01:55just having that great juxtaposition of a classic American song
02:00with an Arab family fleeing war in Kuwait
02:03that was the first scene I wrote was in like December of 2014
02:08so it's something that I prepped for and I was obsessed with
02:13and I wanted to make sure that I was ready from when the moment came
02:18and thankfully after I did the first special The Vagabond
02:21which is just fully expressing where I came from
02:28and explaining where I came from and what I'm about
02:30what I had to go through
02:31and it was a great starting point to go into the series of Mo
02:37That's where I actually first saw you, The Vagabond
02:40and the reason I ask about the transition from a stand-up comedian
02:44to a show creator
02:46because not every stand-up comedian is in Hollywood
02:50not every stand-up comedian is working as an actor
02:52making movies and stuff like this
02:54but you managed to do this
02:55but not only as an actor
02:57you even wrote your stuff
02:58your executive produced this
03:00and you starred this
03:01and I wanted to know
03:03I directed
03:03Yeah, yeah, yeah
03:04a few episodes
03:05No, but Mo, you're a storyteller regardless
03:09no matter what you do
03:10and it's your story anyway
03:12no one knows better than you
03:13the question here is like
03:15how much of your story is fiction
03:19and how much of it is real
03:20because for me it's kind of like
03:22documentary trying to be a show
03:26Sure, sure
03:26No, you know, I can't exactly tell you 50-50
03:30or this and that
03:31I can definitely say that
03:32especially season two
03:35but I would say like a nice combo of season one
03:37like I never had a drug addiction from season one
03:39like I never had like a codeine addiction
03:41or anything like that
03:42I just thought that it added a layer of sophistication
03:45to the character
03:45and allowed me to tap into a performance
03:47that I've, you know, challenged myself
03:49and experienced something
03:51and try to display that
03:52and, you know, challenge myself as an actor
03:56and that was why I chose to go that route
03:58and it's part of the southern culture
04:00and, you know, as far as coding is concerned or lean
04:06but, yeah, there's certain things
04:08that are just copy-paste
04:09that are exactly that happened in my life
04:12that no one else could write but the divine
04:15you know, like
04:16you just can't rewrite something that's perfect
04:19so, for instance
04:20I'll just give you an example
04:21in episode seven of season one
04:23when the judge knew my father
04:26before he passed away
04:27and he was curious
04:28where he was
04:29that's a real story
04:29that's exactly what happened
04:31I know, man
04:32that's exactly
04:33and the scene when your dad
04:34where, the video
04:36and when I saw the actual video
04:37I cried
04:38Yeah, I get emotional
04:40thinking about it right now
04:41so that's 100% accurate
04:42This one is like
04:43The call to prayer
04:44in episode eight
04:45in season two
04:46is 100% what I experienced
04:49where I went to the mosque
04:50in my family's village
04:51for the first time
04:52Oh, wow
04:52and, you know
04:54after I just did the call to prayer
04:56after being forced
04:57to do the call to prayer
04:57because I was so nervous
04:59this man comes in
05:01and he's so upset about it
05:02who did it
05:03who did the call to prayer
05:04and I'm so angry
05:05and then he realized
05:06who I was
05:07and who my father was
05:08and he explained to me
05:09it was my dad
05:09who installed
05:10the microphone system
05:12and the entire electronics
05:13in the
05:14Wow
05:14Yeah, in the mosque
05:16it was
05:17I just
05:18it shattered me inside
05:19and the thing is
05:21that I
05:21I wanted
05:22like I did in episode eight
05:24I wanted to capture
05:24the moment
05:25of what I felt like
05:26after I did the call to prayer
05:27and after I found out
05:28that my father installed it
05:30where I hid from my cousin
05:32and I just started weeping
05:34just
