00:07It stood near her hometown of Severnika.
00:10There appears to be no clue as to who took it or why.
00:13The BBC's Tim Allman reports.
00:17A field in eastern Slovenia that is now a potential crime scene and perhaps the venue of an international incident.
00:25A tree stump and two bronze feet. All that's left of the statue of Melania Trump that had stood here for five years.
00:34Its disappearance a mystery and for some a profound disappointment.
00:39We were a bit sad but then we thought like we will anyway come and see it because it was already planned.
00:46So yeah, now unfortunately it's gone. But we can still see the feet, right?
00:55This was the moment the statue was unveiled.
00:58A bronze replacement for a previous wooden version that had been set fire to.
01:02It's probably fair to say the artist was not aiming for photorealism.
01:09It was a tribute to Melania Trump who was born in the nearby town of Sevnica
01:14before leaving to make her name as an international model.
01:18Despite her being a local girl, some felt the bronze work of art left a bitter taste.
01:23I think no one was really proud of this statue, said this woman.
01:31So I think it's okay, it was removed.
01:35Detectives say they're working to track down those who are responsible.
01:38As one local put it, the statue was an icon.
01:41A symbol of their famous Sevnica girl.
