making that decision
25:50is changing year on year almost
25:52then how do you get any consistency?
25:54how do you grow the team?
25:57to just put it in context
25:59hardly anyone in F1
26:01apart from a driver
26:02leaves with immediate effect
26:04most people have
26:05I had a six-month probation period
26:07I wasn't going to another team
26:08so lots and lots of people
26:10have six months, nine months
26:12we hear of Adrian Newey on Gardiner
26:14leave for a significant amount of time
26:16so someone with that sort of
26:17inside team information
26:19to leave with immediate effect
26:21is very unusual in this sport
26:23and I think the more worrying thing is
26:25who is driving the company?
26:27who's making those big decisions
26:29about where the future development is going
26:32and like Jamie says
26:33for someone to leave and say
26:34it doesn't really affect us
26:35that's even more worrying
26:37yeah, I mean, it certainly affects
26:39everyone to varying degrees
26:41it's significantly
26:42it is Mental Health Awareness Week
26:43which I believe it should be
26:44every week anyway
26:45and we are dealing with human beings here
26:47and the impact on those human beings
26:49will vary, but it will be significant
26:51and we ask the drivers
26:53up and down the paddock
26:54how can they manage
26:55their mental well-being?
26:57I think if you ask
26:59a driver or an athlete
27:01you know, how much of performing
27:03is split between your talent
27:06and your mental side
27:08they would probably say
27:10in the region of 50-50
27:11or 60-40 maybe
27:13yet we spend our lives training
27:15our bodies physically
27:17you know, the simulator as well
27:19but no attention on mental training
27:21and that's something that I've been
27:22trying to work on myself
27:23the extra difficulty
27:25of being in Formula 1
27:27you know, it's a challenge
27:29and it's something that I've been
27:30trying to work on
27:31and yeah, with not seeing
27:33any major results
27:35because I'm still very early
27:37into kind of
27:39looking after myself
27:41in that regard
27:42but I think it's a really important aspect
27:44and something that needs
27:45to really be focused on
27:46especially at the top level
27:47of any sport
27:48yeah, it's massively important
27:49I think it's
27:51you know, I think a lot of people
27:52only see the tip of the iceberg
27:54when it comes to F1
27:55you know, a lot of people
27:56turn the TV on
27:57on a Saturday or Sunday
27:58and you just see the racing
27:59and you think you go back home
28:01and put your feet up
28:02until the next Grand Prix
28:03but with all the sponsor events
28:04days on the simulator
28:05debriefing with the team
28:07and then of course for him
28:08you know, home race this weekend
28:10a lot of home support
28:11family, classmates here
28:14which is like awesome
28:16awesome to see
28:17you know, just take a bit of energy
28:18out of you
28:19but it also gives you
28:21so much energy
28:22so like for me personally
28:23on a Monday after Silverstone
28:25I'm destroyed
28:26but during the weekend
28:27I've got so much energy
28:31well, everyone has a bespoke approach
28:33to their mental health
28:34it's about being self-aware
28:35isn't it?
28:36and recognising what works for you
28:38certainly what works for Max Verstappen
28:40it seems
28:41is to race a little bit more
28:43and underlying his passion
28:44for racing
28:45and perhaps his aspirations
28:46for endurance racing
28:48he went to Nordschleife
28:49and now just tell me
28:50how tough a task that is to do
28:54he drove the GT3 Ferrari
28:58and he casually set a new lap record
29:01it's unbelievable honestly
29:03I've raced that Nürburgring 24-hour race
29:05on a couple of occasions
29:06that track is insane
29:08it's one thing to drive it
29:09and just to drive around it
29:10but to supposedly set a lap record
29:12is insane
29:13and I mean he spends a huge amount of time
29:15he dedicates so much of his time
29:16on the simulator
29:17everything to this sport
29:18but just to jump in a car like that
29:19and drive it that quickly
29:20is I think really showing
29:22how he is the class of the field
29:24in terms of his talent
29:25and is it about his relationship
29:26with Red Bull
29:27that they understand that
29:28and they give him the freedom
29:29to do that
29:30will that keep him happy?
29:31will that keep him at the team?