05:35I was happy
05:35and also very sad
05:39at the same time
05:40and just
05:41just like
05:42kind of
05:43having gratitude
05:44to the divine
05:45of like
05:46getting to experience
05:47such a thing
05:48and
05:49additionally
05:50the video camera itself
05:52it was after 30 years
05:54you know
05:55of thinking
05:56this video camera
05:57is lost
05:57and I had the
05:58two days before
05:59it was actually my aunt
06:00in real life
06:01not my uncle
06:02that
06:03that had the video camera
06:05she's the one
06:06who brought it to me
06:07and I questioned
06:07two days prior
06:08like man
06:09I wonder what happened
06:10to this video camera
06:11and two days later
06:12my aunt brings it to me
06:14with a stack of VHS tapes
06:16and that night
06:18so this is an amazing part
06:19of the story actually
06:20so that night
06:21I was
06:21I was you know
06:22I was curious if it worked
06:24so I plugged it in
06:25and I was watching
06:26all the
06:27all the footage
06:28through the viewfinder
06:29and the video camera
06:30and the man
06:32that was filming me
06:34was Ali Khalifa
06:35who plays my cousin
06:37in the show
06:38once
06:41I
06:43you know
06:43I've totally forgot
06:44that
06:45Adi's the one
06:45who filmed me
06:46so when I was
06:47recreating the scene
06:48of me discovering
06:50the footage
06:50in episode 8
06:51Adi looked at me
06:52and goes
06:53remember
06:53I started filming you
06:56when you were
06:56discovering the footage
06:58and I was like
06:59oh my god
07:00you did
07:00and I looked it up
07:02right away
07:02I found the footage
07:03of my phone
07:04in the cloud
07:06and I sent it
07:07to my editor
07:08and I said
07:08listen
07:09you know
07:10look through this footage
07:11please put it
07:12at the end of the credits
07:13when you do your cut
07:14because the editor
07:15will do her cut
07:15and then I go in
07:17and do my director's cut
07:18and it was extraordinary
07:20when I saw it
07:21and Lauren
07:21who edited episode 8
07:23did such an extraordinary job
07:25that the ending itself
07:27that last
07:27you know
07:28minute
07:29of the flashes
07:30of everything
07:31and then
07:32going into the doc footage
07:33I didn't touch
07:34she did such an immaculate job
07:36with that
07:37that I was weeping
07:38I was with my wife
07:39we were watching it together
07:40and I remember seeing
07:41that footage come on
07:42and I
07:43yeah I get emotional
07:44thinking about it
07:45it's impossible
07:46I wasn't there
07:46it's not my dad
07:47I wasn't there
07:48but I cried so much
07:50after that scene
07:51and I seen the real footage
07:52yeah
07:53I feel like
07:54if you don't cry
07:55at the end of it
07:56or feel something significant
07:57where you at least
07:58get watered your eye
07:58you're like dead inside
07:59that's how I feel
08:00I'm like how do you feel nothing
08:02how
08:03you should get some therapy
08:04that's what I think
08:05yeah
08:06no it was
08:07really extraordinary
08:08and so special
08:09to be able to pull something off
08:10like this
08:10I think this is my favorite thing
08:11of the two seasons
08:12and you
08:13and you selling falafel in Mexico
08:15yeah
08:15that's why
08:17yeah thank you
08:18no I love them
08:19I love how the show touches
08:21on you being American
08:24being Arab
08:25and also in the same time
08:27being Texan
08:28yes
08:28which is a different identity
08:30within the identity
08:31my whole thing
08:32is trying to be timeless
08:33timely and timeless
08:34so that you can watch forever
08:35and you can enjoy
08:37and feel something
08:38and laugh and cry with me
08:39like that's the intent
08:41to find the comedy
08:42in such a tragedy
08:44and turn it from
08:46situations like this
08:48that happen in your life
08:49for people
08:49to be entertained
08:50and laughed at
08:51yeah
08:51and you still excel
08:53at doing it very well
08:54it's not easy
08:55it was really important
08:56to me though
08:57like you know
08:58to first of all
08:59show generational displacement