29:32let's hope so
29:33and I think it is
29:34for someone of Max's ability
29:36he's obviously this desire
29:37to try it
29:38to give it a go
29:39like Jamie says
29:40these are incredible tracks
29:41that we don't go to in F1
29:42so to experience it
29:43to do it
29:44and I was actually wondering earlier
29:46you know
29:47some people can look at it
29:48and say
29:49that's a distraction from his F1
29:50he shouldn't be doing that
29:51he should be fully focused
29:52on his F1
29:53but he's in a year
29:54that's a challenge
29:55and I was actually thinking
29:56in a bit of a chat
29:57with Jamie about it earlier
29:58is the potential
30:00that driving in a car
30:01those cars
30:02they have to set up
30:03for more than one driver
30:04so generally
30:05in like a GT 24 hour race
30:07for example
30:08you've got 3 to 4 drivers in it
30:09so you have to set it up
30:10for more than one driver
30:11so he has to compromise
30:13a little bit in his setup
30:14and we talk so much
30:15about Red Bull
30:16and the direction
30:17he's driven them in
30:18having this very nervous car
30:19that other people can't drive
30:22is there actually something
30:24from that experience
30:25that might help Max grow
30:27as a driver
30:28because there will be
30:29some compromises to be made
30:31because if they design
30:32the car for him
30:33the other 3 drivers
30:34that are driving
30:35the other 3 thirds
30:36of the 3 quarters
30:37of the 24 hours
30:38won't be able to perform
30:39and the result
30:40won't be good enough
30:41so it might be really good for him
30:42yeah
30:43I mean I think
30:44circling it back
30:45to the mental health
30:46side of things
30:47it's about doing
30:48the right thing for you
30:49and only you know
30:50what that is
30:51and actually keeping
30:52the noise of social media
30:53which quite frankly
30:54is like the wild west
30:55well away from you
30:56at a racetrack
30:57or indeed your private life
30:58absolutely
30:59I think you've nailed it
31:00I think there's so much
31:01I don't know
31:02scrutiny on how people are
31:03if it's right
31:04or if it's wrong
31:05every athlete
31:06every person is different
31:07and it is important
31:08to be yourself
31:09and then you combine that
31:10with social media
31:11telling you what you should
31:12or shouldn't be
31:13and critiquing everything
31:14you do
31:15and it's really difficult
31:16and I look at these drivers now
31:17and it's crazy
31:18they're under so much pressure
31:19they're being paid
31:20a huge amount of money
31:21which okay
31:22sounds fantastic
31:23but it comes with
31:24a lot of pressure
31:25they've then got
31:26all the scrutiny
31:27and weight of everything
31:28on top of them
31:29and they've got to perform
31:30every single session
31:31every single day
31:32and I don't think people
31:33always realize
31:34how tough that is
31:35and to me
31:36I think from a mental health
31:37point of view
31:38it's something we don't speak
31:39nearly enough about
31:40and when we do
31:41sometimes it's kind of
31:42it's something
31:43that shouldn't
31:44just be a week
31:45it should be spoken about
31:46a lot more
31:47and brought more attention to
31:48well given how much
31:49emphasis we put on
31:50physical performance
31:51for these drivers
31:52mental health
31:53really does matter too
31:54now you will notice
31:55around us
31:56that all the hospitality
31:57units have come back
31:58for Europe
31:59which is great
32:00and Haas
32:01have got a brand
32:02spanking new one

34:59he's busy
35:01and we have another
35:02secret room in here
35:04a lounging area
35:06and that
35:07is
35:09our motorhome
35:11with lots of
35:12oranges and limes
35:13and lemons too
35:15that's pretty much all
35:16thank you for joining me
35:20I'm sure he enjoys
35:21champagne when it's being
35:22sprayed on him
35:23on the top step of the podium
35:24thank you Oli
35:25that was very
35:26insightful
35:27like Lloyd Grossman
35:28on Through the Keyhole
35:29you're way too young
35:30to even know what I'm
35:31talking about
35:32not got you on that
35:33it is good to be back
35:34in Europe though
35:35it does feel like
35:36home from home
35:37it does actually
35:38logistically
35:39make it so much easier
35:40for the drivers to come
35:41to races like this
35:42yeah I think things
35:43like that
35:44like his driver room
35:45doesn't change week on
35:46week
35:47it's a very
35:48familiar environment
35:49same for the team
35:50your office is the same
35:51week on week for the
35:52engineers
35:53for the catering staff
35:54you're back to the
35:55proper kitchens
35:56that they're used to
35:57everything just
35:58becomes much
35:59more routine
36:00even simple things
36:01like the time of day
36:02for the Europeans
36:03rather than the
36:04night races we've had
36:05so yeah
36:06it does become
36:07just like
36:08you feel like you're
36:09back in it
36:10I felt even a little
36:11bit like that
36:12when we got on our
36:13Wednesday flight
36:14it was full of F1 again
36:15it felt like
36:16just back to what
36:17we're used to
36:18actually got a good
36:19idea for supper
36:20for later
36:21tonight