09:00it's not something
09:01that it just like
09:02they left from the West Bank
09:04and arrived in Houston
09:04no
09:05like when I
09:05fled the Gulf War
09:07in Kuwait
09:07I was nine years old
09:08and I thought everything
09:09was fine
09:09I didn't know
09:10even I was stateless
09:11right
09:11so when the Gulf War
09:13happened
09:14and all the realities
09:15came flooding
09:16to what my
09:17situation actually is
09:19it you know
09:20it put me in a different
09:21mind frame
09:22right
09:22so we ended up
09:23in Houston Texas
09:24and just
09:25immediately I knew
09:26I was a fish
09:27out of water
09:28and even when
09:29I started doing
09:30stand-up early on
09:31in my career
09:31you would get
09:32these questions
09:33quite often
09:34on the road
09:34like you know
09:35look Arab
09:35are you sure
09:36you're Arab
09:36like these
09:37common questions
09:38so that was really
09:39you know
09:40a big thing
09:41early on in my career
09:42and I really thought
09:43that it's
09:44it's a huge
09:46hole that's missing
09:47in American culture
09:48to show
09:49this different side
09:50and it's not just
09:51the Palestinian perspective
09:52but also the
09:53you know
09:54those who are displaced
09:55those that had to
09:55flee their countries
09:56for a better life
09:57what kind of challenges
09:59did you face
10:00bringing most
10:01or it's a life
10:02just the stress
10:04of everything
10:05that's going on
10:05in the world
10:06and making sure
10:06that
10:07that I execute
10:08something
10:09that people
10:09will be proud of
10:10and I felt like
10:12you know
10:12we humanized something
10:13in a time
10:14where it was almost
10:15felt dangerous
10:16to talk about
10:16so to be able
10:18to pull something
10:19like that off
10:20with everything
10:21that's going on
10:22where people can
10:23have some empathy
10:24and some understanding
10:25not just one time
10:26but twice
10:28yes
10:28but really
10:29really
10:30a whole nother level
10:31in season 2
10:32because of where
10:32everything is going on
10:33and the fact
10:34that the family
10:34did get to go back
10:36to the West Bank
10:37get to go back
10:38to Palestine
10:38like you know
10:40we had to go
10:40we have to go there
10:42and we have to show
10:42what it was like
10:44to be there
10:45and for me
10:46it was just a
10:47you know
10:48it was my experience
10:49and it was through
10:50my experience
10:51that I channeled
10:51when I took my mom
10:53and my brother
10:53there in 2016
10:54and my mom
10:55was able to
10:56see her sisters
10:57for the first time
10:58in 37 years
10:59and see her
11:00be with her
11:01grandparents
11:01at her parents
11:03house
11:03my grandparents
11:04house
11:04and seeing how
11:05emotional that is
11:06and finding me
11:08finding my
11:08grandfather's passport
11:09that's all real
11:10you know
11:10that whole experience
11:12of episode 8
11:14is essentially
11:15a copy paste
11:16of what
11:16my real life
11:18is
11:18so
11:18yeah
11:20it just
11:20you know
11:21it was a beautiful
11:22beautiful thing
11:23and I'm so proud
11:23of it
11:24so incredibly proud
11:25of it
11:25three quick questions
11:26yes
11:26three quick questions
11:27Matt Reif
11:28Matt Reif
11:29yeah
11:29how was it
11:30in there
11:31he was great
11:32he was so lovely
11:32yeah he was so lovely
11:34he really was excited
11:35to be part of the show
11:35he wanted to do it
11:37and you know
11:37he filmed his part
11:38in Malta
11:39it was so nice
11:39of him to
11:40to come all the way
11:42out for that one
11:42day to shoot that
11:43so he was
11:43he was great
11:44he was great
11:45Ralph Barbosa
11:45was also great
11:46just wonderful
11:48your cast is all
11:48stellar for me
11:49everybody
11:49Shereen
11:50you know Farah
11:51everybody
11:52we love them
11:53the acting
11:54and the show itself
11:54without the identity
11:56without the code
11:57without every
11:57the show itself
11:59is entertaining
12:00I have a lot of people
12:01in an Arab
12:02talking
12:02have you seen more
12:03of course I have
12:04I've seen more himself
12:06that's what he don't know
12:07I have him
12:07he's my boy
12:08yeah he's my boy
12:09we follow each other
12:10on Instagram
12:10so the second question
12:14you and Rami Youssef
12:16one of like
12:17the best
12:18Arab example
12:19for me in America
12:20especially
12:20in the last 20 years
12:21it's really
12:22you know
12:22we really have to
12:24pay homage
12:25to all those
12:25that came before us
12:26and just because
12:28you haven't seen them
12:29particularly
12:30in American television
12:31doesn't mean
12:32we don't
12:33you know
12:33acknowledge
12:34like
12:34who I've been
12:36inspired by as well
12:37it's not just
12:38American artists
12:39that have influenced me
12:41or my personal family
12:42members
12:43or my father
12:43or my mother
12:44like the first play
12:45I ever saw
12:46in my entire life
12:47was in 1987
12:47my father was a little boy
12:49he took us to a play
12:50in Cairo
12:51we saw
12:52Wadzey the Shergal
12:53Adel Imam
12:54who was an iconic
12:56you know
12:57Egyptian actor
12:59he's like
13:00comedy monster
13:02legend
13:02complete icon
13:03and I got to see that
13:04when I was
13:05you know
13:06a little boy
13:07I was like 6
13:07or 5, 6 years old
13:09and I knew
13:09what I was seeing
13:10was special
13:11like I absolutely knew
13:12that this was
13:14extraordinary
13:15although that I didn't
13:16follow everything
13:17but the physicality
13:18and the timing
13:19I understood very well
13:20so we have to
13:22like acknowledge
13:23those that are
13:23really really
13:24you know
13:25paved the way for us
13:26before we even
13:26for me
13:27migrated to the states
13:29and found
13:30stand up
13:30as an art form
13:31which is an
13:32indigenous art form
13:33in America
13:33so when I found
13:35stand up
13:35I fell in love
13:36immediately
13:36as a 9 year old kid
13:37and I knew
13:38that's what I was
13:38going to do
13:39but also remember
13:40those that
13:41that truly
13:42inspired us
13:43inspired our parents
13:44but you are
13:45inspiring other people
13:47yes
13:48like you're
13:48inspiring the young
13:49generation
13:50no don't get me wrong
13:50I know that I'm
13:51inspiring people
13:51and it's beautiful
13:52and I get those
13:53interactions on a
13:53regular basis
13:54and on my comedy
13:56tours and understanding
13:56that I did something
13:57that historical
13:58in nature
13:59and that's a
14:00that's a
14:00you know
14:01a massive blessing
14:02and I take that
14:03very very seriously
14:04and it's an enormous
14:05responsibility
14:06in addition to that
14:08I'm not negating it
14:09and just in addition
14:10I always think
14:11it's so important
14:12to like truly
14:14truly show some
14:15appreciation
14:16because that inspired
14:17me in the show
14:18like in season one
14:20when I had
14:21you know
14:21you know
14:23which is
14:26you know
14:27from the show
14:28and you know
14:31I remember seeing
14:32my parents watch
14:33that show
14:35and that scene
14:35in particular
14:36and it's
14:36one of two times
14:37that I've ever seen
14:38my dad actually cry
14:39and I knew in that
14:41moment
14:41that was a significant
14:42thing
14:42like
14:43I knew it
14:44and I knew how
14:45so much depth
14:47that
14:47that
14:48that song had
14:49and the meaning
14:50that it had
14:51behind it
14:51not only did I use
14:53the song in season one
14:54but I also do a callback
14:56to it in season two
14:57when my mom
14:57and my sister
14:58on the dock
14:59in episode seven
15:00when my sister says
15:01you know
15:02the world
15:03is
15:04is
15:05not enough
15:06for you
15:07you're worth
15:07the world
15:08you're not even
15:08the world is not
15:09enough for you
15:09only God
15:10is enough for you
15:11and that's from
15:12the lyrics
15:12of that song
15:14so
15:14of Yamo
15:15so
15:15you know
15:16it was again
15:17tipping of the hat
15:18and I think it's
15:18super important
15:19to acknowledge
15:20the
15:21the inspirations
15:22that we had
15:22both
